May 10th show Once again, IMO, the singers sang in order of ability and quality:
Carrie
Bo
Vonzell
Anthony
The first four songs were country:
Carrie sang "Sin Wagon". I liked her shirt. She was in her comfort zone and got into her performance. There was a long ovation from the studio audience. All the judges liked it. Randy said he loves the fact that she knows exactly who she is. He deemed her ready to cut a record and he would buy one today. Paula had virtually nothing to add. Simon said it "would have been a shock if you hadn't gotten that right" but said it was "very good" and that she showed personality.
Bo sang "It's a Great Day to Be Alive". I wasn't too impressed by this performance. He looked good and sang okay and carried the mike stand. Randy thought it was good but Paula suggested he needs to pick more challenging songs and Simon thought it was "boring, lazy, uninspiring; it wasn't great."
Vonzell sang "How Do I Live?" IMO she needed to knock it out of the park to counter the hords of Anthony voters but I don't think she did. She had a rough beginning. I love Trisha Yearwood's version of this song and I think Vonzell did it badly. It really dragged, too. Randy agreed with me about the rough beginning but said that she "always picks the most difficult songs". Paula didn't really comment on the song but asked Vonzell about her day which caused Vonzell to cry. What was that about? Did I miss something at the top of the show? Simon also showed compassion for whatever is going on with Vonzell by telling her she looked and sounded nervous, for the first time in weeks and then said, "I'll leave it at that."
Anthony sang "I'm Already There". He also had a rough start. I didn't get the purpose of sitting on the steps at the beginning of the song. It seemed like purposeless blocking to me. He didn't do badly, but he's still IMO the worst of the four singers left. The judges thought he did "good" but Simon also called it "gooey" or "syrupy".
The second selections of songs were "Songs of Philly" and all written by Gamble and Huff.
Carrie sang "If You Don't Know Me By Now". I liked this song and thought she did it well. She didn't really perform. It was more of a singing into the microphone and showcasing her voice performance. Carrie might not be dynamic onstage but she'll do well on video. There was another long ovation from the studio audience. None of the judges liked it. Randy said "It just didn't work" and that it "never quite got on track". Paula said it wasn't the right song for her. Simon said the song was one of the best pop songs ever written but her performance of it was an "utter mess". I don't think the judges and I were listening to the same performance...unless this is a strategy to get voters to defend her by voting.
Bo sang "For the Love of Money". He wore shades and really tried to cultivate a "cool" look but I thought he looked more cool in the first performance when he wasn't trying so hard. Bo felt compelled to carry the mike stand again which detracted from the "cool" look IMO. I can't help but think of The Apprentice when I hear this song. Paula was standing and dancing during the performance and I just wanted to shout "SIT DOWN!!" Randy "loved" this performance and Paula thought it was his "best performance yet". Simon commented that he thought Donald Trump wrote that song. His assessment was "terrible image, fantastic performance."
Vonzell sang "Don't Leave Me This Way" and it was much better than her first performance. Randy declared it "excellent" and that she "vindicated" the last song. He said she proved that "You can definitely sing". Paula applauded her for taking risks and said it was her personal best. Simon called it a "manic performance" that made him tense but said it was better than her first song.
Anthony chose to sing the same song as Carrie "If You Don't Know Me By Now". WHY?? I thought his rendition was painfully awful. I thought Carrie did much better. The judges disagreed with me. Randy thought it was good and said it was better than Carrie's. Paula said he "nailed it". Simon thought that Anthony had a better musical arrangement but that a singer needs "soul" to sing this song well and he compared Anthony singing this to Woody Allen playing Shaft. That at least was funny!

Re: May 10th show Once again, IMO, the singers sang in order of ability and quality: I agree.
Carrie
Bo
Vonzell
Anthony

Simon said it "would have been a shock if you hadn't gotten that right" but said it was "very good" and that she showed personality. I liked her performance. On the radio this morning the dj's here thought that she didn't do it as good as Natalie from the Dixie Chicks. I disagree with them. I thought she nailed it.Bo sang "It's a Great Day to Be Alive". I wasn't too impressed by this performance. He looked good and sang okay and carried the mike stand. Randy thought it was good but Paula suggested he needs to pick more challenging songs and Simon thought it was "boring, lazy, uninspiring; it wasn't great." I didn't like it. And I guess I was the only one who thought that he forgot the first couple lines of the song. They didn't sound like the real words to me. The music was so loud maybe the judges didn't notice or maybe because they don't know country songs that well. I felt he had the potential to do really well with this song. His voice isn't that different from Travis Tritt. I think he was uncomfortable with the song and that effected his performance of it.Vonzell sang "How Do I Live?" IMO she needed to knock it out of the park to counter the hords of Anthony voters but I don't think she did. She had a rough beginning. I love Trisha Yearwood's version of this song and I think Vonzell did it badly. It really dragged, too. Simon also showed compassion for whatever is going on with Vonzell by telling her she looked and sounded nervous, for the first time in weeks and then said, "I'll leave it at that." I love Trisha Yearwood's version and thought Vonzell bombed this one. Her range was no where near Trisha's on this song. So what if you pick difficult songs, if you don't sing them right, who cares. And the Paula thing made me want to slap her. Are we going for the sympathy vote now. Give me a break.Anthony sang "I'm Already There". I thought he did alright vocally with this. He sang it a little slower than the original, but he didn't do too bad.
The second selections of songs were "Songs of Philly" and all written by Gamble and Huff.

I don't think the judges and I were listening to the same performance...unless this is a strategy to get voters to defend her by voting. I didn't think she did that bad. I did think she sang it a little slow, but I liked the way she varied it at the end, and how she hit all the high notes. I think out of everyone this season, that she has the best control over her voice. And what is with the harsh comments. They didn't seem to care about her feelings like they did Vonzell. Maybe if she cried they would have gone softer on her.Bo sang "For the Love of Money". He wore shades and really tried to cultivate a "cool" look but I thought he looked more cool in the first performance when he wasn't trying so hard. Simon commented that he thought Donald Trump wrote that song. His assessment was "terrible image, fantastic performance." I didn't really pay much attention during this song. But I figured however he sang, he would still get props from the judges.Vonzell sang "Don't Leave Me This Way" and it was much better than her first performance. Randy declared it "excellent" and that she "vindicated" the last song. He said she proved that "You can definitely sing". Paula applauded her for taking risks and said it was her personal best. Simon thought that Anthony had a better musical arrangement but that a singer needs "soul" to sing this song well and he compared Anthony singing this to Woody Allen playing Shaft. That at least was funny! I didn't care much for this version either, and I was shocked that they allowed the same song to be sung. I think that is a bit unfair either way. What exactly are the rules? Who picked the song choice first, and did they both know what the other had chosen?quote>

Anthony was the only one who IMO did a good job with both his Nashville and Philly selections. He probably didn't know Carrie also chose the same song as he did but apparently it's allowed.
I did not like Carrie's version of "If You Don't Know Me By Now", Anthony's arrangement was much better. Between the two, Anthony has more "soul" than Carrie (could ever have.) Country is her niche.
Bo and Vonzell sucked with their Nashville songs (boring!!) but they redeemed themselves big time with the Philly songs.
Vonzell did look nervous and it showed in her singing. She was off key through out the entire song. I felt bad for her.
Bo rocked with "For the Love of Money" but he needs to stop carrying the mike stand in every performance. It's starting to get old.
I have a feeling Anthony will be going home....
My choice would be Carrie, she's not very versatile.

Bo should be leaving tonight. He sucked hard on both songs. I don't understand what people saw in "Money" but that was one of the worst songs of the entire season.

I was really looking forward to the country songs since Im mainly a country fan, but I was disappointed in all 4 of them, especially Carrie.
Carrie has been doing country songs and using a country style all through this competition, then when its actually country night, she chooses a song that is more pop/rock than anything shes done thus far. I didnt get it, and I didnt really care for her version either.
I liked her better on the Philly song, but I still wasnt thrilled with her rendition, I liked Anthony's better. She's been my 2nd fav throughout and I expect her as one of the final 2.
Bo, who has been my favorite throughout really let me down this week. I knew he would do a Travis Tritt song, I just knew it, but I expected one of his more rock style songs, like "Trouble". Im surprised he chose such a mellow song and then didnt do very well. I agreed with Simon, I found it boring and like he really didnt care. He didnt do much better with the Philly song for me either. I didnt get what they thought was so great about his version. I expect to see him as the other final 2. (If he makes it thru this week)
Vonzell tanked on her first song IMO, I dont know if she was just too emotional, had something troubling on her mind or what, (she said it had been a rough day before crying) but I thought it was one of her worst performances yet. And what is it with Paula always saying "you brought it home at the end". She sounded just as bad at the end as the beginnning to me. Now on her 2nd song, I thought she did pretty well. I probably enjoyed that song best of all last night.
Anthony....I dont know, I didnt really like his first song, but I may be a bit predjudiced because Lonestar is one of my favorite groups and that is a favorite song so I couldnt really judge to fairly.
Now on his 2nd song, I thought he did great. I liked his rendition much better than Carrie's.
All in all, I was disappointed with the show and I wouldnt even want to try and guess where the votes will fall this week. Puala was a complete waste of space and time last night, she didnt do much more that agree with Randy and hand out her usual platitudes.

Re: American Idol Here's how I would rank the contestants this week:
1. Carrie - Two decent performances, her first was by far the best. I think it was funny the way Simon blamed the band for Carrie's lackluster second song. Her second song wasn't all that bad. It just wasn't one of her best. But even her worst performances are better than most by the other contestants.
2. Bo - I liked both performances, they were done well. I enjoyed the first better than the second, though. I just don't see what the judges thought was amazing about his second performance. It was good, but really no better than anything else he has done in the past.
3. Anthony - Two solid performances, not bad at all. I thought Anthony was going to suck big time when he began his first song, but he managed to control himself and turn in a good performance. His second song was just as good. Not great by all means, but pretty darn good. He was better than Vonzell this week. I think he's safe.
4. Vonzell - She really blew it with the first song. It was horrible, I hated it. It was a bad performance. And she knew it because she got all emotional afterwards. Her second song was so much better, but I don't think it is enough to save her from elimination this week. I won't be surprised if Vonzell is the one to go tonight.
