October 25: This Time, Somebody Has to Go Dancing with the Stars 3, October 25: This Time, Somebody Has to Go
by Jill Jones -- 10/26/2006
Last night on Dancing with the Stars, our couples performed a Latin and ballroom dance. Everyone did exceptionally well, but as we know, one dancing duo will leave the competition tonight. Join Jill now as we make the journey to find out which couple that is.
Before we begin, I want to thank Benita and Beto for identifying the song that Cheryl and Emmitt danced the mambo to. The name of the piece is “Qué Bueno Baila Usted.” Next, I want to apologize if I’m cranky. My faithful companion Yoko is being a bit standoffish, so I don’t think she’ll be very helpful if the judges or results upset me. I’ll just pop a few M&Ms with peanuts to take the edge off.
Tom and Samantha welcome us, and tease us with the promise of a former Dancing with the Stars champion returning to perform. Hmmmmmmm! Since we’re only in season three, this might be easy to figure out. They also walk us through clips from last night’s show. If you missed it, you can read our recap.
Next, Tom and Samantha very kindly review the current standings:
RANKING STAR SCORE
1 Mario 84
2 Emmitt 82
3 Joey 81
4 Monique 77
5 Jerry 64
It’s now time for the encore presentation. Len informs us that Cheryl and Emmitt have been selected by the judges to dance their mambo. Excellent! Once again, the performance is energetic and Emmitt seems to have a wonderful time on the dance floor. I don’t want to take anything away from the importance of executing the dance moves correctly, but even if Emmitt doesn’t always do a perfect job, he is a joy to watch; he clearly enjoys himself and to me, that is sometimes more important than form and technique.
Martina McBride is now ready to sing “This One’s for the Girls” while a variety of dancers perform. The dancing is great, but it can’t compare to our celebrities and their professional partners.
Samantha is backstage with some of the couples. Emmitt explains that the goober he received from Len was unexpected. Monique says that she is fine with not getting a goober; she also gives credit to those couples who did. Jerry tells us that if he adds all of his scores together, then he’ll get a goober. Samantha doesn’t even know what to say. (Thank you, Jerry.)
The audience is ready with their comments. A certain perky host of a cooking show and daytime talk show (I’m not giving away any more free advertising to the stars in the audience) says that Emmitt should have gotten 30 points for his samba. One woman wants to rub Joey’s bald head. Get in line, honey.
Tom and Samantha are ready to reveal the first two couples moving on to next week’s competition. Karina and Mario are safe, as are Cheryl and Emmitt.
A group of Maksim’s students are performing the cha cha cha to “Billie Jean.” The dancers do a wonderful job. Their moves are crisp and polished. The men even work in a moonwalk.
Samantha asks Mario about feeling the pressure from the other couples. He says that he’s felt it from day one. Emmitt explains that he and Cheryl try their best every week. He also smiles and says he was proud of his performance last night.
It’s time to check in with Tysonia as she takes on the Slim·Fast Dance Challenge. Christian takes her to meet the celebrities and professional dancers from the show. Tysonia even gets dipped by Maksim. She then performs the paso doble on the street for a group of strangers. As always, the producers don’t show much of the action, but one thing that is noticeable is how much Tysonia is slimming down.
Martina is back to perform “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden.” Edyta dances with her partner and season one professional champion Alec Mazo. OK, producers. You fooled me. I thought that Kelly Monaco or Drew Lachey were back. In any case, I was wrong, but one thing that’s right is this performance. I forgot how handsome Alec is. He and Edyta do a great job. Their moves are so sharp and sexy without being over the top.
The next series of filler is a bit confusing. It goes from a discussion about how the men are dominating the program, to looking manly, to rubbing Joey’s head again. Let’s just leave it at that while I pop a few more M&Ms.
The stars from seasons one and two explain to us that it is difficult to learn two dances. Lisa Rinna tells us that at one point, she and Louis hated each other because of the stress. Jerry Rice says that if you can do the first dance, you’ll be fine with the second one.
Samantha instructs us to go to www.abc.com for information on the Dancing with the Stars live tour. The live tour? I had heard a rumor about this, but didn’t know it if was anything more than that until now. Sigh. I just checked the web site and the show is not scheduled for a city near me. I might have to take a road trip.
It’s now time to find out who else is moving on in the competition. Kym and Jerry are in the bottom two, but Edyta and Joey are advancing. That’s great news, but unfortunately, it means that Monique and Louis are now on the chopping block.
Tom and Samantha are finally ready to end the suspense for us. The couple with the lowest overall score is… Kym and Jerry.
The crowd begins to chant for Jerry as Monique hugs Louis. (Hold on tightly to him, woman.) Tom points out that the Jerry we saw on the show wasn’t the Jerry that everyone expected. As Jerry answers questions, he gets choked up; it is such a heartfelt moment. Kym is really a doll; she says that Jerry was the nicest man she ever met. She also gives him props for doing as well as he did. He then says that if he and his wife ever had another daughter, it would be Kym.
Kym and Jerry perform one last dance together. (He wants her to dance with someone else though… as if he’s not worthy.) It is at this point in the program that the eliminations become difficult to watch. Everyone has formed such amazing relationships; it’s sad to see this part of those connections end.
Another show has ended; another couple has been eliminated. Join me next week as we watch the remaining couples take on two more dances. In the meantime, I think I’ll eat a few more M&Ms in honor of Jerry, who was just as sweet.
