July 12 - Fix You Rock Star: Supernova, July 12 - Fix You
by Jenn Brasler -- 07/13/2006
Supernova wants to make it clear that their comments are supposed to help the singers improve, not make them mad. And if you don’t get that, they’ll say it over and over. Have their comments helped Chris (right)? Or will he land in the bottom three again and put on another show when the band is looking to see the real him?
There’s a new credits sequence - shots of Supernova and the singers over “New Sensation.” Brooke is in some weird black shirt and jeans. Voting was up 40% this week. Tonight someone goes home, of course. Hi, Supernova and Dave. Brooke says he’s there to help her keep the inmates from taking over the asylum. Heh. He calls her shirt “awe-inspiring.” Tommy is asked about the competition but wants to say hi to the audience first. He says they’re having fun and things are getting crazy. He just wants things to get started.
We get an overview of last night’s performances. Magni, Dilana, and Toby are highlighted as the good while Zayra, Chris, and Jill were criticized (and, incidentally, were the early bottom three). Lukas did well but his constricting vowels were criticized. At the mansion, Lukas told everyone that he’s been doing that his whole life and it’s never hurt him. It’s just what he does. Jill was surprised by what Dave said about her, and she’s not happy about it. She wishes she’d said a few more things to him. Toby told everyone that he didn’t want anyone to say they won’t change - they’re there to learn. Later, Chris told Dilana that he didn’t appreciate Dave’s comments because he didn’t think he had anything to back them up.
Dave addresses Chris, telling him that he seemed defensive in the mansion footage. He thinks his explanation of his comments was enough. Chris says he’s had more time to soak everything up, and he’s here to improve as a singer and performer; he’ll work as hard as he can every week. Gilby asks Zayra if she thinks it’s important to be familiar with Supernova’s music. She says she’s familiar, just doesn’t own any of their stuff, which is what they asked her. Gilby asks the question again. Zayra says they’re legends and descriptive of a decade. They give incredible performances and the competing singers dream to live their lives. She admires them and hopes to be given a chance to rock with them. Gilby says they just want to see who fits with them. It’s important for the singers to be familiar with Supernova’s style. Zayra’s excuse is that she’s from Puerto Rico and could only buy 45s and singles of their music, not whole albums. Dave thinks she’ll have to explain what 45s are for the audience at home. Tommy fills in that they’re records that play at 45 revolutions per second.
Dave notes that Jill said she ran out of time before she could say everything she wanted to, so now’s her chance. She dances around the topic by saying that she expected comments after her performance. She wanted to do something “outside the box” (this is not The Apprentice, Jill!) and take a risk. She’s human and things affect her for a moment in time. She just lets them soak in and uses them as fuel to make her better for the next time.
Jason tells Lukas that his comments weren’t personal attacks. Lukas says he didn’t take them that way. Jason adds that he only wants to help. Lukas respects that and thanks him. Jason digs his vibe and thinks he has great tools work with. However, Lukas said he’s been singing for 15 years; 15 years ago, Jason was touring with the most successful gravel-voiced performer on the biggest metal album of all time. They play long shows and the last song has to be even better than the first. This isn’t an animosity contest; they want positive vibes. Again, they’re trying to make everyone better. Lukas says he wasn’t on the defensive, he was just commenting. He respects all of Dave and Supernova’s opinions.
Tommy tells Toby that after watching the tape, he can see that he has a good head on his shoulders. Plus, he seems to know what Supernova is trying to do here. He wonders what Toby thinks. Toby says that if they’re all cracking over Supernova’s comments, they’ll all fail. They might as well listen because they can’t buy this advice. He wants everyone to stay grounded. If Josh gets voted out, Toby can be my backup boyfriend. Tommy says that it’s good the singers aren’t taking their comments sitting down. They appreciate the feedback, but there’s a reason Supernova is sitting in one place and the singers are in another. The audience boos, even though it’s true. Gilby warns that the competition will get tougher every week and the singers shouldn’t take things personally. They’re just giving advice that they’ve learned so they can make the singers better. More importantly, they need one of the singers to front them.
Tommy says that that’s enough with the comments. It’s time for an encore performance, and this week the honor goes to Toby. Yay! I think I like his performance better than last night’s. He does some audience participation, which is a good idea for a competition where the audience determines who stays and who goes.
Let’s get down to business. If Brooke calls a singer’s name, it means that person was in the bottom three at the start of voting last night. Those people are, once again, Jill, Chris, and Zayra. But were they still at the bottom at the end of voting? After a commercial break, we learn that the bottom three changed slightly and a fourth rocker was there at one point. That rocker was… Jenny. Interesting. How did Phil escape? This means the other ten are safe for another week. Yay, another week of my boyfriend Josh and my backup boyfriend Toby!
Brooke will now begin calling out the official bottom three for their survival performances. The first singer is… Jill. We see her inexplicable performance of “Violet” and hear Supernova and Dave’s comments again. Jill is singing “Bring Me to Life” (Evanescence) because she loves it and feels there’s some heavy stuff as well as beauty in it. She thinks it will show a different style and texture in her voice.
Jill is okay. She’s definitely fighting to stick around, but I don’t think this was the right song for that. Zayra, by the way, looks very nervous. I don’t think Jill has the right voice for this competition. She has the performance part down, but she puts too much force into the vocals. I wouldn’t be able to sit through a two-and-a-half-hour concert with her singing. It’s hard enough to sit through two minutes.
The second singer in the bottom three (cue the dramatic music) is… Zayra. Well, color me surprised. We get a replay of her performance of “You Really Got Me” and hear Supernova and Dave’s comments. Brooke asks if Gilby stands behind what they said. Gilby asks Zayra if she’s surprised to be in the bottom three. Yeah, she is. She calls people out for not voting. Gilby says that now she gets another chance. So she’ll do… “You Really Got Me.” She loved the feel and arrangement from last night. The song represents what she would do with the band - “rock with electronic and fun and really powerful on stage.” You can’t make this stuff up, people.
Zayra’s performance is pretty much exactly the same as it was last night. This is a bad, bad, bad idea. She should go home for this, no question. She was criticized last night and people didn’t vote for her, but she’s doing the exact same thing that landed her in the bottom three? You know, a definition of psychosis is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Just saying. Oh, she screams at the end. That’s new. Brooke simply says, “Thanks, Zayra.” Even Brooke is at a loss for words.
Either Chris or Jenny is the third person in the bottom three. The unlucky singer is… long pause… Brooke says Jenny’s name and someone gasps. But she’s actually safe, so Chris is in the bottom three for the second week in a row. He still has the curly Jim Morrison hair. We see his performance of “Take Me Out” and Supernova and Dave’s comments. Ironically, last night Chris said he wanted to learn and get better. Those are like magic words for Supernova! Maybe he has a chance.
Jason says he can appreciate the way Chris is handling things; he’s taking notice of the comments and compliments made and is using them to help himself out. So he’s letting them improve him? Interesting concept! Chris says the band has been looking for the real Chris, so he’s going to strip down… (the audience cheers) a Tonic song. The audience is slightly disappointed that his clothes will be staying on.
Chris goes acoustic with “If You Could Only See.” Of course, we don’t know whether this is the real Chris or just another show. But he sounds very good and especially passionate. I think the girls in the audience are loving him. (Incidentally, I’ve heard they’re lowering the minimum age of the audience from 18 to 12, so expect more American Idol-like cheering.) Supernova will now deliberate, and when we return from a commercial break, either Zayra, Jill, or Chris will be going home.
Supernova starts with Jill. Gilby says she has a great, strong voice, but they were confused by her different look last night. Zayra gives great performances (really?) and they like watching her, but they’re a little upset that she didn’t do her homework. She asks them to teach her. Supernova is pleased by Chris’ efforts and the fact that he listened to their comments. However, being in the bottom three two weeks in a row is hard to ignore.
Tommy tells everyone to say hello to the hatchet man. I wonder how he got elected to this position. Maybe he lost a game of rock, paper, scissors. He starts with Jill… who’s safe. Eh. Maybe she’ll tone it down next week. Tommy loves both Chris and Zayra, and Chris calls “T. Lee” his boy. Supernova had a difficult decision to make, but they’ve agreed that Chris is the second to be eliminated. What? You have to be kidding me. Seriously? Chris? Did they not listen to Zayra? That’s ridiculous. Dave tells him they like his willingness to take constructive criticism and his humility; it’s a rare thing. His performance tonight was his best yet. So why is he going home? Arg!
Chris says it’s been a crazy ride, and now it’s over. However, he still has a long way to go. Just because this didn’t work out doesn’t mean this is the end of the road. He’s glad he got the opportunity and will never forget the experience. He’s so classy! Gilby asks if he had fun. Well, of course. After Chris gets another round of applause, Jason says that this part of his life is over, but it’s a stepping stone. He needs more stage experience and fine-tuning, which he’s received. He appreciates Chris’ understanding of what’s been going on. Tommy says that there are no losers; just being at this level means he won. He wishes Chris luck and apologizes for having to break the bad news. Chris thinks it’s funny because about seven years ago he recorded an album called “Stepping Stones.” The audience cheers as he hugs the other singers.
Brooke tells us to vote and check out rockstar.msn.com. We’ll be back next week on Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST. Instead of a post-episode farewell from Chris, we get comments from Jill and Zayra. Jill is glad she’s gotten another change and is happy she took a risk. She showed that she can sing (well…) and has other tonalities to her voice. Zayra is sad to see Chris go. She’s not worried that her days are numbered.
