Recap, Episode 11: Manila, Philippines
RUNG BY RUNG Colin & Christie, departing the Pit Stop in first place at 4:56 am, opened their clue to discover they must drive 220 miles to the Westhaven Marina in the city of Auckland, New Zealand. Once there, they had to find the yacht marked "Hydroflow" and use the marked handles to lower their next clue. On his Team's abilities, Colin commented, "Christie and I feel confident there's no other Team that's stronger than us. Some of these other Teams make a lot of stupid mistakes." Leaving almost one and a half hours later, bowling moms Linda & Karen began the drive back to Auckland. Linda remarked, "We're in second place, but we're exhausted." Their fatigue manifested itself in an uncharacteristic fight between the two normally cheerful moms. Driver Linda shouted at navigator Karen, who didn't know the correct road to take. A frustrated Linda grabbed the map and asked, "Are you going to navigate, or do you want to drive? Because I can't do both!" With the departures of dating Christians Brandon & Nicole and Chip & Kim in third and last place, respectively, Colin & Christie entered the city limits of Auckland. Arriving at the Westhaven Marina, the pair pulled down their clue from the Hydroflow to discover a Roadblock. In this Roadblock, one Team member had to travel by boat to the Auckland Harbor Bridge and climb a 75-foot ladder to the girders beneath the roadway. Once there, balancing over the harbor, they must walk the narrow metal planks to the clue on the other side. After receiving the clue, they would be lowered down to their waiting partner in the boat below. Simply saying, "Let's do it," Colin began his ascent up the ladder towards the Harbor Bridge. As partner Christie shouted encouraging words, Colin deftly reached the top and nimbly walked across the girders of the bridge to receive the next clue. With the help of a harness, Colin stepped off the bridge, taking a wild ride back down to Christie inside the boat. Opening their clue, the dating couple learned they must fly 5,000 miles to the city of Manila in the Philippines. Once there, they had to travel to Malaguena Motors in the province of Cavite to find their next clue. As Colin & Christie dashed off to the airport, Brandon & Nicole arrived at the marina in second place, having passed the very lost Linda & Karen, who began to ask locals for directions to the harbor. As Nicole selected Brandon for the arduous climb, Chip & Kim pulled into the marina. Facing his fear of heights, Brandon tentatively climbed the ladder one rung at a time. On the girders, Brandon's strategy of not looking down paid off as he quickly got the clue and returned to Nicole in the boat. Brandon joked, "I was scared. I've done the catwalk before, but not like that." Arriving at the airport, Colin & Christie found a flight on Singapore Airlines that would get them into Manila at 8:20 pm that evening. With only 25 minutes before the plane took off, the dating couple raced to the Singapore Airlines offices, where they discovered the flight had been delayed, giving them enough time to purchase tickets and establish a huge lead over the other three Teams. Although the dating couple knew there was a slight risk due to a tight connection in Singapore, the reward they could reap would be well worth it. At the marina, Chip faced a seemingly insurmountable task as he slowly began his ascent up to the bridge, praying every step of the way. Taking baby steps along the girders, Chip continued his prayers, breathing a sigh of relief when he reached the clue, exclaiming, "Thank God!" During the boat ride back to shore, Chip & Kim crossed paths with Linda & Karen. Chip commented, "If the moms can do this, they're going to win the Race. I guarantee you the moms won't be able to do it." Trying to prove Chip wrong, Linda began her climb, instantly finding it to be incredibly taxing. Karen offered guidance as Linda slowly pulled herself to the girders above. At the top, Linda sighed, "I'm spaghetti," as she maneuvered across the metal frame of the bridge. Grabbing her clue, Linda faced her biggest challenge of the Roadblock when she panicked at the thought of jumping off the bridge to the boat below. Eventually mustering courage, she stepped off, emitting squeals of delight all the way down to Karen, who waited below. TOGETHER AGAIN At the airport, Chip & Kim joined Brandon & Nicole in the search for the fastest route to Manila. When Linda & Karen arrived, all three Teams booked a flight that would get them into Manila at 10 am the following morning, almost 14 hours later than Colin & Christie. Landing in Singapore behind schedule, Colin & Christie ran through the airport, desperate to make their connecting flight to Manila. Arriving at the gate, they were told the doors had already been closed. The disappointed pair, now believing they were behind everyone else, took a flight to Hong Kong, where they met up with the other three Teams the following morning. Together again, all four Teams boarded the same flight to Manila. Christie commented, "I wonder who was happiest to see who, because they were super excited that we were not already in Manila, and we're relieved because all the other Teams are on this exact same flight." USING THE YIELD Touching down in Manila, Chip & Kim took the early lead in a taxi out of the airport, followed by Brandon & Nicole and Linda & Karen. Exiting the airport in an unfamiliar last place, dating couple Colin & Christie tried to erase their deficit on the way to Malaguena Motors, but the other three Teams had one thing on their minds: using the Yield. In the taxi, Chip remarked, "Colin & Christie are like the Los Angeles Lakers. They are the best." Brandon added, "Everybody wants to see the most intense competition go." With Colin & Christie still in traffic, the other three Teams all arrived at Malaguena Motors, frantically searching for the Yield before the dating couple showed up. After Linda spotted the Yield sign, Chip & Kim stepped onto the mat and yielded Colin & Christie. Opening their next clue, the three Teams learned they had to decorate jeepneys, the most common form of public transportation in the Philippines and a remnant of American military presence in World War II. When properly decorated, the driver would award Teams with their next clue. The three Teams each set to work, affixing the brightly colored accessories to the jeepneys as Colin & Christie pulled up to Malaguena Motors. The dating couple appeared stunned as they ran to the Yield mat to see their faces on it, courtesy of Chip & Kim. Christie calmed an angered Colin by telling him to pay attention to the task the other Teams were performing so they could be prepared when the sand in the hour glass emptied, allowing them to continue. While Brandon & Nicole and Chip & Kim struggled to attach the correct pieces, Linda & Karen excelled at the task, attributing it to motherhood, and finished in first place. Opening their next clue, Linda & Karen learned they needed the driver of their colorfully decorated jeepney to take them 43 miles to the town of Victoria, the capital of the duck industry in the Philippines. They would find their next clue in a field behind a giant duck, a local icon. After the bowling moms finished, Brandon & Nicole and Chip & Kim followed, leaving Colin & Christie alone at Malaguena Motors. When their Yield waiting time was completed, the dating couple quickly began to assemble the pieces of the jeepney while sniping at each other. After completing the task, Colin & Christie urged their driver to go fast in hopes of catching the other three Teams. SPEED THE PLOW Arriving at the giant duck in first place, Linda & Karen, followed very closely by Brandon & Nicole, opened their clue to find a Detour. In this Detour, Teams had to choose between "Plow" and "Fowl." Teams choosing Plow had to choose a marked farm field and use an ox-drawn plow to till the soil and unearth a buried clue. While labor-intensive, the task involved an animal familiar with hard labor, so Teams could finish quickly. Teams opting for Fowl had to work together to herd 1,000 ducks from one pen to another, 50 yards away. The task was less strenuous, but controlling 1,000 animals that instinctively run away from people could be time-consuming. With both Teams choosing to plow the fields, Brandon and Karen took hold of their respective plows, while Nicole and Linda led their oxen through the muddy terrain. After plowing only several lengths of the field, Brandon & Nicole found their clue. Opening it, they discovered they must travel 120 miles back to Manila and find the next Pit Stop at the Coconut Palace, a building made almost entirely of coconut trees. Finishing almost as quickly, Linda & Karen joined Brandon & Nicole, and the two Teams took a bus to Manila. Arriving at the Detour in third place, Chip & Kim encountered difficulties plowing the field because Chip led the ox faster than Kim could plow. Eventually, the married parents found their clue and boarded a bus, relieved to still have a cushion between them and Colin & Christie. With the pressure on, Colin & Christie arrived at the giant duck in last place, opting to plow the field. Colin became heated, shouting, "My ox is broken" when his ox strayed off the field onto the grass. Shortening Colin's already short fuse, Christie, rather than walking into the mud to assist, only offered suggestions from the sideline, saying, "Listen to yourself. No wonder you can't control it. God, just plow." After more unsuccessful attempts at steering the ox, a furious Colin ordered Christie to walk through the mud to feel for the clue with her feet. With hesitation, Christie calmly did as she was told and immediately found the rope attached to the clue. Along the way to Manila, Colin & Christie got off their bus, and the pair found a taxi to drive them to Coconut Palace, knowing that they could make up time on the other Teams taking buses. RACE TO THE MAT Arriving in Manila in first place, Chip & Kim quickly found a taxi in the race to the Pit Stop. Departing their bus moments later, Brandon & Nicole snagged a taxi quickly, only to discover their driver was unfamiliar with the location of the Coconut Palace. Linda & Karen struggled to find a taxi on the streets of Manila, but when they did, it was worth the wait, as the driver knew where to go. Joining in the cab race to the Pit Stop, Colin & Christie were right behind the other Teams in the traffic of Manila. With all Teams in contention, it was married parents Chip & Kim who stepped onto the mat in first place at the Coconut Palace. Host Phil Keoghan informed the married parents they had won a vacation to beautiful Hawaii, compliments of American Airlines' website, AA.com. Bowling moms Linda & Karen repeated their success in New Zealand by again finishing in second place. In the end, dating couple Colin & Christie couldn't quite make up the deficit caused by the Yield, as they finished in last place behind Brandon & Nicole. The stunned, jubilant dating couple received a pardon from Phil, though, as this was the last of the pre-determined non-elimination legs. Stripped of all money, Colin & Christie remained in the Race. A tearful Christie remarked, "All I've wanted to do really is just run the Race until the very end." On his former allies, Colin added, "Having Chip & Kim Yield us was definitely an eye-opener. We trusted them, and they burned us. It's on." CHIP & KIM FIRST; COLIN & CHRISTIE DOWN, NOT OUT After three consecutive victories, dating couple Colin & Christie got a taste of last place in the Philippines after former allies married parents Chip & Kim used the yield on the dating couple. Furious at being betrayed by the married parents, Colin & Christie struggled to catch up, but ultimately their anger turned toward one another at a messy Detour on the outskirts of Manila. By using the Yield, Chip & Kim soared into first place, while Colin & Christie avoided elimination as this was the last of four pre-determined non-elimination legs. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race5/show/episode11/index.shtml
