Recap, Episode 6: Mumbai (Bombay), IndiaDeparting in first place from the Kasteel Muiderslot in Muiden, Netherlands at 2:25 am, an excited Millie cheered as she and Chuck learned they would be traveling 4700 miles to Mumbai, India, formerly known as Bombay. Once there, they would make their way to Gate 1 at Film City, also known as "Bollywood." On their relationship, Chuck commented, "I think that Millie and I both get overly frantic in a tough situation. We're just super competitive. Some times I don't trust her, and a lot of times, she doesn't trust me. Trust is very important when it comes to commitment."
Departing 50 minutes later, circus clowns Jon & Al met up with their friends Millie & Chuck at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, where the ticket counters remained closed. However, the foursome was aware of a KLM direct flight to Mumbai departing at 10:25 am. On his Team's determination, Jon commented, "We've worked together for many years in the circus and we are just from the old school. No matter how you feel, no matter how hard the work is, you just push forward and you do it."
Leaving the Pit Stop at 3:34 am, engaged couple Kelly & Jon made their way to the airport. On Kelly's performance in the Race thus far, Jon said, "She's finally starting to settle down and not get stressed out over our mistakes, and she's doing great." Leaving almost an hour later, married couple Reichen & Chip hoped to improve their position in this leg. Chip commented, "The situation we're at today, I'm actually not very pleased, considering I thought we did a lot of things right. So I realize that a lot of other Teams are really bright, and we just need to be a little smarter."
As NFL wives and moms Monica & Sheree and best friends David & Jeff departed the Pit Stop en route to the airport, Millie & Chuck and Jon & Al purchased their tickets on the 10:25 am KLM flight to Mumbai. Hoping to catch all of the Teams ahead of them, models and friends Tian & Jaree left Kasteel Muiderslot in last place at 5:42 am. Tian discussed her new approach to the Race, saying, "The only way to get through this Race is to let Jaree be herself and me to just bite my tongue. I just don't want to fight anymore." The models caught a break as the ticket counters at the airport opened up just as they arrived.
CULTURE SHOCK
With all the Teams buying their tickets on the KLM direct flight, Reichen & Chip pondered an alternative. The couple talked to an Alitalia representative about a 6:55 am flight with a connection in Milan. While the flight would arrive in Mumbia 35 minutes before the KLM flight, the window of time to catch the connecting flight in Milan was narrow. After much consideration and a discussion with Monica & Sheree, Reichen & Chip decided to take the Alitalia flight, while Monica & Sheree joined the other six Teams on the KLM flight. On choosing this option, Reichen said, "The worst thing you can do in this Race is worry about what other Teams are doing. You just have to focus on getting yourself up ahead and first."
With the gamble paying off, Reichen & Chip landed in Mumbai at 10:55 pm. Exiting the airport, the couple instantly realized they had landed in a completely different world. In the taxi ride to Film City, a teary Reichen saw people living in makeshift tents along garbage-filled streets. He commented, "It's pretty awful. I just didn't know it was this bad. I could have never been prepared for what I'm looking at right now. I just ask myself, 'What happened? What happened to make it like this?'"
At 11:30 pm, the other six Teams landed in Mumbai, each discovering the city for themselves on their cab ride to Bollywood. On the huge crowds outside the airport, Kelly commented, "This is my worst nightmare." Her fiancé Jon added, "It looked like chaos everywhere." Monica & Sheree said a prayer upon entering their taxi while David joked, "We're going straight to the desert to be sacrificed." Chuck noted, "I just saw the biggest rat I've ever seen in my life." Only Tian seemed genuinely excited, remarking, "I love it. I've never seen anything like this in my life. It smells different. It sounds different. It's super cool."
Arriving at the Bollywood gates, Reichen & Chip found the clue box and opened their clue. They discovered they must ride bicycles through the sprawling movie studio to Studio 10 and search the sound stage for their next clue when the gates reopened in the morning at 9:30 am. Soon, all the other Teams caught up and camped out for the night. As the sun rose, Teams again witnessed and became affected by the poverty they saw around them. Circus clown Jon said, "It's kind of sad. You don't even realize how lucky you are." A crying Millie added, "There's just a lot of people living in hard situations all around us right here."
DIRTY DETOUR
At 9:30 am, the gates opened and Teams mounted the bikes, pedaling towards Studio 10. Arriving at the studio in first place, David & Jeff walked onto the sound stage to encounter a vividly colored set inhabited with traditional dancers and surrounded by cameras and stage lights. Searching the set for their clue, the pair finally found it hidden behind a pillow propped against a large vase. In the envelope, David & Jeff discovered a Detour allowing them the choice of "Suds" or "Duds." Teams choosing Suds had to find an outdoor laundromat and wash one bundle of clothing by hand to reveal the next clue, printed on one article of the clothing. While dirty, the task could be completed as quickly as they were able to wash. The Duds option required Teams to locate a hard-to-find clothing shop and search through hundreds of saris, traditional Indian garments, to find the one with their clue printed on it. Teams wouldn't get dirty doing this, but finding the out-of-the-way shop and hidden clue could take a long time. Both options could only be reached by navigating India's crowded and bewildering public transportation. David & Jeff opted for Suds, along with every Team that soon followed, except Jon & Al, who opted to search for saris in Duds.
David & Jeff led the pack, running back through the studio lot, with everyone but Reichen & Chip following. Tian again tried to encourage her partner to walk faster as they were in last place. On Jaree, Tian later commented, "If we lose this by the fact that we couldn't run, then that's what's going to happen. But I'm not going to stress Jaree out anymore because she can't do it. You can't make a dog with three legs run faster." Having gone in the opposite direction from the others, Reichen & Chip grabbed an early lead by getting on a bus to take them to the train. A second bus contained Kelly & Jon, Millie & Chuck and David & Jeff. Tian & Jaree took a third bus, while Monica & Sheree and Jon & Al walked.
Leading all Teams, Reichen & Chip first discovered the crowded, chaotic trains of India. Dozens of people pushed and shoved their way onto already crowded cars, creating what Reichen called an "insane" situation. The situation proved much worse for the women. Kelly, on a train with Jon and David & Jeff, panicked when she felt men grabbed at her. "I want off this train," she pleaded to Jon. Soon, Tian & Jaree encountered the same problem on a separate train, with Jaree exclaiming, "Somebody just grabbed my boob, man!" Tian screamed, "Ow! Why are they pinching me?" When Jaree began feeling sick, Tian talked her partner through it, saying, "Baby, we can do this." After the incident, Jaree commented, "Nothing has happened yet to define us as a girl Team until today."
Arriving at Dhobi Ghat, the open-air laundromat, still in the lead, Reichen & Chip searched for the bag of laundry they were to wash. After finding it, the pair began scrubbing saris soiled with mud and clay that quickly transferred onto them. Soon, Kelly & Jon and David & Jeff arrived at the laundromat and began cleaning their bags of clothes. Reichen found his Team's clue instructing them to travel the busy streets of Mumbai to Indo Universal Engineering at Sassoon Docks to find their next route marker. David & Jeff quickly found their clue and chased after the married couple, with Kelly & Jon in third. ( Jon & Al at train station)
As the three Teams made their way to the docks, Millie & Chuck arrived at the Suds Detour, but ran past the marked bundles of laundry. Millie began to wash the clothes of some random locals until they stopped her. Just as Tian & Jaree arrived, Chuck grabbed his bundle, followed by the models. Millie's complaint about Chuck not listening to her was leveled again during the washing, but the pair found the clue before Tian & Jaree.
Meanwhile, clowns Jon & Al finally arrived at Duds after having difficulty navigating through the market area to find the shop. After searching through racks of clothes, Jon found the yellow sari containing the clue. At that point, Monica & Sheree just arrived at Dhobi Ghat to complete the Suds Detour. After washing all the saris, they hadn't found their clue and had to search the clothes again. Monica commented, "All I'm praying is that somebody had worse luck than we did." Soon, they found the clue and raced to the docks, trying to gain some ground.
SOMETHING'S FISHY
Tied for first place, Reichen & Chip and David & Jeff arrived at the Sassoon Docks. Opening their clues, the Teams found a Roadblock. In this Road Block, one Team member had to enter the foul smelling fish market, find a specific vendor, and carry 20 Palai fish, from a pile containing several different varieties of local fish, back to the market manager to get their next clue. Since they knew they had a comfortable lead, Chip and Jeff decided to find the vendor together. The duo piled fish into their baskets, carrying them back to the manager on their heads, with fish juice showering over them. After the manager counted the fish, they each received their clue instructing them to travel across town to the Gateway of India, a 79-year-old monument commemorating a visit from England's Queen Mary and the next Pit Stop.
Reichen & Chip and David & Jeff hurried into taxis, each telling their drivers to beat the other's cab. With a few quick moves by their driver, David & Jeff took the lead as each car approached the Gateway to India. Barreling out of the cab and sprinting full force, David & Jeff narrowly beat Reichen & Chip to the mat. For their efforts, Phil informed the best friends they had won a seven-night cruise to Hubbard Glacier on Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas. ( Jeff on India and its people)
After Jon completed the Roadblock en route to a third-place finish for Jon & Kelly, Millie & Chuck, Jon & Al and Tian & Jaree all arrived at the Sassoon Docks. Jon, Chuck and Tian all headed for the fish market and began collecting fish. None of the three realized that the pile contained different fish, and collected all varieties. When returning to the market manager, Chuck only had ten Palai fish, Jon had eight and Tian had fourteen. On the second try, all three Teams brought the remaining Palai fish to make twenty, with Chuck & Millie taking a lead to the Pit Stop.
ELIMINATION
As the three Teams encountered traffic in the congested city streets, Monica completed the Roadblock for her Team. In the cab, Sheree remarked, "It's not over 'til it's over." Millie & Chuck arrived at the Pit Stop in fourth place, as an anxious Tian said, "We're going to get out and run." Spotting the landmark, Jon & Al got out of their cab and began running but soon realized they didn't see the mat. In the short time the clowns searched the crowded square, Tian & Jaree exited their cab and ran for the Pit Stop. Tian's sharp eye in locating the mat resulted in a fifth place finish with Jon & Al a very close sixth. On her newfound determination in working with Jaree, Tian commented, "Sometimes everything has to come to a head before you can make changes and make things better. That's what happened, and Jaree and I are not quitters."
Emerging from their taxi, Monica encouraged her partner, saying, "Come on, Sheree. Let's finish up strong." As they stepped onto the mat, Phil informed Monica & Sheree that they were the last Team to arrive and had been eliminated from the Race. Before breaking down in tears, Monica remarked, "I'm disappointed, because I know Sheree and I were a really strong Team. To get…" Sheree continued for her friend, "To get this far and to just have a really bad leg and be eliminated, it kind of sucks." She later added, "THE AMAZING RACE was humbling, and it just taught us to be strong. It taught us to do anything we set our minds to." Monica added, "Sheree and I wanted to make our families proud, and we wanted to carry ourselves in a way that will show them that you can be stronger than you really think."
DAVID & JEFF RISE TO THE TOP; MONICA & SHEREE ELIMINATED
Teams experienced culture shock as racers journeyed from Amsterdam to Mumbai, India. Many were emotionally affected upon witnessing the extreme poverty and crowded living conditions. Kelly and Tian & Jaree endured a harrowing experience during which they were fondled and groped by several men on an overcrowded train. After taking an early lead, Reichen & Chip were passed by David & Jeff, who never looked back as they finished in first place. Monica & Sheree fell behind on the way to the Detour and fought the entire leg to gain the time back, but in the end, became the sixth Team to be eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE.
