March 21: Wishin’ and Hopin’ American Idol 6, March 21: Wishin’ and Hopin’
by Jenn Brasler -- 03/22/2007
All of the top 11 Idols are “wishin’ and hopin’” that they’ll make it through to the next week of the competition. Of course, not all of them can stick around. Last night Haley picked up her game, but did the voters think it was enough to keep her in the competition?
Last night was ‘60s/British invasion night. Tonight we try to fling someone across the pond and out of the competition. Whoever’s left after tonight gets to go on tour, so I hope we don’t lose anyone good.
Ryan gives us a recap. Peter Noone, Lulu, Ashley, AKA Sobby McPigtails, as I like to call her. Paula pictures Simon nude. Stephanie bored me and made me sad that she’s not singing better. Sligh is becoming a little more like Taylor every day. Blake beat boxed and made Ryan dance. Confession time: I don’t like Blake. Don’t e-mail me and try to convince me why I should like him. It won’t work.
Haley made Simon’s night and also impressed me. LaKisha didn’t make Simon’s night, and there’s something about her that annoys me. Chris R. did much better than usual. Sanjaya made a girl cry. Phil was okay with “Tobacco Road,” and I thought Gina did better than the judges did. Jordin continued to be completely awesome, and now more people agree. Melinda also continued to be awesome, and they should just give her the anchor spot forever and ever.
Ryan says that for once, Paula wasn’t the one crying. Our entertainment for the night is Peter Noone, who sings “There’s a Kind of Hush.” He sounds like a mix between Tom Jones and Elton John. He tries to get “all the children” to sing, which is funny because… children don’t know this song.
This week’s Ford commercial is to “Another Saturday Night.” The Idols go to the Laundromat. Melinda (or her stunt double) does flips on top of the washing machines. I thought Haley was the gymnast. That was really lame.
Brad Garrett chills with the Idols. He’s looking very tan, and I don’t believe he fits the age requirements for the show. Ryan immediately announces that Brad is the first person to be voted out tonight. The audience boos and the contestants clap for him. ‘Bye, Brad.
Rather than go down the rows, Ryan asks Phil, Melinda, and Blake to stand. None of them is in the bottom three. Sligh, LaKisha, and Jordin (in yet another cute outfit, though I could do without the jacket) are also asked to stand. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess they’re all safe, too. Yep, I’m right.
Now we get to the maybes. Sanjaya, Haley, and Gina stand up. None of them is in the bottom three either. WHAT? America, we need to have a talk. Don’t make me ground you. This means Chris Richardson and Stephanie are in the bottom two this week. One of them is safe and one of them will be going home. But before we find out who, we’ll get a trivia question, a performance from Lulu, May sweeps, the next season of So You Think You Can Dance, and the Super Bowl.
Someone in the audience has a Clay Aiken sign. Did I fall asleep and miss the ride in the time machine? I’m so bummed! The question is so stupid; if you watched the show just a few weeks ago, you’ll know the answer. Ryan then reminds us about Idol Gives Back and sends out a message to “corporate America” to help with the fundraising. In other words, “Sponsor us and be nice.”
Lulu sings “To Sir With Love,” the title song from the movie she starred in with Sidney Poitier. Her outfit is… um… let’s say 30 years too young for her. The top is sparkly and black and leaves little to the imagination. Seriously, Haley was wearing more clothes last night. Also, Lulu has not listened to my ban on leggings. At least she can sing, though.
Then there’s another commercial, so I’m anticipating that the sing-out will be cut off again. Way to manage your time, producers. When we come back, with just two minutes left, Ryan announces that Chris is staying and Stephanie is going home. She looks like she’s okay with it, though. Funeral video, now with picture-in-picture so we can watch Stephanie watching herself! No sing-out. Bleh.
