Episode 9 Insider Clips The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 9 Insider Clips - Pardon Me While I Rant
by Heathyr Fields Ford -- 03/20/2006
Most weeks, Charla and Mirna’s behavior is enough to drive people to drink, scream, or throw things. Are they the reason Heathyr is so worked up? Or is her rage directed at someone else?
Begin Major Rant
CBS, I am sick of faux drama trying to force me to hang onto the edge of my seat. I am sick of you not believing in the drama of your own product enough that you feel the need to manufacture it with music and ridiculous clips back and such. I am sick of self-entitled, whiny little witches getting so much self-entitled, whiny face time on this show. I am sick of racers who don’t understand the meeting of the word “race.” I am sick of constantly doubting the producers’ manipulativeness in regards to timings.
For example, “We must wait 12 hours for a storm to pass” or “two charter buses tons of hours from now” or “non-elimination leg but an Intersection” or “plan a trip during a major religious holiday so airports or full.” THOSE sorts of manipulations. I am sick of most of the race being airport-driven and not task-driven. I am sick of Charla & Mirna. I am sick of pathetic tasks like “let someone drive you while you’re belted in so safe nothing could hurt you” instead of “want to jump ahead? Belt in super safe and drive yourself on a scaled-down stunt.” And I am sick of All-Stars.
This season has driven me to the point of not wanting to watch it again. I honestly do not know if I will be back watching next season. I am THAT annoyed. My other half is only watching because it’s family time with the kids, but we’ll watch a movie together instead. I don’t know. I’ll decide during hiatus, but right now, given the choice? I’d read the damned spoilers and not watch the show. It’s irritating me THAT much.
I am sick of Charla & Mirna.
End Major Rant
On to the clips!
Elimination Station
Amber Gives Mary a Swimming Lesson: Amber asks Rob, who is in the pool, if he heard who got eliminated. She tells him to guess. He guesses Uchenna & Joyce, and he’s right, so this is during the credits and must be a snap from the last episode. With that, and some jaunty music, we head into the real clip as John Vito & Jill say they are okay with the final four. Rob thinks Ozzie & Danny have a good shot, but he’s not rooting for anybody. Mary says they should all get together and do something since it’s non-elim. They decide Mary needs to get in the pool and Amber can teach her to swim. She’s trying to show her how you put your face in, blow bubbles, then turn to the side.
Talk to the fishes, listen to the fishies, as I always said when I taught swim lessons. (Well, kiddie swim lessons. When I taught swim lessons at college, I didn’t tell university professors that exact phrase!)
Amber works on the mechanics of the arm stroke for basic freestyle, and then tells Mary to try it while blowing bubbles. And if my Internet doesn’t keep stopping every ten seconds to “communicate” for two minutes, this is going to be a short article! Ah, here we go. Mary doesn’t think she can do two things at once. Mary has a mental block that putting her head down, she’ll be trapped under water. Amber thinks Mary does know how to swim, and it is just a fear to overcome. She takes off and mostly swims across the width of the pool. It’s great, and she’s excited. Looks like she needed a little encouragement (or attention) and voila.
Pit Stop Cam
None at this time.
Mini-rant: There have been hardly any of these. Why bother with this section if you’re not going to have one or two at least every week? End mini-rant
Mat Chats
Oswald & Danny: Phil asks if they love Hong Kong. They love it. Danny’s jumping up and down laughing about having no money. Then Danny’s all macho studly about the stunt driving, and Oswald owns up to being all scared. Danny likens it to the bungee jump, which Phil remembers. Danny says it didn’t go over the all the way. Phil says it’s because he’s too big, so it didn’t tip. They laugh with each other, and Oswald refuses to comment since he has to race with Danny. Then they’re all like “look at how trim he is” and “thousands and thousands of dollars to get that” and it’s so cute.
Danny wants to take the gnome home. Oswald finds it unanatomically correct. Danny chants, “Gnomey gnomey gnomey.” Other than their weird Mirna love and Dustin & Kandice dislike (if the editing and Mirna’s word are accurate, both of which I doubt), I really like these two. Phil brings up the shopping (I assume from last time) and how Hong Kong made them infamous. They laugh.
Dustin & Kandice: Dustin & Kandice have been having dreams of the finish line, they tell Phil. Phil wants details. Kandice says he’s standing on your mat, they come in and see him and see no other teams. Dustin does the Phil impression, “And then you say, ‘Four continents,’ etc.,” and they win. He then asks what will happen if he tells them they win the race (for real). They figure tears, laughter, the whole gamut.
Kandice says she would be able to finish school without kicking her legs anymore (that could be SO wrong out of context). Dustin wants to buy a house and stop renting, put herself through graduate school, and be done with the month-to-month struggle. Phil states that a million dollars couldn’t buy this experience, and they agree.
They feel strong, and the greeter wondered if they were sisters as the women finish each others’ sentences some now. They say they get that a lot. Phil asks if they’re stronger now than in the beginning, and they think they are. Dustin says they’ve learned to conserve energy this time around.
Phil switches to Charla & Mirna talk. He asks why people have issues with them. Dustin & Kandice clarify they can only speak for themselves, and they say that Charla & Mirna are not afraid to lie, do, or say anything, etc., to move ahead. They say they thought they knew what they were doing, and now they know for sure, and it is startling to them, Dustin explains. Mirna gets louder and louder and will say anything she wants to get her way, and she “wins” if you back off. Dustin says from now on, they are going to get a hold of mangers ASAP and get the order laid out, etc. Kandice agrees, and she likens it to grade school, but needed. She does call them very smart women, and they both give my least favorite team practically ever their props. I like them for that.
Charla & Mirna: I honestly don’t even want to watch this one, as Mirna’s victim stance makes me want to shriek and throw things. Her wide-eyed “woe is poor widdle me” is ludicrous, and I almost think she is worse than Ma Weaver in her lunacy and self-involvement and hypocrisy.
Phil says that Dustin & Kandice said Charla & Mirna were manipulating the list at the airport. Mirna is all “not me” and that Dustin & Kandice are manipulative and don’t own up to it like other racers before did. She preaches that they are all fed up with the beauty queens. She believes that talking with the other two teams until late into the night at the last Pit Stop brought to light who the beauty queens really are. OH. MY. GOD. I want to slap her. I am SO over this season, and I cannot wait for it to end.
Phil wants clarification. Mirna says that they were led to believe that Dustin & Kandice were Yielded in their season, but they’re the ones running around Yielding, etc. Phil prods a bit about them being the first all-female team. Mirna says good luck because God is a stronger power and karma is at play. Interesting. Mirna & Charla think it is them, and if not them, Oswald & Danny. Phil asks Charla what she says to the teams who maybe had doubts, and she quips, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
Eric & Danielle: Phil brings up what Charla & Mirna said about the problem with Dustin & Kandice. Eric pouts that this is true. Phil wonders whether or not Charla & Mirna are running a fair race. They say that Charla & Mirna are not always and using a lot of stuff, such as Charla. Eric decides he’s going to tuck his arms in his shirt and play armless. Heh. They talk about how they’ve been playing nice so far, and it’s not working. Phil wonders if can come back at this point, and they are not sure. If they are on the same flight, Eric is not worried about it. And then the clip quits on me.
Episode Clips
Oswald & Danny Step It Up: Oswald & Danny are in a cab, and Oswald remarks that they will be stepping it up, because at times, they hadn’t had to, since they’ve been so far ahead, etc. For their own sake, they will be stepping it up as a morale boost. The last leg was a combination of anxiety and lack of communication, and it was an unpleasant leg, they both agree.
Oswald is glad it happened on a leg where they had that cushion of Uchenna & Joyce being so far behind, and he hopes they will rise above and do better all subsequent legs. Oswald explains that Danny gave him carte blanche to not be so conscious of his feelings, and just be firm when feeling strongly about it, and vice versa. No sissy-footing around. They’ll get over an argument, he continues, and there’s no room for error.
Early-Morning Gathering: Charla & Mirna and Oswald & Danny are waiting outside the China Air office. The boys joke with the girls about how they figured they were already in Hong Kong because of how they work the airports. They discuss a flight that leaves soon, but is a tight flight. Danny’s all, “You love those risks, you’re a risky girl!” and then jokes that they shared a room together and a line together; people will talk. Oswald quips that Charla’s husband won’t be happy. Danny mentions a skimpy towel she was wearing, and his skimpy underwear comes up, and he jokes that he doesn’t have a husband at home. Oswald says he was advertising for one. Heh.
Oswald & Danny Try to Tame Mirna: Oswald says to let the airport guy be for now, and he says not to annoy him to the point they won’t help out. Oswald & Danny by themselves share that they are trying to control Mirna’s pushiness and loudness so that the airport personnel will want to help everyone. Oswald says working with them has been a test to his calmness. Mine, too.
Stroll Down Memory Lane: Oswald & Danny talk about their Hong Kong leg last time, and how they had the time to step out of the race in a way and do their own thing, such as coffee, shopping, cologne. This leg, no such luck, they figure, but it brings good memories and energy to them. Oswald feels good about the lead they have so far, but will not be complacent.
A Fun Time Was Had By All: Mirna & Charla in the cab. Mirna looks good. She talks about how they chitchatted with the other two teams at the Pit Stop, and she figures it’ll be a final three to remember, and there is a lot of vengeance towards the “fake girls.” She calls Dustin & Kandice the Yield queens and says it was “one Yield too many.” IT IS A GAME. Duh.
Charla is ready to see the sparks fly. Mirna says the mind games started at the Pit Stop will continue, and that at a meal, they reminded all the people about the Yield, and the girls tried to change the subject. Well, duh! Dustin & Kandice are NOT stupid, and they did a strategic use of the Yield, one of the few in the game’s history, and they are still catching hell about it, so of course they want to change the subject. Duh.
Mirna Has Unpleasant Memories: Dustin & Kandice are in a cab behind Charla & Mirna. Mirna is all, “My friend, go fast, we don’t want them to see us,” and she’s freaking out, pointing to the guy to turn any direction to just lose them. She’s all panicked, and then gets all stressed. She’s rubbing her forehead and brings up how Dustin & Kandice followed them for one hour with their taxi; she and Charla paid $200 and they wouldn’t pay one penny. Then she does a fake laugh and fake voice as she imitates the true classy all-female team on the race about “it’s a misunderstanding” and other such drivel. How does this witch live with herself?
Calm After the Storm: Dustin & Kandice are on a plane, and Dustin says she feels bad about the airport conflict, but Charla & Mirna are so pushy that you have to push back. She is glad they are on the flight, but not happy about how it went down. She doesn’t feel that Charla & Mirna were playing fair about it. Two other teams got on the list legitimately, and this bothers her. Kandice says that the hard part is that it’s a game and people use tactics, and Charla & Mirna’s tactics haven’t been the same as theirs. Kandice says they’re not the type to let that sort of behavior go. She wants to keep the peace, then she quips, “World peace,” and it’s amazing the contract between the two teams.
Bad Luck for Dustin & Kandice: Charla says that the beauty queens will steal tickets, backstab, and do anything to just win the race, and their morals are different than hers and Mirna’s. GAG. Mirna talks again about being up all night long with the other two teams. She waxes on about how ultra phony the girls are and the information they shared. Mirna talks about how everyone thought they had been Yielded, and that same night, the Yield episode was on, and they had already Yielded someone else. Mirna says there’s nothing wrong with Yielding, but stupid decisions that don’t benefit the race out of spitefulness don’t reflect well on people. Mirna doesn’t know any other team that’s Yielded so many teams, so they’re the Yield teams.
What damn planet are these people on? Neither of their Yields were done out of spite. Ridiculous.
Eric & Danielle Keep Soldiering On: Eric shares that this was a complete 180 from his last race, that he and Jeremy did smoothly until the end, but this time, they’re at back of the pack most the time. One thing after another for them, but they keep trying and sticking in there. He hopes to stick out the next leg, and they will deserve their final-three slot.
The Situation is Not the Same: Kandice says it’s different because Mirna takes control of every situation and is very aggressive. Dustin says she’s like the dictator. Karlyn & Lyn were commentary, not trying to take control, Kandice continues. Dustin says Mirna will tell you where to stand, how to talk, etc., and they laugh about making a beauty queen sandwich out of her.
Kandice says they’re going on way too much about her and giving her too much credit. Dustin wonders when it will no longer work for her, and tell her that it’s unacceptable. GOD. Can I watch? PLEASE?! She needs it. Kandice says Mirna’s good at what she does, it’s a perfected art, and she won’t take that away from her. Again, honest commentary on her, complimentary when need be (i.e. not wanting to take away her “art” and such). Who’s the ugly one in this rivalry? Bzzt, Charla & Mirna for 10,000, Alex.
