May 30th episode The chefs were brought to Hell's Kitchen, a restaurant in Hollywood, California where the competition would take place. They were introduced to the maitre 'd, Jean Philippe, who works for Gordon Ramsay in one of his London restaurants, and two of his sous-chefs, Maryann and Scott.
In the first challenge, the chefs each had 45 minutes to prepare their signature dish to present to Gordon Ramsay. It would be something that would represent them.
Andrew presented "Andrew's Absolute Penne". Ramsay spit it out.
Mary Ellen prepared endive. Ramsay told her it was boring and she could have come up with something better in 45 minutes.
Wendy made fried rice with Chinese sausage. She was a wiseass and said she would have added lobster if she knew Ramsay was coming and he reminded her that she knew he was coming.
Jimmy presented chicken breast stuffed with portabello mushroom and goat cheese. He served it with the unedible carrot tops as garnish and the chicken was overcooked on the outside but raw inside.
Ralph made seared tuna with hot and cold sesame noodles. Ramsay questioned why he served the tuna with noodles and seemed satisfied with the answer.
Elsie served turkey tacos and Ramsay said they looked disastrous but the taste wasn't bad.
Dewberry presented spaghetti and it was overcooked. Ramsey considered it a kiddie dish.
Chris made salmon on a cedar plank and Ramsey said it was still raw on the bottom.
Jeff presented steak with mushrooms, which Ramsay said was overcooked but the sauce was nice.
Jessica served Cajun style softshell crab and Ramsay found the spices too hot.
Michael presented scallops with the roe on. When Ramsay asked, Michael admitted he personally didn't like the roe but served it that way anyway.
Carolann served chicken parmigiana and Ramsay complimented it, saying the presentation was good and it tasted nice.
Next, the teams were divided into two groups--Red and Blue.
Red Team-Jimmy, Elsie, Carolann, Jeff, Dewberry, Chris
Blue Team-Andrew, Mary Ellen, Ralph, Jessica, Wendy, Michael
Both teams were sent to their dorms, located next to the kitchen, and were to return to the dining room in 30 minutes. There were two seperate kichens and a divided dining room, with the Blue Team serving the blue tables and the Red Team serving the red tables.
One sous-chef was assigned to each team for them to consult with but they wouldn't be doing any cooking. Ralph was appointed waiter for the Blue Team and Jeff was appointed waiter for the Red Team. The teams had a few hours to learn how to prepare 5 starters, 5 entrees, and 5 desserts.
Ramsay's policy was that if one dish for a table had to be redone, all the orders for that table had to be redone, which kept both kitchens backed up. It was one hour and 20 minutes after the restaurant opened that the first appetizers were served, entrees weren't served until 2 and a half hours after the restaurant opened.
Many customers walked out before their orders came out, one table of ladies complained repeatedly to Ramsay but he told everyone to ignore them and insulted them, Carolann was standing around doing nothing at one point until Ramsay directed her to help at the stove, Jimmy burned his hand and had a few accidents because he was clumsy and Ramsay ending up closing the restaurant early, leaving the maitre d' to explain to the customers who hadn't already walked out.
Ramsay used the customer comment cards to choose a winning team. For the Red Team, half the diners rated the service below average, only one dessert was served but it got a good rating. They didn't like their waiter, Jeff, and 2/3rd's of them walked out. For the Blue Team, Ralph's customers rated him outstanding, 4 desserts were served but nobody liked them.
The Blue Team won the competition and Ramsay named Elsie the most competent on the Red Team. She had 30 minutes to nominate two members of her team to go home. She chose Carolann, because she was the least knowledgable in the kitchen, and Dewberry, because he showed a lack of energy and interest in his team. Ramsay eliminated Carolann, citing the fact that she had no interest in helping her team until he called her on it as his reason.

Wow! This is a good show! The pressure the "chefs" were put under right from the get go! I don't get why Elsie didn't nom Jimmy (instead of Dewberry). Jimmy screwed up the most. She even said Dewberry didn't have anything to worry about ("you're not going anywhere.") then turns around and nominates him!
I didn't like Carolann. She just stood there in the kitchen, not bothering to help anyone, much like what Dewberry did. But at least he has cooking skills in that he is a pastry chef.
Those poor people waiting for their food! I would have left after an hour!
Now the tension builds between Elsie and Dewberry. Hot stuff!

Here is what was in the locked thread...Ill just copy mine and Brads posts here...
Man what a foul mouth on that guy. Too much bleeping.
I hate to say this but Is that whole restaruant a set up for the show, and are the customers actors? Because who is going to pay for a dinner cooked by non-chefs, wait over an hour for a first course, and then sit back down and wait some more after that chef guy tells them to shut the bleep up or sit the bleep down after calling them bimbos?
If I had still been there after an hour with nothing to eat, I sure as heck would have been gone after the chef called me a bimbo.
And what was that woman thinking telling Drewberry (nice name eh?) he as safe and then nominating him?
That's what I was thinking, Pepette. The customer service was bad, but what can a waiter do when the food isn't ready? The worst part to me (as a customer) would have been seeing and hearing the head chef yelling and cursing at the employees and customers.

I was surprised he sent Carolann home. He put her in the dessert area and I have a feeling if she had shown the initative and tried to help elsewhere, he would have freaked out about that too.
Plus her first dish was one he liked and said was good, and he said the one desert that made it out, the customer liked. Dewberry on the other hand was not so good.
Yep, there's gonna be DRAMA in the kitchen....oh boy!!
But on a personal note...Id have to kick Chef Ramsey in the nuts

I was wondering about that too, Pepette. Any other person would have had Ramsey's head if he called them a "bimbo"! Maybe these people are part of the show...Hell's Kitchen needs someone to taste the food! Plus they were more patient than most people would be, especially the woman who was still smiling when the maitre 'd told them the kitchen was closed!

Maybe they were volunteers that were given a free meal (if they got one!) in exchange for participating in a reality show or something.
Though next week it looks like one guy gets -*test*-('")y with the maitre'd...

The "customers" certainly didn't seem real. They were either actors or people in on the fact that it was the trial run for the chef teams and they shouldn't expect a yummy, timely meal.
All the stuff between Ramsey and the blonds was so fake.
If, somehow, this was all real, I would not have wanted to be in the maitre d's shoes.

Couldn't the chef have censored his foul mouth for the filming? It's annoying to have to hear constant bleeps.
Nobody, but nobody who owns a restaurant would talk to real customers the way he talked to those women.
Something very unreal about this show. Entertaing but unreal.
And why - oh why - would parents name their poor chubby son "Dewberry"? How many thousands of times do you think he's been called Dingleberry in his life?

Yes that constant bleeping got old real fast.
Thats exactly why I think there is a lot of acting in the part outside of the actual cooking.
Of course I will watch. Ive got a serious problem :?
It like they knew he was going to grow up to be a chubby pastry chef isnt it?

In that case, his parents should have named him Doughboy instead of Dewberry.

In my opinion, it's just a bleeping reality show.

My mind kept translating "dingleberry"...it made me giggle uncomfortably.

Re: Hell's Kitchen Well, I finally got around to watching the tape of the first episode last night. I don't know what to think of the show just yet. Something about it seems too fake to be legit. Is Chef Bleep-A-Lot for real? He is such an obnoxious jerk, he can't possibly be like this in real life. And his constant swearing got old real fast. As for the wannabe chefs, there isn't a single one of them I care for and would root for. None of them impress me at this point.
I'll watch the next episode or two, and then I'll make up my mind whether or not this show is worth my time.

Kaka, I missed it, thanks for the recap, Pika. Is it on every Monday?
I know, I know, I will check the calendar!
pika- 06-06-2005
To answer your question, Tif, it is on every Monday, as long as the episodes last.
