September 6 – It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp
Rock Star: Supernova, September 6 – It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp by Jenn Brasler -- 09/07/2006 How many products has Rock Star: Supernova pimped this season? There’s only one week left, but there’s still plenty of time to pimp some more. At least this time one of the overhyped products is a prize for one singer. Is Toby the lucky one, or will he be on his way out the door? There’s just one week left until the finale. We’re down to the final five. I wonder how many times they’ll tell us that tonight? Brooke says the votes were “literally” double last season’s and too close to call. Hi, Supernova. Tommy is tired because he just got in from the Mötley Crüe/Aerosmith tour. He’s looking forward to Supernova’s tour now. Hi, Dave. He becomes the first person on the show to acknowledge Brooke’s pregnancy. She jokes that she wasn’t sure how long she could hide the bump. It’s a girl, which will be her third. Dave and Tommy are happy about that. Brooke recaps last night for us. Dilana did “Supersoul,” her original that slammed the fans. Magni’s original was “When the Time Comes,” which was called hot. Storm’s was “What the What is Ladylike” and it was awesome. Lukas’ was “Headspin,” about his mother. But Toby’s original, “Throw it Away,” was by far the audience favorite and received raves from the judges. Dave says last night’s show was one of the best ever, thanks to the originals. Lukas, who finally has his bangs out of his face, says that he’s used to playing for empty bottles and ashtrays. He got to share part of his life and he loves that. Toby says that the whole point of the show was to play his original music and Supernova’s, and now that he’s done both, he’s a “happy little camper.” Dave asks if he made a conscious shift or got more comfortable. Toby attributes his success to “evs.” Some girls have it written on their hands. Toby tells them to get back to him in ten years. Hee. They’re so bummed. Toby says he was thinking too much, so then he thought “evs” and decided to just do what he felt like doing. He’s still here, which proved that that was the right move, and he can’t believe people are clapping for him. Dave throws it over to Jason to tell us who’s performing with Supernova tonight. Jason says they’ve shared the stage with a lot of singers, and tonight they’ll get another look and another song, “It’s All Love.” Sharing the love will be Magni. Hey, I actually called that right! I’m very surprised at myself. The song isn’t as hard as the other stuff we’ve heard from Supernova. Magni’s vocal range is really tested, but he passes with flying colors. The lyrics are kind of cheesy, but the music helps make up for it. Am I crazy or did they sample “Hollaback Girl”? Also, like some of the originals last night, this song is more memorable than the other Supernova songs we’ve heard so far. Magni doesn’t fit as well with the band as the other sings have shown they have, but he’s still great. Brooke notes that the final five are already rock star. In fact, they came to the theater tonight in Honda Element SCs. Ugh, I feel dirty. They got to walk a red carpet, too. Brooke says that whoever Supernova chooses to sing the encore tonight will get to keep his or her car. Jason will give us the name of that singer after some commercials. Of course. After the break, Brooke talks some more. Gilby tells us that someone special will be joining the Supernova tour – Dave and Panic Channel. Cool. Finally, everyone shuts up so Jason can tell us that the encore/car-winning singer is Toby. Yay, Toby! First, he takes a moment to dedicate his performance to the late, great Steve Irwin. Awww. I love Toby. He sings “Throw it Away” again (of course). It’s still high-energy and full of passion. Some girl in the audience tries to maul him at the end. Toby happily accepts his car keys as well. Not everyone can win a car, however - someone has to go home. Instead of listing the early bottom three, Brooke calls out all five singers, telling them they were all in the bottom three at some point. After a break, Brooke tells us that the first singer in the bottom three is… Storm. She doesn’t look surprised. The audience boos and Storm asks, “Don’t you want to hear me sing?” Always, chick. She tells us she’ll be singing Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” It starts out stripped down, only accompanied by a guitar, then picks up with the rest of the band, though still pretty subdued. Though Storm doesn’t stray far from the mic stand, she shows how to stand by it and still really perform. Jason is totally crying. A very nice performance which Storm dedicates to her mom. Lots of mom issues this year, no? The second rocker in the bottom three is… Dilana. Shocker. She has a pair of crutches all decked out with flowers and black paint. Gilby tells her that last night she gave one of her gutsiest performances ever. Dilana recognizes that she hasn’t done a punk rock song yet, so tonight she’ll do Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me,” which she dedicates to her fans. Because she’s just that desperate. This is sad. What’s also sad is that she’s totally off the beat. She finally gets it back on track and does her one-legged drunk flamingo dance. She keeps screaming. It’s disturbing. She screws up the words. Okay, enough. The third rocker in the bottom three is… not Magni. He’s the first person to make it through to the finals. Good for him; he really deserves it. Between Toby and Lukas, the singer not joining Magni will be… Lukas. Yay, Toby! Lukas says that it had to happen sometime. Everyone’s been doing their best and he just has to do his thing. He announces that he’ll be doing “Headspin” again, and once more dedicating it to his mother. It’s basically the same as last night, just with fewer bangs in the eyes. After Toby’s encore, I just find this dull. I wanna hear Toby again! Gilby addresses Storm first, telling her that he liked she changed things up last night. They asked her to bring something different and she did. However, she’s been in the bottom three a few times, and that’s not good. Dilana has been the one to watch in the competition, but she’s still in the bottom three. Lukas is a bottom three newbie, and tonight is his night… to go sit down with Magni and Toby. So who will be the fourth person in the finale? Tommyhawk will tell us. Well, maybe not – he loves Storm and Dilana too much to tell them which is going, so he hands the job over to Jason. Jason tells Dilana and Storm that they’re both great performers and they really respect them as “comrades in rock.” However, the nature of the beast is that someone has to go. Unfortunately, that person is Storm. Awwwww. I’m going to miss her. She needs to release an album, like, now. Storm handles the news with a smile and a bow. Dave says that he chose Storm to rock with last night because he saw what she has and respects her. He repeats that he loved her cover last night (he might very well have meant her original) and hopes to rock it in his car. Storm tells him he’ll be playing on it, and the other members of Supernova offer to play as well. Storm says it’ll be Rock Star: Stormnova. Dave says that though she hasn’t won, they’ve won the chance to back her up. Storm thanks the audience for bringing so much energy and the fans at home for voting. She calls her fellow singers “freaks” and her family. She promises that we’ll see her again, and I don’t doubt it. Dave tells her they love her and she tells him the same. She gets a standing ovation from the audience (well… they don’t have chairs) and the judges. That leaves us with Magni, Toby, Lukas, and Dilana in the final four. If you want to see one of the eliminated singers back on stage next week, vote for someone to do an encore. I’m guessing it’ll be Storm. Next Tuesday, our final four will perform and there will be one last vote before the winner is announced on Wednesday. Who will it be? I have no idea. Right now I’m leaning towards Toby, but I’m in no way an expert on this, so don’t take my word for it. Post-show comments: Dilana says that surviving tonight and ending up in the finale is an amazing feeling. She’s proud to be the last woman standing, though it’s hard to lose Storm. She has faith in the universe that Storm will be back “larger than large.” Lukas says that this was his first time having to defend himself in the bottom three. He’s confident that he can win this and wouldn’t be here if he weren’t. However, there’s a lot of talent here and anything could happen. http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=4&article=article6422.art&page=1
