November 1: Let's Swop
Dancing with the Stars 3, November 1: Let's Swop by Jill Jones -- 11/02/2006 Results show time, which means it's time to trim the field from four talented celebrities to three. Who will make it to the semi-finals? Plus, the ever-present filler, including a new dance called... the Swop? Find out what it is, inside! Last night, on a very spooky edition of Dancing with the Stars, our couples did a variety of Latin and ballroom dances. A lot of goobers were handed out, but after everything was said and done, Monique and Louis were in last place. Let’s watch the show and find out if their time is up! Tom and Samantha begin the program by reviewing the previous night’s action. Instead of listening to them, read my recap. Next, they go over the current standings: RANKING STAR SCORE 1 Mario 57 2 Joey 54 2 Emmitt 54 4 Monique 53 Len informs us that he, Carrie Ann, and Bruno selected Monique and Louis to perform their cha cha cha as the encore performance. I’m not disappointed since I’d watch Louis dance any day of the week, but I am surprised about the choice; while this dance received a lot of praise for the couple, it wasn’t the best dance overall for the night. In any case, Monique seems more relaxed tonight as she performs. Perhaps she figures she has nothing to lose at this point. At the end of the dance, Louis lands on her again and won’t let her up. Stop fighting it, Monique! Willa Ford is back. She sings “Fame” for our listening pleasure while some of the professional dancers perform. The routine starts out a bit sleazy as the men rub up against her. Seriously. If this continues, Yoko will have to go to another room like she did last night. Samantha is backstage with the celebrities. Monique explains that she was happy about the goobers she received, but emotional as well. Emmitt says something, but I don’t hear him; I just look at his smile. Joey says that he and Edyta plan to keep it going. Mario states that he doesn’t know what it is going to take to get a triple goober. The audience members give us their thoughts and opinions. One man says that everyone wants Mario… men and women. Joey’s brothers comment on Edyta’s sexy costume. And I know I said I wasn’t giving the celebrities in the audience free advertising, but I have to break that rule. Suzanne Whang from HGTV is here. If you don’t know anything about Suzanne, you should Google her; she’s a fascinating person and very multi-dimensional. Its time to find out who is advancing to the semi-finals…at least one couple any way. Tom and Samantha inform us that Cheryl and Emmitt are moving on. Hooray! Dance champions Anna Mikhed and Victor Fung perform a beautiful routine while Il Divo sings “Without You.” After last night’s monster mash, the music and dance seem so refined. It is quite enjoyable. Samantha bugs Cheryl and Emmitt backstage. Basically, she asks a question and then rushes them through an answer. Tysonia catches us up on the Slim—Fast Dance Challenge. Christian informs her that she is going to do the rumba in a dance competition. At first, she seems thrilled. However, her excitement turns into nervousness and she cries. This is low… really low. The producers take us to a commercial break before we find out what happens with Tysonia. I guess the rest of her story will be shown next week. A group of dancers now perform SWOP, a fusion of swing and hip-hop. The routine is interesting and energetic, but I have a feeling that Len is not enjoying it since it is anything but conventional. Who knows though? I could be wrong. He may be swopping later. The celebrities and professionals talk strategy for the finals. They get to choose their dances and music. Monique says she might go with a dance that she didn’t perform well. Mario expresses an interest in a dance style that pleased the crowd before. Goody. The judges review each couples strengths and weaknesses. Lens says that Emmitt is funky, but should work on his footwork and posture. Bruno explains that Monique carries herself beautifully; Carrie Ann thinks that she is disconnected. Bruno comments positively on Joey’s execution, while Carrie Ann says that he is sometimes stiff. Len claims that Mario is the most talented; Carrie Ann feels that he forgets about fluidity. Tom and Samantha prepare to reveal another couple that is moving on. Much to their delight, Edyta and Joey have advanced. Joey is thrilled. After a commercial break, Tom tells us that the couple eliminated from the competition is… Monique and Louis; this means that Karina and Mario have made it to the semi-finals. Monique’s mom walks right up to her and gives her a hug. Production be damned! I love it! Monique thanks everyone for voting. Louis tells Monique that she is an inspiration; she always tried the moves and dances that he put together instead of saying she couldn’t do it. Monique tells Louis that he will be a friend of hers forever. Clips of the couple are shown. Yoko and I tear up. The couple dances one last time and Monique’s mom joins them. I like her! As much as I enjoyed this couple, it was time for them to go. Monique and Louis should be proud of what they accomplished. Not only did they do a great job every week, but they also proved that doing your best is sometimes more impressive than anything else. With that, Monique and MY Louis are done. Join me next week as we move one step closer to finding out who wins the coveted disco ball trophy and the title of Dancing with the Stars champion.
