Dancing with the Stars 3, October 24: Double-Dance by Jill Jones -- 10/25/2006 Last week on Dancing with the Stars, the couples performed a variety of different routines. After the scores were calculated, nobody was eliminated from the competition due to Sara Evans’ unexpected departure. Tonight, everyone will perform two routines: one ballroom dance and one Latin dance. Just thinking about it makes me tired. Let’s see how this plays out! Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris welcome us to the program and introduce the couples. I’m going to miss typing that when the season ends. The first couple up is Kym Johnson and Jerry Springer. Jerry explains that he is going to be serious. He also tells us that he wants to respect dancing this week. They are doing the foxtrot to “My Way.” Jerry makes a few small mistakes with his footwork, but his posture isn’t bad at all. He doesn’t execute a lot of complicated moves during the routine, but overall, the dance is beautiful. The music and gentleness of the couple’s movements are calming, yet entertaining. Len Goodman tells Jerry that he did a great job. Bruno Tonioli says that the performance was a miracle. Carrie Ann Inaba explains that she appreciates Jerry’s approach this week; however, she could tell he was lacking in confidence. She wants him to be more secure during his next performance. All three judges give the dance an eight; Kym and Jerry have 24 points. Jerry jokingly mumbles about having to dance again. Monique Coleman and Louis Van Amstel are now ready. Before practice, Louis invites Monique’s friend Ashley Tisdale from High School Musical over for a girls’ day. Louis follows along as they shop. They’re performing the quickstep to “Luck be a Lady.” Monique and Louis look the part as they take to the dance floor. Anyone who has read my articles in the past knows that the camera work normally annoys me; this season is no different. When Monique and Louis do their first quick run, the camera shot is blocked by the audience. They certainly cover the dance floor though. At the end of the routine, they move to the top of the stage and dance. Louis has trouble holding Monique on their last pose; he is probably thinking of me and became distracted. Bruno says that the wild child turned into a lady tonight and listened to the judges’ previous critiques. Carrie Ann tells Monique that the dance was her best; if it weren’t for a small stumble, Monique would get a goober. Len makes a rhyme and says that the performance was dynamite. Each judge gives Monique and Louis a nine for a total of 27 points. When asked about her age, Monique says that it won’t help her in the competition now that everyone is doing two dances per evening; others have experience. Up now are Cheryl Burke and Emmitt Smith. Cheryl states that Emmitt is a man. Prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! The two of them share some spa time together. Emmitt declares that the waltz is boring. The couple is doing the waltz to “Hushabye Mountain.” Emmitt looks incredibly light on his feet for being a big guy… a big, handsome, strapping guy. He is also very in-sync with Cheryl’s moves. As always, she does a fantastic job with her choreography. Emmitt ends the dance by kissing Cheryl’s hand. All I got tonight from my boyfriend was a Swedish fish. That’s OK though; he’s a great guy! Carrie Ann tells Emmitt that he nailed the waltz; she was mesmerized by it. Len states that Emmitt amazed him with his softness. Bruno describes the dance as smooth and romantic. Carrie Ann gives the performance a goober, while Len and Bruno give it a nine. Cheryl and Emmitt have 28 points. Emmitt says, “Wow!” Cheryl expresses her happiness in Emmitt’s efforts. Our next performers are Karina Smirnoff and Mario Lopez. Karina tries to teach Mario both dances for this week at the same time. Mario has a small meltdown. Mario introduces us to his niece who was born about the same time that Dancing with the Stars started this season. Awwwwww! They are dancing the foxtrot to “I Want to be Loved by You.” Again, the couple looks the part; Karina is even sporting a blonde wig. The routine is playful; Karina even makes her way to the judges’ table to blow them a kiss. Mario walks his fingers down her arm. Hey, she’s not the Yellow Pages. Mario also ends the dance by kissing Karina’s hand. The performance is solid and elegant; I think I like Mario’s Latin dances better though. Bruno says that the dance was delicious. Carrie Ann tells Mario that he made his niece proud. Len says that he loved the performance, but wonders why there was a basic element missing from it. I failed to catch what it was, so whatever it is, it is certainly being neglected tonight. Len gives the dance a nine, and Carrie Ann and Bruno give it a goober. Mario says he can’t believe he and Karina received 29 points; he has trouble with some of the dances because he is so hyper. Edyta Sliwinska and Joey Lawrence are ready to perform. Joey even gets a chance to show off his tap dancing skills. He and Edyta make their way to the steps on the stage and perform there as well. The dance ends with the couple sitting on the steps with an umbrella. Len informs Joey that he did a great job. He then mentions something about balls. Oh, he’s talking about the balls of his feet. Whew! Bruno says the dance was beautifully performed. Carrie Ann, who is full of love tonight, tells Joey that the dance was flawless. Once again, Len gives the dance a nine; Carrie Ann and Bruno give it a goober. Edyta and Joey have 29 points. Joey is thrilled and appreciative. I’m stuffed from all of the goobers that have been given out. Kym and Jerry are ready with their second dance of the evening. They are now doing the mambo to “Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy.” Jerry does a lot of shimmying and butt shaking. He also looks like he is dressed for a cruise; the outfit is quite charming and cute on him though. Basically, the routine isn’t executed perfectly, but Jerry is trying his best tonight. He’s really into the moves and gives the dance his all. Carrie Ann says that Jerry isn’t on the same level of the others, but he is a joy to watch. Len gives Jerry props for doing two dances this week. He also says that he doesn’t care if Jerry can’t dance as well as the other stars; he’s doing a great job. Bruno states that he doesn’t think the public is ready to eliminate Jerry yet. Jerry asks if he can just do some comedy bits between performances. Backstage, Kym tells Samantha she is very proud of Jerry. Only this program could show us the vulnerable side of Jerry Springer. It’s amazing. Carrie Ann and Bruno give the routine a seven. Len gives it an eight. Kym and Jerry have earned 22 points for their Latin performance. The next couple to take the dance floor is Monique and Louis. For their second dance, they are doing the paso doble to “The Reflex.” Monique works her skirt throughout the performance. She also has some great footwork and beautiful posture. Again, Louis almost drops her. Really, I must be on his mind. Len tells Louis that he put together two wonderful dances tonight and that Monique did a great job. Bruno says a lot; what it comes down to is that he feels Monique’s performance was wonderful. Carrie Ann says that Monique overpowered herself at the end of the dance, but she still did a great job. All three judges give the performance a nine. Monique and Louis receive 27 points for their Latin dance. Up now are Cheryl and Emmitt. They’re performing the mambo to a song that I recognize, but don’t know. It is performed in Spanish and my Spanish is a bit rusty. I can still order a beer in a Costa Rican bar though! Emmitt is shaking body parts that I shouldn’t even think about; this is really his dance. The steps are crisp and the routine is feisty. He smiles the entire time and works it. I lost five pounds just watching him and Cheryl move. The crowd goes crazy over the dance. Bruno says the beast has been unleashed. Carrie Ann calls Emmitt “Sir Shimmy.” She also states that everyone was pumped up by the dance. Len says that Emmitt’s performance was his favorite of the season. Carrie Ann and Len give the couple a goober. Bruno gives it a nine; he is then promptly booed by the crowd. Cheryl and Emmitt say it is OK; they are happy with 29 points. Karina and Mario are set to perform again. They’re doing the jive to “Shake a Tail Feather.” The dance is energetic and Mario’s footwork is incredible. The movements that Karina and Mario perform are also sharp. Mario does a great job keeping up with Karina. Carrie Ann says that Karina and Mario were in sync throughout the performance. Len says that the dance had vitality; his only problem is with the way Mario holds Karina sometimes. Bruno agrees and explains that Mario’s arm occasionally flops around. All three judges give the dance a nine. Karina and Mario have 27 points. The last couple to perform tonight is Edyta and Joey. They are doing the mambo to “Mambo Number Five.” That makes sense to me. The routine is playful and sexy. There is a lot of hip action and sharp movements. Edyta and Joey maintain the quick pace throughout the routine. Carrie Ann explains to Joey that he finally loosened up and she enjoyed his performance. Bruno gives Joey credit for his arm turns. Len reveals a lot by saying he’s impressed with Joey’s hips. Carrie Ann and Len give Edyta and Joey a nine. Bruno gives them a goober. Joey is happy for the score; he and Edyta earned 28 points.
