Episode 8 - Magical Mystery Tour The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 8 - Magical Mystery Tour
by Jenn Brasler -- 04/09/2007
It’s a magical, surprising episode. Mirna is a motivational speaker! Uchenna & Joyce vanish into thin air! Oswald & Danny solve a problem with lemonade! But will it be that easy for them to stay in the race?
Previously on Where Else Will You See Beauty Queens Eating Sausage?: Six teams raced from Zanzibar to Warsaw. Eric & Danielle fought, then got stuck in airport hell with the Guidos. An Intersection paired Uchenna & Joyce with Cha3, landing them both at the Pit Stop in first place. Charm had trouble eating sausage, then wearing armor and leading a horse. However, it was Guido who fell victim to their 30-minute penalty and wound up being eliminated. Five teams remain:
Uchenna & Joyce - Married/I’m not sure they can keep the lead
Oswald & Danny (Cha3) - Friends/I wonder who they’ll try to pick up this time
Kandice & Dustin - Friends/Still one of my favorite teams
Charla & Mirna (Charm) - Cousins/All they want is compassion! Why won’t you help them??
Eric & Danielle - Dating/Still meh
We’re in Krakow, Poland, which is all artsy and cultural and pretty. Uchenna & Joyce and Cha3 are all leaving at 9:48 p.m. They’re on their way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Joyce says it’s coming down to the wire, since there are only five teams left. Now the race is more dog-eat-dog and everyone is more desperate to stay in. They want to go to a hotel and book a flight. Oswald interviews that he and Danny have been through 13 years of ups and downs. It’s all about how you solve problems.
Uchenna & Joyce sit down with someone to get tickets while Cha3 go up to another room. Both teams learn that the earliest flight out leaves at 7 a.m. and lands in Kuala Lumpur at 6:40 a.m. local time. However, there’s only one hour between the first flight and the connecting flight in Frankfurt. Oswald is worried they won’t have enough time to make the connection. Joyce thinks it’s risky and they shouldn’t chance it. Oswald hears about another flight that leaves at 8 and lands at 7:25 a.m. He doesn’t think it’s a big deal to leave an hour later. Uchenna thinks he and Joyce should take the risk - it’s a race for a million dollars, after all.
Kandice & Dustin leave around 3 a.m. It sucks that they lost so much time waiting for another team to get to the Intersection. Dustin says sometimes it feels like they’re holding on for dear life, but sometimes it’s like they’re charging ahead. They want to be consistent and keep being positive.
Charm leave about 25 minutes later. Mirna says that when everyone’s together, people copy off of each other, but that’s not how Charm play - they depend on their own skills. This from the woman who last week (and all during their original season) wondered why no one would help them). Charm go off to use the Internet.
Danielle & Eric leave. Eric says that when you’re with someone all the time, that’s the person you pick on and argue with. They just need to work on that and get past it. Their relationship has potential for growth. Eric & Danielle run into Charm, who are using the two available computers and won’t share. It’s kind of juvenile, but Charm are under no obligation to share, and not letting Danielle & Eric use a computer is to their advantage, so I can’t really complain about it. Anyway, on the way to the airport, Eric mocks Charm, who have yet to find a good flight.
Cha3 head to airport with reservations for the 7:25 flight. Charm get a flight that leaves at 4:45 a.m. and are glad they took the time to research and book tickets online. Eric & Danielle run into Kandice & Dustin at the airport and Eric shares the bad news that Charm aren’t nice. Boo hoo.
Charm arrive at the airport as Dustin & Kandice research tickets and learn about the 7:25 a.m. Charm are happy to learn that they’ll land before Kandice & Dustin. Mirna tries to interrupt them at their ticket counter to ask a question, but Eric, who’s also there, tells her she should wait since he and Danielle had to wait for the for computers. Dustin & Kandice whisper that Charm are annoying. Mirna doesn’t complain about Eric, accepting that he made a valid point.
Uchenna & Joyce arrive at the airport, followed by Cha3. Dustin & Kandice hope they’re on the same flight as the other teams. They listen in to find out. Eric notes that Joyce & Uchenna are getting in earlier but have a short connection time. Eric says he doesn’t want to risk that after the airport hell he’s experienced. He points out that if Joyce & Uchenna’s first flight is delayed even 15 minutes, they can’t board the next one. He says they’re braver than him. Kandice & Dustin also note that it’s tight. Uchenna says they’re optimistic.
Charm leave for Kuala Lumpur, as do Uchenna & Joyce. Not long after, a third flight leaves carrying the other three teams. Joyce says that once they land, they have to rush to get to their connection by 11. Their plane lands ten minutes late, and they lose their chance. Uchenna is allowed to talk to an airline rep on the phone, and he says that their life depends on this. No, a million dollars depends on this, and that’s not your life. They’re out of luck and move on to other ticket counters but don’t hear any good news. Uchenna says they just have to stay positive and figure out how to do this. Joyce adds that they should hope others have issues.
Charm land in Kuala Lumpur and have to take a train and bus to the Batu Caves. However, they have to figure out the best train and bus to take. On the plane, Charm talked to some locals and now know the best routes. They hope to keep their lead. On the train, Mirna admires the view. They run for a bus that actually stops for them.
Cha3, Eric & Danielle, and Kandice & Dustin land. Kandice & Dustin have found a local who knows where to take them. Cha3 have done research and also know how to get to the caves. It’s unclear what Danielle & Eric know. Dustin & Kandice get a little lead on the others and grab a train before them. They’re not sure where Charm are or if they made their connecting flight. Cha3 and Eric & Danielle wonder where Dustin & Kandice are.
Charm arrive at the caves and find the clue box at the top of a steep staircase. The clue tells them to take a cab to a mosque and search the streets for a clue box. Caution: Yield ahead. Oh, bleh. Mirna gets a cab by shouting, “Beep beep!” Okay, then.
Dustin & Kandice get off their train and head for the bus station, which they’re told is far away. Oswald talks to a local and gets directions. Cha3 get off their train, but Eric & Danielle stay on, thinking they’ll get to the caves faster on the train than in a cab.
Mirna says she and Charla want to win through their own efforts, not holding people back, so they won’t be Yielding anyone. They find the clue box and forgo the Yield. The clue box contains a Detour, and the choices are Artistic Expression and Cookie Confection. That’s reaching, clue writers. In Art, the teams batik and dye a 45-square-foot cloth. In Cookie, the teams find a stall and bite through 600 boxes of cookies for one with a licorice center. Ewww. Mirna wants to do Cookie, which I think is crazy. Why would you do the needle-in-a-haystack task if you didn’t have to?
Cha3 get to a bus station, noting that everyone’s taking a different route. Dustin & Kandice are lost. Eric & Danielle talk to locals and hope they’re going the right way. Charm find the cookie stall and realize how many boxes 600 are. Cha3 take a bus to the caves. Dustin & Kandice also grab a bus. They’re not feeling good about now knowing the standings. Danielle & Eric get a bus and Eric thinks they made the right decision. Charm eat cookies and speak English with their Armenian accents.
Cha3 make it to the caves and aren’t happy to have to climb all those steps. Danielle & Eric get on their bus as Dustin & Kandice arrive at the caves. There’s a monkey there and they exclaim over it. They consider Yielding Danielle & Eric, but not that Cha3 have also done well. However, they ultimately decide that Eric & Danielle are more of a threat. Kandice laughs that they’ll hate them forever.
Danielle & Eric get their clue at the caves. Cha3 start searching for the Yield and Detour. As Kandice & Dustin arrive at the mosque, they spot the clue box on a bridge. They arrive at the Yield and use it on Eric & Danielle, noting that it’s pure strategy and nothing personal. Eric hopes he and Danielle aren’t in last place. Kandice & Dustin choose Art and grab a group of locals to take them there. They say they would have loved to do Cookie, but 600 boxes are way too many.
Charm ask for some cheers from a gathered crowd. Some of the people know who they are and cheer them on by name. Cha3 look for the clue box at the mosque. Oswald tells Danny to relax. Charm are still looking for the licorice cookie. “After 500, it gets a little old,” Mirna says. No kidding. They worry that other teams will catch up.
Dustin & Kandice get to Art and notice that no one else is there. They count how many flowers they need to batik before starting. Cha3 are still looking and finally find the clue box on the bridge. They note that Eric & Danielle will be mad about the Yield. Danny thinks Cookie is faster, but Oswald thinks he’s crazy. He winds up giving in, though. Danny tells him to trust him, but Oswald sounds skeptical.
Eric & Danielle find Yield and are not thrilled. “Those dirty, dirty hookers,” Eric says. Danielle asks why Kandice & Dustin would Yield them. Maybe because it’s part of the game and a strategic move to get ahead? Or maybe it’s because, as Eric says, they’re “dirty pirate hookers.” Yeah, that must be it.
Danielle says they just made enemies for no reason. Eric rips Kandice & Dustin’s picture in half and taunts them. Danielle calls them something I won’t repeat. She’s shocked that they’ve been Yielded. Now she questions Kandice & Dustin’s characters. She says they’re fake. Oh, please. What, did she want them to tell her before they Yielded her? It’s a freaking race! I know I’ve ranted about people’s reactions to the Yield before, so I won’t do it again, but come on. Everyone knows the rules. Danielle notes that the Yield was why she was eliminated in her season.
At Art, Dustin & Kandice note they could be out if they hadn’t used the Yield. Charm decide to switch Detours. Cha3 find Cookie and realize someone’s been there. They start chewing. Danny thinks just have to bite into one cookie in each box, and that wherever the licorice cookie is, the whole box contains licorice cookies. Oswald thinks he’s wrong and they end up switching tasks. Danny’s upset.
Charm arrive at Art. Dustin & Kandice are already done with their batik, though, and get to start painting. Danny doesn’t think Cookie will be that difficult. Oswald says they’ll go back, then. Danny goes on about how he always listens to Oswald. Oswald condescendingly says they’ll go back to Cookie.
Eric & Danielle wait at the Yield. Kandice & Dustin are happy to see Charm at Art, probably partly because that means they’re not the last team and partly because they’re not Danielle & Eric. The cloth is too high up for Charla, but Mirna says they’ll find a way to make do. If she has to do this task, fine. They’re a team and they work together. Does that make sense to anyone? Just wondering. Kandice & Dustin finish and get their next clue. It sends them to a neighborhood called Taman Sri Hartamas to find a newspaper truck.
Charla thinks she and Mirna we wasted too much time at Cookie. Ya think? Cha3 do Cookie again. Eric & Danielle hope to catch up. Cha3 keep going at Cookie. Oswald says he’ll stay for Danny. Danny finally says they’ll switch to Art. Well, let’s waste time talking about it, shall we?
Eric & Danielle’s waiting time is up and they choose Cookie. They spot Cha3 and Oswald interviews that Danielle & Eric are good competitors but cunning. Cha3 meet up with Charm at Art. Danny is hot and says no one told him he’d be at sweatshop in Malaysia. Eric & Danielle start Cookie.
Dustin & Kandice get to Taman Sri Hartamas, where they find a Roadblock. One team member has to ride a bike with a sidecar and try to buy a stack of used newspapers eight hands high from people in the neighborhood. Kandice takes the task and learns a phrase to yell that means “old newspapers.”
Cha3 have one too many batik flowers and have to start over. Charm are already painting. Kandice honks her horn and calls out for newspapers. It doesn’t take her long to get some, and a guy tells her with the way she looks, she shouldn’t have any trouble. Hee.
Cha3 batik. Eric & Danielle chew. Uchenna & Joyce… sleep, I guess. I don’t know. Charm finish up Art as Cha3 finish batiking, this time doing it correctly. Eric & Danielle still look for the right cookie. Cha3 seem to be getting along better. They’re done but can’t get a cab. Danielle gets a licorice cookie. Cha3 finally get a cab and agree that they’ve calmed down. Danny still wants space, though.
Dustin cheers on Kandice, letting her know when Charm arrive. Mirna says that Kandice & Dustin are phony. Interesting, since I’ve always thought Dustin & Kandice were very real. Mirna takes the Roadblock. Kandice has enough papers, so she’s done already. The next Pit Stop is six miles away, a lovely mansion called Carcosa Seri Negara.
Mirna heads off on her bike, not looking thrilled. She keeps running into the curb, saying, “Just kidding,” which is totally what I say, so now I’m going to have to stop. Elsewhere, Eric hopes he and Danielle have made up time. Cha3 don’t know where Eric & Danielle are. Well, they’re at the Roadblock, which Danielle takes. Okay, why? Cha3 arrive and Oswald wants Danny to take the task. Danny says he doesn’t mind. Oswald interviews that horses are fine, but he doesn’t like bikes. Eric complains to Oswald and Charla that Dustin & Kandice Yielded them, calling them dirty hookers again. Lovely guy, isn’t he?
In a cab, Kandice says she probably won’t be delivering papers again any time soon. Dustin reveals that her first job was a paper route. They arrive at the Pit Stop and one says that she smells Phil. I bet he smells like cinnamon. Anyway, they’re first, Phil tells them with a cute grin. They’ve each won a scooter. Phil notes that they’ve beaten some tough teams. Dustin says they don’t want to be overconfident.
Mirna hits pay dirt, finding a house that contains a bunch of old newspapers. Danielle comes across as very friendly when she finds a house with papers for her. Danny is also in luck. Beethoven’s Fifth plays, for some reason, as the family Mirna has found helps her load up her sidecar. Danielle gets some help from a kid as well and thinks she’s done. Danny gets a bunch from his house. Danielle comes back to check her stack. Eric is not very supportive. Danielle needs four more hands’ worth of papers.
Mirna gets help taking her bike back, and Charla is proud of her work. Mirna tells us that the kids that helped her are the future Charlas and Mirnas of the world. If that doesn’t scare you, I don’t know what will. Mirna then has a very nice moment where she tells one of the kids to stay in school, not do drugs, and be a professional. Charm are done and on their way. Mirna tells a girl to win more medals in school.
Danny returns and Oswald asks if he promised his firstborn to someone to get all his papers. Danny is a little frustrated with Oswald’s comments and the fact that he has to do the task. Also, he’s not done, so there’s that. Oswald promises to make it up to him. He tells Eric he’ll just let him blow off steam, then asks for a rope so he can hang himself as Danny sings, “Hating you.”
Danny keeps collecting, needing five more hands’ worth. Danielle drives over a curb, busting a wheel. Danny asks for a glass of water at a house. Danielle keeps collecting without riding her bike. Danny’s supply runs out, so he stops another guy on a bike and tries to buy from him.
Charm reach the Pit Stop and are second. Considering all the time they spent at Cookie, that’s a pretty good recovery.
Danny goes to a gas station and asks for newspapers. He should also totally buy a little Hello Kitty balloon. Danielle gets a bunch of papers and thinks she has enough. Danny hits the mother load at the gas station. Danielle hugs a helper and asks him to help her get back on her busted bike. She complains that she has to do every Roadblock designed for a guy. Yeah, Kandice and Mirna did it, so shut it, Danielle, and stop setting back the women’s movement. She’s done and leaves with Eric. He can’t wait to give Dustin & Kandice the finger. So mature.
Danny returns and is done. In the cab, Oswald asks if he spent all their money. Danny says he has a little left. Oswald is sorry he had to do the task. “We’re fine,” Danny says, sounding like he means it. He says he had lemonade. Oswald asks if he had lunch, too. “While I was worried and waiting for you, you had a lemonade? We’re so even right now.” He says he’s proud no matter what happens.
Danielle isn’t sure what’s going on. I have a feeling she says that a lot. Oh, she means she doesn’t know where she and Eric are in the pack. Well, Uchenna & Joyce are MIA, so obviously they’re fine. Danielle & Eric get to the Pit Stop and check in third. Phil notes they got Yielded. They’re still not happy. Danielle says again that there was no reason for it. Later, Cha3 run up in good spirits and check in fourth.
Five years later, Uchenna & Joyce arrive in Kuala Lumpur. Joyce says that when it’s night and you’re in this position, it feels like you might have to give in, but they’re not ready to. Uchenna says they have to look to each other and keep their spirits up until they either catch up or… He doesn’t want to mention the alternative. The two get to the caves and are sent straight to the Pit Stop, so they know it’s over for them. Indeed, they’re eliminated. It sucks that they had to go out that way. They didn’t have a chance.
Joyce & Uchenna say they’re okay and you can’t win ‘em all. Uchenna adds that they know how hard it is to win the race. Joyce notes that they’ve never been eliminated before, so this is a strange feeling - it’s the end of the road. Uchenna says they were working every minute. Joyce has seen a new spark in Uchenna and appreciates it. He’s her life partner and she can’t imagine being without him. Uchenna says they’ve chosen to stay together and work things out, as well as find a place where they can be together happily for the rest of their lives. Joyce says she loves him.
Next week: Dustin & Kandice go after Charm. Mirna doesn’t want Dustin to touch her. She calls Kandice & Dustin “Yield Queens.” Cha3 flip a van, possibly on purpose.
