The Finish Line, Episode 6
The Amazing Race: All Stars – The Finish Line, Episode 6 by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 04/01/2007 This week, Peggy Bunker talks with Teri & Ian about their horrible airport troubles, what they thought of the race and their fellow racers, and that infamous disposable underwear! Peggy looks cute today in a nice red dress. She reminds us that Teri & Ian were eliminated this week as she welcomes them to the show. Peggy asks how the experience was for them. Ian says it was exceptional and Teri says they were thrilled to be chosen for All-Stars. Peggy then asks if there was anything they would have done differently. Ian says, “Charter an airplane!” Teri says the airport issues just did them in. There wasn’t much they could do. Ian points out that there was a religious pilgrimage going on to Dar es Salaam at the time, so the planes were really full. It was really frustrating. Peggy agrees it looked so busy! Ian said there must have been 10,000 people in the airport the entire time. Peggy says all the teams had trouble, but they got stuck. Ian says they were near the front of the airport line, but the manager had a list for who got on, and Teri & Ian didn’t make it. With that, Peggy takes us to a clip of the awful airport struggles from this week’s episode. We see some of the teams get on standby upstairs, while the Guidos and Teri & Ian got on standby from waiting in the official airport line. Everyone worries and waits, but some get on better planes than others. Oh, and Eric & Danielle are pulled off of the plane. Snork. The end of the clip shows Teri shooting lasers out of her eyes at all who would defy her... Well, she looked pretty upset, anyway. After the clip, Teri notes how it must have been even more frustrating for Eric & Danielle to get on the plane and then get pulled back off. The whole thing was bad. Ian said it would have been hilarious if they had put Teri & Ian on in their place. Peggy then asks if staying at the airport all night in Maputo helped them at all. Ian says no. Everything was sold out. It didn’t help at all. Peggy says that the two seemed to get along well during the race – at least until Ian made them stay overnight at the Maputo airport. Teri says she wanted to go back and get some sleep, but Ian could have been right. Eileen from New York calls in and asks whether Teri & Ian and the Guidos were forced to stop racing because it was dark when they entered the puzzle and light at the Roadblock. Teri says no, that was just the passage of time. When they entered the puzzle building it was still dark, but it was dawn by the time they left. Peggy asks if they knew they would be out. Ian said they were pretty sure either they or the Guidos would be eliminated. Cindy from Texas calls and asks how long Teri & Ian were stuck at the airport before they got to Tanzania. It seemed like forever! Teri & Ian said it was forever. Teri goes on to say that they spent two nights in airports and a third night on the dhow on the way to Zanzibar. Peggy asks what that was like, staying in the airports. Teri says you get sick of it, but you never want to quit. But after three nights with no shower, toothbrush, etc., it gets to be a “bit much.” With that, Peggy says it’s a good time to bring up the infamous disposable underwear. Ian says that they’re really a blend of paper and cotton and are pretty comfortable. You just throw them away after you wear them. Ian says they’ve gotten a lot of e-mails about them. He plans on autographing a pair for Phil because he was so interested in them. Phil himself sends a video where he goes on and on about how Teri & Ian were the only couple ever to wear disposable underwear – but it didn’t help them despite their being such a feisty older team who did so well on their season. After that, Peggy asks if Teri & Ian would ever wear the disposable underwear again. They say only in adventure situations! Peggy says that Teri & Ian were one of the older teams – they’re in their 50s – and do they think it hurt them at all? Teri says no. Ian says he thinks it helped because teams underestimated them and they had a lot more travel experience than some. Teri agrees that teams underestimated them. Peggy asks what it was like to get the call to go on All-Stars. Ian says it was a thrill! Now Peggy asks if it was hard to step out of their lives and away from their three kids, again. Teri says it wasn’t a problem. Her sister watched the kids before, and she said she’d do it again. It was a blessing to step out of your normal life and have this opportunity few do. Peggy asks what their favorite place on All-Stars was. Ian thinks it was Chile with the rafting and fish. Peggy asks even if Teri got knocked off the boat and in the rapids. Teri says it was fun! The guide had her back in the boat so fast and all she can remember thinking is what would she do with the paddle – she needed it to row. Peggy asks Ian if he was worried about her. Ian says it happened fast, but he was worried. But she came out smiling. Peggy notes that Teri is “one tough chick.” Zoe from New York calls in and says she noticed that Teri sometimes calls Ian “EE-an” and other times “EYE-an.” She wants to know which it is! Teri says it depends who you ask. She says it’s “EYE-an.” Ian says it’s “EE-an.” I agree with Ian. Peggy asks Zoe what she thinks about the disposable underwear. Zoe thinks it’s gross, but practical. Israel calls in from down in South Carolina. He asks if Teri & Ian considered getting on the same flight as Charla & Mirna considering how well they did afterwards. Ian says they tried to “beg, borrow, and steal” their way onto that flight! Charla & Mirna just had better shtick than they did with the airport manager. Peggy says that Charla & Mirna have now come in first two legs in a row, and they’d never done that before. Teri says that Charla & Mirna cruised through the leg. Peggy says that it looked really close between the Guidos and Teri & Ian and it looked like their might be some animosity. Ian says they’re great guys. Teri & Ian finished a few minutes behind them. The Guidos got a bit luckier. Teri notes that there was no animosity between the teams. They got along great with the Guidos at the airport and on the dhow, but everyone understood that when they got out of the boat, the race was on again. They are two great guys. Peggy apologizes and says she didn’t mean to say animosity, she just meant it was close. With that, she takes us to a clip of the two lagging teams struggling to find the Pit Stop and keep from being Philiminated. Of course, the Guidos beat Teri & Ian and the couple of almost 26 years gets the bad news at the mat. Teri & Ian say very sweet comments about each other after the race. You can tell they really love each other and loved racing together. Peggy coos watching the tender words between the two. She says everyone loves seeing how much they care about each other. Ian is tearing up from watching the clip. Aw! Peggy asks what the secret to their relationship is. Teri says that you have to work at it and you get good at it, and with kids it’s better to stay together. Teri says it was sad watching the clip. They had never heard Phil tell them they were out; they never heard that on their first race. Ian says it really hit him watching Phil eliminate them. It’s obvious Ian was moved by watching the clip. Warren from California calls in now and asks, this being the second race, did it strengthen them and their ability to take on new challenges? Ian says that he’s taken on a lot of civic issues in their part of Florida. Teri says that there was an underwater slide on the first race she didn’t do and she’s always regretted that. She learned from that; she would never let anything else she wanted to do pass her by again – and she’s done that. Jarrod from New York calls in next and says that Teri & Ian ran a H-E-L-L of a race in Season 3 and in All-Stars! And they got to visit Zanzibar. Jarrod mentions Ian’s response to visiting Vietnam in their first race. Jarrod says he thinks The Amazing Race does a great job showing people other countries and he wants to know what it was like for Ian. Ian says it was fantastic. Going through customs was difficult, but once they were in, it was amazing. Peggy points out that Ian is a Vietnam vet and that his eldest son is a veteran of the Iraq war and that he’s probably going back again in October. Ian says it’s tough, and that no matter what people think of the war, they should support the troops. Now Tammy from Connecticut calls and says she really enjoyed Teri & Ian on the race. It turns out this Tammy is Tammy of the Gaghan family from Season 8! She says Carissa was screaming for Teri & Ian when they got eliminated, saying how she wished they could keep racing. Teri & Ian thank her – and then her phone call gets cut off. Boy, they don’t have any respect for the folks from the family edition, do they? Peggy runs a clip of Teri & Ian getting to Elimination Station. Kevin mocks Drew about how much he likes Elimination Station and that he doesn’t like more people coming, because they’ll eat his food, stop him from smoking, and take up sleeping room! Snork. Everyone greets Teri & Ian. Mary interviews that their appearance didn’t shock her. She thinks Charla & Mirna are coming soon. Everyone is shocked to hear how well Charla & Mirna are doing now. After the clip, Peggy asks how Elimination Station was. Ian says it was great and it was 250 yards from where they went on their honeymoon (for a bit more on that, see my interview with Teri & Ian). Teri says the place was lovely. Peggy then moves on and asks if there were any teams they didn’t like on the race. Teri says they were all great. Peggy mocks her for being a politician. Ian says that teams have different styles, but they were all great. Peggy asks if they were intimidated by Rob & Amber. Ian says no, but they were glad people were paying so much attention to them. It’s time for another clip from the show. This one focuses on Charla & Mirna. We see them get on both critical flights, which set them up to do extremely well this leg, coming in a day ahead of the Guidos and the eliminated Teri & Ian. After the clip, Peggy exclaims, “Who saw that coming?” Two firsts in a row. Ian says they knew Charla & Mirna would finish first again when they made the plane. Peggy says that Charla’s starting to pick up Mirna’s annoying accent – but she’s been doing that for quite a while now. She also notes she has the roller-skating shoes. Ian says he saw that, too, and it seems pretty smart. Sarah Anne calls in from St. Louis and says kudos to both of them. Her family loves The Amazing Race and she really wanted to see Teri & Ian in the final three again. Sarah Anne says she watched Elimination Station and that Ian had some harsh words for Danny & Oswald then. She wants to know if that is resolved. (Ian said Danny & Oswald tricked some people at travel agents, causing them to get worse flights.) Ian says it’s resolved – and he was wrong. After they got a non-confirmed ticket, they went back to the travel agent and she lied to them again. It was the travel agent’s fault. Ian says he apologized to Ozzy about it later. Teri says that the teams really did get along. Melody calls in from Georgia and says that in the early shows, there were a few racers who really got into the “ugly American” attitude – where they got mad at people for not speaking English. She says that it hasn’t happened much on the more recent races, and she thinks Teri & Ian were especially respectful. Ian says that when you travel the world, you’re ambassadors and you need to represent America well, especially given the current world situation. Peggy agrees, and segues a bit by saying she loved watching Ian do the nail-painting Detour last leg. Ian says that Teri convinced him to try it once they were there, and that it was completely the right call. Peggy agrees, saying they would have been eliminated if they hadn’t have done the nails. Well, actually, they would have been “marked for elimination,” but the 30-minute penalty would have basically guaranteed the Guidos would come in before Teri & Ian in the final part of the leg in Zanzibar. Peggy thinks it’s great a retired police detective was out painting nails. Jeremy from Chicago calls in and says, comparing the Roadblocks from race 3 and this race, which do they think are more challenging? Teri says that the Roadblocks in Season 3 seemed more challenging to her. The challenges in All-Stars were a different type. Season 3’s were about overcoming fear, and in All-Stars it was more sticking with it and overcoming challenges, like carrying the fish. Ian says there was a lot more discomfort and sleep deprivation in All-Stars. It’s time for Teri & Ian’s post-race postcard. Teri goes first. She says hi to everyone still on the race, particularly Joe & Bill. She apologizes to Ozzy for the comments and says, “We love you all.” Ian’s postcard goes out to his fellow racers and to all of the military out there. He says to Eric, Brandon, and Seth, thank you for supporting them through everything. Peggy says it’s sweet how their sons support them. After that, Peggy gives us a clip from the next two-hour episode. We see Danielle & Eric fighting (no! Really?) and Charla dressed in full armor getting bowled over next to a horse. That should be interesting. Peggy thanks Teri & Ian for being on the show and the viewers for watching! Although Ian can be a bit of a curmudgeon at times, I have to say I think Teri & Ian raced with class and guts. There was no question that well into their 50s, these two could hang with the best racers. They just got exceptionally unlucky at the airports and it led to their Philimination. That’s a tough way to lose the race!
