Recap, Episode 9: Grindelwald to Montreaux to Singapore After another first place finish, twins Derek & Drew left the Pit Stop in Grindelwald, Switzerland at 4:55am. The pair learned that they needed to travel to the gletscherschluct, a nearby glacier gorge. Deep within the gorge, they could find a key to open a car containing their next clue. Teaming up with Flo & Zach, the brothers had four hours to wait until the gletscherschluct opened in the morning. The two Teams decided to get a hotel room to rest and relax. After departing in last place, a very surprised John Vito & Jill discovered they were the first to arrive at the lodge adjacent to the gorge. Brothers Ken & Gerard and married couple Teri & Ian soon joined John Vito & Jill at the lodge as all three Teams waited until the 9am opening of the gorge.
With John Vito & Jill leading the way, the five Teams made their way into the gletscherschluct, walking through the deep chasm carved by the raging river in search of the keys to open their cars. Zach spotted the keys first, tipping off Flo, and the others soon followed the pair. After running out of the gorge, Teams raced to their Mercedes cars and their next clue. They discovered they needed to drive themselves 36 miles to the town of Kandersteg, load their cars onto a train taking them through the Alps to an adventure park where their next clue waited.
THE BIG CHEESE
After a last-place finish in the previous leg, John Vito & Jill decided to use their Fast Forward to avoid placing last again. John Vito remarked, "We figured it would be better to be safe than sorry. We came in last in the last leg. That would have been terrible to get eliminated and not have used our Fast Forward." To win the Fast Forward, the pair had to find a traditional cheese-making cabin in the Swiss Alps. Once there, they had to eat their way through a wheel of cheese sliced in cubes. They needed to eat as many cubes as necessary to completely reveal the Fast Forward clue hidden underneath.
As they made their way to the cabin, Jill quipped, "I hope it's good cheese. What if it's smelly cheese? What if it smells like feet?" John Vito groaned at the unappetizing prospect. When the pair from New York entered the cabin, they found their giant wheel of cheese, sliced up, waiting to be eaten. John Vito said, "Are you kidding me? I can't eat all this cheese." Jill responded, "We'll have to try." They each took a cube and began eating. John Vito again protested, suggesting that they ditch the Fast Forward and catch up with the other Teams. The couple from New York opted to keep eating the cheese and caught a break when they quickly uncovered a piece of the Fast Forward clue. After a few more minutes of eating cheese and chugging water to wash it down, John Vito and Jill won the Fast Forward. Their clue instructed them to drive fifty-four miles to the city of Montreaux. Once there, they had to use a paddleboat to reach the Pit Stop on the Steamship Savoie floating on Lake Geneva.
THE BIG JUMP
As John Vito & Jill ate their way to a Fast Forward, the other four Teams made their way onto the car train at Kandersteg. Teri & Ian asked a pair of locals about their next destination at the adventure park. The married couple learned that they would most likely bungee jump off of a bridge. After telling this to Ken & Gerard, Ian gleefully told Flo, remembering her difficulty with heights at the Cabo da Roca in Portugal. After leaving Zach in his car during the train ride, Flo joined Drew in the twins' car, where she expressed her fear about jumping. She pondered, "What if I got eliminated today because I didn't want to bungee?"
Once off of the car train, twins Derek & Drew took the lead in a caravan of cars. A fight ensued between the twins over Drew's inability to point driver Derek in the correct direction. Derek snapped to Drew, "You have a compass disability, and it's severe!" While Teri & Ian also struggled with directions, the other three Teams found their next clue by a little red bridge spanning a giant gorge. Opening the clue first, Derek & Drew found their next Detour, the choice between "Extreme Swiss" and "Very Swiss." In Extreme Swiss, each Team member had to walk onto the narrow red bridge and take the largest bungee jump in Europe, 620 feet. This task could be completed quickly, but could also be terrifying. In Very Swiss, Teams needed to drive eight miles into the Alps to a farm. Once there, they had to search for one of a handful of keys hidden in the traditional Swiss bells around the necks of 75 goats. The key opened a box holding their next clue. While much less scary, completing this task could take a long time.
While twins Derek & Drew quickly headed for the red bridge, both Ken & Gerard and Flo & Zach decided to drive to the farm in search of the keys. As the four raced to their cars, Ken joked to the twins, "Enjoy it! Don't die!" Derek faced the gorge first. He commented, "You're looking down, and that's the hardest part of the jump." In jumping, Derek hoped to lead the way for Drew to ease his mind. Instead, watching Derek seemed to make Drew more nervous. After making the jump, Derek encouraged his brother, saying, "Drew, just own it. Just come out and own it." After a few seconds of contemplation, Drew took a swan dive off the bridge and completed the Detour.
Meanwhile, at the farm, Ken & Gerard quickly completed their task by finding a goat with one of the keys to their box. Zach followed their lead by finding a key almost as fast. Inside their boxes, Teams found their next clue along with a T Mobile cell phone. Teams needed to drive fifty miles to their next route marker on the banks of Lake Geneva at a well-known building, the Chateau de Chillon. They had the option of making one phone call to their loved ones back home before driving to the chateau. Teams could talk on the phone as long as they wanted, but had to end the call before getting in their cars. An excited Derek called his wife, and both brothers talked to their mother. A tearful Gerard called his wife, asking about his twins. Afterwards, he said, "It was just amazing talking to my wife. God, I miss them." Zach called his sister, concerned about a missed credit card bill, while Flo talked to her best friend. As the two Teams left the farm, Teri & Ian arrived, having lost valuable time searching for the Detour. The couple had a bit of a struggle to corner a goat to get a key, but Teri successfully tore one off a bell. Teri rushed to call her sister and her two sons, joyfully inquiring how they were doing. After Ian said a quick hello, the pair got off the phone and headed to the chateau now in last place.
As the four Teams drove to Lake Geneva and their next clue, John Vito & Jill paddled their way to the Steamship Savoie where Phil waited for them. John Vito quipped, "Last to first. Let me hear it, Phil." Phil confirmed that the pair indeed placed first and won a seven-night Royal Caribbean vacation.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
Brothers Ken & Gerard reached the chateau first and encountered a Roadblock. One Team member needed to assemble a Swiss Army bicycle from a pile of parts using an identical bike as a reference. Once an expert confirmed that the bike has been assembled properly, Teams received their next clue. Gerard began assembling his bike and was soon followed by Drew. Derek became increasingly frustrated watching his brother struggle with the bike. After a few unsuccessful attempts, Gerard got his bike approved by the expert and received the next clue instructing them to use the two bikes (the one assembled and the reference) to pedal three miles through town to the Bassett Marina. Once there, they would have to abandon their bikes and use a paddleboat to reach the Pit Stop at the Steamship Savoie.
As Drew continued to struggle, Zach began putting the bicycle together, also finding difficulties. Soon, Ian joined the pair, with Teri commenting on the task, "It pays to have kids." Ken & Gerard made their way to the marina as Drew finished the Roadblock and raced to catch the brothers. When Flo told Zach that Ian was having problems with the brakes, Zach asked, "The brakes? Where the hell are the brakes?" With his skills as a parent, Ian finished the Roadblock before Zach and set out for the Pit Stop. As Zach continued his construction woes, Ken & Gerard jumped on the finish mat in second place, soon followed by Derek & Drew in third place.
A LUCKY BREAK
Zach finally completed the Road Block, still in last place, but hoping to overtake Teri & Ian on the bike ride through town. Flo yelled at Zach as he unzipped his pants into shorts, wasting precious seconds. Flo continued to shout while the pair biked, saying, "We lost. We lost this entire race!" Zach tried to encourage Flo positively, to no avail. Meanwhile, Teri encountered a minor hurdle when she fell off her bike after hitting a curb. After making sure she was not injured, Ian told Teri to get back on the bike. The married couple reached the marina ahead of Flo & Zach and began the paddle to the ship. Flo & Zach soon arrived, but Flo became convinced that they couldn't overtake the pair. Trying to encourage her, Zach said, "I suggest you put all that desire into these pedals right now." Flo began crying about their impending loss, saying, "It's humiliating. We got beaten out by two retired people." Meanwhile, a triumphant Ian shouted, "We're coming Phil!" as they boarded the boat to finish in fourth place. When boarding the boat, Flo continued crying, saying, "I don't want to go home." As expected, Phil informed the pair they finished in last place. They received a shock when he added that this was the second non-elimination round. Flo jumped into Zach's arms, her tears turning to shouts of joy. On her behavior, she commented, "What I did wrong was that I just gave up. I was so lucky to have Zach."
CRUNCH TIME
After taking the lead for the first time, John Vito & Jill left the Pit Stop aboard the Steamship Savoie at 12:42am. Opening their clue, the pair discovered they needed to travel over 50 miles to Geneva to find the tallest water fountain in Europe, the 450-foot tall Jet d'Eau. At the base of the fountain, they would find their next clue. On their lead, Jill commented, "This race is unbelievable. It's just stressful trying to stay in front and trying to always guess right and make the right decisions."
Departing second at 2am, brothers Ken & Gerard found a cab to take them to the fountain. On their success so far, Gerard said, "We didn't think we'd make it this far. We're old and we're not in the best of shape, but we're going to blow them out of the water!"
Leaving in third place, twins Derek & Drew remembered that this was their birthday and hoped for a good day. Teri & Ian left the Pit Stop twenty minutes later, trying to move their way up again. On their way of communicating with each other, Ian remarked, "Nobody's a pushover in this relationship. I don't think I'm the only motivator. Teri motivates me."
Feeling the pressure, Flo & Zach departed last, six minutes behind Teri & Ian. On their current position, Zach said, "It's not a good feeling at all to be in last place for the first time during the race." After asking where the Jet d'Eau was, Zach suggested taking a train to Geneva until Flo pointed out they were already in last place and "almost dead." Like the other Teams, they took a cab.
SMILE AND SAY CHEESE
At the Jet d'Eau, John Vito & Jill found their next clue instructing them to travel to the front of the Petronas Towers in the country of the flag enclosed. Teams discovered they held the flag of Malaysia and needed to fly 7000 miles to the city of Kuala Lumpur to find the largest buildings in Asia, the Petronas Towers. After a reprieve for several legs, everyone found themselves back in the airport jockeying for flights. Teri & Ian caught an early break by booking a 7:50am flight to Kuala Lumpur, jumping ahead of the other four Teams who all took a 9am flight. In a repeat of the car train through Switzerland, Flo spent the entire flight to Malaysia sitting with Drew, while Zach sat by himself. Zach commented, "It definitely was a little bit strange because there was some sort of symbolic distance between me and my partner, and another man moving in."
After landing in Kuala Lumpur, Teri & Ian kept their lead as they found the Petronas Towers and their next instructions. They discovered they had to find a local to take their picture in front of the towers, using a Kodak Easyshare Camera. Then they would have to walk a mile through the streets of Kuala Lumpur to the Ampang Park Shopping Center to develop their pictures and find their next clue. After snapping the picture and getting directions to the shopping center, Ian told Teri, "We just gotta be cool now. We got a lead."
Unaware of Teri & Ian's lead, the others took the train to the Petronas Towers. Zach and Jill found the cameras first for their respective Teams and the others followed. Each Team asked locals to take their pictures, then embarked on the walk to Ampang Park Shopping Center. Teri & Ian felt their lead slipping away as they found the Ampang Park Train Station instead of the shopping center. They went up an escalator and discovered the mall, along with the photomat. After quickly processing their Kodak Easyshare camera, they found their clue on the back instructing them to travel 200 miles by train to Singapore. Once there, they would have to make their way to the National Orchid Garden and find the Margaret Thatcher orchid to receive their next clue. Hot on their heels, the other four Teams processed their photos and learned from the store employee that Teri & Ian had just been there.
At the station, all of the Teams caught Teri & Ian as everyone waited for the 11:15am train. Ian said, "So much for being lucky. It's annoying." On the train, Teams had time to consider strategies and gather thoughts before the fast pace continued in Singapore. Gerard simply said, "We're not being eliminated this round." Derek decided the best bet was "to stick with the pack, stay in the middle, and beat everyone in a sprint to the finish."
Departing the train in the early evening, Teams had the night to sleep and relax before the Orchid Gardens opened at 8:30 the following morning. Derek & Drew and Flo & Zach split a room, although Flo complained again about Zach suggesting the YMCA. On the cab to the hotel, Derek joked to Drew about the sleeping arrangements for the night.
SWIM OR SEARCH
In the morning, Teams gathered outside the botanical gardens, waiting for its opening. Jill told John Vito, "We are not going out today." At 8:30am, the gates opened and everyone ran to find the Margaret Thatcher Orchid. Zach & Flo led the way to encounter the next Detour, choosing between "Dry" or "Wet." In Dry, Teams must drive themselves to an apartment on Choa Chu Kang Way where Singapore television's biggest star, Phua Chu Kang, would hand them their next clue. While seemingly easy, all streets in this district are named Choa Chu Kang. Once they found the correct building, Teams would discover that the elevator would not stop on every floor and that apartment numbers flop from wing to wing. In Wet, Teams had to drive to the Singapore Zoo to search for "mermaids." They would realize the mermaids they had to find are manatees, whose round shape inspired sailors to invent the legend of mermaids. Teams then had to put on goggles and wetsuits and swim across the enclosure to find their next clue.
Teri & Ian and Derek & Drew raced to the zoo to swim with manatees, while John Vito & Jill, Flo & Zach, and Ken & Gerard tried to find the apartment. Flo & Zach had no idea where to go and decided to follow Ken & Gerard. Ken tried to lose the pair on the expressway, but could not. As the four ran into the apartment complex, Flo apologized for following the brothers. At apartment #137, Phua Chu Kang greeted the two Teams and handed them their next clue instructing them to drive to Suntec City in downtown Singapore and find the Fountain of Wealth, whose waters, locals believe, bring good luck and fortune. Meanwhile, John Vito & Jill, unable to find the apartment, stopped at a gas station to learn they were headed in the wrong direction.
On the way to the zoo, Derek again shouted at Drew about getting the correct directions off the map. Teri & Ian passed the twins on the expressway and pulled into the zoo first. Showing little modesty, the two Teams donned their wetsuits to take a swim, with the twins reaching the clue first. After asking a local where Suntec City was, Derek & Drew departed the zoo with Drew "hoping the other Detour took awhile." Teri & Ian quickly followed in the race to the fountain.
FOUNTAIN OF WEALTH
In a mini-alliance, Flo realized her map was better than Ken & Gerard's, but the brothers had the better skill at reading it. After Zach declined Gerard's offer to take their map and lead them to the next route marker, Flo offered her map to them so that they could follow to the Fountain of Wealth. She then yelled at Zach for not offering the map to them, asking, "What is wrong with you?" After Zach's unwillingness to share, Gerard said he wouldn't be upset if they "accidentally" lost Flo & Zach along the way.
With the other four Teams having completed the Detour, John Vito & Jill felt the pressure and finally found the apartment and Phua Chu Kang. Still in the hunt, the pair found Suntec City on the map and started their drive to downtown Singapore. Meanwhile, twins Derek & Drew arrived at the fountain in first place. Derek ran through the fountain to grab the next clue in the center. They discovered they needed to drive to the next Pit Stop a top Mount Faber, a peak overlooking Singapore. Soon after, Ken and Zach took a run through the good luck waters for their respective Teams and also headed to the Pit Stop.
Still searching for the fountain, Ian asked a local at a stoplight for directions and he offered to drive them to it. Meanwhile, John Vito & Jill continued to look without any luck. As Teri & Ian left the fountain with clue in hand, John Vito & Jill arrived. The two Teams now battled to avoid elimination. At the same moment, Derek & Drew stepped onto the Pit Stop mat in first place. For their efforts, the twins won a seven-night Royal Caribbean European Cruise to enjoy after the race. After parking their cars, Ken & Gerard beat Flo & Zach in a footrace to the mat to earn a second place finish.
ELIMINATION
Now driving to Mount Faber, Ian commented, " I can't believe there's anybody behind us. Obviously, there's other people that are as bad at directions as we are." To save time, John Vito & Jill paid a local to lead them to the Pit Stop, hoping they could catch Teri & Ian. After parking their car, Teri & Ian ran as fast as they could and stepped onto the mat in fourth place, breathing a sigh of relief.
John Vito & Jill soon followed, arriving in last place. Phil informed the couple from New York they had been eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. On their relationship, Jill said, "Our future now for us is what our future was before this race even began. We plan having children together and grandchildren and getting married, and we're excited and we can't wait to do it." Smiling, John Vito quickly added, "We're going to get married before we have children and grandchildren."
AFTER TAKING LEAD IN GENEVA, JOHN VITO & JILL ELIMINATED IN SINGAPORE
Not wanting to risk elimination, John Vito & Jill used their Fast Forward to win the ninth leg of THE AMAZING RACE, while Flo & Zach caught a break by finishing last in the non-elimination round. Unfortunately, in the tenth leg of the race, John Vito & Jill couldn't navigate through the streets of Singapore fast enough to escape becoming the eighth Team to be eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE.
