Recap, Episode 2: Mexico City to Cancún After the mandatory twelve-hour rest period, when Teams can mingle, eat and sleep, brothers Ken & Gerard were first to depart from the Hacienda at 10:36 pm. They soon discovered that they needed to drive 133 miles to the ancient city of Teotihuacán, where they would have to climb 248 steps to the top of the twenty-story Pyramid of the Sun to find the next route marker.
PAIRING UP
The difficulties of navigating a foreign country caused some Teams to join forces. Friends Flo & Zach teamed up with lifelong friends Aaron & Arianne, while Michael & Kathy, the long-distance dating couple, paired with John Vito & Jill, the dating couple. Flo commented, "Hopefully with four people working with a map, we can get there quicker."
On the road to Teotihuacán, Michael, leading his quartet, managed to catch up to the Teams led by Zach. While law school roommates Heather & Eve joined Ken & Gerard at the gates to the Pyramid to wait until the 7:00 am opening, Zach led the caravan of four Teams in the wrong direction. Aaron & Arianne, becoming increasingly frustrated with Zach's navigation skills, said to each other, "This does not seem like the way to anywhere." At a fork in the road, Zach made a decision that Aaron believed was wrong. Aaron then took control and led the Teams successfully to the Pyramid. Once they arrived, a still-irritated Aaron complained, "Tell me you're not annoyed." The Teams, led by the athletic John Vito & Jill, climbed the Pyramid to discover they were heading to the San Marino Marina in Cancún.
Conceding that he should have listened to his son Andrew, Dennis also found himself lost on the way to the Pyramid. The pair found Teri & Ian, the married parents, who also took a wrong turn. The two Teams traveled together, although, with the sun already shining, Ian remarked, "These guys drive slow. We should have been there an hour ago." Upon arriving, they discovered friends Andre & Damon descending the Pyramid with the clue in hand. Having left the Pit Stop behind the other two Teams, the cop and fireman were ecstatic, shouting, "Dude we caught 'em!"
HIGH FLYING
As the other Teams made their way to Teotihuacán, brothers Derek & Drew decided they needed the Fast Forward to avoid last place. To win it, they had to travel to the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, where they would find the Voladores, a group of daredevil performers. The brothers would have to join the Voladores in the traditional stunt of climbing up a 100-foot pole and hanging by their feet, flying around the pole until they reached the ground.
When learning of what they had to do, Drew remarked, "This might be worse than skydiving." The pair put their fears aside, climbed the pole, and successfully "flew" with the Voladores. Winning the Fast Forward allowed Derek & Drew to skip all tasks and proceed directly to the next Pit Stop, the Diamante K Bungalows in the town of Tulum.
SOAKED
Teams took a 24-hour bus ride to Cancún to find their next route marker. Lead Teams Ken & Gerard, John Vito & Jill, Aaron & Arianne, Flo & Zach, Michael & Kathy and Heather & Eve got on the 10:00 am bus and made it to Cancún the following morning with no problems.
Lagging Teams Andre & Damon, Dennis & Andrew, Teri & Ian, Tramel & Talicia and Derek & Drew took the next bus, over three hours behind. In the middle of the night, their bus was involved in an accident when a car hit it. While nobody was hurt, everyone had to wait to change buses, causing them to fall further behind. As their replacement bus pulled onto the road, Tramel & Talicia confidently stated, "Team TNT: all we need is a spark and we'll blow the house down!"
The first group arrived at the San Marino Marina to find a Detour. Teams needed to search for one of two route markers in a lagoon using either "manpower" or "horsepower." Teams choosing "manpower" would have to use a kayak to search a specific area for the clue. Paddling would be more physically demanding, but the area to search was relatively small. Teams choosing "horsepower" would have to use a waverunner to search a different area for the clue. While operating the waverunner would take considerably less physical effort, the area to search was very large.
Flo & Zach had little difficulty finding the route marker using the waverunners, while Aaron & Arianne and Heather & Eve joined forces after losing their way in the massive lagoon. Michael & Kathy and Ken & Gerard both opted for the kayaks, encountering few difficulties. John Vito & Jill also chose the kayaks, only to switch after not being able to find the clue. As they were getting on the wavenrunner, John Vito remarked, "An hour and 23 minutes we wasted." They proceeded to quickly find the route marker in the lagoon.
The lead Teams all completed the task and landed their watercraft at the Las Velas Beach Club. From there, they had to drive 43 miles to a ferry that would transport them to the island of Cozumel. Once there, they needed to find Chankanaab Park and their next route marker.
As the first ferry to Cozumel left the dock, the second bus pulled into Cancún. While Derek & Drew rushed to the Pit Stop, the four Teams of Teri & Ian, Tramel & Talicia, Dennis & Andrew and Andre & Damon battled to avoid elimination. Teri & Ian and Tramel & Talicia both encountered problems in the water as they fell off their waverunners. On the way to the ferry, Ian said, "I'm afraid we're out of it, Teri, but we've just got to hang in there and fight."
SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS
From the first ferry, Aaron & Arianne took the lead to Chankanaab Park to encounter their first Roadblock. In a Roadblock, only one member of the Team can perform the task, in this case, a swim with a family of dolphins to find the next clue at the bottom of the lagoon.
While Heather & Eve both seemed excited by the prospect, Michael showed a little hesitation, but decided to swim for his Team. Unfortunately, Michael's swimming skills were a little weak as he struggled in the water, and he wondered if he could accomplish the task. To Kathy's delight, he overcame his fears and grabbed the clue. He later remarked, "I can't skydive. I can't kayak. I can't swim. But I can cook."
Flo & Zach and Aaron & Arianne continued to lead the Teams as they all completed the task. As they were getting off the ferry from Cozumel, Flo & Zach were very excited to see Andre & Damon, who were just getting on it, meaning they were at least two hours ahead of the lagging Teams. Dennis & Andrew and Teri & Ian soon followed, both knowing every second counted. Andrew said, "We're all neck and neck. It's making it very stressful." "It's competition, man," declared Andre & Damon as their taxi passed Teri & Ian's on the way to Chankanaab Park.
ELIMINATION
While driving to the Pit Stop, Derek & Drew got lost and began arguing over directions. Eventually, they managed to arrive in first place. Drew commented, "The other Teams are going to be really scared to see us up front now." Aaron & Arianne arrived in second place with their intentions firmly in place: "We are hell bent on getting the Doublemints out of here." Heather & Eve and Michael & Kathy soon followed to the finish mat, along with Flo & Zach, Ken & Gerard and John Vito & Jill in fifth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively.
The four last place Teams had the disadvantage of searching for the Diamante K Bungalows in the dark. Andrew remarked that there wasn't a street name, while Andre asked Damon if he saw any markers. Eventually, Andre & Damon made it to the Pit Stop in eighth place, followed by Dennis & Andrew in ninth. Teri & Ian rushed to the mat next, where Phil told them that they were the tenth Team to arrive, narrowly avoiding elimination. When Phil asked if they thought they could stay in the race until the end, Ian replied, "I hope so. I'm going to give it my best. Never throw in the towel."
Tramel & Talicia, hoping against hope, arrived to discover that they were the last Team. Tramel quipped, "I wasn't even listening. Tell us at the next Pit Stop. I hate to lose, but I had a great time while I was here. Wish I could stay with them longer. We had a blast." Talicia added, "The victory is not always in the win. Team TNT: we're all wet, no longer explosive, and we're signing out."
TWINS TAKE THE LEAD AS TEAM TNT FAILS TO IGNITE
At the beachfront Diamante K Bunglows in Tulum, Mexico, brother and sister Tramel & Talicia became the second Team to be eliminated from THE AMAZING RACE, while brothers Derek & Drew used the Fast Forward to claim first place.
