May 3rd Episode Summary Our 4 teams began this leg in Istanbul, Turkey. Their first clue told them to go to the Sirkeci Train Station where they would have to pass through whirling dervishes to get their second clue.
Departure times were as follows:
10:53 pm Uchenna & Joyce
11:57 pm Meredith & Gretchen
12:37 pm Rob & Amber
12:5_ pm Ron & Kelly – because they had finished last in a non-elimination leg, they had only the clothes on their backs and their passports; the other teams received $377.00 for the leg. Ron and Kelly were fortunate to find someone willing to give them money and a cab driver willing to take them to the airport for what seemed like less than the usual rate. Ron was amused by the fact that Kelly would no longer have make-up or fresh changes of clothing.
At the train station the teams saw the whirling dervishes with their beautiful white skirts(?) twirling. Uchenna & Joyce deemed them “cool” and “magical” while Gretchen thought they were “wonderful” and Kelly called them “a dream”. Rob & Amber didn’t know what whirling dervishes were and when they saw them, Amber’s reaction was “spooky”.
The second clue told teams they were to “Fly to London, England” and find the “zebra crossing” that was immortalized on a Beatles album cover (i.e. the street crossing in front of Abbey Road Studio).
When teams got to the airport, they all found that there was a direct flight at 8:30 am which would get them into London at 10:30. Uchenna & Joyce and Meredith & Gretchen decided the best bet was to stay with a direct flight rather than risk problems with connecting flights. Meredith commented that “On this flight, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
This was a costly decision.
Rob got access to the Internet to look for alternative flights. When he had obtained the information he wanted, he told the employee, “Don’t let anyone else use the internet”. Why do so many people help this guy?? Rob & Amber and Ron & Kelly found out that there was a flight connecting in Frankfurt, Germany that could get them to London at 9:00. They were told that the connecting flight was booked but they were put on standby. They knew it was a risk and that missing the connection could be costly but they decided to go for it. Kelly then asked the ticket agent to borrow her lipstick and the woman complied. I guess I’m no beauty queen because it would not have occurred to me to ask a strange woman if I could use her make-up.
Once the first plane arrived in Frankfurt, there was a footrace between the two teams to get to the ticket counter to try and get on the connecting flight. Both teams made the connection.
In London, teams found out that needed to take the Heathrow Express at Paddington Station. Rob & Amber get on the first train and find themselves a man named Stuart who is willing to be their guide. Ron & Kelly paused to beg people for money and did not get on the same train as Rob & Amber. Ron’s comment was “Thank God we’re in a country where people actually speak English.” In England?? I would hope so!
When teams got to the Abbey Road Studio they got their next clue which told them to go to the London Eye and scan the skyline to find a flag at the location of their next clue. The London Eye is a British Airways millennium observation wheel that looks like a ferris wheel with enclosed capsules that allow for a 360° view. Rob’s comment as they begin looking for the flag is, “This is gonna be tough; it’s so foggy.”
Once teams locate the next clue box, they find a Detour. Option 1 is “Brains” in which teams take the Underground (London’s subway) and must solve 3 riddles which leads them to 221B Baker St. where fictional detective Sherlock Holmes supposedly resided. Option 2 is “Brawn” in which teams travel 1½ miles to get five 165 pound boats and transport and stack them to get their next clue from the boatmaster.
When Uchenna & Joyce and Meredith & Gretchen get to London, they find out that the other two teams are 2 hours ahead of them. They take taxis to get to Abbey Road and pass Buckingham Palace on their way. Gretchen is happy to have seen that and Joyce is busy appreciating all of the architecture.
Rob & Amber and Ron & Kelly take Option 1. Once they find all the clues from the riddles, they go to the Sherlock Holmes Museum and find they must then go to the Millennium Dome where a yield is available. Rob & Amber take the Underground to get there and Ron & Kelly take a cab. The Underground is faster so Rob & Amber get to the yield first. They debate yielding Uchenna & Joyce but opt to yield Ron & Kelly instead. Then they find they must complete a Roadblock. The roadblock requires a team member to drive a double-decker bus without hitting a cone and then back it into a parking space. If they hit a cone, they must start over. Rob does this roadblock. It takes him four attempts. Ron & Kelly are upset to find they were yielded. Kelly passes the time by drawing horns and things on the photo of Rob & Amber.
Both Uchenna & Joyce and Meredith & Gretchen choose Option 2 of the Detour. Uchenna & Joyce work well as a team moving the boats. Meredith & Gretchen struggle. Uchenna tries to help them but it is against the rules so he can’t. Uchenna feels bad because he knows the task is very difficult for the older team. Uchenna & Joyce are getting their 5th boat while Meredith & Gretchen are struggling to stack their 3rd. After Uchenna tries to help them, Gretchen comments that “Joyce and Uchenna are just a wonderful couple. They have inspired us to keep going.” After completing the Detour, Uchenna & Joyce find out that the train to Millennium Dome is faster than taking a cab. Meredith & Gretchen take the cab. Uchenna & Joyce don’t realize that “train” means Underground. They see trains on tracks above ground but when it doesn’t stop where they expect it to, Uchenna asks, “Are we on the wrong platform?” Then he realizes what they need to do and knows that they’ve lost more precious time.
Due to waiting for the yield time, Ron & Kelly are not much farther ahead of the other teams. Kelly opts to do this Roadblock and she is soon joined by Joyce and Meredith. There was lots of screaming as the non-driving team members tried to direct their partners. Part of the screaming was the drivers shouting “I can’t hear you.” Joyce made it clear that Uchenna’s “help” was just making her more nervous. He wised up and stopped trying to direct her. Then he noted, “She’s doing way better with my mouth shut.” If the number of attempts were posted for Kelly and Joyce, I didn’t see it. After seven attempts, Meredith successfully drove the bus. Ron & Kelly argued throughout this leg and they were arguing again on the cab ride to the Pit Stop which was Potter’s Field Park.
Rob & Amber were first to the Pit Stop and they won another prize…an “entertainment system”. Why is there ALWAYS a prize when they finish first but NEVER when Uchenna and Joyce finish first?? Phil commented on their good luck. Rob admitted that they’d had better luck than any other team.
Ron & Kelly finished second.
Uchenna & Joyce finished third.
Meredith & Gretchen came in last…and were eliminated. Phil smiled a lot during this last arrival. He told them, “You guys are an inspiration.”
At the end of the episode we saw each of the remaining teams discussing each other, the race, and winning. Of course, they all think they can win. Ron commented that, “I see a definite lack of character in Rob.” Joyce predicted that Rob & Amber and Ron & Kelly will be so focused on each other rather than the race that they will “cancel each other out” and she and Uchenna will win.
PREVIEWS FOR THE 2 HOUR FINALE:
Ron & Kelly continue to have relationships problems which appear to be intensifying. Kelly is shown in tears.
Rob & Amber seem to get a traffic ticket and Rob worries that it will cost them the race.
Uchenna and Joyce get a flat tire.
It looks like there is also going to be bungee jumping, a 6-way footrace at some point, and Rob having to carry Amber on his back.

Well no surprise in that episode. Actually I found it kind of dull. I figured unless some major screwup happened that M & G were going to be gone.

I loved it!!!! Don't tell any Survivor freaks, but this show has now passed Survivor as my favourite reality show.
Wonderful recap Brinna. You reminded me of things I had forgotten about.
I also found the whirling dervishes kind of creepy! I loved when Ron & Kelly drew all over Rob & Amber's picture, sounds like something I would have done. I'm thinking though, that if Rob & Amber had yielded Joyce and Uchenna that they would have been eliminated instead of the old couple. But Rob & Amber couldn't have known how close the back 2 were grouped up. And how wonderful was it of the old guy to give Ron & Kelly money??? What a guy.
I think this is now anybody's race to win, and I suspect it's going to be quite a bit about luck as we see Rob & Amber getting pulled over, and Joyce and Uchenna having a flat, etc. We've got three great teams of fierce competitors going into the finals, and I can't wait!!!!!!

I like Rob and Amber...I am glad they won the leg.
I hope they win the race...but Uchenna and Joyce if not R&A.
Ron and Kelly.....go bicker in South Carolina.
pika- 05-04-2005
I couldn't believe Kelly borrowing lipstick from the ticket lady. Sheesh, woman, you lost all your possessions and you're ina race but you just couldn't live without lipstick?
I can't remember what she and Ron were fighting over earlier in the show but she started demanding an apology and I was like "Shoot! You need to be apologizing to him, you uppity bitch!" He needs to kick her to the curb because he can do a lot better than her.

Re: May 3rd Episode Summary teams received $377.00 for the leg.
*Nitpicker alert* I thought it was $477.00, I could be wrong, though?
Rob & Amber didn’t know what whirling dervishes were and when they saw them, Amber’s reaction was “spooky”.
Tbqh, I also thought they were 'spooky'
I guess I’m no beauty queen because it would not have occurred to me to ask a strange woman if I could use her make-up.
This was almost as disgusting as it was ridiculous, how the hell are you gonna think that lipstick (someone elses to boot-bleck) is going to make you look better when your skin is loaded with acne and your eyes all swollen with dark circles underneath??? Its akin to putting a coat of wax onto a 15 year old car that has recently been in a three car pile up! (I'm mean, I know)
Ron & Kelly argued throughout this leg and they were arguing again on the cab ride to the Pit Stop which was Potter’s Field Park.
These two need to get out of each others life as soon and as far as possible! I don't think I've seen two people so unsuited for each other in my life except maybe my brother-in-law and his ex-wife who turned out to be gay, after all.
Gotta admit, its ridiculous how incredibly lucky these two have been throughout the race, but I think that lucks about to abandon them real soon.
Joyce predicted that Rob & Amber and Ron & Kelly will be so focused on each other rather than the race that they will “cancel each other out” and she and Uchenna will win.
ITA, I think that Joyce is 100 % correct, first Rombah's luck is going to turn bad and then they will focus on beating out Ron & Kelly not really worrying about U & J, and that will be the factor that costs them the win.
Thats what I think, anyway. But then again, I've been known to be incorrect once or twice before*shrugs*

You know, I thought the first team said $377, and then when another team read their clue, I thought they said $477.
So basically, I don't know which is right. :?
Rufus- 05-04-2005
I forgot about the lipstick in my previous post .... first off I thought it was gross to borrow some stranger's lipstick, that's germy! And then when they showed her putting it on in close-up, I was thinking she should have borrowed coverup instead.

$477 is what I wrote down. (Sorry Brinna...But maybe both Her Grace and I are wrong! )
And R&K left at 12:53...exactly 2 hours after U&J. Just to complete your times.

Well...Rob was born with a horseshoe...up his ass!(according to him)
But while they have had both good and bad luck (a broken boat - 2nd team to 1st FF, didn't get early flight to Turkey)...their attitude about racing hard and being good to each other has NEVER wavered. They don't bicker. They support each other. And they race to WIN. They have been entertaining...which is what TV is about. And they have been competitive. They understand "HOW" to do the Amazing Race. Get local help (its worked in the past), be nice to the people in the country you are in, use every advantage you have, and never forget this is a race...not a vacation. Hunt down those chances to get ahead.
Why did they win this leg? They LOOKED for the flight advantage, took a chance, busted tail through the challanges and used rules (the yield) to their advantage. They learned from the mistake of the last leg...which M&G and U&J didn't...they played it safe and ended up last and third.
Finally...sorry about the expostion...U&J seem to be great people, and pretty good racers. And will cheer with delight if they win. And I think it stinks that they haven't won bupkiss for the 2 legs they have finished first. But we shall see.
Now if only Ron & Kelly don't win, I can have a happy ending.
Pepette- 05-04-2005
Kelly needed more than just lipstick..Egads! I was thinking while watching my tape this morning that Amber is prettier without makeup than Kelly is all dolled up.
I dont think Ron can make himself much clearer, he dont want to marry her. She needs to give it up.
Its a shame when couples like Uchenna and Joyce want kids so badly and cant have them. I bet they'd make wonderful parents. I hope they win.
I have to admit, I started out not liking Rob/Amber and not wanting them to do well, but each week I liked them more and more. I really dont think they did anything all that underhanded. Sure they were a little sneaky now and then but they are in it to win it. If Im being honest, I cant really say I woulndnt have done the same things if I'd thought of them.
Well...Rob was born with a horseshoe...up his ass!(according to him)
 I never heard that one before, but as I watched Rob getting yet another local to help them I thought of that saying "He could fall in a pile of s**t and come out smelling like a rose."

Exaclty. This is why Ive come to like them in this race. I still think survivor Rob was obnoxious and slimey and survivor Amber was a coat-tail rider but in the context of this race they are what a good team should be. And yes, now that its about over, I will admit, Rob did enhance my viewing pleasure this time around with his race technique
Grethchen and Meredith...what can I say? I liked them a lot at first but it didnt take long for Gretchen to get on my nerves  . Then she just became annoying and I wanted them gone. I will give them credit though for making it as far as they did whether it was pure luck or not, they deserve to be singled out for that at their ages. Gretchen whined a lot but she did hang in there and try everything that came their way. But she still annoyed me

Absolutely disgusting!!!!

Kelly should have just asked that woman for her entire makeup case, went in the bathroom, made up her face, then she would have been back to her beauty queen self!! :? She's so self absorbed....
I'm rooting for Uchenna and Joyce all the way!!!

Re: The Amazing Race Why is there ALWAYS a prize when they finish first but NEVER when Uchenna and Joyce finish first??
Bad luck, I guess. The first time they were first was when they used the Fast Forward... and I don't think there has even been a prize for the 1st place team when the FF was used. The second time they came in first was when there was the special Travelocity prize... and it would've been weird to hand out both a prize for the 1st place team and the team with the special gnome.

We don't care about that....they should have won a prize   ....we just want to make it known that it wasn't fair....we can pout about it all we want and you can't stop us
