Recap, Episode 4: St. Rémy-de-Provence, France OFF TO PARIS
After the Pit Stop rest period, Steve & Josh departed Austria's Seeschloss Orth in first place at 2:57 am. The pair opened their clue to learn they must fly 800 miles to Paris, France, and then travel to the city of Le Mans to find the famous Le Mans racetrack. Almost immediately, the father and son quarreled over the mode of transportation to the Salzburg Airport. Josh, trying to save money, insisted on taking the train, assuming all the Teams would catch up to them at the station. Believing time to be more valuable, Steve suggested taking a taxi. Josh countered, "It's not worth the extra money." Steve capitulated, and the two waited for the train to Salzburg, but Steve warned Josh, "You're wrong on this."
Josh learned the hard way that father sometimes does know best. NFL wives Monica & Sheree, Reichen & Chip and Tian & Jaree, all departing the Pit Stop an hour later, took taxis and arrived at the Salzburg Airport before Steve & Josh even boarded their train. The four women quickly booked tickets on a flight to Paris with a connection in Frankfurt. Reichen & Chip, third in line, were told the flight was now full. Exasperated, Reichen said, "I just can't believe it." Luckily, the couple got on the flight, but encountered difficulties in Frankfurt, where they realized they had been booked in business class through to Paris. Monica & Sheree and Tian & Jaree continued, while Reichen & Chip were now a flight behind in third place. Trailing these three Teams after losing their lead from the Pit Stop, Steve & Josh caught a flight from Salzburg to Paris via Zurich.
Meanwhile, the next set of four Teams left the Pit Stop. Having spent the rest period working together and planning a strategy, 12-year dating virgins Millie & Chuck and circus clowns Jon & Al headed for the train station, destined for the Munich Airport, which, while further away, offered a larger selection of flights. Best friends David & Jeff and engaged couple Kelly & Jon joined the other two Teams at the station, and all four Teams boarded the train for Munich with a stop at Salzburg. Asking Millie which airport they were headed to, Kelly received a polite, chilly reply of "We don't know." On Millie's behavior towards her, Kelly commented, "Millie didn't want to have anything to do with us and just blew us off. I don't know if it's just her personality, or if she's just super, super competitive."
Millie's competitive streak paid off when Jon & Kelly got off at Salzburg while the other three Teams went to Munich. Millie & Chuck, Jon & Al and David & Jeff all took direct flights from Munich to Paris, while Kelly & Jon found themselves tied for last place with air traffic controllers Steve & Dave in Salzburg. Kelly willingly shared information with Steve & Dave, saying "We wanted them to be on our flight so we knew we weren't the only ones who were last." She added, "They're so nice. I don't want to race against them. Millie the Mole: that's who I wanted to beat. She's like one of those little cheerleaders that in high school I used to throw spitwads in their hair when they were up there cheering."
NEED FOR SPEED
Arriving in Paris tied for first place, Monica & Sheree acted quickly and got on the 11:00 am train to Le Mans, while Tian & Jaree spent enough time asking for directions and help that Reichen & Chip caught up to them on the 12:00 pm train. Once Monica & Sheree arrived at the Le Mans racetrack, they encountered a Roadblock. In it, one Team member would have to change out the four tires on a racecar and do a lap around the track with a professional driver.
Monica volunteered her services for the Roadblock and donned her race suit. She soon discovered the difficulties of the task as she chased after a tire that got away from her. She later commented, "I've never changed a tire in my life. Then to have to change four! Those tires were so heavy. They probably weighed just as much as I did." After some early hesitancy, Monica changed the tires like a pro and took off for a lap around the famous raceway. A cheering Sheree hugged Monica when she got out of the car. On the fast drive, Monica said, "Oh my God. It was scary as hell."
Opening their next clue, Monica & Sheree discovered they would have to drive a marked car 556 miles to Marseilles, enter Port 4 to find a lighthouse and their next route marker. As they drove out of Le Mans, Monica said, "We feel great about ourselves right now. We know we're far ahead of the pack."
As the middle of the pack, Millie & Chuck, Steve & Josh, David & Jeff and Jon & Al landed in Paris, Chip and Tian battled for second place at the raceway. Tian took an early lead, but Chip changed his four tires first and finished his lap ahead of Tian. The two Teams separately headed for Marseilles, realizing that the expressway would be the fastest route. Monica & Sheree, unaware of this, opted for slower back roads.
At the racetrack, Millie, short of breath, asked Chuck to do the Roadblock. Chuck's "slow and methodical" ways, as described by Millie, allowed Jon (of Jon & Al) to complete the Roadblock first. After putting on the four tires, Chuck experienced a bout of claustrophobia and had to get out of the driver's seat for a minute. "Feeling tight! Hot and tight! Not good timing, I know!" he exclaimed. Eventually, Chuck calmed down, said a prayer, and raced his lap. Later, Chuck commented, "As far as being in a tight space, I was freaked out for a little while. I was nervous."
With Jeff and Josh also successfully completing the Roadblock, Kelly & Jon and Steve & Dave finally landed in Paris. Insisting on being a full partner on her Team, Kelly made Jon promise to allow her to perform the Roadblock, regardless of the task. Jon simply laughed as Kelly struggled with her racing suit and began rolling tires to the car. While encountering some resistance in changing the tires, Kelly did finish and rode the lap as Dave changed his car's tires.
Arriving at the gated and closed Port #4 in Marseilles in first place, Reichen & Chip talked to a security guard about their options. The guard told them the port was closed until 9:00 am and that they could not wait outside the gate. With no other choice, the married couple went to a hotel for the night, as did Tian & Jaree soon after. Eventually other Teams arrived at the gate, and the guard told them they couldn't park there. Led by David & Jeff, Monica & Sheree and Steve & Dave, Teams began to park on a soft shoulder adjacent to the port entrance, camping in their cars for the night.
STANDOFF
The following morning, Tian & Jaree returned to the Port #4 gate, where a security officer told them to park at the entrance because too many cars were on the shoulder. The models complied with the guard's orders as Reichen & Chip arrived behind them. Tian explained to Chip, "I'm only doing what the guy said. If it happens to give me an advantage, then so be it."
Watching from their cars on the shoulder, the other Teams began to grow irritated. Jeff commented, "Tian & Jaree somehow feel privileged, just pull up at the last minute and get in the front of the line." Steve & Dave and David & Jeff led the other Teams over to where Tian & Jaree parked to confront them on this issue. When asked if they planned to remain parked where they were, Tian replied that she was told to park there. Frustrated with Tian and Chip's unwillingness to move their vehicles, Steve walked away, offering a warning that they should "check their tires, because you never know what'll happen."
Wanting to diffuse a volatile situation, Chip suggested to Reichen to move their car. Jaree pointed this out to Tian, who snapped, "I'm not pulling back! Whose Team are you on?" Jaree responded, "I know that if we'd pull in front of them, they're going to freak out." Reichen tried to mend fences by announcing that he and Chip moved their car. After Steve (of Steve & Josh) offered a handshake, Chip exclaimed, "No, I don't want to shake anyone's hand, because everyone's questioning my integrity." Jeff countered, "You guys think you're privileged. Going up to the front of the line." Chip screamed, "Don't question my integrity!"
At 9:00 am, the gates opened as Tian graciously allowed all the cars to enter the port. Tian commented, "I didn't know when I parked up there, the reaction was going to be that crazy." The confrontation was soon forgotten as Teams raced to find the lighthouse amid the sprawling port. While Tian & Jaree and Steve & Josh asked locals for directions, Jon told Kelly to help him by reading the map. She questioned the direction they were headed, saying, "I don't see any other cars here." Knowing he was correct, Jon led them to the clue box, quipping, "How many times do I have to prove you wrong?" Opening their clue, they discovered they must drive 93 miles to Gorges Du Blavet mountain range.
MOUNTAIN DETOUR
After passing Kelly & Jon when exiting the port, Reichen & Chip led all Teams into the mountains. Reading their clue, they looked for the marked parking lot for their car. Chip believed he found the lot, but Reichen remained unsure. As the couple walked down the brushy incline, Reichen asked Chip again if they were in the correct lot. Crossing a small stream, Chip said, "Hopefully, we'll see the box."
Meanwhile, David & Jeff, Jon & Al and Kelly & Jon found the correct parking lot and encountered a Detour. In this Detour, Teams had to choose either "Ropes" or "Slopes." Teams choosing Ropes Teams had to rappel 230 feet down the side of a cliff to the next route marker. While scary, the task could have been completed quickly. Teams opting for Slopes would take a long, sloping trail to the same route marker below. This task, while not scary, would have taken considerably longer.
All three Teams opted for Ropes in an effort to continue their lead. After some early jitters about the steep drop, all three Teams completed the task successfully. David & Jeff, first down the cliff, had a problem when they couldn't find the clue box below, which allowed Jon & Al and Kelly & Jon to pass them. The clowns opened their clue instructing them to hike back up to their cars and drive 150 miles to the Chateau des Alpilles, a 200-year-old mansion and their next Pit Stop.
As Millie & Chuck and Monica & Sheree arrived at the Detour and chose Ropes, Reichen & Chip finally agreed they weren't in the right place and walked back to their car. A very confused David & Jeff arrived at the top of the cliff without their clue, realizing they now had to walk back down. This allowed Millie & Chuck to pass them as well, with Monica & Sheree close behind. A frustrated Reichen & Chip arrived at the Detour as Steve & Dave finished their rappel. Annoyed with their costly mistake, the couple quickly scaled the cliff and headed out with the hope of finishing ahead of at least one Team.
PUZZLING FAST FORWARD
Still in Marseilles and very lost, Tian & Jaree decided to gamble for the Fast Forward in an effort to avoid elimination. In this Fast Forward, Teams must find a museum where they had to solve a puzzle consisting of 20 pieces that formed a picture of the Pit Stop, the Chateau des Alpilles. The friends arrived at the museum to be greeted by a giant blank wall and the puzzle pieces they needed to place on it. Soon the pair completed the puzzle to earn the Fast Forward, which directed them to the chateau. After a short drive, Tian & Jaree ran onto the chateau grounds and claimed first place.
ELIMINATION
Taking the lead out of the Detour, Kelly & Jon were pointed in the wrong direction, away from the Chateau des Alpilles, losing half an hour of time. This allowed Jon & Al and Millie & Chuck to tie for second place. Monica & Sheree finished fourth, Reichen & Chip fifth, and David & Jeff sixth. Still battling to find the chateau, Kelly & Jon narrowly beat Steve & Dave for seventh place.
After all the Teams had checked in, father and son Steve & Josh arrived at the Detour and completed their rappel. Josh commented, "My dad is still entirely my hero. I've always looked up to him growing up, but now I see my dad in the present tense, and he's an outstanding guy." The pair reached the Pit Stop after nightfall, when Phil informed them they were the last to arrive and had been eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. About his experience, Josh said, "I would have liked to have gone further, but I already got what I wanted out of this." Hugging his son, Steve added, "I already had what I wanted."
MODELS PUT PIECES TOGETHER, TAKE FIRST PLACE
Set against the beautiful countryside and charming cities of France, Teams again battled over position in line outside a portside gate in Marseilles. After spending the night in their cars, Teams cried foul as models Tian & Jaree and married couple Reichen & Chip drove their cars to the front of the gate. While shocked at the angry outcries, the two Teams wanted to make peace, allowing the other Teams to enter the port first when the gates opened. After a grueling Detour rappel in the mountains, Teams raced to the Pit Stop. Having become lost finding the Detour, Tian & Jaree opted for the Fast Forward, giving them a first place finish. Father and son Steve & Josh, also encountering difficulties in navigating the roads of France, became the fourth Team to be eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE.
