Recap, Episode 3: Cancún to Aberdeen
After the 12-hour rest period in Tulum, a Caribbean paradise on the east coast of Mexico, twins Derek & Drew departed first at 3:18 am. They opened their clue to find that they needed to travel over 5500 miles to London, England. Once there, they would go to the local town of Cambridge to find business called Scudamore's. AIRPORT WOES To travel to England, Teams first needed to return to Mexico City. Feeling comfortable with a solid lead over Aaron & Arianne and the other Teams, the twins commented, "Best case scenario: we're the only ones on the first flight out of here. It's a lot less stressful when you're out in front." The second- through fifth-place Teams of Aaron & Arianne, Heather & Eve, Michael & Kathy and Flo & Zach all entered the Cancún Airport intending to capture the lead from Derek & Drew. "The twin hunt starts now," one said. Another added, "Whoever captures the twins gets a prize." At the airport, troubles began as all Teams searched for the fastest flight to Mexico City and then London. While others scrambled, Derek & Drew left first for Mexico City at 7 am. The quartet split up as Heather & Eve and Flo & Zach decided to stay back in Cancún and book all the way through to London, while Aaron & Arianne and Michael & Kathy moved on. Heather said, "The most important thing is booking tickets. Before we get on the plane, I want to have something booked going all the way to Heathrow." Flo added to Zach, "I want to be on a flight to London before we leave here." The two Teams left behind were rewarded with bookings on a flight to London via Paris, and departed Cancún at 11:05 am. In Mexico City, Derek & Drew found a flight to London via Miami and were the first Team to depart, followed by Aaron & Arianne and Michael & Kathy. The two lagging Teams had a small difficulty in Miami, having only 40 minutes to transfer planes for an international flight on which they didn't have their seat assignments. They were initially told that they didn't have any space left on the flight. The airline managed to upgrade them to business class (though the Teams didn't have to pay for it) to get them on the flight. Ken & Gerard, John Vito & Jill and Andre & Damon all took a 10:25 am flight to Mexico City. Of the three Teams, only Ken & Gerard had their connecting flight, through Paris, booked as well. Further behind these Teams, Teri & Ian managed to book a flight to Mexico City. Ian excitedly commented, "I'm fifty years old. I'm the oldest guy in this race. I really want to be there at the end. I want to compete. I don't want to throw in the towel." Meanwhile, Dennis & Andrew struggled to find any available flights, falling behind all of the Teams. TALLY HO! Landing in Heathrow Airport at 6:35 am, Derek & Drew led the pack on the way to the city of Cambridge, looking for the local business named Scudamore's Boatyards. Soon after, Ken & Gerard, Flo & Zach and Heather & Eve arrived in London. At the route marker, the twins found a Detour, where they had the choice of "punting" or "biking" to their next clue. Teams who chose "punting" would navigate one mile down the River Cam using a traditional English boat called a punt. While traveling a shorter distance, the boats would move slowly and could be difficult to navigate. "Biking" required Teams to travel on a marked, six-mile course through Cambridge on a tandem bike. Teams would travel faster, but have a longer distance to cover. Derek & Drew had few problems completing the punting task, while Ken & Gerard's difficulties with their boat caused amusement for many onlookers, as they fell time and time again into the water. Eve became frustrated with their boat, prompting Heather to tell Eve, "I just need you to not complain and help me if you can." Aaron & Arianne opted for the bike ride through Cambridge. Flo & Zach also chose to bike after an unsuccessful attempt at punting made them reconsider. In the end, Michael & Kathy, who punted, met Aaron & Arianne at the route marker under the bridge and proceeded onward. From the Detour, Teams needed to make their way to charter buses in Cambridge going to Aberdeen, Scotland, 350 miles away. The first bus departed at 7:30 pm, followed by a 10:00 bus and a 1:30 am bus. Once there, Teams needed to find their next route marker in a field in the Highlands of Scotland. Derek & Drew spent their afternoon catching some sun and relaxing, waiting for their bus. Ken & Gerard joined them, commenting, "All the outsiders are here." As other Teams arrived at the charter bus, Gerard said, "They made it. We were hoping they'd be stuck in Miami for a couple of hours." Joining the two brother Teams on the first bus were Aaron & Arianne, Michael & Kathy, Heather & Eve and Flo & Zach. As the lead Teams headed to Scotland, lagging Teams Andre & Damon, John Vito & Jill and Teri & Ian arrived in London and headed to Scudamore's. John Vito & Jill managed to get a leg up by completing the punting Detour and running to barely get on the 10 pm bus to Scotland. Relieved to be the only Team on the bus, Jill said, "We feel much better now." Meanwhile, Teri & Ian struggled to see where they were traveling in their punt down the river, but eventually found the clue. Along with Andre & Damon, they took the final 1:30 am bus to Aberdeen, believing they were in last place. HEAVY ARTILLERY Knowing they were in last place, Dennis & Andrew arrived in London as other Teams made their way to Scotland. They immediately went for the Fast Forward at the Duxford Imperial War Museum. There, they had to maneuver a war tank through a battlefield obstacle course in less than 90 seconds. With Dennis driving the tank, they successfully won the Fast Forward. Andrew commented, "I'm so proud of my dad for driving that tank so quick. He flew through the obstacle course. I don't think anybody could have done it that easy on the first try." Having won, they proceeded directly to the Pit Stop in a chauffeured limousine, complete with champagne, as a gift for their battlefield victory. LET THE GAMES BEGIN Once off the bus in Scotland, Teams took a taxi to Stonehaven, looking for a field in the Highlands to find their next route marker. With all six Teams bunched together, a cab race ensued, with Heather & Eve and Ken & Gerard tearing open the clue first. They discovered a Roadblock, in which only one Team Member can perform the task. In this case, that person had to complete three traditional Scottish events in the Highland Games. The first event was the Caber Toss, which required participants to throw a caber, a long, wooden pole, end over end so that it landed within the designated lines. The second event was the hammer throw, in which they would throw a traditional ball-shaped hammer into a painted area on the field. Finally, in the shot put, they had to toss a heavy rock forward as many times as it took to get to the finish line to earn their next clue. Most Teams, including Heather & Eve and Aaron & Arianne, struggled with the Caber toss. Aaron asked incredulously, "It has to get between the lines? The whole thing?" Watching Zach, a frustrated Flo exclaimed, "Why is it taking him so long?" Derek & Drew and Ken & Gerard emerged first from the games to find their route marker, which instructed them to travel by foot to the next Pit Stop at Dunnottar Castle, an 800-year-old structure overlooking the North Sea. ELIMINATION Ken & Gerard tried to chase Derek & Drew to the Pit Stop, but the twins proved too fast and finished first again. Ken & Gerard, Flo & Zach, Aaron & Arianne, Heather & Eve and Michael & Kathy soon followed. As Dennis & Andrew enjoyed their limousine drive to the castle, John Vito & Jill completed the Roadblock and finished in seventh place. Teri & Ian and Andre & Damon raced from the last bus to the fields to complete the task. Teri became increasingly frustrated as she performed the Roadblock. As Ian tried to help her, Teri said, "I can't. Don't give me instructions. It was your choice not to do it." Teri successfully completed the tasks, but not before Andre overtook her and ran to the finish line with Damon, to clinch eighth place. Expecting elimination, Teri & Ian faced Phil on the mat, where he told them they were the ninth Team to arrive. Teri screamed, while Ian said, "We made it? We made it!" As night fell, Dennis & Andrew's limousine made its way down the winding path to the castle. There, Phil informed them that they were the last Team to arrive. Dennis told his son, "Andrew, buddy, you know I love you. I'm so glad you came to me that one night and said, 'Dad, we gotta do this Race.' And we've done it. We've made the Race." Andrew, reflecting on this experience, said, "Throughout the Race, the biggest thing I wanted to change was I wanted my dad to see me as an adult. I've always been his little boy, his child. I just turned 21. I'm stepping out on my own." TWINS KEEP UP PACE AS DENNIS & ANDREW ARE ELIMINATED Flight problems hampered the father-son duo of Dennis & Andrew as they got stuck in Mexico, while other Teams completed tasks in England. Even though they won the Fast Forward, it was not enough to save them, and they became the third Team to be eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race3/show/episode03/ar3story01.shtml
