Episode Recap: Week Six (10/26)
The new Primarius fretted over who would be returning, but one thing was certain: almost no one hoped that it would be Jim. Needless to say, they weren’t exactly thrilled when the door opened and Jim sauntered in. He sounded sincere, though, when he said he was ready to be a team player and do all that he could to help win the next task. Buzz…. buzz… buzz… The loft’s scratchy doorbell repeatedly rang, surprising the candidates. Howie got up the nerve to greet their surprise visitor. He opened the door, and Martha Stewart stepped inside. She came by to say “hello” and to check out the loft. When Martha saw Jim, she made it clear that she expected him to be project manager that week. Early the next morning, Martha called the loft to ask everyone to meet her at her Connecticut studios at 9 a.m. They arrived to find Martha holding a dog and standing next to Marc Marrone, the host of “Pet Keeping” on TV. The task involved dogs. Each team was to work with four celebrity dog owners to negotiate a personal experience with each of them and their dogs that would be sold at the Beneful Celebrity Dog Auction to raise money for a charity called “Broadway Barks,” which is devoted to homeless dogs and providing funds for New York animal shelters. The winning team would be the one that raised the most money. Jim was excited to be working with the celebrities assigned to Primarius: Paul Sorvino & Amanda Sorvino, Susan Lucci, John Lithgow & Joanna Gleason, and Todd Oldham. Marcela, Matchstick’s project manager, felt that being in control was the most important thing for her, but she had to split her group into two teams to meet their deadline. Their celebrities were Chad Pennington, Fran Drescher, Bruce Villanch & Jordan Ballard, and Merv Griffin. Amanda made a personal connection with Fran Drescher because both of them triumphed over cancer. Fran even wrote a book about her experience. Dawna and Amanda took control over the negotiation as they tried to figure out exactly what Fran would be auctioning. Marcela took a back seat, keeping quiet as the other two hammered out the details. Football great Chad Pennington introduced Matchstick to Chloe the Basset hound. Ryan, a football fan, was thrilled to have this opportunity to negotiate with Chad. Jim, Carrie, and Howie met with Paul Sorvino and his daughter Amanda. They came upon the idea of having the auction winner hang out with Paul and Amanda, but also to have their own dog appear in a movie. Next celeb? Susan Lucci and her dog Oscar. Bethenny and Sarah suggested a day spent shopping, going to the spa, and out to lunch with Susan and her dog. Susan called the idea, “Diva doggie day.” On Broadway, in the theater where the musical “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” was playing, Jim, Howie, and Carrie met up with John Lithgow and Joanna Gleason, the play’s stars. They settled on a prize package that included seats to the show, a backstage meet-and-greet, and a chance to actually appear in a Broadway play! In another theater, members of Matchstick met with Bruce Villanch & Jordan Ballard, the stars of the musical “Hairspray.” Once again, Marcela fell by the wayside as Amanda and Dawna worked out an arrangement to have the winner enjoy seats for the show and dinner with the cast. The other Matchstick members met with legendary TV producer and pioneering talk show host Merv Griffin and his dog Charlie. While Leslie and Ryan tried to talk with Merv, David sat by himself typing away on his computer. Charles took notice when Merv told David that his constant typing was “very annoying.” At the end of a successful day, Primarius got together to have dinner, socialize, and bond, but while Sarah and Carrie also wanted to work on their upcoming meeting with Todd Oldham, Jim just wanted to have a good time. Howie, Carrie, and Bethenny handled the meeting with Todd Oldham and decided to have him design a pet-friendly room in the winner’s house. Legendary Broadway actress Bernadette Peters was the auction’s host, and she got the proceedings off with a resounding “woof!” After a few words from Bernadette and Martha Stewart, the auction got underway. Primarius sweated through the bulk of the auction when Matchstick’s Fran Drescher package went for $28,000! After the other packages were sold, it all came down to the Todd Oldham auction. If it didn’t bring in at least $13,000, someone from Primarius would be fired. Going once… going twice… sold! The Todd Oldham experience went for $17,000 Martha took a moment to congratulate both teams for a job well done. And for the curious, here’s all the results: Chad Pennington, $3,200; Fran Drescher, $28,000; Bruce Villanch & Jordan Ballard, $1,900; Merv Griffin, $7,250; Paul Sorvino, $15,000; Susan Lucci, $3,600; John Lithgow & Joanna Gleason, $8,500; Todd Oldham, $17,000. Matchstick brought in a total of $40,350, and Primarius a total of $44,100. In the boardroom, Martha asked David how he felt the negotiations went. David replied that a decision was made beforehand not to bombard the celebrity. Charles chimed in, telling Martha that David didn’t speak at all… other than the incident in Merv Griffin’s office with the laptop. Ryan put responsibility on Marcela for her “lack of leadership.” Dawna agreed with this assessment, but Amanda was torn between Marcela and David. Marcela defended her leadership style as a “quiet force to be reckoned with.” Marcela felt that David should be sent home, as did Leslie. When all was said and done, Martha asked for Marcela and David to return to the boardroom in a few minutes. Martha asked David and Marcela why they wanted to be an executive for MSLO. David eloquently replied that he wanted to run Martha’s website and make it the premiere site on the Internet. Marcela responded by saying she wanted this job “more than anything,” and felt that she understood the business because of her knowledge of food and publishing. Charles felt that David didn’t do very much in the week’s task, but complimented him on his description of his ideal job at MSLO. Martha questioned Marcela’s leadership abilities, but then turned her focus to David’s inexperience. While she predicted great things for David in the future, Martha felt that he wasn’t seasoned enough to become her apprentice, and so she said “goodbye.” Source: http://www.nbc.com/The_Apprentice:_Martha_Stewart/recaps/week6_p1.shtml
