Recap, Episode 6: Fez to Marrakech
THE DRIVE TO CASABLANCA After the mandatory twelve-hour rest period in which Teams rested, ate and mingled, brothers Ken & Gerard left the Borj Nord, a fortress in the Moroccan city of Fez, first at 4:31am. They were instructed to drive 150 miles to the city of Casablanca to find the Hussan II Mosque, the second largest religious monument in the world (behind Mecca). On their lead, Gerard commented, "We're on top again and really feeling awesome, but we have to stay sharp, because when we're sharp and when we're on it, we do really well." Friends Andre & Damon and twins Derek & Drew departed several minutes later. By this time, Ken & Gerard had hired a cab to lead all three Teams out of Fez to Casablanca. Damon commented, "We're both kind of gratified for being in second position, because we've been fighting for survival." Andre added, "Now that we're with the lead pack, we need these guys because they're pretty resourceful." Friends Flo & Zach and dating couple John Vito & Jill departed together at 5:24am. Flo remarked, "John Vito & Jill are a great Team for us to pair up with because they're really honest. So I'm not worried about them." John Vito noted, "We get along great with Flo & Zach, and it's just beneficial for both of us to put our minds together and try to pull away from the guys behind us." Just minutes behind them, Teri & Ian left the Pit Stop trying to move ahead. Ian quipped, "Time is of the essence. We gotta hammer down and show them what the old folks can do." Departing last on the road to Casablanca at 7:04am, Arianne said, "We did entertain the notion last night that perhaps it was all over for us, but we're still totally in it, and we have a lot more to give to this race." Ken & Gerard, Andre & Damon and Derek & Drew led the way to the Hussan II Mosque, arriving at the route marker in first place. They were instructed to travel 150 miles by train to Marrakech. From there, they needed to take a cab to the outskirts of town to find a desert oasis called The Palmarie to find their next clue. Meanwhile, Teri & Ian and Flo & Zach battled for fourth place on the drive to the mosque. John Vito & Jill encountered car problems and were delayed for an hour. Ian and Flo got into an argument at the mosque as Flo tried to take the cab that had directed Ian there to help her get to the train station. Ian barked at Flo: "I found this cab. He's mine!" Flo responded, "You don't need to yell. It's really rude. I didn't know that was your taxi." When Teri suggested they simply get another cab after they get the clue in the mosque, he replied, "I want him to stay here. When I make a decision, it's a decision." As the lead Teams of the pair of brothers and Andre & Damon made their way by train to Marrakech, Flo & Zach discovered they had just missed the 9:10am train. This allowed both Teri & Ian and John Vito & Jill, who survived their car troubles, to catch them at the station before the next train departed. At the station, all three Teams discussed the advantages and disadvantages of using the Fast Forward on this leg of the race. The Fast Forward required Teams to find a carpet shop in Marrakech. Once there, the first Team to find the Fast Forward emblem woven into one of the carpets would win. Flo initially felt that she and Zach should use it because "Teri & Ian were nipping at their heels." Zach countered that they would be better off if they could survive this leg with the option of using the Fast Forward in a later round. Ian wanted to use the Fast Forward because he was beginning to feel tired. Teri suggested they "just wait" and decide on the train to Marrakech. John Vito & Jill also decided to use the Fast Forward in this leg. DESERT DETOUR Once off the train, Ken & Gerard jumped in the lead with the help of a good cab driver, arriving at the Palmarie, outside Marrakech, in first place. There, they found the Detour entitled "Now you see it, now you don't." The "Now you see it" option required Teams to choose a pair of horses to ride to a route marker, which they were able to see from where they were. At the marker, they would dig for clues painted on pottery in the sand. While the distance was short, traveling by horse could be slow, and digging for clues could take some time. Teams choosing "Now you don't" chose a sand bike to ride along a course to a route marker, which they were not able to see from where they were. Once there, they simply needed to make a rubbing of a clue etched on a stone. While the distance to the route marker was longer, Teams could travel fast with the sand bikes and could make a rubbing quickly. While Derek & Drew and Andre & Damon opted for the sand bikes, Ken & Gerard tried their luck digging for clues. They soon discovered the difficulties of this choice as they only unearthed rocks. The pair decided to cut their losses and get the sand bikes. Derek & Drew had their own worries as they navigated incorrectly and became lost on the way to the route marker. With Andre & Damon following them, the Teams worked together and found the stone with the clue, which was written in Arabic. By asking some locals, they discovered they needed to find their way back to the center of Marrakech to the rooftop of the Glacier Café, which doesn't open to the public until 4:45pm. MAGIC CARPET Once the second train arrived in Marrakech, Flo & Zach conferred with John Vito & Jill about the Fast Forward. Both Teams admitted they intended to try for it. Rather than wasting time competing against each other, Flo and Jill decided which Team would try for the Fast Forward in a classic game of Rock, Paper, Scissors that Jill won when scissors cut paper. John Vito & Jill decided to battle Teri & Ian in finding the carpet, but got a slow cab. This allowed Teri & Ian to search while John Vito & Jill were caught in traffic. Ian told Teri, "You gotta use your eyes." While the married couple continued looking through huge piles of rugs, John Vito & Jill arrived and joined in the hunt. As the search intensified, Teri exclaimed, "I got it!" John Vito & Jill quickly left as Teri & Ian celebrated their victory before proceeding directly to the Riad Catalina, a traditional Moroccan guesthouse in Marrakech. Once Teri & Ian arrived at the guesthouse, Phil greeted them, telling them they were the first to arrive. In addition, as winners of this leg of THE AMAZING RACE each won a Kodak Easyshare Digital Camera. When Phil asked what was making their strategy work so far, Ian replied, "We're a team." Teri added, "We fight. We maybe talk nasty sometimes, but when push comes to shove, we shove together." Having lost the chance for the Fast Forward, Flo & Zach made their way to the Detour at the Palmarie, where they met an exhausted Ken & Gerard, who could only comment "It's a bitch." John Vito & Jill soon followed as both Teams chose the faster sand bikes rather than the slower horses. The Teams rejoined forces after completing the task, and John Vito informed Flo & Zach that Teri & Ian had won the Fast Forward. Both pairs then headed to the Glacier Café in hopes of catching the other Teams. Meanwhile, Aaron & Arianne arrived in Marrakech to find that the Fast Forward had already been taken. Hoping that another Team made a mistake or expecting to encounter a line where all of the Teams bunched up, the pair from New York remained optimistic. At the Detour, Aaron had difficulties controlling the sand bike and became frustrated with Arianne distracting him. The pair managed to find the rock, make a rubbing, and proceed back to Marrakech. SERVING SNAILS The five other Teams waited patiently outside of the Glacier Café for its 4:45pm opening. On the rooftop, they discovered a Roadblock. With so many Teams so close, time was of the essence. In this Roadblock, one Team member must partner up with a local food vendor, help him set up, and then personally sell five bowls of escargot, a favorite food of Moroccans. Andre got an early lead by selling the first bowl of escargot. Jill cleverly asked her vendor how to say phrases in Arabic to lure in customers. Flo excitedly sold her first bowl, thanking her customer, while Derek pleaded for people to come to his station. Andre continued to cruise along, selling three when Gerard sold his first two bowls. As Derek finally sold his first bowl, Andre completed the task first and ripped open the clue instructing him to proceed to the next Pit Stop at the Riad Catalina guesthouse. Soon after, Jill sold her fifth bowl, followed by Gerard and Flo. This prompted Drew to ask, "Where's Derek?" Eventually, Derek finished the task as well, and all Teams again found themselves in a cab race to the finish line. Having taken the lead out the Pit Stop, Andre & Damon found themselves with a cab driver who didn't know where he was going. Andre said, "It's the frustrating part about this, because we don't control our own destiny. Our destiny is in this driver's hands." As Andre & Damon were taken to a location outside the city of Marrakech, Flo & Zach and Ken & Gerard were dropped off simultaneously in front of the guesthouse. The two Teams raced on foot to the mat, where Flo & Zach edged out the brothers for second place. Things got worse for the fire fighter and police officer from Los Angeles as they asked people for the location of the Catalina Riad. Damon remarked, "I need to see a flag right now." After being shown around on foot by a local, the pair realized they were in the wrong location entirely. Commenting on their cab driver, Damon said, "He may have just dropped up off in the middle of nowhere, dude." While waiting for their taxi to return to Marrakech, Andre & Damon were stopped by a local official who asked to see their passports and detained them. While Andre & Damon struggled through their problems, Derek & Drew and John Vito & Jill got out of their cabs and raced to the mat. The two Teams ran through the snaking corridors to the rooftop of the Riad Catalina. Derek & Drew arrived in fourth place and John Vito & Jill in fifth place. Andre & Damon made their way back to Marrakech after an ordeal where the local official asked the pair to surrender their passports. After refusing, the pair received help from the security staff of THE AMAZING RACE to get them out of the situation. After an early lead, the pair disappointedly arrived at the Pit Stop in sixth place. ELIMINATION Unaware that all of the Teams had arrived at the Pit Stop, Aaron & Arianne proceeded to the Road Block, which Aaron performed, having a great time serving the townspeople of Marrakech. Aaron later said, "Today, we went through the whole day hopeful. And I think that sometimes ignorance is bliss. We had a good time." The pair then made their way to the rooftop of the Riad Catalina, where Phil informed them they were the last Team to arrive, resulting in their elimination. Aaron said, "We had a great time. We had some good laughs. We met some really good people. We didn't give up, and I think that's the important thing." Commenting on her relationship with Aaron, Arianne remarked, "We've always had a very special friendship. Fifteen years ago, I knew that I had found my match. It feels good to have that person in my life." TERI & IAN TAKE THE LEAD; AARON & ARIANNE ELIMINATED Teri & Ian beat John Vito & Jill to the Fast Forward, resulting in their first place finish. Meanwhile, best friends Aaron & Arianne couldn't make up the time lost from the last leg's gasoline mishap as they became the sixth Team eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race3/show/episode06/ar3story01.shtml
