Episode Recap: Week Twelve (12/14) Midnight came and went and still no one returned to the loft. Jim was already asleep, but Bethenny and Dawna stayed awake to see who was coming back. Later on, Jim woke up and told the two women that the solution to this puzzle was "no one." He was right.
The final three arrived at Martha's Connecticut studios the next morning to learn that the teams were dissolved: they would each be on their own. Martha introduced them to four of her top executives who would spend the day interviewing each of the candidates. At the end of the day, one of them would be going home.
The interviewers made the candidates sweat by hammering them with the tough, interview questions that call for poised, nuanced answers. What do you most regret… why are you the right candidate… what have you learned from Martha Stewart…
Later in the day, Martha sat down with her executives to get their opinions. Reviews were mixed on Dawna, though they tilted to the positive. Everyone felt favorably toward Bethenny, pointing out her "scrappiness" as being a positive quality. But when it came down to Jim, no one seemed comfortable with him being a final-two contender.
Martha called the final three in to go over the interviewers' notes. She started with Bethenny and Dawna and then moved onto Jim. "Many things you do may be perceived as a liability, or disruptive," she told him. "And here at MSLO I just can't tolerate that sort of behavior." The cards were on the table. "The game's over, Jim. You're out of here."
Martha wrote a personal letter to Jim.
In the loft, Bethenny and Dawna each had the task of choosing three former candidates to become their employees. The two of them took a stroll down memory lane, flipping through a scrapbook of photos of past tasks to select just the right people for their new teams.
Dawna chose Amanda, Sarah, and Howie. Bethenny struggled with her choices, since she was on a losing team for so long and may have made some enemies. In the end, she chose Ryan, Jim, and Carrie, who was an unlikely choice since Bethenny signaled her out as being a weak player in a previous conference session.
In the morning, Bethenny and Dawna received the details for their final task: oversee two giant charity events. Bethenny was to run "Apple and Eve Presents the Big Apple Circus" to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of America. Dawna was to run "The Liz Claiborne Fashion Show and Charity Benefit," with proceeds going to Safe Horizon, which assists victims of domestic violence.
On their way to Big Apple Circus, Carrie seemed extremely uncertain about working for Bethenny, especially after Bethenny had "decimated" her in the conference room on a previous task. Jim tried to stand up for Bethenny, but he realized that "his girl" was backed into a corner since she had made no friends over the past 12 weeks.
Putting a circus together can be quite the circus in its own right, as Bethenny and her team discovered when they met with Jim from Big Apple Circus. The amount of components involved was truly overwhelming.
Dawna brought her team together at Liz Claiborne to go over roles and responsibilities before leaving to scope out the venue. At their massive venue, Dawna realized that the event had more pieces to fit together than she had originally anticipated.
Like Carrie, Ryan also seemed unsure of Bethenny's abilities, especially as they toured Crobar, the venue for the circus event. Jennifer, a representative from Boys and Girls Club, stopped by to check in with Bethenny, who was taken aback to learn that these events usually raise around one million dollars.
Later on at Liz Claiborne, Amanda didn’t ingratiate herself to Claiborne staff when she referred to one of the possible outfits for the fashion show as being "frumpy." Howie, who works in fashion, took the reigns to help select clothes, even though his background is on the business side of things and not on the creative end.
"I am on a team with a women who stabbed me in the back," Carrie adamantly told the cameras. She was deeply unsure how to support Bethenny, or why she even should. Jim put his arm around an increasingly bitter Carrie. "Such a beautiful girl to hold such a grudge," he told her.
There was much worry on the other team as well. Howie had already consumed a bottle of wine and was working on his second beer. He and Jim were having a grand-old time, but Dawna was concerned that she made a mistake in choosing Howie.
Carrie finally confronted Bethenny about all the issues she had with her. After discussing their conference-room session together, Carrie came to the conclusion that she could give Bethenny her "effort, but not my endorsement."
When they arrived at the showroom, Dawna saw what Amanda and Howie had picked out for the fashion show, and came away feeling that they "did not do a good job." An extremely hung-over Howie yawned and rubbed his head as Dawna went through the clothes. A Liz Claiborne rep came by to review the outfits and was not happy with the selections, either. "You might have to make some key changes," she told them coldly.
Ryan felt that Bethenny was getting sidetracked by trying to raise money while the circus crew mulled around all day waiting for directions. Caterers had to be dealt with, employees had to be trained, banners had to be hung… none of this was getting done. All the while, Bethenny stayed on her cell phone making calls.
Jim from Big Apple Circus pulled Bethenny aside to tell her that she had to take charge of the show or there wouldn’t be any. Jim demonstrated what Bethenny was doing to herself on this task by sliding a noose around his neck and pulling it tight.
To be continued...
