Cab Complaint They’re a small group having a large impact. About 125 taxi drivers and permit holders created a major blockage at Pearson International Airport Monday disrupting traffic at the terminal and causing havoc on the 401 leading to the terminals. The protestors are angry that limousine licenses are given out only to companies, while taxi plates can be purchased by individuals. They want a level playing field and are expressing their displeasure by holding up cars trying to get into the busy area. All three terminals have been affected. “What they are doing is blocking off the traffic and then opening it up and letting it through and then blocking it off,” explains Connie Turner of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. “So you will see intermittent slowdowns.” Most of the delays last anywhere from 10-25 minutes, and passengers will eventually get through. But they have to pack their patience as well as their tickets. And many are worried they’ll miss their flights. Some have abandoned their cars and are running to make their planes on foot. “They have the right to do it, but I don't know if there is a better way so then they don't interfere with other people,” comments Antonio Gomez as he sits in an unending line of cars. “You know, they should find another way to do it instead of causing all this trouble.” Al Van is far less diplomatic. “It's a disaster. Disaster!” he rails. “They ought to kick butt with them guys!” Turner sympathizes but warns there’s not much they can do. “They have a legal right to protest,” she agrees. “Give yourself extra time. It is not that they are not getting through. It is just much slower than normal.” All the roads leading to the airport are backing up as a result of the backlog, meaning even those who aren’t flying out won’t be going anywhere fast. Protesting drivers promised Tuesday would also see pickets at the airport sometime between 12 and 8 p.m., but would not specify the exact time.
