July 6 – Don’t Come Around Here No More Rock Star: Supernova, July 6 – Don’t Come Around Here No More
by Jenn Brasler -- 07/07/2006
At the end of last night’s performance show, we learned that Magni, Chris (right), and Phil had the lowest number of votes so far. Did those placements remain the same? Or will someone else be facing elimination? Who will be the first singer sent home?
Thanks to the two people who e-mailed me to tell me that Dave wasn’t calling Russia the motherland last night, he was saying La Raza. That makes a lot more sense, doesn’t it?
Brooke welcomes us back to the Mayan. Tonight she’s wearing a leather vest as a shirt. It’s an improvement over last night’s my-boyfriend-doesn’t-know-I-raided-his-closet look, and I’m sure a lot of people are thrilled that her breasts are on full display. She tells us that they had an awesome concert last night. Now we’ll find out who’s in the bottom three and who will go home.
For those of us with bad short-term memories, Brooke reminds us that those who escape elimination tonight will still be in the running to front Supernova. She also tells us about the winner’s prize, the fact that there are 15 singers competing, etc. Supernova is introduced. Dave’s there, too, of course. Tommy greets everyone at the theater and us in TV land. They had fun last night and there were some amazing performances. Tommy says you suck if you missed it. He wants everyone to know how important the voting is because it helps the band shape itself. This gives the audience a lot of power.
Tonight is the first elimination show of the season. Someone will have his or her dreams dashed. Last night millions watched, then voted. The three singers with the fewest number of votes will perform again for Supernova, who will cut one. But before then, we get to see the singers as they moved into their mansion in L.A. Storm is amazed by the house, which is, of course, really nice. The singers drink with Lukas leading a toast to the best person coming out on top. The singers pick their songs for the first performance, negotiating with each other. My new boyfriend Josh admits that they’re not taking song choice too seriously at this stage. There’s some arm-wrestling. Ryan says that when they start seeing people leaving, they’ll take the decisions more seriously.
Of course, then last night the singers hit the stage. Butch Walker was there to help Supernova narrow down the field. Tommy reminded everyone that this is huge. We see an overview of performances. Storm, Toby, and Dilana are highlighted as three of the best, but Phil… not so much. Chris didn’t impress Supernova. Lukas ended with a bang.
Dave asks Chris if he has any regrets about his arrangement or performance of “Roxanne.” Chris says he doesn’t. He did “Roxanne” because he wanted a challenge; he didn’t come here not to take a step forward. He admits it was a bad choice, but he doesn’t regret it. If he gets crucified for it, so be it. Dave agrees that rock is about taking chances.
Dave asks Phil if he’s thinking differently about his song selection (he did “Cult of Personality”) after hearing Supernova’s reaction. He definitely is. When they were picking songs, everyone was getting to know each other; they weren’t being cutthroat yet because they weren’t that comfortable with each other. He’s not saying he’ll punch people in the face – except Lukas, he jokes – but he’ll take the selection more seriously in the future. He thinks everyone will. Dave reminds him that there’s a lot at stake here.
Brooke tells us that as memorable as last night was, there was a lot of rocking after the show, too. We see footage of everyone celebrating back at the mansion. Dana says that she wasn’t nervous. She’s thrilled that she got to live her dream for a few minutes. Chris, however, is reeling from Supernova’s criticism. He talks about how much it hurts to be told you suck after giving 110 percent. However, he has no apologies. He’s here because he’s one of the best singers in the world.
Lukas decides to put Dana on the spot. He asks who she thinks will be in the bottom three. Dana asks if he’s looking for her opinion of everyone’s talent. She interviews that he sucked the air out of the room. Dana tells Lukas that there’s no telling what America will think. Lukas asks Matt the same question, but Matt thinks Lukas should answer it. Lukas starts by saying that he did the best he could; fortunately, he’s blessed with a good voice and talent. I’m not liking Lukas very much. Matt repeats that he should answer the question. Dilana eggs him on. Lukas says that a lot of the singers sucked. He interviews that he loves everyone there but some people are going to get stepped on or trampled. If that’s the case, too bad. He’s not playing around.
Dave notes that Lukas never answered his own question. Lukas gives the disclaimer that things got crazy that night. He thinks that one person knows he’s in trouble and the other two are clueless. The first person would be Chris, who seems to accept this. Lukas thinks Dana will be in the bottom three because she wouldn’t be able to handle a party with Supernova, let alone a tour with them. The audience boos. Lukas continues that Dana is an amazing singer, but look who we’re dealing with. He also thinks Jenny is in trouble because her tone wasn’t right. He adds that it’s just his opinion and he doesn’t want anyone to let it sway them. Dave respects him for being honest but warns Jenny that these sound like fighting words. Jenny agrees with that but not with what Lukas said. She thinks she performed well and we’ll see what happens.
Dave reminds Chris that he proclaimed himself one of the world’s grea-*test*-('") singers. Chris says that they all busted their butts to be here. Dave asks Dana how it felt to be on the spot. Dana thinks Lukas’ question was loaded and put her in an uncomfortable situation. “Could you help me get the steak knife out of my heart?” she asks. Dave notes that Matt turned the question around, but he clearly has strong feelings. Matt says he doesn’t like it when a person won’t answer his own question. Lukas was in the spotlight and got praise and enjoyed his moment, so he should be able to answer the question. Dave says that at least Lukas finally answered it. The reality is that this is a competition and there’s a lot at stake.
Dave continues that stuff will happen, but the singers shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that last night was awesome. Tommy says that because of that, they’ve decided to see an encore: Supernova wants to hear Dilana again. She performs “Lithium” again, and it’s basically the same performance as last night, but that’s definitely not a complaint. I think it’s a good sign that she can be called up on stage without warning and can perform so well. Also, that chick probably has more energy than anyone else in this competition. Brooke notes the same. She reminds Dilana that this doesn’t mean she’s safe from the bottom three.
So who IS in the bottom three? At the end of last night’s performances, the three at risk were Chris, Phil, and Magni. None of them know that, however. Brooke will call out some singers’ names and have them stand up. They’re in no particular order. Sad music plays as she calls out Magni, Phil, and Chris. They were in the bottom three last night, but are they still? We’ll find out after a break, of course.
Brooke acts like a good little product placer and tells us we can get backstage footage on Verizon Wireless phones. Thanks, Brooke! She continues that after all the votes came in, the names of those in the bottom three changed – there were others at the bottom at various points. She does the if-I-call-your-name-stand-up thing again. The three she calls are Zayra, Ryan, and Matt. The nine singers sitting are safe for another week.
Brooke will call three names from the six already standing; those people were in the bottom three at the close of voting. Those three will each perform song of their choice, and then Supernova will choose who stays and who goes.
The first person in the bottom three is… Chris. We see his performance from last night and hear everyone’s comments and criticisms. Gilby says that Chris got a lot of criticism and got to make a point. He made a bold statement with his song choice. Tonight, he’ll try to change everyone’s opinion of him by singing The Doors’ “L.A. Woman.” Chris says that it’s a song that got him into rock, exploring who he is, and not caring what others say.
Chris’ performance is a lot better than what he did last night. He’s playing up to the audience a lot. He probably would have gotten a lot more praise if he’d done this last night. It’s pretty tame and not as dirty as Supernova is looking for, but it’s a solid performance. Chris finishes up by spitting water into the audience.
After a commercial, we learn that the second person in the bottom three is… Phil. He tells Brooke he wanted to come up on stage. We get clips of Phil’s performance and Dave and Supernova’s comments. Tommy repeats that it’s all about the song. Phil says he wanted to come out with a heavy-hitting song. He’d never sung “Cult of Personality” before, so he took a risk and thought he could handle it. He doesn’t think he sucked, and Tommy and the audience agree. Tommy says it’s crunch time.
Phil will be doing “Stars” by Switchfoot. Tommy loves Switchfoot. I never would have thought that. Phil says he looks to them for inspiration. I’m not very impressed by his performance. I feel like he’s impersonating someone, but I’m just not sure who. Last night I said that I thought his voice wasn’t as good as some of the other singers, and I still feel that way. He’s very dull. There’s just nothing there that stands out. And he’s doing this weird, annoying mumbly thing. He’s also sliding his notes, but that probably only irritates me because when I sang in choirs they always told us not to do that.
Back from a break, Brooke promises to give us the name of the last person in the bottom three. “Ryan…” she begins, but he’s safe. So is Zayra. (What? No way!) That leaves Magni and Matt. Matt… is the final person in the bottom three. Whoa, I didn’t see that coming. We see clips of him singing “Yellow.” Now that I listen again, I can hear a lot of pitch problems. Jason calls Matt his brutha, since someone has to cover for Desmond while Lost is on summer vacation. Jason loved Matt’s performance and thinks the song fit him well.
Dave has asked Matt bring something heavier, so Matt has brought “Planet Earth” by Duran Duran. I… what? I mean… really? Duran Duran? You’re singing for your life and you bring Duran Duran? That’s it. From now on, I’m calling Matt “Rio.” So Rio gives, like, a five-minute explanation trying to cover his butt for choosing this song. Jason tells him he’ll have Duran Duran fans on his side, but that’s not Supernova’s speed.
Rio does “Planet Earth” anyway. It feels like a high school talent show performance. He’s pumped it up, but it’s still not very rock. He doesn’t seem comfortable. Rio is practically doing jumping jacks trying to get audience to clap. There are a lot of pitch problems. I think it’ll be between him and Phil tonight. Since I’m bored by the performance, I’d like to take the opportunity to say how great the band is. They could probably make “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” sound like a Nirvana song.
Back from commercial again, Brooke reminds us that Supernova will be deciding who goes home. Jason tells all 15 singers that anyone could land in the bottom three. They have to be serious about choosing songs, so next week they should bring the song they want the most, even if it’s a ballad.
Now we get to it. Gilby tells Chris that his song choice tonight was good. He did exactly what he was supposed to do, choosing a song he wanted to prove what he could do. Supernova still questions Chris’ vocal ability, however. Gilby moves on to Phil, telling him he had good vocals, but they question his performance. Rio sang Duran Duran, so… there’s that. Obviously his song choice is also questionable. Rio understands and wants another chance to bring the rock. No, you see, that was your “another chance.” It’s sudden death. You don’t go into a bar fight with nail clippers and then ask if you can have a do-over. You go in with a knife.
Tommy says there are three singers on the chopping block and someone has to go. That someone is… not Phil. Tommy’s good at being ambiguous with the news, though he complains that he hates this. He reminds Rio that they said how important song choice is, and tonight his didn’t cut it. Rio is the first to go. The audience cheers for him.
Dave asks if he has anything to say. Rio tells the Supernova guys that they’re his heroes. He had their posters on his walls as a teen. Tommy gets a bad rap from the press, but he’s a beautiful guy. (I agree… but probably for very different reasons.) Rio doesn’t mind losing to the other singers because they all deserve to be here. Tommy tells him he didn’t lose, it’s just not the right time. Rio asks if he can say goodbye to his friends. They let him. Dilana looks really upset.
Brooke announces that Phil and Chris had close calls tonight. If we don’t want to see them back in the bottom three, we have to vote for them. Next week the show settles into its regular nights and times – performances on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST and results on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST. Until then, e-mail me to let me know what your Rock Star audition song would be. I’ll put a list of everyone’s songs in next week’s recap. Warning: if you name a Duran Duran song, I will “accidentally” lose your e-mail.
Instead of a farewell from Rio, which is usually a reality staple, we get some parting words from Phil and Chris. Phil isn’t sure what he did wrong. He’ll be taking song selection seriously and wants to find the perfect one. Chris is bummed that Rio is gone because he’s a good guy. He agrees that song choice is important and he needs something that fits him well. He’s not going home yet. Hey, do you guys get the impression that song choice is important here?
