Recap, Episode 5: Lisbon to Fez
A NEW ALLIANCE FORGED After the twelve-hour rest period, Ken & Gerard were first to depart the Torre de Belem at 2:29pm. They were instructed to travel to the western-most point of continental Europe. After a quick map check, they realized they were heading to Cabo da Roca in Portugal, only 22 miles away. They waited for twins Derek & Drew, and both Teams set out for the train station. Before heading there, the Band of Brothers got some company when cop & fireman Andre & Damon joined them. On their strategy, Andre commented, "If we're having a situation where we have no idea what to do, we're going to stay with the pack, because if you go off on your own and you leave the pack, you're going to lose." Accordingly, unsure where to go next, the pair followed the brothers all the way to the Santa Apolonia Train Station, then offered money to Gerard in exchange for information about where to go. After a discussion with the other brothers, Gerard accepted the offer and included the firefighter and cop in their alliance. Boarding the train, Gerard said, "All right, fellas. We got a good leg up, hopefully." John Vito & Jill, the couple from New York, seeking the fastest way possible, took a risk and used the advice from their cab driver to travel by cab rather than train. Leaving the Pit Stop last, lifelong friends Aaron & Arianne remarked, "Our rank so far at the Pit Stops has been three, two, and four. So, to all of a sudden be last is a real kick in the ass." Aaron & Arianne also took a cab to Cabo da Roca, but were unsure whether it was the fastest way to go. Both pairs were rewarded for their risk when they arrived ahead of all other Teams. FLO'S WOES At Cabo da Roca, Teams encountered a Detour, in which they had to choose between two ways to get to a route marker at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean: either "ropes" or "slopes." Teams choosing "ropes" took a shuttle bus to cliffs overlooking the ocean and rappelled 300 feet to the bottom--a scary but fast choice. Only two Teams could rappel at a time. Teams choosing "slopes" walked down sloping trails to the shoreline--a safer but slower choice. As they geared up for the descent down the cliff, Aaron commented on being first to arrive at the Detour: "This is one sweet day." Hot on their heels at the cliffs were John Vito & Jill. At one point, Aaron had difficulties when his rope caught on the rocks. "I don't like it right here," he lamented, "I'm freaking out." Conversely, Jill had a great time, shouting, "It's too slow!" All four finished quickly and headed back up the cliff to their vehicles. Flo & Zach and Michael & Kathy arrived next. After reading the instructions, Flo immediately expressed fear about rappelling. She remarked, "Zach, this is really steep. I don't, I don't, I don't want to." Zach assured her that the cliff they would scale wasn't as steep, and the two continued in their shuttle bus. While Michael & Kathy and Flo & Zach received instructions atop the cliff, Flo continued to worry about what could happen to her. "What happens if I get detached? What happens if I slip?" Zach tried to calm her as he put on his gear. He joked to one of the instructors, "She's going to flip out when she sees that it's like this ." As she began her decent, an incredulous Flo looked down, asking, "Is this a joke?" Michael tried to calm her by saying he would be right beside her on the other line. Flo descended a few more feet before she began crying hysterically. As Michael tried to reassure her, she begged, "I want to get off!" Flo pulled herself up, still crying, and she and Zach walked down the slope to the route marker. Zach told her, "You made a great effort." Ian, suiting up for the rappel, remarked, "This is where we can get ahead now. The walk is a lot longer than the rappel." At first, Teri was tentative in her descent, but excitedly finished, shouting "I'm here! I did it!" Ian replied, "We got Teams ahead of us. We gotta move." As Michael & Kathy and Teri & Ian finished the rappel, the alliance of brothers and Andre & Damon arrived at the Detour dead last, having taken the train. All three Teams chose to rappel to save time. To help his brother out, Gerard quipped to Ken, "Just pretend there is a dozen glazed donuts at the bottom!" DIESEL NIGHTMARE Leading the charge out of Portugal, Aaron & Arianne discovered they had to drive 250 miles to the port city of Algeciras, Spain. From there, they needed to book passage on a ferry to Tangier, Morocco. On the drive to Algeciras, Aaron & Arianne commented on their reversal of fortune. "I can't believe we're still in the race," marveled Arianne. Aaron added, "Twelve hours ago we thought we were eliminated." As day turned to night, Teams continued their journey by car to Algeciras. Along the way, all Teams needed to refuel their vehicles. Aaron said, "This little baby, she needs a nice batch of unleaded" and promptly filled it. At the gas station, Damon correctly noted that the vehicles used diesel fuel, not unleaded gasoline. John Vito & Jill also filled with diesel, while Teri & Ian incorrectly filled with unleaded gasoline. Also filling with unleaded were Michael & Kathy and Flo & Zach. Shortly after leaving the gas station, the four Teams knew something was wrong with their vehicles. Michael, unaware of what was wrong, said, "It just stalled. It's kind of scary, actually." Ian asked, "What's going on?" Teri asked if the car took diesel fuel and Ian responded, "Good point." Flo & Zach also quickly discovered their mistake of adding the wrong fuel and sought to correct it as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Aaron started losing confidence, remarking, "I don't know what to do. I just want to go home." After being unable to flag down motorists, Aaron began crying, saying, "I'm so humiliated right now." Eventually, after Derek & Drew passed them, a police officer stopped and offered assistance. After a few hours, they were back on the road. Frustrated, Michael & Kathy threw in the towel for the night, not being able to solve their problem. They checked into the nearby hotel next to where they stalled and waited until morning, when an attendant was available to look at their car. Flo & Zach walked to a gas station, commenting, "This is where miracles are made." They managed to get a tow truck to rescue and repair their vehicle. After their engine started, Flo excitedly hugged Zach, saying, "We're back in the game!" Teri & Ian also walked to a gas station, but Ian bought a siphon hose and diesel fuel to fix the problem himself. After draining the fuel and adding diesel, the married couple was back on the road. An elated, proud Teri commented on her husband, "I don't believe. I don't believe that he did this. This is, like, cool." Meanwhile, the other four Teams who used diesel fuel arrived at the Algeciras port in the middle of the night. Andre & Damon, first to arrive, greeted John Vito & Jill, Ken & Gerard and Derek & Drew as each arrived for the 7am ferry to Morocco. Teri & Ian and Flo & Zach arrived at the port just before 8am, narrowly making it onto the next ferry out. Ian remarked, "I can't believe we're still in this race." As the lead Teams made their way off the ferry, they found their next clue: they were to make their way through Tangier to find the Viajes Flandria Travel Agency. Once there, they had to sign up for seats on charter buses departing one hour apart to the city of Fez. In a part of town called the Old City, they would find their next route marker. Each bus could hold only three Teams. In a cab race across town, John Vito & Jill lost, arriving fourth and having to wait for the second bus. Jill took it in stride, remarking, "Luck of the draw." This delay allowed Teri & Ian and Flo & Zach to catch up to John Vito & Jill and join them on the second bus. Meanwhile, in the back of the pack again, Aaron & Arianne made their way onto another ferry to Morocco. Aaron complained, "This is one bitter Team. We went from happy and excited to bitter and jaded in 24 hours." Michael & Kathy continued their drive to Algeciras, hoping that another Team made a mistake. Aaron & Arianne eventually made their way off the ferry to find the travel agency for the ride to Fez. A FOUL ROAD BLOCK The first bus, carrying Ken & Gerard, Andre & Damon and Derek & Drew, arrived in Fez. There, they encountered a Roadblock that only one member could perform. That person had to race through the narrow streets of the ancient marketplace in Fez, known for its leather, and find a tannery. Once there, they needed to search 25 vats of foul-smelling dye for their next clue. They were unaware that the clue was in only three of the vats. With the guidance of local children, the Teams made their way to the tannery. Gerard, first to search in the vat, commented, "I think I'm going to be sick." He finished quickly, followed by Damon and Derek. Teams then discovered that they must choose a marked car and drive across the city to the next Pit Stop at the Borj Nord, a 420-year old fortress designed to protect the city of Fez. John Vito & Jill, Flo & Zach and Teri & Ian arrived in the second bus and battled in the tannery vats looking for the clue, while Aaron & Arianne hoped Michael & Kathy wouldn't be joining them on the bus ride to Fez. ELIMINATION Ken & Gerard led the way to the Pit Stop. For finishing in first place, the brothers each won a Kodak EasyShare Digital Camera. Andre & Damon soon followed in second place, with Derek & Drew in third. Flo & Zach and John Vito & Jill, quickly finishing the Road Block, arrived tied for fourth place. Soon after, Teri & Ian made their way to the mat at the Borj Nord. After completing the Roadblock and driving to the Pit Stop, Aaron feared, "I think we're pulling in last." At the mat, the pair from New York received some great news when Phil told them they were the seventh Team to arrive. As the sun set, Michael & Kathy arrived at the Borj Nord, becoming the fifth Team to be eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. A weary Kathy admitted, "We were ready." Commenting on their long-distance relationship, Michael remarked, "It's time for her to move to San Diego. I'm trying to get her over to my side, the best side, the west side." GAS PUMP ERROR ELIMINATES MICHAEL & KATHY After getting off to a good start on the road to Algeciras, Spain, Michael & Kathy made the mistake of adding unleaded gasoline to their diesel-fueled car. Their ensuing car problems cost them valuable time, resulting in their elimination. Meanwhile, brother-power continued as Ken & Gerard finished in first place. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race3/show/episode05/ar3story01.shtml
