Recap, Episode 6: The Guidos: "They're Outcasts!"
Tunis Six teams remained in the race. During their mandatory twelve-hour Pit Stop, word of an impending sandstorm made it too dangerous to stay in the Sahara desert. Teams were evacuated to the town of Gabez, where they received their first route marker envelope, which instructed them to head to the Palace Hotel in Tunis. To get there, they had to find their own way by taxi, and there weren't many available in the middle of the night. Kevin & Drew were the first to leave at 2:24 am. About twenty minutes later, Joe & Bill departed. A growing animosity was building between these two Teams. Although the fraternity brothers departed first, Joe & Bill were the first to find a taxi on the nearly empty streets. Behind them, Nancy & Emily began the leg. They were excited about being in third place, and felt they'd surprised a lot of their competitors. Running in the middle were Rob & Brennan, while two Teams, Frank & Margarita and Lenny & Karyn, were nearly tied for dead last. Frank explained that they had taken a wrong turn in the previous leg and were "hoping to recover." Karyn admitted that she and Lenny were "still having our little squabbles," but she felt confident that they would stay in the race. Several hours later, Joe & Bill arrived at the Palace Hotel. They received a route marker that instructed them to make their way to Rome, Italy, and to find the spot marked on an enclosed picture. Team Guido quickly identified the location as the Roman Colosseum and hoped into a taxi to the Tunis airport. One by one, the Teams received the clue and made their way to the airport. The Guidos' Plan Once again, Team Guido was the first to arrive at the airport. They discovered there was a controlled strike in the Rome airport, and no planes were flying directly there. Kevin & Drew showed up right on Joe & Bill's heels. At the ticket counter, Bill spoke clandestinely in French to a ticket agent, referring to "contestants." "Better be careful. You don't want your legs broke," a suspicious Drew warned him. Bill responded, "Don't get so mad at me, I'm doing the work for you." Drew shook his head, "No, you're not." Luck was on Team Guido's side, and they were able to book the last tickets out. The flight would take them to Geneva, then on to Rome once the strike ended. Kevin & Drew couldn't believe it. It appeared they were beaten again. At this point, Nancy & Emily showed up. They worked with Kevin & Drew to find seats, but both Teams were unsuccessful. Lenny & Karyn were the next Team to show up, followed by Frank & Margarita and Rob & Brennan. Under Joe & Bill's watchful eyes, the other Teams struggled for tickets. "It's just like this good luck fairy just follows them everywhere they go," Nancy said as she stared with Emily at the Guidos across the terminal. The mother and daughter Team continued their frantic search for plane tickets. "I just want a ticket out," Nancy groaned. Her wish was granted a few moments later when Kevin charmed a ticket agent into getting his Team as well as Nancy & Emily and Rob & Brennan on a flight. Most exciting for them was the discovery that this flight would arrive in Rome a full three hours before Bill & Joe would land. Meanwhile, Karyn was making friends with employees at Tunis Air. They informed her that the Rome strike would end that afternoon at three o'clock. If it did, Lenny & Karyn would be the only Team with a direct flight into Italy. Karyn asked Lenny if they should take the gamble. Lenny replied that the whole game is about taking risks. "Either we'll be way out ahead or we'll be shot in the foot," Lenny added. Frank & Margarita decided to book a flight to London and then figure out how to get to Rome from there. Three Teams, Kevin & Drew, Rob & Brennan and Nancy & Emily, had ten minutes to get through customs and board their plane. Team Guido, however, decided to interfere. "As we see them come, we're gonna stop," Bill said. "It might just be one or two minutes, so let's hold them up." Team Guido stepped in front of customs, began stalling, and caused problems with airport personnel. Kevin yelled in the midst of the commotion that Joe & Bill had created an "international incident" with their theatrics. However, in the end, Team Guidos' ploy didn't work, and the Teams were all able to get on their flight. Airport Strike Causes Trouble Kevin & Drew, Rob & Brennan and Nancy & Emily were now on their way to Lyon, France. Two hours later, Joe & Bill were off for Zurich to make their connection to Rome. Frank & Margarita took a flight from London to Geneva, where they spent the night in the airport. And Lenny & Karyn boarded the only direct flight and would be the first to arrive in Italy. Unfortunately for Kevin & Drew, Rob & Brennan and Nancy & Emily, they arrived in Lyon to find their flight to Rome was cancelled. So, they decided to fly to Milan, Italy, and then figure out how to get to Rome once they were there. They reckoned that at least they'd be in the right country. In Milan, the Teams discovered that the quickest route to Rome was an overnight train. They boarded it, exhausted and frustrated that their advantage had been taken away by fate and that they might now be the three trailing Teams. Lenny & Karyn First to Eternal City Lenny & Karyn's flight landed in Rome well before any of their competitors. They made their way to the Roman Colosseum in the dead of night. The couple surrounded the fabled icon in search of the clue. "There it is!" Karyn shouted when she spotted the yellow and white route marker flag. The couple ripped open the clue envelope and discovered that the next challenge was a Detour. A Detour is a fork in the road in which Teams are given two distinct tasks or passageways and must select one. In this case, they were given the option of finding "the foot," a well-known Italian monument, or "the hoof," a more obscure statue. Teams were given only a picture of each monument. They had to find out for themselves, in a city bursting with monuments, where these particular two resided. Because neither of the monuments opened until the following morning, Lenny & Karyn felt they had to time to kill. Feeling no pressure, they casually headed toward the monuments. The only other Team to arrive at night was Team Guido. Team Guido arrived at the Colosseum, quickly surmised there was nothing for them to accomplish until the following morning, and checked themselves into a hotel. Early the next morning, the remaining Teams arrived in Rome. They headed to the Roman Colosseum, grabbed the Detour envelope and instructed their taxi drivers to take them to the hoof location. It didn't open until ten in the morning, and it appeared that all the Teams would get there in time. Follow the Yellow Brick Stones The Hoof and the Foot There was noticeable tension between Joe & Bill and the rest of the Teams as they waited for the Detour location to open. "Don't even think about saying good morning," Drew snapped at the Guidos as they walked by. Joe & Bill passed the other Teams and sat on their own, totally nonchalant. "They're not focused on the race. They're focused on us," Bill explained. While the Teams waited for the Hoof to open, Lenny & Karyn wandered off and encountered the Foot detour option. Since it was already open, they decided to perform this task with the hope of gaining a lead on their competitors. They walked in, picked up a route marker envelope, and read that their next task was to race by train to Castelfranco Emelia, located hundreds of miles away. Once there, they were expected to find the Pagani Auto Factory. As Lenny & Karyn rushed off to find a taxi, the gate of the hoof location was just lowering. Once it opened, Teams headed up the concrete steps and picked up their envelopes guiding them to Castelfranco and the Pagani Auto Factory. The Teams raced down the stairs and hurriedly spotted taxis to take them to the train station. Kevin & Drew were the first to arrive and hop aboard a train. They were closely followed by most of the other Teams. Lenny & Karyn, however, missed the train due to technical production difficulties beyond their control. They received a time benefit at the end of the leg to compensate for any time lost as a result. During a stop in the town of Bologna, Team Guido and Frank & Margarita misinterpreted the clue, got off the train, and took taxis to the auto factory. They honestly believed they weren't violating the rules. The Teams that remained on the train, however, felt those Teams should be penalized. In the end, they were given a time penalty that would require them to remain at the Pit Stop at the end of the leg longer than the other teams. They had misinterpreted the clue, albeit with honest intentions, as the footage showed. The three Teams that remained on the train--Kevin & Drew, Nancy & Emily and Rob & Brennan--arrived at the small town of Castelfranco to find that the entire region only had two taxis. Since there were three Teams, one of them was going to have to wait. Nancy & Emily immediately volunteered to hang back. The other Teams hopped in the available taxis with the promise that they'd send one back as soon as possible. Driving Smart Frank & Margarita arrived at the Pagani Auto Factory first. "This is a sports car design studio," Margarita realized. They arrived at the leg's Roadblock challenge. A Roadblock is a task that only one member of the Team can perform. The Team must determine who will do the challenge before knowing the entire details. This Roadblock involved driving to the next Pit Stop, located in a small village just ten miles away. To get there, the Teams were provided with a map. Making one's way through a maze of small country roads promised to be difficult. Frank decided to perform the Roadblock. He walked out of the factory to discover he was not going to be driving some exotic sports car, but would instead be behind the wheel of a tiny Italian economy car, called a Smart Car. In turn, Margarita would get a free ride in a tricked-out Pagani roadster. Cleverly, Frank hired his taxi driver to lead him directly to the village. His intention was to follow behind in his vehicle. As he headed down the rustic Italian roads, he joked, "I'm driving a swatch watch. I can ride my bike faster than this." His speed, however, was fast enough, because he arrived at the Pit Stop in first place. The next driver, Joe, was right on Frank's tail. In the middle were Rob & Brennan and Kevin & Drew. "I'm not good with the map stuff, Kev," Drew said as he struggled to fit in the tiny Italian car. Running behind were Emily & Nancy and Lenny & Karyn. For the first time in the race, Nancy volunteered to do a Roadblock. Behind her, Karyn hoped in her own Smart Car. One by one, the Teams trickled into the scenic Italian town. Eventually, Lenny & Karyn were the last to step on the mat. They were told by host Phil Kheogan, however, that this was not an elimination round. Even though they were in last place, they would survive another leg. In the end, though, all thoughts were on Team Guido. Most of the other Teams condemned their attitude at the Tunis airport. In their defense, Joe & Bill felt that they were playing by the rules and their competitors would do better focusing on themselves and the race rather than on what Team Guido happened to be doing. Will tensions escalate between these competitors? And who will be the next Team eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE? http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/show/week06/story01.shtml
