The Bachelor 9: Episode 1 Episode 901
Air Date: 10/02/2006
The Bachelor is back, and this time he's not just a figurative Prince Charming -- he's the real deal! Prince Lorenzo Borghese's family name can be found all over Italy's capital -- on Rome's most prominent park, on buildings and on street signs -- even on the Vatican itself. Though he's American, his family goes back centuries in Italy, with a pope and even the sister of Emperor Napoleon in the family tree.
His grandmother, Princess Marcella Borghese, founded a well-known cosmetics company in the 1950s, and today his family is one of the largest importers of Italian cosmetics in the world. Born in Italy, Lorenzo has grown up in the United States and comes across as a regular American guy. He lives and works in New York City, and as much as he loves it, finds it hard to meet the right girl there. He has a difficult time finding a woman who will like him for him as opposed to his lineage and title. He never mentions that he's a prince and doesn't use his title, but his friends find it convenient to bring up in conversations with women they're trying to impress -- pretty much ruining the modest Lorenzo's evenings out.
So now Lorenzo returns to Rome in search of love. His parents, Prince Francesco and Princess Amanda Borghese, are supportive, although his father admits he uttered a "Mamma Mia" in shock when he first learned of Lorenzo's plan. Princess Amanda thinks her son will make a great husband when he finds the right person, as any proud mother would think, prince or not.
With such an amazing Bachelor, the search is on for truly amazing women. The show producers deliver bouquets of roses to the chosen ones. Along with the news that they are going to be vying for the prince, the women are informed they have to pack and leave at that moment, sending the already excited women into a tizzy. One bachelorette, Erica, already knows she's the perfect match for the prince. Her housekeeper and her mother both help her pack. Erica contemplates bringing fur to ward off the chill, but her mother dissuades her, "because of animal rights." Erica wants to be a real princess and hopes that this prince isn't the type to fall for a girl off the farm. Jami, a fellow Texan, jokes with her family about bringing overalls, as if she were a farm girl.
Kim believes in fairy tales. Jeanette models her sexiest bikini for her friends as they help her decide what to pack. Rosella's traditional Italian family celebrates with a toast.
Once in Rome, the women go shopping, do a little sightseeing and get manicures in preparation for meeting their prince. Everywhere they go they see the Borghese name, which leaves Jennifer speechless. The bachelorettes note that if one of them were to marry him, it would also become her name. Claudia tries on the title "Princess" for size and finds it suits her. Rosella makes a wish at the Trevi Fountain.
The first meeting will take place at the Villa Borghese, a 16th century palace that was the home of Lorenzo's ancestors. As befitting a prince, he pulls up in a limo and greets Host Chris Harrison. Chris asks Lorenzo to elaborate on the "prince thing," and Lorenzo explains that in the 1600s, when his ancestor became Pope Paul V, he extended titles to his family. He admits that his Italian is "menu Italian," and that he's not fluent. Chris fills him in briefly on the night's proceedings, telling him he will have all night to get to know them and will not have to make a decision on who to send home until the morning.
The women in the arriving limos are so excited. They shriek with glee when they see Lorenzo. Though he doesn't hear them, he's feeling nervous, with a million butterflies in his stomach. And then it begins. Lisa comes out first, leaving lipstick on his cheek when she kisses him hello. They make small talk.
April is next, and comments that she likes his place. Kim emerges, followed by Jeanette and Jessica. With the second limo comes Jami, who greets him with a "Howdy," and Claudia, who points out her blue gown matches his tie. Britt comes out next, and she and Lorenzo compliment each other on their outfits and spin for each other. Rita from Richmond is next, followed by Laura, who twirls for him as well.
With the third limo is Rosella, who greets him in Italian and tells him his princess has arrived. He notes that her Italian is better than his. Meri emerges, followed by Gina, Heather and Sarah. After that Host Chris steps in for a brief check in with Lorenzo, and points out helpfully that there are 10 more women to go.
The next limo pulls up, and Jen mentions to Lorenzo that she's from Florida, where he went to school. Carissa is next, followed by Andrea, who greets him in Italian. Desiree adjusts her dress and wriggles with delight when she emerges from the limo and spots Lorenzo. She immediately tells him he is handsome, then squeals about how hot he is as she walks away. Tara compliments him, while Erica gives him a more backhanded compliment, telling him he's more cute in person. Ellen follows, along with Elyse, Renee and finally Sadie, who jokes easily with him. It seems like a strange but wonderful dream to Lorenzo.
Inside, the women are getting the party started. They can't get over how cute and gorgeous and gentlemanly Lorenzo is. Chris tells the Bachelor that he has a rose and two-carat diamond earrings to give to the woman who makes an impression on him that night. Lorenzo is loving the feeling of having 25 gorgeous women in his bachelor pad. He moves around, chatting with the women in groups and singly. He talks with Jami about Jon Bon Jovi. Erica, who wore her own tiara to get attention, has surveyed the group and decided that she's in the top three. She reasons that only half the women there went to college and four had tattoos, which didn't fit a prince. She tells Lorenzo that she actually flew coach for him -- something she's never done. Rosella confides to the other women that she sold her car to be there, to pay for expenses such as gowns. She has faith that she's going to be a princess. The prince talks to Rosella about her Italian, which she learned from her parents growing up.
Lorenzo's finding juggling 25 women very difficult. He tries desperately to get to know them in the limited time he has. He chats with Jennifer, who tells him that he's handsome.
Then, a waiter walks in with a rose and the diamond earrings on a pillow. The women know what the rose is for, but they focus on the earrings immediately. The competitive drive is raised in the women as they examine the earrings. Desiree decides to "rock the chart and swoon him." She interrupts his conversation with Carissa and steals him away. In the garden, she gives him a little impromptu dance, calls him baby a lot, and asks to kiss him. He lets her kiss his cheek. Though he doesn't usually like forward women, he finds himself focusing a lot of energy on her. Kim finally takes him away. She wants the earrings really badly.
Lisa has her whole love life mapped out. She wants to get married at 27, but she wants to be engaged for a year, which leaves her about 10 months to find someone. She tells Lorenzo that she's a tree hugger from Portland, and convinces him to go hug a tree in the garden. It's the first time he's ever done anything like that, and he finds that he likes it. The other bachelorettes watch and laugh. Heather, meanwhile, is getting terribly drunk, slurring and squealing. Gina has decided Lorenzo's much better than Britain's Prince William. Andrea is starting to feel pressured to capture his attention. So she heads out to the balcony overlooking a courtyard where Lorenzo is talking with Rita and Gina. Andrea opens her mouth and begins to sing an opera aria.
Lorenzo's never been serenaded by a woman before, but he enjoys it, calling for an encore. Rita, on the other hand, is put out by the interrupting of her time with Lorenzo.
By the time Lorenzo gets to talk with Heather, she appears totally drunk. They make awkward, barely coherent conversation. But Heather thinks she's beautiful and that her age gives her an advantage over the younger women.
Sarah asks Lorenzo if he's ever dated a black woman. He stammers that he's been in a series of long relationships and hasn't had the chance. Sadie is saving herself for marriage, but doesn't bring it up when she steals him away for a little bit of time together.
Then Host Chris shows up tinkling his glass, and asks everyone to gather round. He then tells them they wanted to give the local women a chance to compete for the Bachelor. He introduces two beautiful Italian bachelorettes, Agnese and Cosetta. The American bachelorettes are instantly on their guard, some rolling their eyes in frustration.
Lorenzo goes off with the two Italian women to talk. He learns that Agnese is a student, while Cosetta, a dancer, offers to dance for him, stirring Agnese's jealousy. Meri, Erica and Lisa sit nearby and stare at the trio, trying to intimidate the Italian women. Lisa hates them already. She and Erica go up to them and try to drag Lorenzo away, which he does with some reluctance.
The Italian women come right back and steal him away. Then Agnese tells Cosetta to back off in no uncertain terms ("Bye!") and she talks with Lorenzo in charmingly accented English. He soon discovers she can't understand him too well.
Lorenzo decides he knows who should get the rose. He goes purposefully towards it as the women watch him closely. He takes the rose and earrings from their perch and finds...Lisa. It's the tree hugging. The women watch from the balcony, seething with jealousy and offering half-hearted congratulations. Lisa is there for Lorenzo and doesn't care, showing off the dangling diamond jewels in her ears to the others.
The sun comes up and a rooster crows. They've been up all night and are starting to look a bit bedraggled. Lorenzo has a big decision to make -- he must send 15 women home. Lisa's already gotten her rose, so there are 11 roses left to give. They go to:
Kim
Jeanette
Jami
Ellen
Sarah
Desiree
Jennifer
Gina
Erica
Sadie
Agnese
For the remaining women, it's a painful disappointment, especially for Rosella, who believed she would find her prince in Italy. For the other aspiring princesses, their Italian adventure has just begun.

The Bachelor: Rome, Episode 1 – Kiss That Cute Little Frog
by Ashley Lundy -- 10/03/2006
Everybody knows that you get a prince by kissing a frog, right? Or, you could come on The Bachelor: Rome, and try to get a rose from Prince Lorenzo Borghese. In this first episode of the new season, the prince has to get rid of half the potential princesses. Who annoys us quickly? Who goes? Who stays? Read on to find out!
Welcome to the ninth season of The Bachelor! It’s good to be here. This season, our bachelor is a real life prince, and his famous name can be found all over Rome. On the streets, the most favorite park, even on the front of the Vatican. In a quick video montage, the bachelorettes say they are ecstatic about meeting a real prince. Being a princess is a fairytale they have all dreamed about. It will remain a fairytale for all of them except one, but hey, I don’t want to spoil their fun.
Our host, Chris Harrison, welcomes us. He introduces us to our bachelor, the 34-year-old Prince Lorenzo Borghese, and says his history is as rich as Rome itself. Lorenzo says he never introduces himself as Prince Lorenzo. He prefers just Lorenzo. Although, he admits that his friends do it when they are trying to pick up girls. Hey, man, that’s why they hang out with you!
Even though he is an Italian prince, he is also an American citizen. He lives in New York City and loves it there. His family is one of the world’s largest providers of cosmetics and he helps run the biz.
Lorenzo flies himself to his parents’ house as he tells us that he has been a private pilot for roughly seven years. He loves to fly and clear his head. His parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary and he looks at them as role models. He wants to have the same thing some day. His father is Prince Francesco Borghese and he seems like a charming fellow. His response to Lorenzo being on the show is simply, “mama mía.” Cute. His mother, Amanda Borghese, says that Lorenzo will make a great husband. He has a good heart, but he doesn’t wear it on his sleeve. She compares him to Rome, which she says has a special soul that you feel when you get close to it.
We get to see some of the bachelorettes finding out they have been accepted onto the show. They get flowers and the shocking news that they must pack and leave for Rome right then! Erica, a 23-year-old socialite from Houston, consults with her mother and her housekeeper to select her wardrobe for the trip. Erica says she expected to be picked because she is best fit for this particular bachelor. I know already that I will not like spoiled rich kid Erica.
Jami, a 27-year-old event planner from Galveston, is the complete opposite from Erica. Jami admits she is small town but she is confident she is princess material. Sadie, a 23-year-old publicist from Carlsbad, California, calls her mother and screams over the speakerphone. Kim, a 27-year-old interior designer, wants to meet her prince charming. I am going to get tired of the phrase “prince charming.”
Jeanette, a 23-year-old teacher from Bloomingdale, Illinois, is seen trying on a bathing suit and says she is putting her entire heart into this. That doesn’t look like her heart. Rosella, a 27-year-old make-up artist from Chicago says her father was 100% Italian and passed away eight years ago. She believes it’s a sign from God that she is going to Rome to meet her prince. I hope she’s not disappointed.
Oh! The shots of Rome are gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. I’ve never been to Rome and I am beyond jealous here. We see the bachelorettes walking the streets and noticing the famous Borghese name on buildings. They are already in love.
Sadie goes shopping to get the best dress possible. Desiree, a 22-year-old realtor from Salt Lake City, says she is going to “kiss that cute little frog.” I am either going to love her or hate her. Claudia, a 22-year-old restaurateur, is excited just to meet Lorenzo, but she could handle being Princess Claudia. Rosella’s tells us that her parents fell in love in Italy and she would love to follow in their footsteps.
Lorenzo pulls up in a limo to the 16th century castle where his royal ancestors lived for hundreds of year. Now it will be the temporary home to another Borghese. Chris and Lorenzo sit down for a chit-chat. Lorenzo explains that he became royalty when his ancestor, Pope Paul, handed out titles to his family. He believes his family is very normal and they don’t focus on the royalty thing. Lorenzo is doing The Bachelor because he wants what all Americans dream of, a family and a house.
Before Lorenzo gets to meet the woman, Chris explains that Lorenzo will have to eliminate more than half of them tonight! Lorenzo is very nervous.
The first lady to meet our bachelor is Lisa, a 25-year-old marketing manager from Portland. She and Lorenzo have a very quick but adorable introduction. They are both so nervous. Next is April, a 25-year-old model from Chicago. Then he meets Kim who asks him if he’s nervous. Jeanette tells Lorenzo that he looks handsome and beautiful. Next he meets Jessica, a 25-year-old assistant buyer from Charlotte who says it’s her first time to Rome and tells Lorenzo she is looking for a tour guide. Hint, Hint.
Then he meets Jami, and Lorenzo tells her that he loves Texas people. I might be falling in love myself. Jami gives a dramatic sigh when the exchange is over. Claudia, a 22-year-old restaurateur from Boca Raton, points out that her dress matches his tie and Lorenzo says he loves the name Claudia. Next up is Brit, a 28-year-old beer chemist from Columbus. Lorenzo does a little shameless flirting while complimenting her dress.
Then he meets Rita, a 29-year-old policy advisor from Richmond, and Lorenzo compliments her smile. When he meets Laura, a 29-year-old dolphin trainer from San Diego, he says that her dress matches her eyes. Rosella strides up speaking Italian to Lorenzo. She is going to work that Italian angle. Meri, a 27-year-old attorney from Biloxi, tells Lorenzo that she went to college at SMU and Lorenzo doesn’t seem impressed.
Gina, a 28-year-old ultrasound technician from Chicago, just says her name, gives him a kiss, and walks away. Heather, a 34-year-old registered nurse from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, says she is so excited and honored. Sarah, a 30-year-old journalist from Nelson, British Columbia, gets complimented by Lorenzo for her necklace, dress, glitter, and everything about her.
Whew! We get a break before we meet the remaining 10 ladies. I cannot wait for the big elimination because I’m not sure I can keep track of everyone.
Lorenzo says it’s a perfect evening for him. Then he meets Jennifer, a 24-year-old teacher from Pembroke Pines, Florida. She says she knows Lorenzo went to college in Florida. He says she does her homework. Was that a teacher joke? Next up is Carissa, a 25-year-old attorney from Cattaraugus, New York. She says she is nervous and it’s her second time in Rome.
Andrea, a 28-year-old hotel concierge from Cincinnati, has a professional-like introduction with Lorenzo. She may need to drop the hotel concierge persona. Desiree, a 22-year-old realtor from Salt Lake City, tells Lorenzo that he is so handsome and gives him a hug and a kiss and calls him “honey.” Next up is Tara, a 25-year-old realtor from St. Augustine, Florida, who seems very sweet and gracious. She is also much cuter in action than her picture on the ABC website.
Oh brother, here comes Erica telling Lorenzo that he is much cuter in person and they have a lot in common. Ellen, a 30-year-old realtor from New Haven, Connecticut, says she can’t wait to get to know Lorenzo more. Elyse, a 27-year-old physician from New York City, is so excited to finally meet Lorenzo that she tells him exactly that two times in a row. She also say she will believe whatever he tells her. Lorenzo jokingly proposes.
Renee, a 30-year-old broadcast marketer from Baltimore, says she came a long way to meet him and wants to stick around for a while. Sadie tells Lorenzo not to be nervous. Then she tells him there’s a problem, there are 24 extra people here! Funny girl.
Chris tells Lorenzo that there is a single rose inside, attached to a pair of 2-karat diamond earrings, and he should give this first rose to a special lady that he would like to spend more time with after tonight. He has all night to get to know the ladies, but when the sun comes up, he has to make his choices for elimination.
Much champagne and chatting ensues. Heather says the prince is to die for. Erica wants to kiss him. Sadie can’t believe it’s really happening. Lorenzo says looking at the ladies is the most beautiful sight he has ever seen in his entire life. He tells the camera there is no better position a man can be in.
Erica tells the camera that some of the girls have tattoos and didn’t go to college, so that puts her in the top three. Oh, I want to rip that tiara off her head. Erica tells Lorenzo that she rode in coach for him. I guess he is supposed to be flattered. Ellen says she got to know more about Erica than Lorenzo and she can’t see a prince walking around New York with Erica. Me neither.
Kim says it’s the most difficult situation she’s ever been in because it’s so competitive. Rosella sold her car to get there. She has total faith that she will be a princess. We see Lorenzo shower extra attention on Rosella. He asks her to speak Italian and she complies. Jennifer says she was surprised to find so many things in common with a prince.
In walks a waiter with the single rose and 2-karat diamond earrings. The woman all fondle the earrings and think they would look great in them. Seeing the rose lights the competitive fire under Desiree. She interrupts Lorenzo’s meeting with Carissa and Jessica to pull him away. She takes him out to the courtyard and does a little Las Vegas dance for Lorenzo and keeps calling him “baby.” I’m so over it.
It’s Lisa turn to pull Lorenzo away. She tells him a little bit about herself. She is a self-professed tree-hugger. They decide to go pick a tree and hug it. It sounds crazy but it is slightly funny and very cute. Lorenzo says it felt sort of good.
Elyse tells Andrea that she hasn’t gotten to talk to Lorenzo yet. Andrea hears this and decides she wants to get noticed. She goes out on the balcony and begins to sing opera down to him in the courtyard. Lorenzo is sitting next to Gina and she puts on the most awful sourpuss face I have ever seen. She purses her lips and looks like she is about to get ghetto. The other ladies don’t enjoy the singing either, but Lorenzo applauds her even if it is a little strange. He says tonight is a fairytale.
Laura has had a little too much to drunk. First, she shouts and “woo”s at the other ladies. She tells Lorenzo she has had many boyfriends and asks Lorenzo why he is still single. She seems to struggle with the conversation. She thinks she has an advantage because she’s older, well educated, beautiful, and has good genetics. She sounds desperate to me.
Sarah asks Lorenzo to sit with him. She barely gets two sentences out when Elyse walks up and tries to sit next to her. Sarah tries to free her dress from under Elyse and it is a terribly awkward moment. Sarah turns back to Lorenzo and asks him if he’s ever dated a black woman or ethnic woman. Elyse walks away while Lorenzo says he has not dated that type of woman. This is his first time being single so he is open to it.
Now Sadie steals him away from the group. They sit in the courtyard and discuss Paris and where Sadie went to college. She says she came a long way to meet Lorenzo and he better be worth it. See, it is actually cute when she says it, unlike Erica, who sounded like a snob when she mentioned riding in coach.
Chris comes out and announces an interesting little twist. Two local Italian women are being added to the competition and now get a chance to meet the bachelor. The American bachelorettes are less than pleased.
Lorenzo says the Italian ladies are gorgeous and he spends some time getting to know them. Although, it is difficult with the language barrier. Their names are Cosetta and Anaysia and that is all we learn about them. Cosetta teaches Lorenzo how to dance. Anaysia admits it made her jealous.
Lisa sees the threat of the Italian beauties and is resolved to not let that happen. She and Erica come to nab Lorenzo away from them. They try to convince him that those goddesses are no good for him because they live so far away. Uh huh. He is not convinced and seems like he wants to got back and talk to them more.
Suddenly, Lorenzo goes to get the single rose and earrings. All the women he walks past are destroyed that they are not the chosen one. He makes a straight line to tree-hugger Lisa. She is overjoyed and says she feels like a princess in the earrings. All the other bachelorettes are hating Lisa right now. Gina makes the sourpuss face again. What is with that?
A rooster’s call announces the dawn of the new day. It is time for Lorenzo to deliberate and select the ladies he wants to move to the next round. All the ladies say that want a rose. Duh.
Chris interviews Lorenzo and reminds him that he has 27 lovely ladies to choose from. Lorenzo admits he is worried about accidentally sending Mrs. Right home. He mentions liking Rosella because she is beautiful and charming. Lorenzo thought Andrea’s singing was a beautiful moment. He thought Desiree was a lot of fun. Lorenzo says Erica was a handful and has a strange quirky personality, but he likes that. No way. The two Italian women are a great twist. He was very excited and knows the other girls were disappointed. Even though, he wasn’t. Now, he goes through the difficult process of making his picks. He wants to make the right decision.
It’s finally time for the rose ceremony. Chris congratulates Lisa for getting the first rose. He wishes the rest of them the best and turns it over to Lorenzo. Lorenzo gives a rose to Kim, and Jeanette. The camera cuts to Gina making the sourpuss face AGAIN. I can’t stand it. The next ones to receive roses are Jami, Ellen, Sarah, and Desiree. Desiree gives him a big “thank you baby.” Then he gives a rose to Jennifer, Gina (are you kidding me?), Erica (NO!), and Sadie. The final rose goes to Anaysia. I am surprised he didn’t pick Rosella.
Now it’s time for the big goodbyes. Rosella is especially shattered and wipes away tears. She still believes she will meet the right man and fall in love someday.
In the clips of upcoming episodes, we see fireworks (literally), helicopters, the Coliseum, champagne toasts, a toga party, mountain views, chariots, roller coasters, grape stomping, wine tasting, beaches, bikinis, shocking revelations, parties, and plenty of Gina’s sourpuss face. Also, one girl is apparently obsessed with Lorenzo and it seems to freak everyone out. Lorenzo even cries about it. Wild. The show closes out with some crazy clips of Erica saying that in her freshman year in college, she paid her roommate to clean her room. Why am I being forced to watch this?
There you have it. We are through the introduction phase and the first big elimination. I am certainly surprised at his choices. Still, I like Lorenzo. He seems like a very down-to-earth guy. Hopefully, next week he gets rid of snobby Erica and “baby” Desiree.
