Recap, Episode 8: Füssen to Grindelwald
HAY THERE! After taking the lead for the first time in the last leg, friends Flo & Zach departed the Pit Stop at Neuschwanstein Castle in Füssen, Germany at 10:02pm. Upon opening the clue, they learned they needed to drive to the nearby Augustinerhof Farm and search for their next clue buried in a giant haystack. Zach quickly found one of the clues at the very top of the haystack. Flo suggested covering up the pile so the other Teams wouldn't find the clue as easily. The clue instructed the pair to travel to the town of Freidrichshafen where a ferry would take them to Switzerland. From there, they would take a train to Schauffhausen and find a route marker perched on a rock in the middle of the Rheinfall, Europe's largest waterfall. As Flo & Zach made their way to the ferry, Derek & Drew and dating couple John Vito & Jill departed for the haystack at the Augustinerhof Farm. On how other Teams perceive them, John Vito said, "The other Teams think that we're the nice Team, but we will do whatever it takes on our part to win." Leaving a few minutes later, Ian commented on his and Teri's performance in the race. "No matter what happens, whether we're eliminated or not, we've shown these young people that people of our age can be very competitive. They've been trying to get rid of us since the beginning of the race and we just keep staying in and keep staying in." John Vito & Jill and Derek & Drew quickly found the clue in the haystack. The two Teams decided to discuss the best route to Freidrichshafen, but wanted to leave the farm before Teri & Ian arrived. As both Teams left the farm, each encountered married parents Teri & Ian, who were searching for the haystack. When Ian asked the twins if they had luck finding the farm, they lied, saying, "We're still looking." When Teri & Ian asked the dating couple from New York, Jill also lied, saying, "We can't find it." As soon as John Vito drove on, Jill quipped, "We are going to hell. We are totally going to hell." Ian soon saw the flag and realized that both Teams lied to him. After a flat tire slowed them down in the last leg, Team "Oh Brother," Ken & Gerard, left the Pit Stop in last place at 2:42am. Gerard made light of their current standing in the race, remarking, "Let me tell you something. Those other Teams better watch it because we're on their butts. We're coming fast. They're gonna go, 'Oh, brother. Here those two come again.'" Flo & Zach made it to the ferry in Freidrichshafen just before 1am. Throughout the night, the other four Teams joined them before the ferry departed at 5:41am. An annoyed Teri retold to Ken & Gerard the story of the twins' and John Vito & Jill's deception at the haystack route marker. Jill told John Vito, "I think they're angry at us." On everyone being together, Zach remarked, "Once again, everyone's equalized. Everyone's bunched up together." JILL TAKES CONTROL The ferry transported Teams to Romanshorn, Switzerland as the sun began rising over the horizon. After the relaxing ride, Teams raced off the ferry, heading for the train station to take them to the Rheinfall. As their one-hour ride came to an end in Schauffhausen, John Vito looked out the window, trying to spot a taxi before exiting the train. Ken & Gerard and Derek & Drew got a jump on the others leaving the train station. John Vito & Jill encountered another round of transportation difficulties as they found a cab with no driver. After asking a local, they went to the other side of the train station and found an available taxi, but the valuable minutes wasted put them in last place. At the Rhinefall, the other four Teams made their way onto a chartered boat to take them out to the rock formation that held their next clue. Gerard and the twins were relieved to learn that John Vito & Jill had a cab problem, giving the others an advantage. As their boat neared the waterfall, Gerard asked the man steering if they could leave their bags aboard while they got the clue. The man said they could leave their belongings and all agreed that there was no reason to bring their heavy backpacks along. At the same time, John Vito & Jill arrived at the Rheinfall and hopped on a boat behind the other Teams. At the island with the route marker, there is room for only one boat at the landing. Jill realized this and asked her guide to wait at the landing with their boat while John Vito climbed up the rock to get the next clue. This meant that the other boat, holding all of the belongings of the other four Teams, would need to wait to pick the others up until John Vito & Jill's boat left. On the situation, Zach said, "The rest of the Teams were standing there facing Jill and that was kind of a weird moment, a little face-off." On the tension, Jill commented, "I think that the other Teams were just pissed that we outfoxed them." For her quick thinking, John Vito & Jill took the lead as their boat headed back to shore. Teams now needed to make their way back to the train station to travel 32 miles to the city of Zurich. Once there, they had to find the historic town square called the Lindenhof and an officer who would direct them to their next clue in an underground vault. On the train ride to Zurich, Flo talked to Ken & Gerard and Ian about her feelings for Zach, as well as a potential interest in Drew. The guys all gently teased her, asking if she liked Drew. Flo just laughed, but didn't answer their queries. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY Once off the train, the Teams scoured the streets of Zurich in search of the Lindenhof. Derek & Drew and Flo & Zach were first to find the officer who handed them their clue, a Detour. In this Detour, Teams had to choose between two ways of obtaining a six-digit code that would open a safe: "Count the Money" or "Run the Numbers." Teams choosing Count the Money had to count the Swiss currency in a bowl next to the safe. The total amount of money corresponded to the code to open the safe. While the process of counting could be painstakingly slow, it could be done next to the safe, possibly saving time. Teams choosing Run the Numbers had to search the streets of Zurich to find three sets of two-digit numbers to open the safe. The first was the number <12> on a metal statue at the corner of a street. The second was the sum total <78> of the numbers on the north face of the clock on St. Peter's Church. The third was the number of trees <50> in the Lindenhof with red ribbons. This code, 127850, would open the safe, giving Teams their next clue. Ken & Gerard decided to count the money in the bowl as the other four Teams took to the streets of Zurich to find the secret code. Derek & Drew and Flo & Zach worked together counting the trees of the Lindenhof, while Teri & Ian counted separately. All Teams had an incorrect answer after the first count. Derek & Drew arrived back at the safe with their answer as Ken & Gerard continued counting the money. Realizing the futility in their choice, the brothers decided to abandon their counting and Run the Numbers with everyone else. The twins, as well as Flo & Zach and John Vito & Jill, all had the incorrect code. Knowing their mistake, they all went back and recounted the trees. John Vito & Jill got the right number the second time and corrected their clock number to successfully open the safe and regain the lead. The couple from New York discovered they needed to travel by train 121 miles to the town of Grindelwald. Once there, they would have to find a field with their next route marker. Following closely behind them, Derek & Drew and Flo & Zach opened their safes as well. Ian & Teri struggled on the streets of Zurich, briefly unable to find the metal statue. Ken & Gerard encountered the same problem as the others in counting the trees. The brothers eventually got the magic number of 50 and opened their safe, leaving Teri & Ian in last place. The married couple had to count the trees yet again and finally opened the safe to get their clue. John Vito & Jill missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead by missing the 11:35am train to Grindelwald. They would have been the only Team on the train. Instead, they had to wait an hour for the next train, which carried all five Teams. Jill, incredibly frustrated, noted, "We would have been an hour ahead of everyone." A SHOT AT SUCCESS Arriving in Grindelwald, Teams traveled by foot to the route marker in a field at the base of the Alps. Derek & Drew opened their clue first to find a Roadblock. One Team member had to relive the story of Swiss folk hero William Tell by using a bow and arrow to shoot an apple off of a child's head. In this case, the "child" was a mannequin. Once they knocked the apple off of the dummy, they got their next clue. At first, Zach and Ian struggled, missing their target altogether. Then, Zach quickly hit the apple and propelled himself and Flo into the lead. They opened the next clue, instructing them to check in at the next Pit Stop at the Chalet Arnika, an iconic Swiss home nestled at the foot of the Alps in Grindelwald. While Flo & Zach excitedly ran off to the Pit Stop, John Vito encountered major difficulties with the bow and arrow. He could not close his eye to shoot right-handed, so he decided to try it left-handed. Meanwhile, Ken managed to hit the apple, followed by Ian, the retired police officer, who said, "I can still shoot." Derek was having his own problems with contact lenses, but also knocked off the apple while John Vito continued trying. Jill gave her partner words of encouragement, saying, "Don't get frustrated." RACE TO THE HEIGHTS Through the steep hills and high altitude, Teams struggled in their walk to the Pit Stop. While John Vito continued his struggle on the archery range, Derek began asking locals for directions to Chalet Arnika. Teri & Ian and the twins caught up to Flo & Zach and Ken & Gerard, as they all canvassed the town of Grindelwald in search of the Pit Stop. John Vito finally hit the apple, and the pair from New York ran from the Roadblock, hoping they had a chance of catching the others. Ian urged Teri to keep up with him. As she wearily said, "Ian", he replied, "You gotta come. This is our chance. Let's eliminate this Team behind us." John Vito & Jill couldn't find anyone who knew where the chalet was and hoped the other Teams had the same problem. Ken & Gerard and Derek & Drew finally received directions from a florist and police officer, respectively, that pointed them the right way. Teri & Ian continued to bicker while walking through the town, but also were heading in the right direction. John Vito & Jill happened to find a cab driver who offered to drive them to the chalet. Ken & Gerard tried to save time by cutting through a field, but ended up getting lost by separating from the other Teams. In a sprint to the flag, Derek & Drew battled Flo & Zach. Derek & Drew captured first place and a pair of Kodak Easyshare Digital Camera. Seconds behind them were Flo & Zach, in second place. For their hustle through Grindelwald, Teri & Ian earned a third place finish. After getting some help from a local, Ken & Gerard discovered the Pit Stop in the distance. At the same time, John Vito & Jill were arriving in their cab. Gerard said to Ken, "Here they come. Quick! We can beat them." John Vito & Jill took off in pursuit of Ken & Gerard and the Pit Stop, but could not make up the ground in time. The brothers arrived in fourth place. John Vito & Jill arrived at the mat in fifth place, where Phil informed the pair that this was the first of three non-elimination rounds. On their last place finish, Jill said, "I almost had a heart attack." TWINS REGAIN LEAD, JOHN VITO & JILL AVOID ELIMINATION Twins/Models Derek & Drew successfully navigated the streets of Grindelwald, Switzerland to earn another first place finish. After struggling at the Roadblock, John Vito & Jill arrived at the Pit Stop, where Phil informed them that though they had arrived in last place, the good news was that this was the first of three non-elimination rounds. But with all Teams separated by only minutes, it's anybody's game, and the pressure is building as the next elimination looms. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race3/show/episode08/ar3story01.shtml
