Recap, Episode 11: Fort Lauderdale, USA
THE END OF THE AFFAIR Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 2:47 am, Rob & Amber discovered they must fly 4,600 miles to Kingston, Jamaica. After landing, they must travel over 90 miles to Port Antonio and find the beach known as Frenchman’s Cove to find their next clue. Arriving at the airport, Rob & Amber found the earliest flight, departing at 12:40 pm, on Air Jamaica. This allowed both Uchenna & Joyce and Ron & Kelly to catch up to the engaged couple and book the same flight. With several hours before boarding the flight to Jamaica, Kelly took the opportunity to discuss with Ron the future of their relationship, immediately hearing the words she dreaded most from him, “I don’t want to be married right now. I don’t want to make that commitment.” A tearful Kelly responded, “I love you, and that’s why I’m sad.” She added, “I’m not giving up on the Race because I want to win. I’m just sad about the relationship part of it. It just kind of breaks my heart.” ROADBLOCK: HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? Landing in Jamaica, Uchenna & Joyce took the early lead by arriving in first place at Frenchman’s Cove, where they encountered a Roadblock. For this Roadblock, one Team member had to participate in the traditional Jamaican party game called the Limbo. In this version, each rung of the limbo stick corresponded to a departure time from Frenchman’s Cove the next morning. Teams had eight chances to achieve the earliest time, 8:15 am. On the moonlit beach of the cove where tiki torches burned, Joyce slid easily under the limbo stick to earn a 9 am departure time. When Amber arrived and began the limbo because Rob had used up all his Roadblocks, the battle of flexibility began. As former dancer Kelly began the limbo for her Team, Joyce showed the first signs of faltering when she couldn’t get the 8:30 am departure, while Amber continued with no problems. On her fifth try, Amber secured the earliest departure, as did Kelly, but Joyce was unable to do it in eight tries and settled for an 8:30 am departure. All Teams had to make their way 11 miles to Grant’s Level high in the hills outside Port Antonio. DETOUR: RAFT IT OR BUILD IT The following morning at 8:15, Rob & Amber and Ron & Kelly left Frenchman’s Cove and arrived at Grant’s Level moments apart. Opening their clue, the two Teams found a Detour. This Detour offered Teams the choice between “Raft It” and “Build It.” For Raft It, Teams had to travel eight miles down the Rio Grande on a traditional bamboo raft, using only a pole to steer. Build It required Teams to build a bamboo raft using all parts correctly. Once they completed it, Teams must use the raft to cross the river; their next clue waited atop a hill on the other side. Believing that eight miles was far too long to travel on the slow-moving river, both Teams opted to build the raft. As Ron & Kelly’s relationship continued to show signs of deterioration, Rob & Amber worked together in hopes of taking the lead. Arriving soon after, Uchenna & Joyce were determined to make up lost time from the limbo competition, saying, “We’re gonna catch up real quick. We just wanna be smart about this.” The married couple’s ability to work efficiently without arguing helped them easily pass the bickering Ron & Kelly. At one point, after Kelly sniped at Ron, he responded, “The last time I built one of these was, oh, never. So relax.” With Rob & Amber having to adjust a slight problem with their raft, Uchenna & Joyce correctly constructed theirs first, quipping, “Gilligan should have been watching this.” After fixing their problem, Rob & Amber and Uchenna & Joyce raced their rafts across the river to get their next clue. Neck and neck, both Teams returned to shore and opened their clue to discover they must travel 80 miles by taxi to Montego Bay and find the Pit Stop at Round Hill, a 100-acre coconut and spice plantation. DEFLATED Getting an early jump, Uchenna & Joyce told their cab driver to go as fast as possible because engaged couple Rob & Amber were in close pursuit. After all the bickering, Ron & Kelly completed their raft, but now found themselves in last place in a taxi race to the Pit Stop. However, the pair caught a huge break when both Uchenna & Joyce’s and Rob & Amber’s drivers had to stop for gas, making the competition a three-way race. Uchenna & Joyce laughed when Rob & Amber got pulled over at a police checkpoint, forcing them into third place, but the joke was on first-place Uchenna & Joyce when their taxi got a flat tire. As the married couple waited on the roadside, they watched both Teams pass them by. In a footrace to the mat, Ron & Kelly narrowly edged out engaged couple Rob & Amber to win the leg. Arriving in last place, Uchenna & Joyce surrendered all their money and belongings to Phil. At the prospect of starting the final leg with absolutely nothing, Uchenna optimistically remarked, “The two things they haven’t take from us are our hearts and our minds.” CHOPPING AWAY Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 2:37 am, Ron & Kelly learned they must pick up a bag containing 50 onions at a shack 25 miles away in the city of Lucea. Next, they must go to a kitchen shack and chop them up to earn their next clue. Although a lost taxi driver for Ron & Kelly allowed engaged couple Rob & Amber to arrive at the kitchen shack first, both Teams chopped away, hoping to take the lead. Ultimately, Rob & Amber won the onion-chopping battle and opened their next clue, which instructed them travel by taxi 60 miles to Rose Hall Great House Resort, a former plantation house. Meanwhile, Uchenna & Joyce, with no money at all, found someone to take them to the airport free of charge. At the airport, the married couple’s pleas for money fell on deaf ears, driving a frustrated Joyce to tears. After consoling his wife, Uchenna continued his pleas to airport patrons, finally collecting enough money to get them to the kitchen shack. DETOUR: PONY UP OR TEE IT UP As Uchenna & Joyce chopped onions, the first-place battle continued between Rob & Amber and Ron & Kelly as both Teams arrived at Rose Hall. Opening their clue, the Teams found their last Detour. In this Detour, Teams had to choose between “Pony Up” and “Tee It Up.” For Pony Up, Teams must participate in a local sport, horseback swimming, by riding a horse into the ocean. Once their horse started swimming, the racers must slide off and hold onto its tail as the horse swam around buoys and headed back to shore. Tee It Up required Teams to don golf apparel and head to the driving range, where they must hit a golf ball into a 16-foot area 140 yards away to earn their next clue. With both Teams opting to hit golf balls, the race for first place continued. Each racer of the quartet had their difficulties in hitting the ball period, let alone onto the green 140 yards away, but eventually Rob landed a winning shot, as did Kelly soon after. Opening their clues, the Teams discovered they must fly 800 miles to San Juan, Puerto Rico, then drive nine miles to the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro Fort. Getting to the airport narrowly ahead of Ron & Kelly, Rob & Amber secured a flight giving them a three-hour lead over the former POW and pageant queen. THE COMEBACK Landing in San Juan, engaged couple Rob & Amber arrived at the fort and opened their next clue, which instructed them to drive 87 miles to the town of Aguadilla and find an abandoned sugar factory. The couple’s joy at having a sizable lead over the other Teams turned to frustration when they learned that the sugar factory wouldn’t open until 7:30 the next morning. This allowed both Ron & Kelly and Uchenna & Joyce to arrive at the factory later that evening. On finally being caught up, Uchenna exclaimed, “We’re back in this thing!” The next morning at 7:30 am, the three Teams ran into the factory with a million dollars on the line. Opening their clue, the Teams found their last Roadblock. For this Roadblock, one Team member must jump off of a 30-foot bridge and swim 90 yards to retrieve the next clue. While Amber couldn’t find the bridge, Ron quickly took the frightening plunge, followed by Uchenna. Opening their clues, the Teams discovered they must fly 1,000 miles to Miami, Florida. After landing, Teams must travel nine miles by taxi to the Rickenbacker Causeway for their next clue. TAKING FLIGHT On the way to the airport, first place Ron & Kelly took a wrong turn, pushing them into third place and prompting another fight between the feuding couple. Meanwhile, Rob & Amber, having caught up, arrived first at the airport and booked a flight departing in a matter of minutes. While Rob & Amber sat on the plane waiting to leave, Uchenna & Joyce begged the ticket agents to let them on. In their first bit of good fortune, the married couple managed to stop the plane from taking off and boarded, seeing the disappointed faces of Rob & Amber. After the two Teams headed to Miami, Ron & Kelly arrived at the airport to book a flight departing over an hour later. LOST Landing in Miami, Rob & Amber took an early lead, arriving at the Rickenbacker Causeway in first place. Opening their clue, the pair discovered they must travel over two miles to Little Havana and find the King of the Havanas Cigar Shop, known by its Spanish name, El Rey de los Habanos, for their next clue. Soon, Rob & Amber’s slim lead over Uchenna & Joyce began to melt away as the engaged couple couldn’t find the cigar shop. Meanwhile, Uchenna & Joyce had no difficulties finding the shop but became concerned about the increasing meter in their taxi. Walking into the shop, Uchenna & Joyce opened the final clue of the Race, instructing them to travel to Fort Lauderdale, find the Bonnet House, and follow the marked path to the finish line. An excited Uchenna said, “This is it! We’re going to the finish!” As Rob & Amber, after much frustration, finally found the cigar shop, Uchenna & Joyce realized they didn’t have enough money to pay for their taxi to the Bonnet House. Promising to make up the difference, Uchenna & Joyce arrived in the residential area of the Bonnet House and, after unsuccessfully offering a ring to the driver, began asking locals for money. A worried Joyce said of Rob & Amber, “We can’t let them beat us like this.” Concerned over their prospects, Uchenna added, “This is going to be hard. We’ve been begging for two days.” THE WINNERS With Rob & Amber en route to the Bonnet House and potentially a million dollars, the panicked Uchenna & Joyce started raising some money, now needing only $25 more. Not wanting to stiff the taxi driver, the pair persevered, asking a few more people, and raised the necessary funds. Running through the marked path where the eight eliminated Teams waited breathlessly with Phil, an ecstatic Uchenna & Joyce ran onto the platform, where Phil officially crowned them the winners of THE AMAZING RACE. A stunned Uchenna remarked, “This is a life-changing experience.” Stepping on the mat in second place, engaged couple Rob & Amber reflected on their experience. Rob remarked, “We finished second, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I got Amber, so I’m in first place in my book.” Coming in third place, Ron & Kelly discussed their tumultuous relationship. Kelly commented, “I think we’re on different paths right now. I would love more than anything for it to work out, but time will just tell.” Winner Uchenna commented on his partner and wife, saying, “I’ve never been more proud of Joyce than I am now. She’s overcome great fears. We’ve overcome communication barriers. We can talk now, which is really nice. We’re looking forward to those things helping us grow more and more together.” Joyce added, “I love him so much. I’m just lucky to have him.” UCHENNA & JOYCE WIN THE AMAZING RACE After suffering a flat tire and being stripped of all their money and possessions, married couple Uchenna & Joyce battled back from last place to win THE AMAZING RACE and the $1 million prize. Engaged couple Rob & Amber, who suffered a huge blow when Uchenna & Joyce got tickets on their flight to Miami at the last moment, took second place after becoming lost in Little Havana. A wrong turn heading to the airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico forced former POW and pageant queen Ron & Kelly to take a later flight to Miami, resulting in a third-place finish. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race7/show/ep11/race/story/
