Begging Her Pardon
Just as people across the province let out a sigh of relief knowing Canada's most notorious female killer would be on a tight legal leash when she walks out of jail, Karla Homolka has some future plans that may inspire ire in many.
The reviled killer told a Corrections Canada psychologist in 2001 that one day she hopes to be pardoned.
And CityPulse obtained a letter from Homolka to the lawyer that negotiated her infamous plea bargain - dated February 13th, 1993 - requesting blanket immunity. The schoolgirl killer is scheduled to walk out of prison in July after completing her 12-year sentence for the murders of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy.
“I am desirous of obtaining blanket immunity against prosecution for any offences alleged to have been committed by me, or any offences that I am alleged to be a party to, or accessory to,” she wrote.
Homolka’s request has stunned the French and Mahaffy families, the public, and Osgoode Hall law professor Alan Young.
“It’s got to be the most absurd request for a pardon I’ve ever heard,” he said. “Conceivably after five years of being a good citizen she could apply but I do believe her past will haunt her.”
The letter demonstrates how Homolka had a plan from the start, trying to think of ways to distance herself from the terrible crimes she committed through blanket immunity, he added.
The girls’ families were outraged when they heard the news, according to Tim Danson, the lawyer representing them, and they plan to fight any Homolka attempts at a pardon.
The killer’s request also angered members of the public who shuddered to think that someone found guilty of such heinous crimes could be eligible for legal forgiveness.
“She doesn’t deserve it,” restaurant worker Shawnette Bankasingh said. “She did bad things and ... she shouldn’t be excused.”
Since 1970, the National Parole Board has granted 330,000 pardons and denied only 3,000. But despite the numbers, Young believes the convict herself is the only one who believes she has a chance at being excused.

This girl has no shame. She should be thanking her lucky stars that she was able to obtain a plea bargain before the videos surfaced. She should have to have to wear big red RM letters on her chest for the rest of her life. R-Rapist M-Murderess
