Episode 8: The Girl Who Has Surgery (4/19) The darker side of modeling is addressed this week in a difficult challenge and in lessons from Janice Dickinson and ANTM3 winner Eva. Later, the girls have two photo shoots and Joanie survives both of them despite undergoing 18 hours of dental work to get her teeth fixed. In the end, Joanie excels while Jade and Brooke are called forward as the final two. Jade's personality continues to grate on Tyra and the judges, but Brooke is the model eliminated because she isn't living up to her potential in her photos.
Following Leslie's elimination, the girls reassess how they've been doing so far in the competition. Joanie is thrilled to finally have come out on top with her krumping photo, while Brooke continues to feel the pressure of having to improve. Meanwhile, Nnenna's problems with her boyfriend continue. They have yet to recover from the incident where Nnenna kissed a male model during a shoot.
Later, the girls head to the Strausberg Advertising Agency, where they meet with an agent, Deprise Brescia, who "has launched many a top model's career." Suffice it to say, the girls don't get any positive reinforcement from Deprise since she is actually an actress who's testing the girls on how well they can take criticism. The hardest part of the challenge is being able to handle the negative comments and still take a great Polaroid at the end of the meeting. The girls hear everything from "your nose is too big" to "you look like a transvestite." The comments are not kind, and neither is Deprise's delivery, and Joanie has a tough time shaking it off. Though everyone thinks Jade's going to smackdown Deprise, she rolls with the comments, acknowledging her faults but owning them.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX?
At the end of the session, the truth is revealed and the girls are stunned to discover that Deprise is an actress. "I didn't even see that coming," Danielle says. Of all the girls, again, Jade did the best. She was unaffected by almost anything that was said and took a great Polaroid. She gets to pick a friend to receive a prize, so she chooses her roommate Nnenna. When they arrive home there are two huge boxes waiting for them. It's a little creepy when one of them starts to move, until Jade realizes there's someone inside. She breaks down in tears as her mom emerges, while Nnenna is indifferent when she finds her boyfriend waiting for her. She hugs him, but wishes one of her sisters had been there instead.
Jade spends a lot of time reconnecting with her special guest. Since her mom does energy work, they have a session, which energizes Jade. On the other hand, Nnenna has to retell the male model story yet again to John, this time acting it out. John tries to get reassurance that it won't happen again, but Nnenna doesn't respond.
Tyra Mail arrives, reading, "Some say models are brainless, living dolls. Are you?" The girls soon arrive at the next photo shoot for Pantene. They'll be dressed up as different types of dolls and photographed by Pascal Demeester. Joanie will be a ventriloquist's doll, Sara a teen doll, Furonda a rag doll, Jade a mannequin, Brooke a glamour doll, Nnenna a baby doll and Danielle a marionette.
THE LIVING DOLLS
Joanie's up first and the girls are jealous because she's the only one who gets to shoot with a male model (as her puppet master). Jay tries to get her to smile, but it's tough because she's always careful to hide her crooked teeth. Sara and Brooke both have to pose within the confines of a life-sized box. Although Sara rolls with it, Brooke is uncomfortable even with Jay's advice. On the other hand, Jay is pleased with Danielle's performance: "She's feeling this. She's giving me a puppet but a model." Jade looks great as a mannequin, and she's thrilled at Jay's positive feedback. Furonda does an excellent job--she loosens up and improvises, giving a different rag doll pose in every frame. Nnenna really holds back as a doll, and while she says it's because she didn't have a baby doll growing up, Jay doesn't buy that explanation.
Once the shoot is over, Jay has a special announcement: the girls will be getting their teeth whitened at a local dentist. However, Joanie and Danielle will be having special treatments--Danielle's gap will be addressed, while Joanie's snaggletooth will be taken care of. Joanie is so overwhelmed she tears up in happiness. As a child, her family couldn't afford braces for her, so she is grateful for the chance to have the work done.
As most of the girls go through the one hour tooth whitening procedure, Joanie gets started with her process. She'll be having a few teeth pulled, others filed down and temporary porcelain veneers placed over them. Danielle, who puts the kibosh on having the gap closed in her own front teeth, sits with her holding her hand. Joanie heads home at 5:30 in the morning. It's been a miserable twelve hours in the chair for her, made worse by the fact that she has to do a photo shoot the next day, bright and early.
THE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE
In the morning, Jade's mom and Nnenna's boyfriend depart. Nnenna seems glad she was granted the visit if only because it might help John chill out--his presence hasn't distracted her from the competition in the least. Seeing Jade interact with her mother has revealed a different, softer side to the rest of the girls. Sara thinks if Jade showed that to the judges in place of her arrogance, they'd appreciate it.
Later, the gang arrives at Club Mood for a photo shoot with designer Marc Ecko, Janice Dickinson and Eva, winner of ANTM3. Everyone is excited to meet Eva, who explains that the most important thing they can do in competition is exude confidence. Brooke takes that message to heart. Janice also pops in for a visit to talk about the ugly side of modeling. She explains that alcohol was her vice and it ruined her chances of working with Valentino. During her first show with him, she drank a couple of glasses of champagne and took a header off the runway into the laps of Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. Nnenna asks her how hard it is keeping a family together as a working model. Janice reveals it's terrible--she constantly feels guilt when she's away from her two children.
With that, the girls take off for yet another photo shoot where they are expected to exude sadness and tears while still remaining pretty in the shot. They are surprised when they learn that Tyra will be art directing them. Jade is first, and once the makeup artist adds some menthol "tear stick" to make the tears flow, she gets started. Danielle has a bad reaction to the menthol's burn, but she "gets into the zone" once the camera is turned on her. Furonda overacts somewhat till Tyra gives her some direction, while Brooke looks a little too sexy to be sad. Nnenna starts out well and the fake tears spur on some real ones as she breaks down crying. Sara is happy to have a lesson from Tyra on modeling, while Joanie's exhaustion and real pain work on her behalf.
THE GAP (OR, DANIELLE'S QUANDARY)
Back at the dentist that night, Joanie is stressed about her teeth, but when the procedure is complete she's amazed at the results. "I still feel a little uncomfortable smiling, because I'm not used to this kind of smile yet," Joanie explains. "Now I don't see anything holding me back."
When Tyra Mail arrives announcing the next elimination, Brooke thinks she's next to go. Furonda's pretty sure she's still in the running, and Nnenna believes her "performance has been average" lately. She hopes she hasn't lost an opportunity because of the distraction of her boyfriend.
The time arrives and the girls file in to meet the judges, including guest judge Pascal Demeester. Evaluations begin with Furonda, whose tearful photo is gorgeous. Twiggy is impressed: "When the competition started, I wasn't sure you were photogenic, and as the weeks have gone on you've just grown." Her doll shot is amazing as well; Nigel thinks it's her best yet. Brooke's tearful photo isn't great; Tyra's experience working with her was tough because she was so tense. Once her doll shot is revealed, Twiggy reveals her frustration with Brooke because she knows she has something special, but it just isn't working out. Joanie's anguished photo is good enough for an art book or a fashion magazine in Twiggy's eyes, while her ventriloquist's dummy shot is equally great. The judges also applaud her ability to survive 18 hours of dental work in two short days. However, they aren't as pleased with the fact that Danielle refused to get the gap in her teeth closed. Tyra asks, "Do you really think you can have a CoverGirl contract with that gap in your mouth?" Danielle brushes it off since it's very much a part of who she is. While her tearful shot doesn't evoke much emotion, her marionette shot is right on target. Her face is blank but intense. Jade's teary shot gets praise, and she begins to cry in front of the judges as she explains that's really who she is. However, as the girls behind her roll their eyes at her display, Nigel catches on. Tyra also doesn't appreciate what she sees as "bad acting." That said, her mannequin photo is striking; she truly emulates a mannequin. Sara's tearful shot seems "slightly nuts" to Nigel, while her teen doll doesn't evoke much of any response from the judges. When Nigel wonders if Sara is really passionate about modeling, she replies in the affirmative; she's truly discovering a new side of herself. Nnenna's tearful shot doesn't quite work for Nigel, but Tyra connects with its emotion. However, her baby doll photo is not so good. Nigel addresses the fact that Nnenna's been on the phone with her boyfriend every night, and Twiggy asks, "Do you want this more than you want to be with your boyfriend?" Nnenna answers without hesitation, "Absolutely."
NO MORE TEARS
Deliberations begin with Jade, whose fake tears earn boos from Miss J. Though Twiggy likes her photos, Jade's harshness does not appeal. Tyra is very pleased with Furonda's progress so far; she's really made leaps and bounds. As for Brooke, Twiggy agonizes over her lack of progress because she really does see something special in her. Nigel admires every photo Danielle has taken thus far, but Tyra is adamant that she get the gap in her teeth closed. Nnenna's photos are contrasting; the black and white expresses emotion, while the baby doll image is blank and boring. Sara's presence in front of the judges makes an impact for the first time; her intelligence came through, but Twiggy questions whether she's really a model. Twiggy thinks Joanie's two photos are "sensational," so she's definitely in this time around.
The decision is made and the girls return to hear the verdict. Joanie is called first, followed by Furonda, Nnenna, Sara and Danielle. Jade and Brooke step forward, and Tyra begins with Jade. Though she's taken great pictures, her "fake" persona irritates Tyra and she knows that the public won't buy it either. On the other hand, the judges see Brooke as the most beautiful girl each week, but she hasn't capitalized on the many chances she's had to prove herself. With that, Tyra eliminates Brooke. As Jade approaches to take her pictures, Tyra explains she needs to be in better touch with her emotions, so what she tries to express is understood (and believed) by others.
Remarkably, no tears fall as Brooke hugs her competitors and packs to leave. "It's kind of sad that I'm leaving everybody. I could have done better than I did in my pictures because I do feel that I have a lot of potential." Later, she explains, "I went into elimination thinking that no matter what if I do go home, I'm not going to cry. Crying and being emotional isn't going to change anything; I'm still eliminated. I'm still going home."
