Episode 8: The World According to Lisi Surviving Fiji, Episode 8: The World According to Lisi
by David Bloomberg -- 04/06/2007
We’ve seen snippets throughout the season of the way Lisi thinks about things. But this week, we are treated to the full Lisi – lots of quotes and insights into the way she thinks. Be prepared for a long, strange trip!
Last week, we said an overdue goodbye to Rocky – though we’ll see him every week until the end of the season as he sits in the jury. We also saw Yau-Man find the immunity idol and hide a fake one, and we saw Lisi reveal info to Alex and Edgardo about the immunity idol on her beach – which, if the previews are right, will be used against her. That is why people should use their right to remain silent! It’s not entirely clear why Dreamz voted against Rocky instead of Lisi, though he probably didn’t want to piss off his alliance. How will the game turn this week? Let’s find out!
We begin at Ravu, the morning after Tribal Council. Alex says he and Edgardo are in two different alliances – they are with Mookie and Dreamz, but also with Lisi. He feels like he’s in a pretty good place.
Edgardo talks to Mookie about the hidden immunity idol, noting that one of the clues talks about it being where they sleep. Edgardo thinks they should just tear the place apart to find it.
So the two of them and Alex start digging while Lisi and Dreamz are still sleeping. They’re trying to figure out exactly where the peak of the cave is, as Mookie tells us he knows he has a pact with them, but he feels he needs to take care of himself. Good thinking, considering he’s the sole remaining original Ravu member on this tribe!
Mookie finds it! They are literally just feet away from Dreamz and Lisi as they silently celebrate before piling all the dirt back into the hole. Mookie tells he hopes it’s smooth sailing from here. Good luck on that one!
The three idol hunters run into the jungle to unwrap their find. Alex talks to us about how “we” found it, while Mookie says it changes the game for him. In the jungle, Mookie says the three of them will use it together. If at any time they find out that any of them are going to go, they will use it. If they get split up somehow, he doesn’t know how they will pass it on (the only way I can think they might get split up is if one of them gets sent to Exile Island during a Tribal Council – there isn’t going to be another tribal switch-up at this stage of the game).
They all agree that nobody else – especially Lisi – can know they have the idol. Edgardo says she can’t know because even though she is loyal, she’s unstable. No kidding! They’re afraid if they tell her, she’ll want to use it the wrong way. And they aren’t telling Dreamz about it – at least not yet – because he will probably tell Cassandra.
You know how above I noted that Mookie talked about changing the game for himself? He expands on this now, adding that it could be said they all have the idol, but in his mind, it’s only in one pocket – his own!
As Mookie is cleaning up the dirt from their hole, Lisi wakes up, surprising him a bit. She asks jokingly if he was doing a little idol digging. He says yes, and she says that’s where she suspects it might be. I bet it isn’t! Anymore…
Lisi tells us she believes Alex told Mookie about the clues because she caught Mookie flipping through the dirt. In what just might be the most ironic thing ever said on Survivor, she continues telling us, “Dude, you’re going to have to wake up really, really early to fool an old cat like me. What’s wrong with you?!” I bet she’s sitting at home watching right now just shaking her head.
Lisi starts doing her own digging and Mookie says he already dug at that spot and the idol wasn’t there. That’s actually a good cover, because she is bound to notice that the dirt is looser there than elsewhere. But then he offers to help her dig as he tells us how amusing he finds it all – and he’s right!
While we haven’t seen them yet this week, there is another tribe still playing the game. The Motoans get a visit from some natives bearing treemail. The note says they have to learn a traditional Fijian dance from the natives – they have two hours to learn and then will compete against the other tribe this afternoon. The winners stay for a feast at the village.
Yau-Man volunteers to sit out because he has no rhythm. Somehow, I can’t imagine he’ll be worse than Boo, but who knows.
The dance lessons start and Earl with his “Michael Jackson moves” is the star pupil. Michael Jackson moves? Good thing there are no young boys on the island. (Oh like you didn’t know that was coming!)
Boo is doing about like I expected he would. Or as Earl says, he’s doing “the white guy thing.” Yeah, that would be me.
Back at Ravu, Alex tells us that size, strength, and agility are not going to help them on this one. Like it helped them on most of the previous few?! Actually, he notes that, saying it’s frustrating losing to “a bunch of girls and an old guy.” I guess Boo and Earl don’t count.
Lisi seems to be the weak dancing link here, and it may be because, as she tells us, she doesn’t take challenges seriously. She doesn’t think they should get all worried about winning so they can eat food. Um. What? Does she ever make sense?
The men paint their faces as Lisi just goofs off and annoys Dreamz, who tells us she made him miserable at Moto and should be worried now. If they lose immunity, he says, “she will be the next person voted off.”
Time for the dance-off! The tribes meet at the village circle, and host Jeff Probst says he’s glad to see everybody has embraced the mood so far, with war paint and the like. Lisi laughs stupidly. I’m sorry, but that’s the only way it can be described.
Probst says they will perform their dance in front of some Fijian judges – Simon, Randy, and Paula. OK, maybe not, but it is two guys and a woman. They will be judged on appearance, authenticity, and spirit. The reward, as noted, is a Fijian feast – chicken, pork, seafood – and Fijian singing. And of course, the winners send a loser to Exile Island.
Moto is up and the music begins. Earl is the lead dancer and he’s pretty damned good. The look on his face shows he is both concentrating and is also truly embracing it. Boo looks like he’s just worried about falling down. And the women do nicely.
Ravu’s turn. They don’t have a lead dancer so much, as all four guys are in front. Lisi is in back where she can presumably be hidden by the guys. Alex, Mookie, and Dreamz look good, but Edgardo gets lost and has to keep looking at Alex to see what he should be doing. They end with a backflip from Dreamz.
Here at “We’ll Be the Judge of That!” I have to say that Moto was definitely better. They played to Earl’s strength and let that speak for the tribe. Meanwhile, Ravu tried to hide Lisi’s weakness, but it seemed more disjointed overall.
What do the on-site judges have to say? The judge I dub as Randy says, “You both did your things, dawgs.” “Paula” says, “You were both great. I want you both to win.” Then she starts crying. And the one I will call Simon says, “It was like when you’re sitting out in the Fijian jungle and a cabaret group comes through. Or maybe it’s a cruise ship.
Obviously, none of those things actually happened. The judges talk amongst themselves in Fijian and then give comments. They say both tribes did well with appearance and spirit. That only leaves the dance itself as the deciding factor. They say Moto was very organized and the leader was very good. Ravu was out of rhythm. So that means Moto wins!
Moto sends Lisi back to Exile Island, with Earl explaining it’s so nobody else will get any clues. Ha, she fooled you by blabbing the clues to almost the whole rest of the tribe! So there! And, of course, it’s been found. So there again!
Lisi and Ravu leave while Moto gets treated to Fijian singing and, of course, the feast. Boo can’t believe how big the lobsters are, while Stacy talks about how incredible it is in general. Then they dance into the night. Earl tells us the celebration has brought them all together as a group, rather than still being split as old Ravu and old Moto. Uh huh, just wait ‘til the next time you have to vote, Earl.
Things are as celebratory on Exile Island, with a bit storm pouring down on Lisi. She complains to us about how Ravu can’t seem to win “even the simplest challenges.” Um, weren’t you the one saying they shouldn’t worry about winning challenges? Guess you’ve changed your tune, eh? She says it sucks to be there, and she’s practically crying as she says it. She feels like quitting. What, again?
At Moto the next day, Yau-Man is up early starting the fire while Earl and Michelle go for their “usual morning meeting.” He says she’s his little spy, so she briefs him on what’s going on in the tribe.
Earl tells Michelle he thinks Boo could stick with them in the right situation, but Cassandra thinks he’ll flip. Earl, however, believes Stacy is the one who will flip to Alex and Edgardo automatically when a merger occurs. Hey, Earl, what happened to coming together as a group?
So Michelle thinks they should vote out Stacy first, which will hopefully scare Boo into sticking with them. Scare him? Please. Michelle continues that ideally they’d like to get rid of Stacy before the merge. She continues that it’s not just that Stacy will likely flip, but that they are essentially “carbon copies” when it comes to function, and there isn’t room in the tribe for the both of them.
At Ravu, the four guys are talking about their situation. Dreamz makes the mistake of talking about being happy he made it this far, to the jury. Don’t do that – it makes it too easy for people to vote you off! He thinks tomorrow will bring the merge. And as long as Cassandra is in the game, she’s on “my side.” He emphasizes that he has her. Unfortunately, that’s how he says it – “my” and “I” rather than “we.” That can’t be taken as a good sign by the others.
Indeed, Edgardo says he’s going to keep his eye on Dreamz, because he’s worried Dreamz may flip rather than bringing Cassandra to them. I agree.
Treemail brings as arrow with a note:
Everybody gets their shot.
It’s immunity you desire.
Ready, aim… make it count,
tonight somebody loses fire!
Alex says they need to win the next immunity badly because they don’t want to go into a merge four to six. Mookie and Edgardo have apparently shot a bow and arrow before, and Edgardo even professes a lot of confidence in his abilities and says this is his time to shine. Uh oh.
The tribes and Lisi show up for the challenge. They will test their skills with three different weapons. The first round is blow darts. Each tribe member gets a shot, and whoever ends up closest to the center scores a point for their tribe. Second round is spear throwing, worth two points. Third round is bow and arrow, for three points. The tribe with the most points wins. We’re not told yet what happens in case of a tie. Cassandra sits out for Moto.
And they’re… blowing! Lisi blows first and hits the third ring outside the bull’s eye. Stacy goes next and hits the first ring outside it. Mookie hits just inside Stacy’s. Michelle misses the target. Dreamz gets a little closer than Mookie, but Yau-Man gets even closer. Alex then takes the lead back before Boo hits the bull’s eye. It all comes down to Edgardo for Ravu. And he doesn’t do well enough, so Earl doesn’t even have to do it.
So it’s on to spears. Lisi misses the target, as do Stacy, Mookie, and Michelle. Dreamz barely hits the target, but hey, it’s the best shot so far. Boo misses short and Edgardo overshoots. Yau-Man moves far back behind the line and does a running throw that hits just one ring outside the bull’s eye! The Ravu members look at each other, stunned. Alex moves up to throw and does this horrible sidearm sling that misses. So Earl once again doesn’t have to participate.
Time for the bows and arrows. If Ravu does win, Probst says they will go to sudden death with the bow and arrow – “one shooter, one arrow, one winner.” Oh you just know Ravu will win so it will come down to Edgardo’s shooting.
First, Lisi misses. So does Stacy. Mookie blows it too. Michelle barely hits the target and then Dreamz beats it. Boo misses. Alex does likewise. Yau-Man studies the arrows and Probst asks what he could possibly be looking for. Yau-Man says simply, “straightest possible arrow.” He takes it, gets down on one knee, pulls it back, and hits two rings outside the bull’s eye, taking the lead for Moto again! But wait, it has all come down to Edgardo, the bow pro. He places the arrow and pulls back – not at all looking as comfortable as he claimed to be. Heck, I have better form than he does! He looks totally uncomfortable and I have to wonder what the hell he was talking about earlier. He fires and… completely misses! What the…? Moto wins! And Edgardo looked ridiculous. He didn’t even get them to sudden death.
The defeated Ravu tribe arrives back at camp and Mookie notes that this will be his eighth Tribal Council. They all talk about how bad they sucked. But Lisi tells us she’s “done with the losers.” She is “surrounded by losers.” They know they suck, “and when you know that you suck, you suck.” Ah, the philosophy of Lisi.
Lisi tells Alex there was no reason for “you guys” to lose today – so she doesn’t even count herself as part of the tribe, apparently. She bluntly adds that she doesn’t think they’ll win the next reward challenge, which means she will go back to Exile Island. She feels like her time is up. “I’m done, man.”
Alex tells us about how Lisi decided it’s time to go. It pisses him off because he could use her later in the game as a solid vote, but he tries not to judge people in life, so he’s not going to judge her now. And really, he should be thinking about her as another type of solid vote – on the jury.
Lisi tells us you sometimes need to know when it’s time to go. She got further than she thought she would, and doesn’t see the need to push herself further.
When Dreamz is told, he reacts as if he doesn’t really care. But he tells us it’s a dream come true to vote Lisi out. As Lisi is lying there in camp, the guys talk about how suffering makes you stronger and how 39 days is not really all that long. Dreamz tells us he’s not even taking his bags to Tribal Council.
At which point, we all know something is up. Lisi pulls Alex and Edgardo aside and asks what would happen if she kept on going. She was thinking and now has changed her mind. Alex talks to us about how often she changes her mind, saying he has thrown his hands up in despair.
Lisi tells us Alex and Edgardo know her and they are probably the three tightest in the game. She acts like all of them have had their moments of being at the brink. Um. No. But she tells them she believes Dreamz will “hop over” to Cassandra. Brilliant deduction. She now insists she can hang in there and they should boot Dreamz. Alex notes that it’s ten minutes before Tribal Council! Edgardo is not at all sure about what to do, but Lisi tells us they only need their three votes, so Dreamz is gone. We’ll see.
Ravu arrives at Tribal Council and juror Rocky is brought in. He exchanges a smile with Mookie.
Probst begins the questioning, noting that since new Ravu was formed, they’ve lost four out of five challenges. What does Lisi think is missing? She says there seems to be a lot of individualism and the group cannot come together as a cohesive force.
Probst notes that she’s had an emotional ride, and she says she’s run the gamut – rich, poor, Exile Island. “I’ve played this game; there’s no question about that.” Oh, I think there is a question about that. She may have been tossed around in the game, but played it? No. Not really.
What is Dreamz basing his vote on? He says he thinks Lisi wants to go home because she’s not winning like she was at old Moto. She gives up easily and it’s not hard to see that. Lisi fires back that she’s seen him give up in the middle of a challenge. Dreamz replies, “You’ve never seen me give up.” It’s just not in him to give up.
She says she’s seen him give up and fail to pull through in a challenge when they needed to pull through. Dreamz wants specifics – when? She doesn’t answer and says she can’t even do this. What? Provide facts to back up your allegations?
So what is the status of Lisi’s will and desire? She says, “It’s, quite frankly, wavering from minute to minute.” Sometimes she feels like there’s hope and other times she thinks they’re doomed.
How can Edgardo trust somebody who is acting like Lisi? He trusts her and she’s told him everything. Winning a lot, then losing a lot, and spending time on Exile Island has affected the way she’s viewing things.
Probst wants to know from Dreamz: “Yes or no, has your will dipped?” Dreamz is glad he asked that and says his will is the opposite of Lisi’s – he will fight. Their spirits don’t go down, just hers does.
Lisi looks shocked at this comment, which I don’t understand given all that she’s said, but hey, she’s Lisi, so I doubt I’ll ever understand her. Probst asks if she wants to be there. Lisi asks if she can catch a break – there are times when she’s not up to it and she’s just being honest. Dreamz jumps in and says he doesn’t feel Lisi really answered the question. “Can you ask her again?” Probst says Dreamz just did and Lisi just stares at Dreams evilly and then says, “What?” like she has no idea what’s going on around her.
So Dreamz flat out asks her, “Do you want to be here?” She hesitates and Dreamz says it’s a yes-or-no question. Rocky is chuckling from the jury box. Dreamz asks Alex, Edgardo, and Mookie the same question, and all quickly answer with variants of “yes.” So he turns back to Lisi again, saying they answered quickly. Lisi whines that she’s at fault for being honest because she wants to think for a minute? Uh, yeah. If you have to think about it, that pretty much answers the question.
Dreamz continues to take matters into his own hands and says, “Jeff, I’m ready to vote.” Ha! But Probst wants to give Lisi another shot. He says there is a vote about to happen and wants to know what she would advise her tribe to do. She says she wants them to give her a chance. Oh come on, you’ve used up all your chances and then some. At this point, if Edgardo and Alex keep her around, my respect for them and their game will drop significantly.
With that, it’s time to vote. Dreamz surprises nobody by voting against Lisi, saying he’s been waiting to do this for a long time. Lisi returns the favor and says, “You’re a grown man, consider a name change.” Way to be mature, Lisi.
Probst tallies and reads the votes: Lisi, Dreamz, Lisi, Lisi. Thank goodness! Lisi passes on her hat to Edgardo as she gets up and has her torch snuffed. Then she walks out without another word.
Before sending them home, Probst tells the Ravuans that if there is one truth in the game, it is that you have to want to win in order to make it to the end. Obviously, they didn’t feel Lisi had that desire. The good news is that the remaining four all say they do.
In her final words, Lisi says people can sit there and say whatever, but she knows who she is. It’s not a matter of will – when the ship is sinking, you get off the ship. What’s that phrase about the type of animal that leaves a sinking ship? Ah yes, rats. She also says Ravu will never get it together because they are “losers.” She ends by saying they need to try to hold on to themselves because together they are nothing.
Next week: A mysterious treemail sends them to Exile Island. And a shocking twist changes everything. My guess: Merge.
Wow. It’s rare that I’m virtually speechless after a Tribal Council vote, but I just do not at all understand what was going through Lisi’s head. Maybe I’ll find out more when I interview her. But honestly, I’m not sure I will – her version of logic just didn’t seem to match with reality. This episode truly was a look into the world according to Lisi.
