Episode 8 Insider Clips – Dirty Pirate Hookers The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 8 Insider Clips – Dirty Pirate Hookers
by Heathyr Fields Ford -- 04/12/2007
The stress is getting to our racers. While Eric & Danielle have formed a temporary truce, Danny & Oswald are bickering. Everyone has something to say about the Dustin and Kandice’s decision to use the Yield. Read on for the insider scoop on that and more.
Another week gone but Charla & Mirna linger on. Lovely. I’m definitely less than thrilled with that outcome. Ah well, it’s like the Weavers Part Deux, and I’ll just have to grin, bear it, and yell at my television set.
Elimination Station
At elimination station, we see a brief clip of Joe & Bill talking with Ian, and then we have the table, and there is discussion about how some people shouldn’t be allowed to win, like the Beauty Queens. It’s Kevin pointing out to Drew how flawed his logic is. Drew is all like ‘they don’t deserve to win, because they won something already,’ and Amber jumps in to point out she won Survivor, so by that logic, Drew wouldn’t want her to win either. He disagrees, because he likes Amber. Nice. Pardon me while I eyeroll a bit.
The phone rings, and it is Uchenna & Joyce. The others were not expecting to hear their voices. Uchenna explains their big error, then asks if Rob can hear them. Rob is passed out, they quip, but Amber takes the phone and says that Rob had picked them to win. Uchenna says “win by a plane, lose by a plane” which is actually way too true for them. Uchenna says they’re a good crowd. Ian is glad Eric & Danielle are still in it. Ick. Amber says it just proves that anyone can win this race.
Pit Stop Cam
None for this week. Bummer.
Mat Chats
Dustin & Kandice: Phil asks what they think of his shirt. They like it, and they say it looks good with the building. Phil brings up the all female team thing again, and he states it’s looking good. They agree, but say that each leg has its own trauma and challenges. Phil needs to hear it and see it in their eyes. They say they really feel in their bones that they’ll be in the final three. He reminds them about last time. Dustin says it would be devastating to get out on this next leg since it was the last one they got out on. Phil tells them not to let it happen. Kandice says they’re going to try. Dustin says they are a very well-rounded team, and Kandice cites their determination. Phil asks if they want it more than the other teams. She feels like they are in the top couple teams. Phil pulls out some wipe thing and sticks it to his forehead and gives one to each girl as well, but the beautiful woman on the mat isn’t sweating at all. Dustin asks what a retro scooter is again. Phil explains, and they’re excited it’s not a Vespa. Phil says guys dig girls on retro scooters, and that they did it just for the girls to give them that. Dustin makes some joke about world peace, obviously a beauty queen mock, and I love it. Too cute.
Charla & Mirna: Phil asks them what other teams they would like to see in the final three with them, using their smarts. Mirna says Eric & Dani and Charla says Oswald & Danny, and Mirna thinks a toss up between them and Uchenna & Joyce. Phil asks who they want to see go home. Charla figures it’s a non-elimination leg. Mirna says they calculated. Then she whines about how she hasn’t been lucky enough to be non-eliminated and come in last. And when people see them, they think it’s all luck that they make it each leg. Oh yes, poor misunderstood Mirna.
Mirna says that her flight was delayed 3 hours in last race and that’s the only reason they came in sixth. Charla explains that this challenge she couldn’t do those bikes, would have had to use a kids bike or something. Charla says the world doesn’t change for her needs, she deals with it every day, and she could push it if she needed to, but Mirna could push it, so let her. See, this sort of talk is when Charla comes across like a relatively normal human being, versus the obviously psychotic Mirna who never really comes off that way.
Did I mention I would have been twenty when I graduated from college if I hadn’t gotten married and taken a few years off? Putting me at 22 if I’d gone the law route. Suck that, Mirna.
Phil says that they thought they’d have come in first by hours this leg, but got stuck with the cookies. Phil asks why people underestimate them. Mirna says we overestimate them. They just need to get to know us. If you judge a book by its cover, you won’t get to know us.
Honestly, yes, they do work airports well, and I hate that because I want these obnoxious people gone. They are SO preachy and pretentious. Actually, Charla seems like she’d be okay away from Mirna most the time. Mirna is preaching some about how you can do anything and race is all about that, etc, and I really just hear the “adults talking” noise from Peanuts specials.
Eric & Danielle: Danielle says they talked about the Yield, and they figured the girls wouldn’t have used it. Phil asks if that makes it all out war. Eric agrees, and he’s happy to be back in at third. Phil says the girls are pretty strong. Eric says unless they hire taxis and follow people, the blondes get lost. He mentions the dumb mistakes they’ve made too, and he hopes it catches up with them. Phil asks about Charla & Mirna and the airplane. Eric whines about the internet incident, which was just competition. Danielle talks about how you couldn’t be too friendly this close to the end and that’s a new feeling for her. Phil says that at the beginning, he got the impression that she didn’t believe she could run all these legs. She agrees. Eric also thinks they wouldn’t have done as well since he’s used to Jeremy. Must. Not. Comment. He says they’ve been so down with how behind they’ve been, and they definitely hope they’ll be in final three. They want Uchenna & Joyce out because they won. Phil asks if they still feel that way considering that Uchenna and Joyce are tough competitors. They don’t care, as long as they’re there.
Oswald & Danny: Danny & Oswald fess up to their first argument on the race. Danny says that Oswald is a Taurus and is one stubborn son-of-a-bitch. Oswald laughs that Danny will laugh about this in ten years. Danny’s resting on Oswald, and he says he let it go, and he does admit to being stubborn, but not as stubborn as Oswald. Nelson was a Taurus, and Oswald is a Taurus, actually, both born on the same day, and Danny says they share the same stubbornness, and he loves it, so BRING IT! Danny will be in the final three, and he’ll bring Oswald along. Oswald tells him to bring his other personality. They think Charla & Mirna are very deserving of final three, and they race very well with their style. Danny would prefer the blondes before Eric & Danielle. They say at least the blondes have a game to bring. They were final four last time, and they would like to better it. Oswald says traditionally, the fourth place team is a team everyone is rooting for, but they wind up out, so they’re going to break that curse.
Uchenna & Joyce: Phil says they saw this as a good part of their relationship. Uchenna says they needed to share something that was just the two of them. It’s served its purpose, they agree. Uchenna says winning again would have been awesome so they could splurge, because the first time was paying bills, and they got that done. He’s still obviously thrilled, and he considers them privileged to run the race twice. Joyce, individually, says she wanted to be strong on her own during the race too and not just rely on Uchenna. The race makes her come out of her shell. Uchenna sees it as a way for personal growth. He admits to being a control freak. Uchenna talks about how they start on a path of being grateful as the overriding pattern of their life so that healing and positivity can happen. They are heartbroken to leave the race at this point, but also happy to have gotten this far.
Phil asks how they go forward from the race if wanting it to improve. Uchenna states it’s not therapy, but a way to remind them how good life can be, and it is up to them to do the actual work to get to that stuff. Joyce says they can’t rely on the race all the time, so they’re going to find things around home that help with this. Uchenna talks about how much they learn on the race, how much you do in a short period of time, etc. Joyce hopes it’s inspiring to other people, watching the race, to get out of home towns and try new things. Phil asks if they’re a couple forever. Uchenna says they’re going to be together, no reason to go apart. Phil asks what’s special about the relationship. Uchenna says they’ve crossed oceans together, and seeing each other at weakest and strongest. This moment is the worst moment in five years, and it’s not so bad, because tomorrow is coming.
I’ll miss them. Yeah, he’s a bit preachy at times, but he’s motivational and sweet and genuine, and so is she. I wish them well.
Episode Clips
Oswald & Danny Talk It Through: They’re talking in their hotel room about tight connections, trying to decide whether it’s worth it. Danny suggests talking to the supervisor for her educated guess and see if it’s possible. Oswald thinks he’ll call Malaysia and find out. Danny says the supervisor will be able to check the gates and know if it’s feasible to do, so call them instead. Cut to Oswald on the phone and the supervisor telling them it’s too short of a time. They are comfortable with going to Paris. Danny makes the smart comment that there will be some sort of task or something that will catch them up. He then mentions Thailand is a land of buses, so Oswald tells him they’re going to Malaysia, and he very cutely is all like “whatever!”
Oswald & Danny on Racing Around the World: Tthey’re in a taxi, and Danny says that if you had looked up, you would have seen a vaulted cathedral that was absolutely stunning. Danny jokes about the monkeys being loose. Oswald says they’ve been loose on the race the whole time, but Danny says that’s the rats. Heh. Oswald says he finds this race, going from one culture to the next, fascinating, and he thinks people should experience something like this on their own. He says they were in Poland, Auschwitz, and now Kuala Lumpur, and such a juxtaposition.
Oswald & Danny Discuss the Race Leaders: Oswald thinks the girls chose Eric, and they have a personal rapport with the girls, but during the race, they race. Danny says that Dani & Eric just follow people around. Oswald says that Eric & Danielle followed every step they did at the airport, such as changing money, and the express, and they made decisions separately only when bought the connection bus to Batu Caves. Oswald says they don’t know where they are, but Danny saw them up on the bridge. They’ve lost track of Eric & Danielle now.
The Dehydration of Danny: Oswald jokes that Charla started her own cult of kids following her. Danny says not to even start that. Oswald & Danny praise their flight skills, but what killed them was the cookie thing. Oswald says they were getting nauseated from that. He then laughs about the lemonade. He tells Danny he said it would be too fun if they did a lemonade stand task. Danny says he was dehydrated going in to it, and he says he was very organized and knows the neighborhood very well. He wishes he could have jumped fences to steal newspapers.
Uchenna & Joyce Stranded in Frankfurt: They are at the airport, and Uchenna says name of the game is never give up and to stay positive. He mentions that a guy in Munich who was supposed to be helping them wasn’t. Joyce feels that even if he’d done all that, they should have got the paper tickets, and his machine broke. Uchenna says that it could have been done if the guy had called, per the woman he spoke with. Cut a little. Uchenna explains they are trying to get another ticket, and everyone is booked. He hopes to avoid a twelve hour delay, which is what they have right now. The risk for being an hour ahead, he admits, turns into being even more behind. Joyce says they can hope other teams have issues too. Uchenna agrees. He says if they quit, they’d just go to McDonald’s and wait for a call, but he knows better, because it’s not over until you’re told. They handle this well. He admits it would be easy to lose it right now, but it wouldn’t help the situation.
Night Falls on Uchenna & Joyce’s Race: They are on the bus, and Joyce says when you are in this position and night falls, it makes you feel like you should throw in the towel, but no one has told them to. Uchenna says everything is harder to do at night. And then my video fails, and I can’t get this one to go again.
Charla & Mirna Won’t Use the Yield: They are in the cab, and Charla wonders if they’re Yielded. Mirna calls people who would do that real jerks, because they’d be able to be outrun. Mirna then says that maybe though… and trails off. Self-righteous witch. Charla preaches about how she wouldn’t Yield one of the other teams, as they want everyone to play on their own efforts. Mirna says they want to win by not holding people back. The Yield is part of the game, and it can be strategic, so it’s okay to use it, ya know? Mirna says if she were tied for last, she might reassess. So, if it FIT you, you would do it, and be okay with it, and justify it, but since you feel secure, you are preachy? Get the heck off my screen. Go away. Mirna calls it bad karma. Whatever.
Mirna Doesn’t Worry About Losing Lead: Mirna wonders if others know how to book flights at all. She’s very deprecating about them. It’s one thing to be good at something, but it’s another to be good, then denigrate others who aren’t as good. They discuss what place they’re in, and they think towards front of pack. Mirna says logic would say third, since they left Pit Stop in third. She wonders what they did with their seven hour lead. Then she says that they had a two hour lead, and wasted it, but that’s not seven hours. Yeah, but the cookies were ALL YOU! The seven hours was in the night trying to get a flight. It was dependent on other things. Duh. Now, there is no excuse that others couldn’t have found that damned 5 am flight Mirna did, but I just love how it’s okay for her to foolishly squander their lead on something entirely within their control, but it’s not understandable for something not within other’s control all the way. Sheesh.
Danielle Wants Payback for the Yield: Eric says they don’t like the blonde girls. Danielle is more pissed, and he is taking it more like a game. He’s not sure why they got Yielded. He assumes it’s because the blondes knew they were behind. They can save their apologies, he says, because Danielle wants to punch them in the head. He has enough friends, so he says he doesn’t need them. Then he’s like “this doesn’t bother me” but he’s not going to talk to them, and he goes on and on about how Danielle will use her sailor mouth on them. Good lord. Yes, this bothers him more than he says. He also doesn’t know which one is Dustin and which one is Kandice. Nice.
Childish though it was, I did laugh my butt off at “dirty pirate hookers.” I’m so teaching my bird that.
Eric & Danielle Find a Five-Star Jail: They look at something while walking at night and wonder if it’s a police station and a Holiday Inn. Danielle doesn’t get it. Eric isn’t sure. Eric doesn’t feel this is a good idea, and he figures it’s a Holiday Inn sign pointing elsewhere, and this is a police station.
Dustin’s Little Pleasures in Life: Dustin & Kandice are in line. Danielle is behind them and Eric to the side. They are talking about sleep. The girls were all about shower and sleeping, they didn’t even turn the TV on. Dani says Eric needs the TV on. Dustin wants to staple something for whatever reason, and the guy lets her.
Eric & Danielle Survive A Tough Day: Danielle says she’s had a good day. Eric jokes that they’re going to give the blondies the feeling. Danielle’s all like “there wasn’t a reason for it” and she calls it stupid. This was the smartest use of the Yield I’ve seen actually, because they had NO CLUE that Uchenna & Joyce were still that far behind. Eric talks about how Oswald & Danny were mistaken about the cookie task. Danielle’s all “whoa.”
Oswald Hates Cookies:Oswald & Danny post-leg. Oswald is talking about how the cookies were a waste of time, and Danny is joking with him about how he says cookies, and it’s utterly adorable. Danny says that now that he’s had time to think, the cookies were so wrong, it was wrong with a capital “R”. Heh. Oswald says he wanted to cry or slap him about the cookies. He rants cutely about how frustrating it was to watch Danny take one bite and throw it off. Oswald says he should have just put his foot down, and let Danny pout. Danny says he would have processed it and been fine. Danny is teasing Oswald about wanting to go through the training of the batiking. Then they did it wrong, Oswald is laughing that they did not count, just did it, and so on. He calls Danny “Mr. I like to stamp” and says he stamps all over the place. Hah. Please win. You or Dustin & Kandice. Please win. Danny says to send America a memo that he made a race. Oswald mouths several. Oswald keeps talking, and Danny mocks “cookies” at Oswald again. Love.
Uchenna & Joyce’s Parting Words: Uchenna says the race has been a gas. Gratitude is the word, man. Joyce agrees. She says you need to be present to the moment and appreciate the moments crossing your path. She says they have a lot more to be grateful for. It takes the sting away, is what she’s getting at, I think. Uchenna says they’ll forget about the loss far sooner than the great memories of the previous legs. Uchenna reiterates that the race isn’t therapy, but they do gain from it, like knowing they need to be courageous and can live one week a year like this, because they fire it up. He says they did skydiving on his birthday, and that made for a special weekend. Joyce thinks that if they are “present” all the time in their lives, then they’ll appreciate every moment all the time, not just one week a year.
Eric & Danielle’s Tentative Truce: Danielle says that Eric bought her two candy bars, and they are not fighting about coffee and orange juice any more. She says there is a lot of stress and idle time, but mostly they’re getting along. She gets nauseous every time they get off a plane because the stress starts up again. She feels that getting to the tasks is too nerve-wracking, but she’s fine once they’re there. She also thinks it’s because they’re so close to the end that they argue. They both agree that they’re getting along fine. Sitting and waiting is when they argue, and probably stress-induced. He says you pick on the person you’re with. You should avoid that, dude. And he does add that in good relationships, you get past that, and in bad relationships, you can’t. It might be the smartest thing he’s ever said!
Dustin & Kandice are Misunderstood: The girls laugh that the weird thing is that everyone thinks the girls got Yielded at their last season, but no one has seen their season. Kandice says in real life we would never set someone back, and we think we’re last, so it’s what you do. Dustin thinks they would have done the same thing, and she feels Eric would have done it. Kandice isn’t sure. They both feel bad about it because they’re in first and it wasn’t needed, but at the time they didn’t know that.
And there you have it for another week! Please make Charla & Mirna go next week? Please? No final three for them! I beg of you!
