Reality TV gets 3 wishes -- New NBC program takes aim at Philadelphia
By RYAN KARP, T-R Staff Writer
Ever wish you had your own fairy godmother? NBC Television Network could be wearing those wings.
Network producers could be granting wishes to individuals from New Philadelphia, Dover and surrounding areas or even an entire community for a new primetime TV show called “Three Wishes.”
Depending on the “wishes” that are received from the area, NBC could conduct casting calls and film the show featuring area residents who are deserving of having their wishes granted.
“We’re looking for wishes in New Philadelphia,” said Bryan Stinson, the show’s supervising casting producer. “The concept of the show is that we find these great small towns across America and we come into the town and grant three wishes.”
Stinson added the show’s filming most likely would be headquartered in New Philadelphia, but the wishes could be granted to anyone in Tuscarawas County.
“If we find two or three great stories, we’ll come there and hold an open casting call,” said Stinson. “We hope to grant a number of smaller wishes along the way as well.”
The producers are looking to grant wishes for deserving people – those who always help others but never think of themselves. Three wishes could be granted to three different people or two people with a third wish granted to an entire town.
Stinson offered these examples of the types of wishes or deserving people they hope to find:
– Struggling inventors.
– Reliving an old glory.
– Reuniting friends, family members or long lost loves.
– Are you haunted by something in your past? (like a missed field goal or a free throw?)
– Would you like to say “I’m sorry?” or need help forgiving?
– Good Samaritans.
– Saving a factory from closing.
– Helping someone overcome a fear or a phobia.
– Child who would love to rescue animals in danger.
– Soldier’s story.
– Medical miracles.
Individuals may nominate wishes for someone else.
“We’re looking for those fun and uplifting stories as well,” said Stinson. “The wishes (will be chosen) based on quality. We want very creative and visual wishes.”
The show, which is hosted by five-time Grammy-winning recording artist Amy Grant, has been picked up by NBC for 10 episodes. If New Philadelphia is chosen, shooting would occur in late August and take seven to 10 days. The premiere of the show is Sept. 23.

I missed the premiere of the show but here's a recap from the official website.
Week One
Upon arriving in this idyllic California town, the Three Wishes team started spreading the word and setting up the Wish Tent.
Soon, the entire town had lined up to share their wishes. The first wish involved a young young girl named Abby who had been in a terrible accident.
Amy went to visit Abby’s family and learned more about Abby’s injuries. Once a beautiful young athlete, Abby was now disfigured and had to wear a helmet to protect part of her exposed skull from futher injury.
Abby was more concerned about her parents than herself. She wanted to play sports like softball and gymnastics again. She needed an operation to help her skull completely heal.
Abby’s parents had stopped even opening the medical bills because there was just no way to pay them. The Three Wishes team was determined to help in whatever way they could.
Meanwhile, back at the wish tent, Eric had found a good candidate for another wish. Bobby’s father had died when he was young, but his stepdad, Tim ,has really been a great comfort for him and his mother. Bobby wanted to do something extra special to show Tim how much he was appreciated and loved.
Carter listened while the local cheer squad asked if they could get a new football field, in honor of their ailing coach.
While Abby met with doctors about the operation, the wish team worked on a secret surprise for her at home: a new backyard fitness enter/playhouse so that Abby could get back to being a strong, athletic girl.
Eric surprised Bobby’s stepfather Tim, a local sheriff, with a new Ford F-350! But it was only part of the wishes to come. The family also got personalized SF jerseys and tickets to a Giants’ baseball game…which was just a ploy to get them out of town. Bobby’s real wish was that Tim could adopt him and that was still in motion.
Carter had his own challenges with finding turf for the local football field. He had 48 hours to fly to Canada and meet with the turf company’s CEO. Of course, Carter’s charm – and the good cause – paid off as the company donated the turf!
Back at Abby’s house, her friends and teammates showed up to help with the project. They personalized the playhouse with an art project. Meanwhile, Bobby’s stepdad Tim was throwing the first pitch at the Giants’ game!
Abby soon arrived home to see her totally cool playhouse, complete with indoor lap pool and a snowboarding video game!
That night, the town of Sonora gathered at their muddy, crummy football field to await Carter’s arrival. Carter’s helicopter dramatically landed on the field and he soon emerged to share his good news. At his signal, athletic teams and cheerleaders charged onto the field, along with the marching band. Following them was a giant earthmover that tore up the soggy turf to make way for the new stuff.
The final Saturday in town, Amy went around tying up some wishe lose ends. A local waitress got flowers donated for her wedding. A mother with seven adopted children got a special screening for her family at a local theater. The local theater received a new keyboard. And there was more good news to come…
Abby’s family received word that she was a candidate for her additional surgery! To raise funds for the procedure and additional medical bills, Three Wishes set up a town carnival. Amy even performed!
The carnival was the perfect place for Bobby and Tim to learn that the adoption process had been expedited. Both Bobby and Tim were very emotional as Bobby read a moving note about how much Tim means to him. Then, the Judge made it official: Tim became Bobby’s legal father! (And there wasn’t a dry eye at the carnival!)

I sort of watched this first episode. It didn't really hold my attention.

Re: Three Wishes I taped the first episode. I've yet to watch it, though.

Re: Three Wishes The ratings for Three Wishes haven't been all that great. I wouldn't be too surprised if NBC pulled the plug on this show before too long.
