Rambling on About Leg 6
Leg 6 starts of with…bunching! Ray/Deana’s 2-hour lead over Ron/Kelly (not to mention the 5-hour lead over last-place Meredith/Gretchen) evaporates as the teams have to wait until morning to catch the first of 2 safari shuttles into the Lion Reserve. The first group feeds the lions and get their clues and heat toward the next task, flying to Gaborone, Botswana. The second group, which starts out one hour later, seems to be doing fine as well, as Rob/Amber and Meredith/Gretchen get lazy and decide to follow Lynn/Alex to the airport. Joyce, however, is paying attention to the map and she directs Uchenna in the opposite direction. They end up getting on the same flight to Botswana as the first group of lion feeders. Had the other teams paid better attention, they too would have made the early flight (unless it sold out). As it was, they have to wait an hour and a half for the next flight. Lynn/Alex also got lost a second time, missing the turn to the airport and ending up in Johannesburg. The editors are continuing to showcase the rivalry between Lynn/Alex and Rob/Amber. The first time I’ve really seen Rob irritated was when they wouldn’t let him and Amber on their taxi. It was awfully big for a taxi, but apparently that’s what it was. For me, it just highlighted the hypocrisy and hatefulness of Lynn/Alex. They are making it personal, where Rob is simply racing. As Lynn/Alex said, if it had been anyone else they would have let them on. So, in their hatred, they behave exactly as they criticize Rob/Amber of behaving. It ends up not being a problem for anyone, however, as there is more bunching up of the groups as they wait for the 9:00 pm train to take them to Francistown, where they have to find the giant statue of an aardvark, and the next Roadblock. One team member has to throw a traditional spear approximately 20 feet at a swinging sack of sand or something. Once they hit the target and the spear stays attached, they get the next clue, which leads to the next Detour. Poor Meredith can’t find the bushmen, and the bushmen are watching him wander around a bit before he finally figures it out. Brian finished just ahead of Ron, but Ron/Kelly beat Brian/Greg onto the road. Lynn does a pretty good job, finishing 3rd, though he looked a lot closer than 20 feet to me. Ray did okay, but lost a lot of time here. Joyce was the only woman to do the roadblock, and she finished 5th. She and Uchenna were in good shape until they lost their backpacks. They ended up leaving last, even though Rob was the last one to hit his target. On the way to the Detour, Brian manages to flip and roll the land rover they are in. One of their cameramen is hurt, and they have to wait for a new vehicle to arrive. Lynn/Alex are the first team to come across the scene, apparently shortly after it happens. Kudos to them for checking on Brian/Greg while each of the other teams pass on by, though it seems apparent that no one is seriously hurt. After getting their replacement vehicle, Brian and Greg join the others at the Detour, though by that time only two teams remain. At the Detour, everyone but Rob/Amber & Brian/Greg chooses to grind the corn with the sticks. Lynn is eager to tell Ron/Kelly and anyone else who will listen how evil Rob/Amber are for not stopping at the crash site. Kelly tells Ron that “Rob and Amber to not deserve.” Deserve what? To win? The money? Did she win her beauty crown because she deserved it or did she have to work hard and earn it? Filling up the ostrich eggs by using a hollow reed to siphon water from an underground spring sounds nuts, but it appears to be way faster and much less physical than grinding the corn. Poor Deana hit herself with her stick once, and then got hit by Ray later on! Brian/Greg finish their task slightly behind Ray/Deana. What follows is possibly the best finish to a leg that I have seen in The Amazing Race. Brian & Greg roar into a parking place beside Ray/Deana as they are getting out of their rover. As the footrace to the finish mat begins, Deana is actually in the lead. However, Brian and Greg quickly pass her and then outrun Ray to the mat and narrowly escape elimination. The best finish to a leg for us, the viewer, is probably the worst finish to a leg for the ones being eliminated. I know if it had been me, I would have probably been throwing a fit and possibly crying! Losing sucks, and that was the worst way to lose, just watching the other team pass you by and not being able to do anything about it. Still, Ray’s comment, “Meredith and Gretchen, to me, are sacrificial lambs” and Deana’s incredulous attitude when M/G finished the last Detour ahead of them, makes me feel nary an ounce of concern for their departure. Final finishing order: 1. Ron/Kelly 2. Rob/Amber 3. Uchenna/Joyce 4. Lynn/Alex 5. Meredith/Gretchen 6. Brian/Greg 7. Ray/Deana -- ELIMINATED
