Episode 9: The Girl Who Breaks Down America’s Next Top Model 7, Episode 8: Lost In Translation
by Phil Kural -- 11/16/2006
It’s time for the girls to pack their bags! This week, they head off to Barcelona, the fashion capital of Spain, to take part in a Secret deodorant commercial shoot. While some girls struggle with being in front of the camera, Melrose excels yet again. What will the backlash be? You’d better click here to find out!
Last week, action and beauty came together in a sky high (but not really) photo shoot. Some girls rose to the occasion, like Melrose, who despite being hated by everyone, continues to do well. However, Anchal’s problems with her roommates carried from the photo shoot right up to when she met with the judges – and she was sent home. We’re down to six, so let’s see what happens during this episode.
The girls are on their way home from the elimination ceremony, talking in the car and saying that Anchal was too naïve for the competition. Amanda admits to the camera that she thought her sister Michelle was going home. Michelle also tells the camera that Amanda knows she is confused about what she wants to do, and she really only got involved with modeling because her sister was doing it. Oh, Michelle – but you’re so good!
At home, Tyra Mail is waiting. It tells the girls, “You think Ms. Tyra acts a fool? Wait until you meet her girl!” Jaeda says that the hardest thing in the competition is missing her boyfriend. Melrose admits to the camera that she doesn’t hear what the other girls say about her, but she knows they don’t like her. Michelle admits to MY CariDee and Amanda that she can’t make this her dream yet, while MY CariDee tells the camera that the twins are only there for the experience, she’s there because it’s her dream, and it would kill her to go home before girls who don’t want it as badly.
The next day, the girls arrive at a theater and meet an actress, Tasha Smith, who is also a friend of Tyra’s. Of course, we get clips of Tyra “acting.” Notice the quotes. The first lesson the girls are getting is called the “silly dilly” and the girls are told to get loose. Everyone gets crazy, as Tasha tells them to “get ugly.” She can’t seem to get Melrose to “get ugly” so I’m thinking that she’s blind. Michelle says that Amanda is better at acting, so will do better with this challenge.
Next, the girls will be doing something called “dump it out,” where they’ll need to let out all their feelings. Eugena admits to feeling out of place, while Michelle talks about wanting to try harder, but she just isn’t sure if this is for her. Melrose goes off on how much better she is than everyone else, prompting Eugena to tell the camera that Melrose is bipolar.
Jaeda, in nothing out of the ordinary, says she is sick of her look and feels like a boy. MY CariDee cries to the group and tells them that she’s sick of people thinking that it’s not hard to be a model, since she tries so hard. She also reveals to the other girls that she tried to kill herself once, and she finally feels like she is doing something right. Everyone is in shock and when MY CariDee is finished, she admits to not knowing that would come out.
MY CariDee rejoins the other girls and Tasha says that for their challenge, they will need to channel all their expressions. They will be making a silent film. The girl who does the best will appear on an episode of One Tree Hill! So Tasha dictates to the girls what she wants them to do and it really looks like they are all doing terrible. Jaeda says she is the only girl who ate a whole lemon and swallowed it, while Michelle has issues keeping down prune juice. It’s obvious that Melrose or MY CariDee is going to win, while Michelle tells the camera that she is “200% sure” she won’t win this challenge. The girls wrap up and Tasha sends them on their way, saying the winner will be revealed soon.
When the girls get Home, MY CariDee tells her boyfriend on the phone about how she revealed her secret. He supports her and she says how liberated she now feels. Tyra Mail has also arrived, which comes with a disk for the girls to play, containing the winner of the challenge. It’s MY CariDee! We see her film, in which Tyra appears. She begins to be dubbed in Spanish, and the girls aren’t sure what’s going on – until Tyra pops out and tells them that they are going to Spain! Everyone begins chanting and screaming as a matador comes out to dance with them. So weird. Jaeda says making it this far really makes her feel like she has a chance.
MY CariDee arrives at the set of One Tree Hill and tapes her scene. Everyone seems to enjoy her on set and the director says that she did a great job for her first time. On that note, MY CariDee says it’s been a long day, and now she’s ready for a bubble bath!
Later that day, the girls pack up and head to Spain. We see their arrival in Barcelona, as everyone is very excited, even though they can’t read the Spanish. Tyra Mail tells the girls that there is some bad news – it’s time to learn the local laws. Melrose tells the camera that she doesn’t want to compete with Spanish women since they are so beautiful. The bus approaches a Spanish male, Christian, who is also a model. He gives the girls each a kiss and some roses. He joins the girls in their bus as they pick up other male models: Daniel, Victor, Lucas, Nacho (like the cheese), and Andrew. The group then heads to dinner, where the girls are told via Tyra Mail that they will be delivering a commercial in the native tongue of Barcelona – Catalan. Not only that, but the girls will be making out with one of the guys they are with right now, so it’s time to pair up!
Some of the girls begin practicing right away, while Jaeda’s partner, Nacho, not only doesn’t want to practice, but tells Jaeda that he doesn’t like black girls! Okay, I’m going to say it – what an A**HOLE! She should have turned to him and said, “With a name like Nacho, you don’t have any room to be picky.” Anyway, Melrose says that it’s not right what he’s doing to Jaeda and when the girls head out, Jaeda tells the camera that the experience in Barcelona is ruined now for her. However, everyone perks up when they see their new digs, which is a beautiful apartment in Spain. Tyra Mail tells the girls that it’s their new lair, and the challenge winner will get first choice of bedroom – of course, MY CariDee picks the room with the biggest bed. Melrose is pissed, and I’m pleased.
The next day, the girls get ready for their shoot. Melrose says she stayed up an extra two hours just to learn her lines and get it down. MY CariDee tries to roll her tongue but says she can’t. That’s okay, girl, I can’t either! Michelle admits that she hasn’t kissed a boy since she was ten, and just hopes she doesn’t suck, while Jaeda says she is a very loyal girlfriend and feels it’s rude to kiss other guys.
Tyra greets everyone when they arrive at the shoot and says that Barcelona is the fashion capital of Spain. She quickly finds out about Jaeda’s counterpart not liking black girls and tells her to give him a kiss that will make him love them! As Tyra whisks herself away, out swooshes Jay Manuel to tell the girls that their commercial today will be for Secret deodorant, and they will need to show that they can hold it down when the pressure is on, especially since the commercial won’t be in English.
Hair and makeup begin and the girls get to meet heir director. MY CariDee is beginning to get overwhelmed and Michelle knows that the other girls worry about how her kiss is going to be, while she doesn’t even think it’s a big deal. Speaking of Michelle – she’s up first! She has some problems with her Catalan, but who can blame her? She does an okay job with the kiss and even Jay says that although he thought it would be the worst part, it was actually the best. Oh Jay – shut up, you bottom! Finally, I said it! It took me seven seasons, but I finally got that out, and surprisingly, I feel so much better. Tasha was right – it does help to vent!
Eugena is up next and tells the camera that she acted the way she knew they wanted to see her, despite the fact that she had issues with the language barrier. Jay feels that he wasn’t expecting much but she did quite well. Out comes Amanda, who Jay basically just goes on to say was boring and not sexy. I’m going to have to agree. She didn’t really do much at all, and if I wasn’t told who was who, I wouldn’t have been able to tell which one I was watching!
Here comes Jaeda! Before she even begins, she’s already defeated and frustrated. She gives it the good ol’ college try, and eventually does get through the commercial and the kiss, but hopes that she will never have to do it again. All this is completely the opposite of Melrose, who goes out there and gives the director and Jay what they want. She’s all over the place and seems crazy to me, but Jay is eating it up, telling her that she was one of the best reads of the day. Melrose, of course, does her whole “Oh my God, REALLY?” routine. It’s getting old.
MY CariDee is the last for the day, and Jay compares her Catalan to a mixture of Swedish and Cantonese. She’s very nervous and gets frustrated that she can’t get the language down, but her make-out session is by far the longest of the group. This is too funny. I actually can’t believe how long it lasts. Boyfriend, who?
So the girls wrap up and head home. Tyra Mail says that they will meet with the judges tomorrow. MY CariDee just isn’t sure what the judges are going to think about her commercial since she knows it was her first bomb of the season. Whatever happens though, it’s going to be rough – that’s one thing she knows. My fingers are already crossed. If A.J. and Brooke can be sent home after one bad week, it could happen to MY CariDee as well!
The girls file into the judging room like they are being led to their deaths! Tyra reminds them of the prizes and introduces them to the judges, including Denis Roviera, the director for their commercial. Before we get to the judging though, we see the completed version of the commercial, and it looks pretty good! However, now it’s time to look at how the girls did during each of their takes.
It’s time for individual evaluations, and Michelle is first. She has some issues with the wording and Tyra tells her that she has to listen more to the words that she is trying to say. Eugena goes next and Tyra thinks she is one of the best so far. Umm, she only saw two girls so far! Everyone agrees that Eugena actually tried though, and for that, they are grateful.
I’m not going to lie – MY CariDee was NOT good this week with the commercial, as we get to see her long make-out. Nigel says that she appeared drunk in the commercial and even Tyra says it was disappointing and looked amateur. Jaeda is up next and even warns the judges that it’s not good. Twiggy agrees, calling Jaeda’s commercial a car crash, adding that she can’t act! Tyra looks for something positive and not only tells the judges that Jaeda had problems since her male model didn’t like black girls, but that her face caught the light and made her look radiant – at times. Nothing like a backhanded compliment from Ms. Banks.
Up next is Melrose, who the judges agree wasn’t perfect, but all agree that she did a great job. Denis says he could easily direct her and Twiggy goes on to give her great praise. Melrose tells the judges that she was up for two extra hours studying and Tyra says it showed. Amanda is last and it seems like the judges are lukewarm on her commercial. They like the kiss, but feel she fell a bit flat.
Now, it’s time to deliberate, and as the judges do just that, we see the girls in the holding room ganging up on Melrose about her “staying up two extra hours” comment. Eugena tells her that she’s just trying to make the others look bad, while Melrose disagrees, but says she is sick of them all. Me-yow!
Here’s what the judges had to say about the girls:
Eugena was actually a pleasant surprise this week, showing potential and finally showing vulnerability in her commercial.
Melrose had one of the best commercials in top model history, which I disagree with, and Nigel says that she sold him on the product, but he still feels that she looks a bit old.
Jaeda prepared them on how badly she was going to do, and lived up to it. She can’t act, but she has amazing bone structure.
Michelle was awful, and Nigel says that Amanda is beginning to be the twin to watch. Tyra disagrees and feels that Michelle looked radiant.
All the judges felt like MY CariDee rested for this photo shoot and really didn’t pull through. She might feel that she has been doing so well and doesn’t have to worry, but she better think twice.
The girls enter the room again and face the judges. The first name that Tyra calls is… Melrose! When handing her the photo, Tyra tells Melrose that staying up those extra hours really paid off. Cue the eye roll from Eugena to Michelle! The next girl called is Eugena, who Tyra says is doing well in Barcelona. She tells Eugena that the judges see a new light in her and they like it. Amanda is called next and told that her commercial “wasn’t so dreadful” but they want her to be amazing. She’s followed by Michelle, who Tyra says looked great in the commercial and has a spunk and fire about her, but has to show that on camera.
Jaeda and MY CariDee step forward. Tyra says she only has one photo and the girl not called will need to pack her bags and go home. MY CariDee is told that she is the girl that is always so full of life and takes great photos. The judges love her – until today. Tyra says that one of the prizes is being a CoverGirl, and they aren’t sure that she can deliver a commercial. Jaeda is told that she has had nine lives. She has been in the bottom two more than once, and the judges are beginning to doubt her passion, but they love her bone structure. However, they need more. You think? Tyra asks which girl should go home? The girl who the judges don’t think can deliver a commercial or the girl who needs more time? Tyra pulls out MY CariDee’s photo and says that she feels MY CariDee can deliver a commercial. She gets her photo saying she has never been so happy to see herself.
Tyra gives Jaeda a hug and sends her on her way. Jaeda tells the camera that she thinks she can do this now, and has much more confidence. She wasn’t happy to be sent home and doesn’t want to leave, but will put a positive spin on things and keep going. It took her a long time to get over her hair, but is faithful that things will work out in the end for her. I wish she would love her hair – everyone else does!
Next week, the girls will do their go-sees! At the photo shoot, it looks like MY CariDee will be making an enemy, and it looks like Nigel! We also see her getting scolded by Tyra for saying something rude. This can’t be good. I knew they were setting her up for failure so that Melrose can win. It’s a conspiracy! Here’s how I rate the girls for next week:
Melrose
Amanda
Eugena
MY CariDee
Michelle
Looks like it’s time to finally say goodbye to one of the twins.
