The Finish Line, Episode 11 The Amazing Race: All-Stars – The Finish Line, Episode 11
by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 05/04/2007
This week, our hostess, Peggy Bunker, is back again and she's joined by Danny & Oswald. Oswald reveals quite a randy streak as Team Cha Cha Cha reveals that, well, among other things, they hate being called that.
Peggy starts by saying she's back and she has to warn us – this will be a sassy show! She thanks Dalton Ross for filling in for her last week. Peggy then introduces Danny & Oswald to the show. The guys say hi. Peggy says that it has to be tough to come in fourth two times in a row. Oswald says it's like going on a date, getting your date in bed... and then he just gets up and goes away. Peggy agrees, saying they never got the payoff. Things go even further downhill when Oswald bemoans this saying, “I never got my pearl necklace.” Okay then.
Peggy quickly moves on after that exchange. She reminds everyone that Danny & Oswald had a 30-minute penalty to deal with, and asks if they felt like giving up with that penalty. Danny says no. He felt they were actually a lot more cutthroat, trying to stay in the game. Peggy says she thought they were actually the funniest team – with more great one-liners and wit. Oswald thanks her and says that it's their style. They wanted to be good competitors, while not losing who they are as people. Danny agrees and says that's what keeps it fun. Peggy asks if it was as much fun this time around. They both say it was more fun. Oswald says that they knew what was in store for them this time around and how hectic the travel would be. The show plays a clip of a coal-covered Danny & Oswald chasing Phil off the Pit Stop mat. They both giggle with glee after seeing that.
Peggy says that “rumor has it,” Oswald and Phil are dating now. She wants to know if this is true. Snork. Danny corrects her, saying HE and Phil are dating. Oswald says that Danny “likes the chocolate.” Urk. Peggy ignores this comment and tells viewers that, if they have kids in the room, they might want to consider sending them out.
She then takes the first phone call from Ken in Rhode Island. Ken starts, as usual, by saying, “don't you think Peggy looks lovely today?” Peggy thanks him and notes that Danny & Oswald are “babes” too. Ken amiably agrees and Oswald preens. He then asks about when they were racing in Mozambique on World AIDS Day. Both guys say it was a very memorable leg for them. They dedicated it to Danny's partner, Nelson, who passed away a few years ago. Oswald says that they actually slowed down when they were going through the parade. They were bringing attention to World AIDS Day, handing out condoms, and getting people tested there. They appreciate that CBS showed that on All-Stars.
Oswald throws in a comment about not being able to use the condoms while on the race. Peggy says she has heard “over and over” in the green room how hard it was for Oswald not to be able to date on the race. He says it wasn't hard at all... that was the problem! Peggy and Danny both break into hysterics at that. Oh, Oswald! Danny says that Oswald loses concentration when “he doesn't get it.” Ahem. Peggy wonders if they would have made the final three if Oswald could have dated. Oswald says he won't say what Danny “didn't make me do” for the six weeks, but...
Finally fleeing the subject, Peggy turns to a call from Phil in Pennsylvania. Phil asks, being fan favorites, what they are going to do now. He also wants to know if Oswald said “oh my God!” through every single episode. Danny says Oswald says that every single day, although Oswald says he often says “Ay dios mio!” instead. It's his mother's favorite expression. Peggy asks if it gets on Danny's nerves. He says no.
She says that there were moments, though, when they seemed to get on each others nerves. They both agree that it happens. Peggy says it seems like they quickly got over it, though. They agree. Oswald says that they have patience, tolerance, and give each other time when it's needed.
Now Peggy takes us to a clip from this week's episode. We see the teams having issues with the GPS and finding their way. (Well, everyone except the Beauty Queens.) Danielle whines a lot and Charla keeps touching her buttons. Oswald does pretty well with the GPS, but has a lot of trouble actually finding the soldier once he gets to the right spot. But he finally finds “the man in the bush.”
Oswald says that the soldier was adorable and he wanted to throw him back in the bushes, but there were cameras rolling and all of that “don't ask, don't tell” policy. Oswald says that he walked past the soldier four or five times before he found him. The GPS has a range of about seven feet, and he didn't quite realize that. Peggy notes that the camouflage was good and he was really hard to see. Oswald says that he had to step back to actually finally see him. Danny notes that they had issues with the GPS finding the beacon back on the mountain in South America too.
Peggy then asks what the most difficult task was for them. Danny says the GPS, but Oswald doesn't really agree. Peggy asks Danny about the newspaper task then. Danny says he doesn't even want to remember that. Danny says that Oswald claimed he couldn't do it because he'd fall off, but Danny doesn't understand how you could fall off that thing!
Judith from Calgary calls in and tells Danny & Oswald that they've broken her heart twice now by just missing the final three. They apologize, but she says she forgives them. Judith wants to know if they were recognized traveling around on All-Stars. They say they weren't recognized in South America, but they got recognized in Asia, particularly at the Malaysian airport. She wants to know if they needed extra security. Danny says no, just people pointing at them. Oswald says that CBS tells them they have to say they're filming a documentary or a travel show.
Peggy says that a lot of the All-Stars must have been recognized. She wants to know if they could use this to their advantage. Oswald says it's actually against the rules to do so. You can't go up to a place and say “I'm on The Amazing Race, so you have to upgrade me or get me a better flight.” Danny says it would be great if you could do that. Peggy notes that they can do that now! Oswald says Travelocity can upgrade their tickets to first class if they like. The guys say they will use the trip they won to go to Hong Kong for Chinese New Year next year, but they don't know when they're going to use their Hawaiian trip yet.
We see a quick clip of the guys winning the Fast Forward in Hong Kong. Peggy asks what kind of dance it is they're doing afterwards. They say just don't call it the Cha-Cha-Cha! Danny says that name won't go away. Oswald says it's “getting on our last gay nerve.”
With that, we go to Phil's comments on the pair. He says he hated seeing them go because he loves their spirit. Of course, they were marked for elimination and maybe they had some bad karma from Yielding Eric & Danielle. But he was sad to see them go. Peggy says that Phil still loves them. Oswald clarifies to say that Phil “wants” them. He then brings up that Phil has a book about the 100 things he wants to do in his life (he might be talking about Phil’s book, No Opportunity Wasted, a review of which can be found here). Oswald claims one of those things is Danny & Oswald. He says they're “number 69.” Keep dreaming, Ozzy!
Peggy brings the subject back to the safer ground of the Yield. She notes that Eric & Danielle were not at all happy they Yielded them. Or got on the flight to Guam. Oswald says there was a real chill getting on that flight. His nipples got hard! You know, I think Oswald might just embrace certain stereotypes about gay men. Hmmm... Peggy asks if the other teams understood why they had to do it. Oswald says he hopes they understand now. They needed to do it.
Peggy brings up this week's Detour. She says that cleaning the planes looks tough and wants to know what was the hardest thing about it. Danny says it really hurt when he got the cleaning fluid in his eyes. Oswald felt bad about getting all of the soldiers wet. Peggy doesn't believe that was an accident. Oswald says the captain was really mean. Peggy thought it was very interesting seeing the look at the military base in Guam. Oswald says it was very interesting and that task wasn't created for the race. Those planes do need to be cleaned. Danny says the plane they were helping clean was actually the one their guide's husband flew. Peggy then asks about the cargo drop task. She says it looked easier. Danny says that they were planning on doing that task – but they got lost!
Peggy takes us to a clip of this week's Detour now. Mirna & Charla take the cargo challenge, while the other three teams scrub planes. Unfortunately for Oswald & Danny, they do the worst among the plane scrubbers. Then they get terribly lost on the way to the Roadblock. Everyone laughs when Oswald says he needs the captain to come tell his maid how to clean. Both Oswald & Danny say the task was very hard. And it involved using very strong chemicals. Danny's eyes burned for the rest of the day.
Cindy from Texas calls in and asks Ozzy if he'll follow Danny's instructions any more. Danny says that he will follow every instruction he gives because Oswald is his best friend! Cindy says Oswald & Danny are her favorite team ever!
Linda from Texas calls in too. She says she's sorry to see them go because they were her number one pick. She says they told Phil on the mat that they wanted Mirna & Charla to win. She wonders if they changed their minds on that after seeing the show. Oswald starts talking in a bizarre accent a la Mirna talking to foreigners. He says that people have different styles. Charla & Mirna are insane, but Oswald & Danny like them and think they're inherently nice people. And you could really tell they wanted to win the race. He respects that. Peggy agrees, but says the accent thing grates on a lot of people.
RealityNewsOnline reader Jamison calls in from Massachusetts next. He asks about the cookie-eating Detour from a few legs back. But first he says that the guys and Mary & Peach were his favorite teams from Season Two. He then starts asking about the cookie, but Oswald tries to interrupt him to ask what he's wearing.
Jamison plows on, noting the clue said there was only one cookie that had licorice in it in a box. He wonders how Danny got so confused about the clue – thinking every cookie in a box was either licorice or not. Danny says he is easily confused and he has Oswald in his life to keep track of the details. Oswald says it's too bad Danny doesn't always listen to him, though. Danny says he lives a very happy life by not paying attention to details. Oswald says that the Detour was the only time they really had an argument on the race. Peggy says that they each seem to know when to back off on things.
Peach from Georgia – of course – calls in and Oswald asks what she's wearing! Peach asks about Macau. She knows that was a bad leg for them. She says that she heard there was a task there not shown on TV. She wants to know about that. She also wants to know if they were sorry they didn't do the noodle task after seeing the other teams do it.
Oswald says that Peach is right. There was another task where they had to go to the port and handle dried fish in the market. It was right after the tower Roadblock. He then says that, from a distance perspective, they picked the easiest Detour. But the directions were in Portuguese, and even though it's the official second language of Macau, nobody speaks it. Plus, their taxi driver was terrible. Peggy says she would have loved seeing the guys do the noodle task because they would have been cute jumping up and down on the pole. I don't know if Oswald could have taken the sexual tension!
Maria calls in from Canada and says it's too bad the guys just missed the final three again. She says there are a lot of changes between when they raced the first time and this time. She wants to know which change benefited them the most and which were worst for them. Oswald says they loved the Intersection because they got to work with Uchenna & Joyce, who were their favorite folks they met on this race. They're great people, humble and down-to-earth. Danny says that they won't let teams can't take free transportation from others any more. So, on the first season they got a lot of free upgrades and transportation. But, now, you aren't allowed to do that any more.
Peggy next takes us to Oswald & Danny getting Philiminated and having their mat chat. They talk about wanting Charla & Mirna to win and having no regrets. They seem sad, but not too sad, about getting Philiminated. They talk about having each other in their lives forever and then joke sweetly with each other. Peggy chuckles after the clip. She asks if it really was a good experience for their friendship. The guys say yes, but it was really just more of what they are in regular life. Oswald says that he doesn't know why they're such good friends, but they are. Oswald says that the key to any good relationship is an even give and take. Both people have to respect each other and work together.
Next, Peggy shows clips of the three remaining teams declaring that they're going to win the race and posturing for the cameras. Peggy says the next episode's going to be a good one. She asks Danny & Oswald their thoughts on the final three teams, but they can't say what they know. Oswald says Charla & Mirna are tough. Peggy says that it looks like the Beauty Queens get snippy with each other for the first time. Oswald says that there's swimming in the next leg and the Beauty Queens have built in flotation devices!
The guys then note that Eric is great at coming from behind. Peggy asks if Eric's going to come out. Oswald says Eric isn't gay, but he loved seeing Danny in a tiny swimsuit in Mozambique. They show a picture of Eric shirtless and the guys giggle at his two nipple rings. Danny says that, in six months, he'll be dating Eric and everyone laughs.
Kristin calls in from Georgia next and asks about the whole Yield thing. She says the editing was choppy and she wants to know if Dustin & Kandice just gave them money to keep the guys from Yielding them or if they were specific on who to Yield. Danny & Oswald say the girls were specific about Yielding Eric & Danielle. Oswald says that they did not “sell” the Yield. They gave the Beauty Queens their word that if they gave them money, they would do it. Kristin says she wondered because Dustin & Kandice told Eric & Danielle at the mat that they just gave the guys money not to Yield themselves. Oswald says, “that was a lie.” Danny says that they lied to their faces!
Kristin says that on both seasons the Beauty Queens have been on, other teams have said negative things about them, but they seem positive and upbeat on the show. Oswald says that, on rest periods, everyone on the show is nice to each other. But when the “race rage” comes on, they're tough competitors. Peggy says people are there to win the race. Oswald says yes, but you're also there to have a good time.
Brendon from Canada calls in and says the guys ran a great race. He asks about visiting Auschwitz. He wants to know what the guys took from that place. Danny says it was a powerful place, but it hit Oswald especially hard. It took him a while to get back, emotionally, from there. It was a dark, eerie place. Oswald says that Auschwitz was about anyone who wasn't the same as the people who weren't “the supreme race’s” ideal. Gays, the handicapped, and others beside Jews were also there, so it hit them very hard. Oswald grew up in Cuba where being gay is illegal. There aren't concentration camps there, but people with AIDS are put in a special area and aren't allowed to be in the general population – at least for a while. Oswald says that one of the things they enjoy about America is the freedom, but with the existing presidency there is a bit of social genocide going on and it's something to think about with the next election.
Monica from Ohio calls in and Danny says they're bringing sexy back for her! She asks if there were any other rule changes since their first race that really affected them. She notes the whole begging for money thing. Oswald says that some airports don't allow you to beg. He also says it's just easier for women to beg for money than for men. Danny says it's easier for the Beauty Queens to get money than for the guys. It's just a reality. Danny says that Danielle always wore low-cut shirts on the race, partially for that reason. Oswald says that there was no one around at 6:00 am in Macau to beg from anyway. Peggy asks if they are still allowed to beg at all. Oswald says you are allowed to ask people for money. But you can't say you're on the race. Danny notes you're still walking around with an Amazing Race envelope and a camera crew, so...
With that, Peggy shows us a clip from this week's Elimination Station. This week the folks join the rest of the teams getting ready for the final mat. The teams say they are disappointed to see Oswald & Danny out. Kevin thinks Eric & Danielle are going to win. Drew says he's going underdog and says Charla & Mirna. Mary hopes the Beauty Queens win. Oswald wants Charla & Mirna. Peggy says that it's really cool to have two all-female teams in the final three and no all-female team has won yet.
It's time for the guys' post-race postcards. Ozzy thanks Danny first and foremost for putting up with him and being such a good partner. Danny thanks Oswald as well for being a wonderful and tolerant friend. He also thanks his friend Stephen for telling him what a Yield is and how it works on the race.
Peggy says that on next week's “Finish Line,” all three final teams will be in the studio. She then takes us to a clip of the finale showing the Beauty Queens fighting and all of the teams scrambling to win. Peggy says we'll find out who takes the prize next week! She thanks the guys for being on the show and asks if they're planning anything new and fabulous. Oswald says their lives are pretty good as they are and they're just continuing them. With that, Peggy signs off and says she'll see us for the finale episode next week!
Danny & Oswald are a funny team. I'm not sure they quite have the drive to win that can push a team past certain obstacles, but they did far better on All-Stars than I expected. They have a great team dynamic and are good with people and I think those strengths really showed here.
