September 13 - You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Finale) Rock Star: Supernova, September 13 - You Can’t Always Get What You Want
by Jenn Brasler -- 09/14/2006
We’re down to the final four singers, all talented individuals with strong fan bases. No matter who wins, someone’s fans will be disappointed. Will the lucky rocker be Magni, Toby, Dilana, or Lukas?
So here we are, beginning the finale of Rock Star: Supernova. In the next hour, the new lead singer of the band will be named. By the way, a judge just announced that Supernova is going to have to find a new name. Nice timing. Hi, soon-to-be-renamed-band. Hi, Dave. Brooke (and in case you were wondering, they make leather maternity clothes) gives us a mini recap of last night. Ryan got to perform an encore, and he also got a car. Toby sang “Karma Police.” Lukas sang “Fix You.” Dilana sang “Roxanne” with backup from the guys. Magni sang “Hush.”
Dave says that this has been a great summer. All four remaining singers are great and Supernova can’t lose with whoever they pick. Brooke explains what will happen: she has the names of the bottom two. They’ll both perform and one will be booted. The remaining three will perform again and Supernova will pick their man or woman. Brooke claims that last night’s voting broke records and was as close as usual. She calls out Magni, Toby, and Lukas as the three singers who wound up at the bottom. Apparently all has been forgiven with Dilana because she has nothing to worry about right now.
Brooke announces that the first singer in the bottom two is… Magni. He’s going to do “Fire” again, which is a great idea. It’s awesome, as always. I don’t know what else to say. I mean, it’s Magni. It’s good.
The other singer in the bottom two is… Toby. Dang it! He’s doing “White Wedding” again. Yay! If he’s nervous about being in the bottom two and being so close to the end of the season, he’s not showing it. Once he’s done, Supernova starts deliberating on the first elimination of the night. Well, this sucks. Whichever one of them goes, I’m going to be disappointed.
Gilby tells us that this was a hard decision to make. They’ve watched all four contestants grow and do a lot of great stuff, and they’ve contributed a lot to the show. But of course, the point of the show is to get rid of the people who aren’t right for the band. Gilby tells Magni that though they find him talented and see him fitting in well with the band, they’re not sure if he fronts it or fits in with it. Therefore, Magni is the next to go. Awww. Dave says he’s been probably the most consistent singer (I agree) and has never said anything negative. Magni thanks everyone who voted for him, plus his family and the house band (which he wants to join). This was probably the best summer of his life. He thanks the other singers as well and calls out, “See you later!” Well, we’d better. Jason says he’s heading off to be the king of Iceland.
Lukas and Dilana join Toby and Brooke on stage so the audience can applaud the final three. Brooke calls Lukas forward, telling him this is his last chance to make his case to Supernova. Time for the reality-TV clip package! As we hear him singing “Creep,” he talks about it not being an option to come in second or third. He’s ready to win and the best is yet to come. As far as clip packages go, that one was pretty lame. I don’t think it was even a minute long. Dave says Lukas has shown diversity and he wishes him the best. Lukas knows that with all of the success Jason, Gilby, and Tommy have had, they could have been mean and egocentric. Instead, they’re great, and he’d be honored to lead them on a world tour.
Dilana’s clip package has her saying that it’s anyone’s game now as we hear her singing “Time After Time.” She says you have to fight for anything you want. Supernova needs her. Dave wishes her the best of luck. She’s shown herself to be a fighter, and she’s an incredible performer and singer. Dilana says the band needs someone who’s 1,000 percent dedicated to representing “great guys and great music.” She wants to rock the world with them. Lukas is amazing and Toby is incredible, but she’s the one. Toby just laughs, because what can you do?
Speaking of Toby, we hear him singing “Karma Police” as he talks about how this has been the best experience of his life. He’s kept his eyes on the prize. He has a great chance of winning. Dave tells him that he’s grown into a great performer. Toby thanks Supernova for their advice and encouragement; he respects them a lot and feels like he’s ready now. The energy he’s brought to this stage wouldn’t compare to what he’ll bring to the tour (after drinking a little). “Also, I’m tallest,” he adds. Hee.
Tommy says that they have the best of the best in front of them, but they’re going to need to hear all of the singers again. During commercials, we see that CBS has apparently already gotten the rights to “Headspin” because they’re using it in an ad for Survivor. Oh, Lukas. Selling out already? He’s up first, singing “Bittersweet Symphony.” He spends the whole performance growling and posing. I’m so tired, y’all.
Dilana is next with “Zombie.” I think she should have done “Lithium,” since that was her very first performance and the first time we got to see how talented she is. But this one is good, too. Still, there’s not much left to say. You’ve seen one Dilana performance, you’ve seen ‘em all.
Toby has chosen to go with “Somebody Told Me.” He gets the audience to sing along, then sings directly to a camera. He’s very bouncy tonight. Maybe he drank coffee instead of beer before the show. In the background, the house band looks to be having a great time. I hope they get some sort of deal out of this show. Brooke reminds us that our final three are Toby, Dilana, and Lukas. The decision about who goes home next is up to Supernova. Um, as usual.
Brooke notes that Tommy’s drums are up on the stage, so things are getting interesting. Jason babbles about opportunities and being heroes and stuff like that. He tells Toby that his vocal ability has never been in question; he has a great range and is always louder than the instruments backing him. Each of his performances has been great, but he’s the next to go. Well, way to sugarcoat it, Jason. Who let him do that? Poor Toby. I really wanted him to win. Everyone boos and Toby tries to hush them. Dilana is upset, too. Dave says that he’s loved watching Toby grow and he wishes him the best. He already has a hit song, so it’s all good. Toby thanks Supernova and thinks it’s awesome that he came in third to Dilana and Lukas; he thinks Supernova has made a good choice. He wishes them the best and warns everyone that they should look out for whoever wins. He also feels privileged to have gotten to hang out with Supernova.
We’re down to the “edgy ones,” as Dave says. He thinks they look like they’re about to perform a goth wedding. Hee. The audience cheers the final two. Brooke says that last night Dilana and Lukas had the highest number of votes. Yeah, we figured that out when Toby and Magni were in the bottom two. Gilby is asked for the final decision, but it’s only 8:40, so we have to stall a little longer. He throws it back to commercial first. Whatever.
When we come back from commercials, it’s 8:44. Are they going to drag this out for 15 minutes? Tommy tells Lukas that his look and energy and vocals have all been amazing. He tells Dilana that she’s enchanting. He wonders who doesn’t love them. Tommy apparently does not read my recaps. He asks the fans for their picks, then says that they have to listen to the fans. The person they’ve chosen had the highest number of votes last night. Lukas… is the winner. Color me not at all surprised. He gets a big hug from Dilana as the other members of Supernova give each other self-congratulatory handshakes.
Dave adores Dilana, who is a phenomenal singer and performer. He asks her to play with the house band on the tour. Gilby adds that after that, if she wants to make a record, he’ll help her write and produce. That gets her more excited than the offer to play with the house band. Dave offers to play on the record, as does Tommy. These guys are going to be busy. I hope they stick with their promise to Storm, too. Dilana says that she promises to make this CD with the guys, and it’ll be great. She tells Lukas to be awesome, too.
So let the rock star ego trip begin. Dave announces that he needs to be entertained, so the now-complete Supernova heads up on stage, where Tommy mauls Lukas and I wait for them to start making out. Brooke asks Lukas how this feels. Lukas says it feels “just like this,” and they perform “Be Yourself and Five Other Clichés.” I miss Toby. It’s okay, but I still don’t like Lukas’ voice. I think he’ll do well with the band, though. He’s undeniably talented and versatile, and I think he’ll be able to handle the pressures and ups and downs of life on the road, even with Supernova. His voice aside, he blends well with them. As Storm said, they’re looking for a fourth band member, not just a front man, and I think Lukas will be able to fit that role.
Anyway, there are still a few minutes left after the performance, so Brooke pimps the tour again. Apparently they’re going to do the show again next summer, and Brooke encourages people to go to the website for information on trying out. For the next song, “It’s All Love,” Lukas invites Magni out on stage to play guitar. Poor Magni, just getting to play guitar on the song he originally got to sing with Supernova. Of course, this is better than nothing, so he’s probably not that disappointed. Eventually the producers get bored and start running the credits, then just fade out. How kind.
Instead of post-show interviews, we get more of “It’s All Love.” Sorry, Toby, Magni, and Dilana. It’s all about Lukas now.

Lukas Rossi Wins
This season of "Rock Star" has been one wild ride. Despite the many challenges for the talented Rockers who gave so much to this competition, in the end, it was lots of fun. Through it all, the final four met those challenges fearlessly, bringing extra intensity, charisma and rocking chops to the house. Supernova, for sure, had one tough decision to make.
But before we get to that decision, there were the bottom two. With only four Rockers left, this week's elimination consisted of a bottom two instead of three, and Brooke wasted no time announcing who they were. Lukas, Magni and Toby were all at risk at one point last night, but two would find themselves in danger of elimination.
First was Magni. To save himself, Magni chose Jimi Hendrix's "Fire," reprising one of his most celebrated performances of the competition. Would it be enough to save him from the axe?
Toby was next, taking his precarious position in stride. Singing Billy Idol's "White Wedding," the hunky Aussie showcased his strong voice and infectious energy. The girls loved Toby, but would the love extend to Supernova?
After some deliberation, Supernova quickly came back with their verdict. Sadly, Magni was sent home. The Rocker took his exit with charm, class and grace. And that's not surprising. Magni is, as Tommy said, "Magni-ficent."
And so it was down to three. After showing a retrospective of each Rocker's journey, Toby, Lukas and Dilana told Supernova why they were the best Rocker for the job. Tommy answered with, "You three are amazing. But we need to hear for ourselves."
Lukas was first, reprising his performance of The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" with passion and intensity. He was absolutely electric.
Dilana followed with The Cranberries' "Zombie," proving once again that despite some brief personal stumbles, she was still on top of things.
Toby closed out the final three with The Killers' "Somebody Told Me"--a song he'd received the encore for earlier in the game, and one that nicely matched his voice and style. But would it be the match for Supernova?
Regrettably for Toby, the answer was no. Citing his vocal aptitude and how much fun he put in the music, all of Supernova was certain that the popular Aussie's future would be bright. The Rocker bid a gracious farewell by lauding his two remaining comrades and underscoring how much he'd gratefully learned from Supernova. It was all very heartfelt, touching and, yes, "EVS."
As Dilana and Lukas stood huddled together, awaiting the final, life-altering decision, Tommy was visibly stressed. To Lukas he said "Your look, your energy, your vocals, the way you move, everything's been really amazing for us." He then turned to Dilana and stated, "You are enchanting, and your voice is unbelievable. Who doesn't love you? Who doesn't love both of you guys?
But Supernova could only choose one. And who would that be? Tommy made the announcement: "Lukas, you're our boy." Dilana, though undoubtedly disappointed, thanked each member of Supernova saying, "I love and respect all of you." A standout during these many weeks, there was no doubt in Dave and Supernova's minds that Dilana would find major success.
Now it was Lukas' time to shine as the newly-crowned frontman. Singing "Be Yourself," Supernova wowed the crowd. Lukas' natural chemistry with the band shined through in a tour de force performance. The world better get ready.
