The Finish Line, Episode 10
The Amazing Race: All-Stars – The Finish Line, Episode 10 by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 04/27/2006 This week Dalton Ross guest host's The Finish Line. Since he has no newly-Philiminated racers to grill, Dalton brings in Tammy Gaghan and another secret, special ex-racer to chat. And RealityNewsOnline's very own Jenn Brasler is on the phone to give her take on the latest goings on in the race. Dalton starts the show by chanting “karma-karma-karma chameleon!” Boy George would be so proud! Dalton greets us and introduces his special guest, Tammy Gaghan of the Family Edition's Gaghan Family. He says he hopes he isn't crashing the set and it isn't “the blind leading the naked.” Okay then, Dalton. The camera man isn't really with the program, though, as he doesn't seem to want to show Tammy on camera. Hey, maybe she is naked! Nope. Not naked! Dalton asks Tammy what she thought of the most recent episode and the camera operator deigns to show her. Tammy says she normally doesn't like non-elimination legs. She thinks it's stupid. She likes the concept of being “marked for elimination” vs. begging. But, that said, she really liked this episode. Dalton agrees about liking the “marked for elimination” concept, but doesn't understand how it was much of a penalty for Eric & Danielle to have a 30-minute penalty on the leg prior to another non-elimination leg. Good point, Dalton. Tammy agrees with him. She wonders if they would have gotten a 60-minute penalty if they came in last this leg. I think that's unlikely. Dalton goes on to say that the big moment in the leg was when Danny & Oswald used the Yield. He says he has an opinion on it, but wants to hear Tammy's thoughts first. Tammy says she doesn't get the “karma” thing with using the Yield. Amen, Tammy! She doesn't see why it would affect them in their next life. Heh. Tammy says they didn't use the Yield to avoid alienating people early. But in Danny & Oswald's case, it was late in the race and they really needed money, so their actions made sense. She says it's not a “dirty thing.” It's something in the race. Dalton agrees. It's the last Yield in the game, so no one can use a Yield against you in revenge later in the game. So, why shouldn't they use it? Why should Danny & Oswald be upset about using it or Eric & Danielle call them such nasty names? It's a tool, so use it. Tammy thinks Eric isn't as serious as people think. She thinks he's actually joking. I'm not entirely sure I agree with her on that one. But she thinks Eric is playing it up and having fun. Dalton shows a clip of Danny & Oswald's Yield use this episode. We see them negotiate with the Beauty Queens and come to a deal and then Yield the disgruntled Eric & Danielle. While watching the clip, Eric doesn't look like he's joking around to me. Dalton says that Eric's confessional interviews look angry. Tammy says it's just the prompters in the interviews. Maybe. Dalton now has his first phone guest, Eric Goldman of IGTV, on the phone. Dalton asks Eric about the Yield. He says it's ridiculous to get righteous and angry about people using it. It's not his favorite part of the game, but it is part of it. He asks what Eric thinks about Danny & Oswald's deal-making with the Yield. Eric says they were pretty desperate with their money situation, so that might have been why they said they would Yield anyone the Beauty Queens wanted instead of waiting for Charla & Mirna to show up. Tammy says that Danny & Oswald didn't know when Mirna & Charla would show at the task – they could have gotten lost on the way there. Dalton notes the Beauty Queens made a great deal. Eric agrees wholeheartedly. Eric also wonders about Mirna's whole shtick with saying that using the Yield is bad karma and not fair. He can't help wondering if she would get all upset if he played a board game with her and he sent her back three spaces! He doesn't get her position. Dalton says that people who've been on these shows say it all gets too personal to equate to a board game. Dalton says that some people didn't like Survivor: All-Stars because the pre-existing relationships and dynamics screwed with the game too much. He asks Eric what he thinks about The Amazing Race: All-Stars. Eric says that, unlike many, he liked the All-Star version of Survivor. But he thinks The Amazing Race's All-Star edition works even better since the relationships can't affect the outcome of the game as directly. Ultimately, you have to race for yourself. So, it really works. We now have our first caller. Jamison calls in from Massachusetts and tells Tammy the Gaghans were his favorite family on their edition. He also says he's read some of her daughter’s writing and thinks she's good. Jamison then asks Tammy about checking in at the Pit Stop. He wants to know if it's true that once you check in you have to move out of the way as quickly as possible. Tammy says that it depends on what kind of a location you're in at the time. If they're in a place they can hide a team to the side, they will. They love the reaction when teams come in not knowing whether or not they're the last team there. Tammy says that in New Orleans, they had to put the Weavers and Gaghans up on a balcony because there wasn't time to get them out before the Schroeders checked in and were eliminated. Tammy says that it was hard watching that. Dalton says, “C'mon! You loved it!” Tammy says that they weren't friends, but it's still hard to watch someone be that upset. John from Texas calls in and congratulates Tammy on her daughter Carissa having raced the longest length of the youngest racers. He then asks whether the tactics Danny & Oswald and the Beauty Queens used with the Yield have an affect on how viewers feel about the race – and the ganging up feel. He also asks if she thinks it's stupid to only put Yields on non-elimination leg. Tammy quickly points out that Yields aren't always on non-elimination legs. Her team was eliminated in a leg with a Yield in it. Tammy says it's happened other times as well. Eric says that this use of the Yield had a bit of a Survivor feel with the negotiating. He thinks it's too bad Danny felt that using the Yield led to bad karma and coming in last. Chip & Kim used the Yield and won, the Linz's used the Yield and won. He also notes that it was smart for the Beauty Queens to Yield Eric & Danielle last night because they were already behind and it gave that much more of a chance to eliminate them. It didn't happen, but it was a good idea. Dalton says that you might love or hate Rob & Amber, but they really changed the way some people play the game. He notes the food challenge that Rob couldn't finish and how it was “genius” to convince other teams to quit after him. I completely agree, Dalton! Eric agrees, as well. Dalton likes seeing people find new ways to play the game. He thanks Eric for chatting with them too. Now Dalton turns to Charla & Mirna. He says that they've been the talk of the season and wants to know what Tammy thinks of them. Tammy says she sometimes feels she should walk around with a sign saying “Free Charla!” Snork. She thinks Charla's very nice, but she is besmirched by association with Mirna. Dalton says that in Mirna's interviews she always goes on about playing honestly and fairly. Tammy agrees. She also says that Mirna has all these sweaters, jewelry, make up, etc. on in her interviews and wonders why she has all that on the race. Is she just showing off for the cameras? Jared from New York calls in and says he loves her family! He says that the deal Dustin & Kandice made with Danny & Oswald might have been dirty, but it really worked for them. He thinks they are playing the race it was supposed to be played. He asks Tammy what she thinks about that and he also asks her about an unused Fast Forward from Costa Rica on her race and what happened with that. He saw a bonus clip that showed it was there, but no team went for it. Tammy says that they would have loved to have used that Fast Forward, but you had to stand like a statue for 30 minutes and you had to wait to have full white makeup put on. She says that her family got a nice edit, but it would have been incredibly hard. If anyone had moved at all, the team would have gotten a 10 minute penalty – for every time they moved. So that's why none of the teams took it. She says that, in hindsight, they should have taken it since she couldn't find the bean in the pile and they were eliminated that leg. As to this race, Tammy says she's split between wanting the Beauty Queens or Danny & Oswald to win. She thinks Dustin & Kandice keep a wonderful sense of composure while they race. Dalton says he still can't tell Dustin & Kandice apart, but they're playing a great game! Dalton goes back to the Fast Forward and notes that the Guidos took the Fast Forward and came in last that leg in Season One – so you have to be careful. While it's true the Guidos came in last, it's because they hung out in a hotel instead of booking it to the Pit Stop! It wasn't the fault of the Fast Forward. It's time for RealityNewsOnline's Jenn Brasler to phone in as a guest on the show! Yay Jenn! Unfortunately, the web folk label her Jen Blasser. Oops. Jenn says that she agrees with everyone who called in that the Yield is just part of the game. It's not dirty or unfair to use it. It's part of the game and it's a race! Dalton asks about using the first Yield earlier in the race. Jenn says she would use it under the right circumstances. If there was a team right behind and they were racing to avoid coming in last, she would use it. If the circumstances were right, she wouldn't hesitate to use it. Dalton now brings up Danny & Oswald getting lost on the way to the Dragon Boat Detour. He says the clip of Dustin & Kandice doing the noodle Detour is one of his favorites ever, but he's not going to say more or he's going to get in trouble. Heh. With that, we get a clip of the teams doing the Detour from last week. Charla messes Mirna up on the noodles and there is much bouncing on bamboo. Meanwhile, Danny & Oswald seem to be unable to find the ocean. After the clip, Dalton says he's a little upset because he told the producers that he wanted the clip to show Dustin & Kandice bouncing on the bamboo over and over. I think Dalton needs to compose himself! Tammy's not sure that would have kept a family show rating. Dalton says that Charla & Mirna sweet talk many with their weird accents, but they couldn't do it this time. He then asks what Jenn thinks of their behavior. Jenn says that Mirna's finally getting what's coming to her. She always focuses on the other teams and if something goes wrong, it's always Charla's fault. Mirna doesn't understand that communicating is really important. One of the reason Dustin & Kandice do so well is that they communicate well together. Mirna just orders Charla around. Dalton says that when you get the Detour, it's critical which option you choose. And you don't have much time to decide. It's also not always clear which task is best. Tammy says that this season has been a bit different, but for most other seasons the harder task is usually the quicker task. She wonders if the producers decided to do it differently so teams like Charla & Mirna could have the opportunity to go far in the race. She says that, every single time this season, the easier task has been quicker. She says that in the family season they always chose the harder task and then later on wondered why they did it! I'm not sure I agree with Tammy that it has always been the “easier” task that was fastest this season, but it certainly has been on more than one occasion – most notably painting nails vs. filling and carrying coal sacks. Tammy brings up the blackjack vs. log cutting Detour on her season. She says they didn't read the clue properly and didn't realize they needed to win five hands – they thought they only needed to win one. But once you're there, you don't want to give up. Dalton rightly says it's not always the harder task that's faster, sometimes it's the scarier task – like going sky jumping. But now it's much harder to tell which task to pick. It's time to bring in yet another guest. Terry from Season 10's Tom & Terry calls in to say hi. He says he can't agree with everyone 100% on things. First off, he begs America not to get down on Dustin & Kandice. He says they're wonderful people. He does say “God bless you” for saying that about Mirna. He thinks it's weird that Charla has to do all the physical tasks. Now, Charla does do a lot, but Mirna also does physical tasks, like the biking/newspaper delivery Roadblock a few legs back. Terry's really curious to find out if Eric & Danielle would have been eliminated this week if they had come in last. Dalton said they would have gotten another 30-minute penalty. Before Terry hangs up, Dalton asks him if he has a pick for who he thinks is going to win. Terry chuckles and says that he would reeeaaallly like Dustin & Kandice to win, but he's sure there's a fire burning in Eric now. Dalton asks Jenn what she thinks. Jenn agrees that she would love to see Dustin & Kandice win, but agrees that Eric is a strong player and he's already dragged Danielle through the rest of the race, so he can drag her past the finish line too. Tammy says that sometimes you don't realize how much you like a team until you think they're going to be eliminated. She was really worried Eric & Danielle would be eliminated last night. Hmmm... for me, they have been my least favorite team on the race. And I still felt that way this leg, hoping they would be out. Their personalities do nothing for me. Tammy says they are a put-together team that took the place of a “real” team, but she likes them now. Nope, I haven't changed my opinion. I still wish they hadn't been on the race. Dalton notes that BJ & Tyler were peeved they weren't on the race. He says BJ must have some sort of “reality radar” as he appears on reality TV all the time. Dalton says he's seen him in the audience of American Idol multiple times this season! Tammy says BJ's a really nice guy. Now it's time for Mark from Kentucky to call in. He says that he hoped a family would be on All-Stars. He asks Tammy what she's doing now. Tammy says she's a substitute teacher, but otherwise a stay at home Mom. She's still running and she and Bill are hoping to run all 50 states before they turn 50. She says she's run 11 of them so far and is running a marathon in Memphis soon. Bridget from Pennsylvania calls in and says that seeing Carissa eliminated almost broke her heart! She then asks if Bill & Tammy would consider racing as a two-person team if there were another All-Stars. Tammy says that they would do it in a second! But Dalton notes that they'd lose the good edit! Tammy agrees, but says it would be a lot of fun. We now see a clip of Mirna struggling to use a funky stick shift while Charla fears her partner will run her over again and again with the car. You'd think Mirna would have practiced more with stick shifts between her races! Dalton now introduces us to a second special guest – Carissa Gaghan is here! She still looks cute as a bug. Dalton tries feebly to identify with the youngster by saying it's “totally rad” she's here. He then asks her what she thought of the most recent episode. Carissa says it was a lot of fun! She especially liked when Mirna got the car stuck in the corner. Dalton agrees and asks Carissa who she's rooting for. Carissa says that, so far, she's rooting for Dustin & Kandice. Dalton asks if it's a “blonde solidarity” kind of thing. Carissa doesn't rise to the bait and says she just thinks they're good racers and very competitive. Dalton agrees. He then says there's a special caller – Peggy Bunker's on the phone! She laughs and says she was trying to call in, but she “couldn't remember the damn number.” Heh. Peggy thanks Dalton for filling in for her this week. Dalton asks what Peggy thinks of the Yield. Peggy says she thinks Danny & Oswald are great and that Eric & Danielle are incredibly lucky. They've been Yielded twice and they're still on the race. She applauds them for hanging in and Peggy thought Danielle would turn on the waterworks – but she didn't! With that, Peggy says “see you next week” and hangs up. Dalton grouches that the chair on this show is much nicer than the one he has on Survivor Live. Judy from somewhere calls in and says that she loves the Gaghans. She hopes to see Carissa racing with one of her parents on a future race. Tammy tells Carissa to say who she really wants to race with. Carissa says she'd rather race with her dad because he's been on more marathons and is stronger and better with maps. Ouch, Tammy! Phil in Pennsylvania calls and says hi to Tammy and Carissa. He wonders what teams they would like to see on a second All-Stars. Carissa says she'd like to see the Clowns. Everyone agrees. Carissa would also like to see BJ & Tyler and Tom & Terry on the race. Tammy says she'd like Ken & Girard to get on the race. She would also like to see Colin & Christie. Dalton says both Colin & Christie and Tara & Will were fascinating to watch. Tammy says that she loved Steve & Dave as well. Dalton says that they've mentioned scary challenges on the race and last week certainly had one. He then shows a clip of the Roadblock this past week. We see the racers jumping off the 61-story building and screaming with fear and delight. I doubt any of them will forget doing that! Dalton asks Carissa if she's jealous. She says, of course she is! Who wouldn't be? Dalton then asks Carissa if she had a favorite challenge on her race. Carissa says she loved the centrifuge on her race. Dalton says he thinks he would have been sick! Monica from Ohio calls in and says she loves their family. She says that some people are critical of Danny & Oswald for selling out their Yield. Monica thinks they did what they had to do, and everyone on the show agrees. Monica says that in previous seasons teams could panhandle for money during the race. She wants to know if they're still allowed to do that. Tammy says she doesn't know, but she thinks it brought a bad image to the show – especially when panhandling in poorer areas. Tammy says there was one family in her season that was spending money like crazy and buying pizzas, etc. and then they'd go panhandle for money. And they didn't need to do that. It was tacky. Ken from Rhode Island calls in and says it's an action-packed show today! He says Carissa is awesome! He then says, in regards to Charla & Mirna, whenever there's a tough task Mirna says that Charla has to do that. Carissa agrees with that. She also doesn't like to hear Mirna saying Charla doesn't do any of the Roadblocks. She doesn't think it's fair that one person can do all of them. Dalton quickly corrects Carissa and says that they do have to split them now. Mirna also does do some Roadblocks. I think people are being a bit unfair about that since they don't like her. Teresa from Colorado calls in and has some thoughts on Charla & Mirna. She doesn't like how mean everyone is to them! She says that when you see a strong woman people are hard on her. She says that if Charla really didn't like Mirna she wouldn't be on a team with her. Teresa thinks Charla & Mirna are great players. They know what they're doing and how to play the game. Dalton says that people like Charla. He thinks Mirna sometimes loses her composure on a personal level, as she did during the most recent Detour. Tammy says people want the underdogs to do well, but we're getting a negative edit on Mirna and it doesn't look good. But Tammy agrees that they're great racers and nobody works an airport like them. I agree with Teresa that Mirna is given too hard a time because she doesn't come across as likable. She's a very strong racer and is apparently the best racer ever when it comes to finding flights and getting on them at an airport. Too bad she can't drive a stick shift Dalton says that someone seems to lose it next week too. We see a clip of the upcoming episode that shows teams working with the Air Force and Danielle breaks down in tears. Again.
