Episode 7, June 15 So You Think You Can Dance 2, June 15: Guilty Feet Have Got No Rhythm
by Sting7 -- 06/16/2006
Once again, we must endure an hour to get five minutes worth of information. Three dancing couples will be in the bottom three and in danger. One male and one female are going home! Is the answer so obviously Ashlee and Benji? What does Nelly Furtado have to do with any of this? The answers are here.
As we begin, we see all 20 dancers in impossibly white outfits, and before you can say, “one singular sensation,” they are all hoofing to the strains of Daft Punk’s “Technologic.” It’s a hot routine! Brian Friedman found a way to include versions of various dance elements throughout, giving all the dancers a chance to shine in their own specialties. Note how Dmitry is buried in the back during the hip hop portion.
Cat, with her hair up tonight – clearly it’s a special event – welcomes us and tells us what we already know. Then she introduces a recap of things we mostly already saw.
Somberly, Cat tells us that she is now looking for the three lowest ranking pairs. Dim the lights please, she says funereally.
Here’s a good time to mention that my bottom three couples were Jason and Aleksandra; Ben and Ashlee; and Dmitry and Joy. I also predicted Ben and Ashlee will be heading home to burn every Flashdance soundtrack they can get their hands on.
Starting with the hip hop couples:
Donyelle and Benji are…. Safe!
Joy and Dmitry are…. Safe!
Now, the ballroom couples.
Ryan and Heidi are…. Safe!
Stanislav and Erin… are in the bottom three! Really? I blame Erin.
Mary says she’s confused. She actually has them in her top three. She said Stas gave one of the best renditions of the paso doble she’s ever seen! Hmmm. Moving on.
Jason and Aleksandra… Safe!
Travis and Martha… Safe!
Ivan and Allison… not safe. Wow! I didn’t see this coming at all!
Musa and Natalie… Safe!
Dan says he’s not surprised about Ivan and Allison. While Allison owned the stage, Ivan really showed he’s vulnerable outside of his discipline. Now for the last two.
Ben and Ashlee … Safe!
Jaymz (they corrected that spelling) and Jessica … are not safe!
Cat challenges Nigel on his prediction that Ben and Ashlee would be toast. Nigel says it is subjective, but based on technique, Jaymz and Jessica are better. Still, Ben and Ashlee are a charming duo, and at this stage, personality counts plenty.
(I didn’t guess a single couple right! What in the name of Elliott Yamin is happening to me??)
The endangered six dancers will have a chance to show plenty of personality as they dance-ance for-or their-eir lives-ives, starting now:
Erin – does a free jazz-lyrical routine to an unplugged version of Daniel Bedingfield’s “Gotta Get Through This” (yes, the show listed the song wrong. Again). She smiles winningly throughout, but it’s the kind of smile that is just inches away from being a rictus.
Stanislav – does a solo bit of ballroom blitzing to Tito Puente’s “Shin-a-Tin-Tin” and his hips may qualify as a new energy source! There is NO WAY he’s going home. The judges love him too much.
Allison – gorgeous Allison does her lyrical thing to Natasha Bedingfield’s (the only two people in the world named “Bedingfield” and they are played within seconds of each other!) “Wild Horses.” Allison is quite wild and as beautiful herself, even savvy enough to toss in a nice bouncy flourish of an ending to the “shoo-be-doo” punctuation of the elimination dance period. I… Love her! Nigel does too, openly giggling at her moxie.
Ivan – gets to show his hip-hop chops to Black Rob’s “Ready,” and he does. I love watching Ivan dance. But Ivan doesn’t seem to know what he wants to do, and it shows a bit. Please don’t cut him.
Jessica – dancing to Elisa’s “Dancing,” Jessica shows technique in abundance, and is quite impressive! This is more from her than I expected.
Jaymz – dances to The Used’s “All That I Have” and he looks like he could be the next Blake McGrath… without all of the attitude. In fact, Jaymz tells Cat that he watched himself and thought he could have been better. Blake would never say that.
Now that the dancers have danced, Nigel, Mary and Dan go backstage to deliberate.
While that heavy business is going on, Nelly Furtado and Timbaland perform their soon to be number one song, “Promiscuous.” Who? Okay, I know we have some less than hip viewers of this show, so I will clue you in. Nelly Furtado is a former model who released a piece of pop perfection called “I’m Like A Bird” a few years ago. Quickly perceived as a quirky granola girl, she immediately smashed that rep by collaborating with Missy Elliott and Timbaland on some zesty remixes. It was match made in heaven.
Timbaland is one of the few producers who are as famous as the artists he works with. About five years ago, any hip hop worth listening to had Timbaland involved in it. When he’s not producing the likes of LL Cool J, Fabolous, Justin Timberlake, and others, he has his own group, Timbaland and Magoo.
Nelly sounds fantastic, and Timbaland looks a wee bit uncomfortable – understandable since his television appearances can be counted one hand. But a nice job overall, they did their thing. Dawg.
Time for the elimination. First the girls.
Allison is quickly excused, they love her too much to let her go. That leaves Erin and Jessica. Nigel notes that for either of them, America has not gotten to know them yet, but the judges know they are fine dancers. Just as quickly, Nigel asks Erin to step forward. She will not be asked to stay.
Cat asks for feelings. (Argh.) Erin smiles and says, “This is what they wanted.” Oh my! Make it interesting, Erin! But, no luck, she demurs, she says she knows she messed up and yeah, maybe America not knowing her may have played a role.
Now for the guys. This will be tough! I don’t want Ivan to go, but I think he must. Nigel tells Jaymz that he is one of the most versatile dancers on the show. He’s not leaving. While Ivan managed to drag Allison into the bottom three with him, Stanislav looked vulnerable out there with no partner, so… Stanislav is leaving!
Wow! WOW! I am shocked! What could happen next? Let’s tune in next week and see!
