The Amazing Race 10: The Finish Line, Episode 6 by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 10/27/2006 Peggy Bunker and Jon Weiss are back with another episode of The Finish Line! This week they're joined by Peter & Sarah. Considering all the flack Peter's been getting on the show and in other media, this should be an interesting interview. And just how lost were they? Let's see! Peggy Bunker and Jon Weiss greet us as usual. They look cute as bugs today, I must say. Peggy notes that the Cho Brothers put their game on the line this week and the models – Peggy loves her some model boys! – barely made it through yet again. Peter & Sarah are in the house! Jon and Peggy agree the show this week was fabulous! Peggy plugs for phone calls and Jon giggles about what an interesting show it's going to be this week. Jon then launches into this week's Ringmaster Recap! Jon is slowly, but surely, getting smoother with these recaps. He goes over the highlights of the show in the course of a minute or two. After Jon's recap, Peggy greets Peter & Sarah. They look pretty much the same as how they did while on the race. I notice their chairs aren't all that close together – I wonder if there's a reason for that? Peggy notes that she's happy to have them here, even though Peter & Sarah probably would want to have been on the show in five or six weeks. Peggy finally gets to ask Peter just what he was snacking on while he and Sarah were arguing a couple of weeks ago. Apparently, they were just potato chips. Peter loooooves him some potato chips! Jon's surprised, but says they looked good. Peggy notes it was an intense moment and Peter was an intense snacker. Peter says any kind of food was good and that was probably the most nutritious thing he ate all week. Peggy notes that both Peter & Sarah are top-notch athletes and very into fitness. She asked how it was on the race with the lack of nutrition. Peter says it's like driving a sports car and you're used to premium unleaded gas and then you go to regular. You feel like garbage and you're not sleeping or eating well and your mind starts to wander. Sarah says the sleep deprivation and bad food was the hardest part of the race. Jon notes that everyone always enjoys the pit stops because you can catch up a bit on food and sleep. Now Jon asks if they now think the race is more of a mental game than a physical one. Peter says it's a third across the board: mental, physical, and luck. Peggy asks what happened this past leg. Peter says Sarah rocked the physical and mental parts of the leg. Sarah says they had a good day and then they had a bad map. They talked to about a dozen people in Kuwait and nobody had heard of the camel racing place. Then when they tried to find the other detour they were directed to the wrong neighborhood and kept being taken to a supermarket. Peter says it actually got scary at night. Sarah says it was desolate and there weren't many women about. Jon notes that he and Al had a scary situation on the North Korea border that they had to vacate quickly. Peter says that he and Sarah ended up on a dark back street where a man was praying at a gate. The people there thought Peter & Sarah were with the media and a few hours ago they had executed a man in the parking lot – beheaded him. Security stepped in and said they had to leave the area now. Yikes! That couldn't have been fun. Jon says that you don't think about your security on the race. The only time they thought of it was when they got in that situation at the North Korean border. Peggy asks what Peter & Sarah's mindset was when it was getting dark and they were having all those problems. Peter said they went to Starbucks! Snork. They had coffee then went to McDonalds for lunch and a Ruby Tuesday. The producers pulled them then and presumably directed them to where they had to go. It was dark with scary streets. The only women out were wearing black and had their faces covered – except for Sarah. Sarah notes that when it got dark her hopes sank. She's an optimist, but that was tough. Now it's time to see this week's “scariest moment.” We see a clip of the teams doing this week's Roadblock, climbing the ladder on one of the Kuwaiti Towers. Some of the racers have more trouble with the roadblock than others – particularly Erwin. Peggy says people want to know why Sarah did all of the climbing! How come? Peter oddly says it's because “I'm a boy.” Sarah then jumps in and says there was a strategy behind it. The team members have to split the Roadblocks. You have to make a decision based on the brief clue you get. Sarah says that in Vietnam she thought it would be a swimming Roadblock, not a climbing one. She doesn't really answer why she did the climb on the Kuwaiti Towers. We get a call from Alan in Ohio. He says he wanted to know about why Sarah did so many stunts instead of Peter. He says he enjoyed watching them. Alan says they wondered why Peter did so little. Peter said it was always Sarah's decision, not his. Peter basically pushes it all off on Sarah. He says they read the clue together and then Sarah decided things. Sarah says that they wanted to make sure it wouldn't get to the point where Sarah had to do all the final Roadblocks no matter what. Sarah again says the clues were often confusing and you didn't know what you'd have to do. This answer still doesn't explain the Kuwaiti Towers climb and Jon and Peggy don't push them on it. Bleah. After a break, they put a Wikipedia quote about Kuwait up: “Kuwait is a small, rich, relatively open economy with proven crude oil reserves of 96 billion barrels – 10% of the world reserves.” Jon looks like he found that information intriguing. Peggy now asks Peter & Sarah what they thought of the countries they visited on the race. Sarah says she loved the locations they picked on this season. She thought it was cool they went to the Far East first. She thought Mongolia was fantastic and she would go back. She also loved Kuwait. Sarah wants to go back and “finish her race around the world” now. Peter says Mongolia was his favorite place. The people were beautiful and friendly and it was a very different world. Peter notes that you do get to see some of the Middle East on TV. You know about Kuwait from Iraq's invasion. Being there was interesting because they got to see a lot of the damage from the war. But Mongolia was his favorite. It's a stunningly beautiful country. Peggy says that there's a yak/ox in Mongolia that's not too fond of them! Peter says it was two yaks and “we” think it was the glare off of Sarah's metal leg. Sarah says she's not sure about that and Peggy notes that Sarah was wearing long pants in the task. So much for blaming that one on Sarah, Peter! We now get a call from Suema (?) in Kuwait! Well, actually she's calling from Boston, but she grew up in Kuwait and her parents live right by the towers there. She says that watching the episode was awesome. She felt like the racers were her. She could really relate to the issues they had trying to find places and looking for food. Peter asks if she knows where the camels are! Suema says that they should always ask at a four- or five-star hotel. Peter says that was the first place they tried. Sarah says they tried three of them and nobody could tell them where to go. Jon asks how many miles they drove in total. Peter says they drove 457 kilometers in Kuwait. He says they had to stop and fill the tank with the money they had begged for earlier. Peggy then takes us to a clip of Peter & Sarah's frustration trying to find the Detour in Kuwait. The clip ends with Peter griping to Sarah about screwing up with the clue. Peggy and Jon chastise him a bit and Peter says that he was the driver and Sarah was the navigator! Peggy says Sarah just scaled a building and put together a tough puzzle and you're complaining about the driving! Sarah nods heartily in agreement. Sarah says it was a hot, hard day and they had some bad luck. They completed all of their tasks and then just had a bad day. Jon notes they came in first and second a lot on the legs and nobody expected them to go out now. Peter says they were about two miles away from the task then made one wrong turn and ended up eighty miles away. Peggy says that underlying tensions come out on the race. She asks what's going on between the two of them now. They both say, “we're friends.” Peggy notes that was a very political answer. Jon moves on and asks about Sarah's hydraulic leg. He wants to know if they brought tools or other things on the race. Jon asks about the leak with the hydraulics and how the legs worked. Sarah says she brought one leg and two different types of feet – one for running and one for walking. They had also brought a spare knee, but they went through the spare knee too. Peter says the hydraulics was the one thing he couldn't fix. Both knees went out and it was very frustrating. It's like a screen door, the hydraulics make the door shut slowly. Without that, the door slams shut. Her leg was like that and it made it really hard for Sarah. It took a huge toll on her physically. Peter says he ended up having to carry her pack, although we didn't see much of that. Leanna from Canada now calls and says Peter & Sarah are both doing a wonderful job. She wants to know who Peter, Sarah, and Jon think of as their favorite racers. Leanna also wants to see celebrities or former racers on the next race, especially Jon! Jon says thanks for the spoiler. Peter & Sarah say they really bonded with Duke & Lauren. They spent the 28-hour train ride to Mongolia with them. Peggy says, speaking of Duke, he's on the phone right now! They all say hello – or “What's up my brotha” in Peter's case. Ahem. Peter says he needs to tell the story about Duke and the lady on the plane in Vietnam. Peter talks about the Vietnamese lady from the plane that they took home before going to the prison. Apparently, Peter & Sarah had their cab follow Duke & Lauren's cab. Peter flipped out when he found out they were dropping her off someplace else first. He thought they were doing a favor for Duke's “one night stand.” But they actually ended up being the first two teams to the prison, so it worked out. Duke says he thought Peter & Sarah were a strong team and they should have allied with them more. Duke signs off after Peter does almost all of the talking, and we now get to hear from Joe from Land O' Lakes, Florida. Joe says Sarah & Peter are awesome! He saw a special about Sarah doing the Ironman triathlon that was very cool. Joe says he doesn't mean to be rude, but he didn't like Peter until he saw his parting words. Joe then asks why Sarah didn't ask for more help from Peter in the race – like in the rice paddies. Sarah says that the paddies were very narrow. She thought she could run it, but she decided to be safe and crawled to get to the Pit Stop. Sarah then says she was shocked to see how many teams just mosied along getting to the Pit Stop. She says you need to move as fast as you can to get there! Peggy and Jon agree with Sarah, saying some of the teams don't seem as animated as they should be going to the Pit Stop. Peter notes that he did offer to carry Sarah's bag. Jon says that's good, because he has really been wondering why Peter wasn't helping Sarah more in the race. Peter weakly says that he thinks he always offered, but sometimes he got really, really focused and his communication broke down – and Sarah didn't know how to deal with that. Peter goes on to say that Sarah is one of the strongest racers out there and she really doesn't need help. Peter sees himself as Sarah's support person. She's out to prove to soldiers coming back from Iraq and the world that she can do this (presumably as a person with one leg). Peggy says the world really saw how competent Sarah is and she loved her encouragement to herself on the race. As they show a clip of Sarah climbing the Great Wall, Peter says that he would analyze what Sarah was doing and try to help her out where he could. His job was to encourage her. Peter says she struggled, but she figured things out and once she calmed down, she could do it. I'm sorry, but Peter still isn't coming across very well to me. He talks like Sarah was a one-person team and he was just her pit crew or something. This is supposed to be a team race. Eh. Now Peggy brings up the Cho Brothers’ self-sacrifice in helping David & Mary win the Fast Forward this week. She shows us the clip of the Chos faking the other teams out to keep them from going for the Fast Forward to ensure that David & Mary could get it. The clip ends with David & Mary checking in and thanking the Cho Brothers. Peggy says that it was great. She said she couldn't get a read on Erwin & Godwin, but she takes it back. She thinks they're great! She loves them! Jon points out that the Chos said that they had become really good friends with David & Mary. Even though you don't spend much time with other teams, you really form a bond. You embrace every team. Jon says Godwin & Erwin are his team now. Peter says that Godwin & Erwin are really great, funny guys. Peggy asks Peter & Sarah what they think of the Chos’ risk this past week. Peter says that they started a pact and stuck by it. Sarah says the “back pack” alliance really stuck, but the Chos went above and beyond. Peggy now asks Jon to explain how a Fast Forward works. Jon points out that on his race there was a Fast Forward in every leg, but now there are only two Fast Forwards on the whole race. A team can only use one Fast Forward. If a team gets to the Fast Forward after it has been taken, they have to go back and do the rest of the tasks on the leg. We now get a call from Don in Long Island – Sarah's dad! Don says that Peter & Sarah are awesome! He says there are a lot of people out on Long Island who don't know what to do on Sunday nights now. He then asks them what stands out most for them from their experiences on the race. Sarah says the climbs stand out for her. It was very hard for her to do them and she does have a bit of a fear of heights. The Great Wall will particularly stand out, because it is the Great Wall and it was the first big climb. We now get a call from Darlene in Land O’ Lakes, Florida (Joe's co-worker). She says she has a son who is handicapped and she really appreciates Sarah being on the race. She showed Darlene's son a lot, being on the race. Darlene wonders if Peter sensed how frustrated Sarah was with him when he was so blunt with her. Peter says he did at times and they tried to make adjustments at the Pit Stops. He knows Sarah is mentally and physically very strong and the frustrations came with so little food and sleep and with such great pressure. He could sense the frustration. He notes how well they did on the first three legs, but he does recognize it now. It's now time for Peter & Sarah's post race postcard. Sarah wants to thank everyone on the production for giving them the opportunity to do the race. She notes there's a whole team of people on the race, including the cameramen, and they couldn't do it without them. She also thanks all the other racers. Peter says CBS is a first class organization and there's not one racer he dislikes. He's gotten some fantastic memories too. Peggy now asks what's up for Peter & Sarah next. Peter says that he just got a job as the Director position at the Navy section of the Department of Defense, so he'll be dealing with folks with disabilities coming back from Iraq and helping them. Peter says he likes helping people go back to work and otherwise regain their lives. That is indeed a good thing he does. Peter says he thinks Sarah did a great job on the race and he'd do it again if he had the opportunity. Sarah says she's working as a motivational speaker at universities and other locales. Peggy and Jon now say goodbye to Peter & Sarah and turn to the other teams on the race. Jon says that as of this leg, Erwin & Godwin have become his favorite team on the race. After what they did for David & Mary he's really rooting for them. Peggy completely agrees. She thought helping David & Mary was a completely selfless act. Speaking of David & Mary, Jon says that they have to take advantage of coming in first this leg and make some smart decisions as they race. They could stay in the race for a while, if they play well. Peggy says she loves that Rob & Kimberly were being snarky and arguing again. They're back and it’s great! Jon notes that the bickering seems to work for them, because they do better when they're arguing. Peggy and Jon now turn to Dustin & Kandice. Peggy says they need to call them something more than the Beauty Queens, because they are some serious competitors. Jon says that they are a threat. They handled those hundred pound sacks very well. They're a team to watch and he hopes they make the finale. Peggy says that Lyn & Karlyn are also really hanging in there. Jon notes there seems to be a lot of bickering between Lyn & Karlyn and the Beauty Queens. Finally, Peggy brings up her boys, James & Tyler. She thinks the models thought they were out of the race, but they squeaked by. Jon notes that this is the second week in a row they barely stayed out of last place. They're going to have to be careful. A lot of it is luck and they were really strong in the beginning of the race, but you have to make good decisions and different cultures can be challenging. Peggy now takes us to a brief clip from next week's episode. We see Lyn & Karlyn fighting with Dustin & Kandice and we see the Beauty Queens having what looks like a minor car accident. Peggy's ready for some fighting! We'll have to wait until Sunday to see if anything really comes from the squabbling and the car-bus collision.

The Amazing Race 10, Episode 6 Insider: Pot, Meet Kettle by Heathyr Fields Ford -- 10/27/2006 The teams on this season of The Amazing Race are starting to show signs of strain, and there's a definite split between two groups. How is this causing some of the teams to become hypocritical? And how does this lead to a great Peter moment? Heathyr has all this and more, inside! All right, I’m late in writing, it’s late here tonight, I’m tired, and I think I may have to sell my second oldest son (good thing I have a spare!), so I’m going to just jump right into the recap of the clips without my usual banter. You may all sigh with relief now! Beauty Queens Bicker: Post-race, Dustin & Kandice are mildly, MILDLY, bickering over the fact that one used the other’s makeup without asking. She doesn’t mind sharing, but she wants to be asked first. The other one knew she wouldn’t mind, so doesn’t get how she could be upset over it. And there’s something about not understanding how she could be upset because she has a boatload of brothers. I don’t follow the logic there. Also, the one offended also has a tendency to place blame and not apologize, or thus sayeth Miss NY. Miss CA asks Miss NY to please tell her when she’s doing this, because if she doesn’t know she’s doing something that irritates, she can’t fix it or apologize for it. Miss NY doesn’t want to do that because she just apologizes and doesn’t need to be told. She’s missing the point that CA doesn’t realize it, and wants to be told, so she can do the important apology. It’s sort of a bizarre argument to start with make up and wind up with blame, but hey. The key point to take away from this though, is that the friends are totally calm when bickering and come to good conclusions. They apologize to each other, come up with a plan of action for the future, and move on. Kimberly Shows No Depth: Post-race with Rob & Kimberly and Kimberly seriously lacks something. She’s all wide-eyed about how she was scared to come to Kuwait once Rob told her some of our troops were there. Uh, shouldn’t that make you feel safer? Whatever. The scary point: she didn’t know that on her own. Rob cuts in that he respects the troops even more after being in this climate. He says it’s harsh out there with the heat and wind and dirt. They may be in the coast now, but they were out in the sticks earlier, he reminds us, and he can feel for those guys . It seems sincere. Final Words, Sarah: Amusingly enough, despite the glowing words on both sides you’ll hear, the final words were done separately for both Peter and Sarah. Sarah explains that Peter is aggressive and Type A on this race, but he does have a kind and sensitive side. She goes on about how aware of the world he is, and how he truly and sincerely wants to come back to one of the areas they saw on the race and help kids in that area. That’s all well and good, but until he can treat people well in stressful circumstances, then he’s still a putz, k? K. Final Words, Peter: This is one of the more normal times you’ll see Peter on camera. He actually looks less like a Team America puppet and more like a human being. He proclaims that he and Sarah do have a strong bond, but it’s just not the love bond they were seeing if they might have. He explains they have had some incredible experiences together that are physically and emotionally draining. He emphasizes this a lot, so that we all understand that to HIM, this race wasn’t that, but everything else they’ve done is SO much better and no one else could understand that. He rubs this point in by stating that other people (us lessers, you know) have sunsets together, but he and Sarah share trying challenges. Yeah, buddy? You have four kids in under 23 months, get a divorce, go back to college, work full-time, have four kids in diapers, etc and so on, then try to integrate a new boyfriend into the chaos of your life. It’s not all sunsets and strokings! Sorry, bucko, everyone’s life has challenges. Yours are no more emotionally or physically draining then mine. It’s a pet peeve of mine that people cannot understand that others might go through things similar or at least on par with what they’re going through. It’s hard to quantify these things, so we should all be more considerate and less full of hubris, PETER. Beauty Queens Budget: The girls drive around in Kuwait waiting for the Towers to open and looking for food. They find the golden arches. Sigh. Am I the only one that finds the presence of McD’s everywhere to be a sign of the apocalypse and a degradation to unique cultures everywhere? Beauty Queens Beg: In the airport, the girls charm a French man out of $20 U.S. and then move elsewhere and charm an Alabaman out of the same. They’re fairly amusing and endearing during this all. They are genuine and entertainingly flirtatious with these guys. Not leading them on, but just being their natural selves. They are giddy with their profits and feel incredibly rich with forty more dollars to their name. Cho Bros & a Cop: What is with these boys and policemen? They get another policeman to drive them to the Pit Stop! Erwin & Godwin decide they have a newfound respect for international policemen. Heh. They explain that having a cop take them from Point A to Point B is the best, because they won’t lie, they know where they’re going, and they’ll get you there expeditiously. Downsides, in my book: they might get called off to an emergency leaving you high and dry. They might miss an emergency doing your non-urgent task. How do you know they won’t lie? Okay, while I’m on the Cho Brothers, a mini-rant. WHAT IS WITH YOU TWO? I like you. I like your life outlook. However, you are in a RACE. Yes, it’s an Amazing Race, but you could try to combine the two words and not just focus on the one (Amazing) at the exclusion of the other (Race). Dave & Mary are nice and all, I suppose, but seriously? I don’t know, I guess if you recognized that they truly need it more than you, and you’re fine, then I could see doing it. So never mind. Or, if you’re really sure of yourselves and devious, perhaps you’re thinking by doing that, you can pull the Back Packers along and then kick their asses at the end game? Hmmm. Erwin Forgets Directions: Erwin loses the clue and cannot find it. He searches for it, and the directions to where they are going, to no avail. Godwin is driving. I thought you got a penalty for a lost clue?! Godwin carefully chides Erwin, and jokes also that he’s bad for having clues. Erwin takes it like a man, baby, and admits it. These two have the most good-natured disagreements out of everyone. It’s refreshing. And oddly enough, it’s not unusual this season. We have a lot of decent talkers instead of screamers. Rob & Kimberly on Eating: Rob seems remarkably worried about the numerous scrawny dogs around the airport and encourages Kimberly to feed one. She flips out because he also wants to eat something, and she is hording their food for the next day. This turns into a childish argument between the two that I really don’t have the patience to recap. It boils down to: I want my food. STOMP. I don’t want you to have it. STOMP. They feed the dogs something. It’s odd. Rob on Kimberly’s Non-Girlie Spirit: Rob’s proud of her at putting her vanity aside and racing as-is pretty much. Huh. He says her appearance is important to her usually, and he doesn’t mind, it’s part of who she is. He is proud of her that she can put something like that aside for them and this race. Kimberly remarks that she’s been thinking on when they first met at the Skybar (?) and how it was all butterflies and she got giddy (maybe that was the alcohol, honey). She still feels the same way. What they’re doing now is intense though, and not at all romantic. She likes that he’s all scruffy-faced and letting go. They want to win. That’s what it’s all about right now. I like them in this clip. They seem genuinely supportive of each other. They just argue like two year olds. Speaking of that, CBS, you must contact me! I have the perfect Amazing Race couple! Forty years of marriage, they do adventure travel sometimes, and they love the show. They also bicker incessantly when doing hard camping (like 2 weeks in the national park up in Alaska that’s above the Arctic Circle or something). The wife is convinced they’d be the “love to hate them” couple of the season, and I want to see these two on my screen! Come on, old people that are nasty? Woo hoo! I can slam people I know! How could would that be? Oh, oops, digressing when I said I wouldn’t. Cough. ANYWAY. Rob the Idiot: Rob leaves his freakin’ fanny pack ON THE AIRPLANE. With his passport. This clip is freaking annoying as he runs around saying “DUDE!” a lot. Somewhere, Jeff Spicoli wants to kick his ass. They do eventually get it, and she bitches at him lightly. Their tones just grate, even when it’s not full out arguing. Totally stupid. He admits that, fortunately, so I don’t have to whup him. Team Zoolander Cons Travel Agents: The boys are overly thrilled about the service they received at a travel agent in Chennai. They’re thrilled with the earliest flight out too. They explain that nothing much was happening with the agent they were dealing with, when suddenly the manager came out and started helping them and snapping his fingers at everyone to start helping them. Tyler & James are overly impressed by this sort of treatment. Hey bud, it was the television cameras, I’d bet money! Pot Meet Kettle: Lyn (? The chunkier one) is bitching that the Barbies seem sneaky one minute then nice the next. She doesn’t like that. She wants her people to be consistent and straight forward. Be bitchy if you’re bitchy. Be nice if you’re nice. You know, that sort of black and white world a kindergartner knows doesn’t exist? They both complain how the girls switch all the time, and it’s wrong. Hmmm, how about the fact that you’re SUPER nice to the Back Packers, then turn around and play nasty with the others? How about you talk about running a clean race, then physically manhandle a Kuwaiti man to keep him from talking to Dustin & Kandice? Karlyn oddly proclaims that the other teams aren’t really competition. They all make mistakes, but she and Lyn are running a clean race. She appears under the delusion that slow and steady wins this race. Guess what? It might, but I doubt it. I so want them gone next week so she can eat those stupid words. Kettle Meet Pot: Waiting for the tower climb, Peter & Sarah talk with Rob & Kimberly and Tyler & James about the Back Packers. Peter explains that everyone at the towers does their own race but the other three teams (Erwin & Godwin, Lyn & Karlyn and David & Mary) all stick together. Team Zoolander chimes in that those three teams ensure there is a division between the two groups, when the other groups really didn’t see one. He says they try to talk to them all the time, but they walk right by the models. Rob pipes up that Alabama (Lyn & Karlyn) just that morning wouldn’t acknowledge him at all when he walked by and said ‘hi’. He exclaims he was air and didn’t exist! Then, he says, at dinners at Pit Stops, where they’re all forced together, suddenly Lyn & Karlyn will want to talk sometimes. Sarah says that Karlyn won’t talk to her at all, even at dinner. Peter mentions he tries to draw them out in conversation, and they won’t. He proclaims it must be just their normal personalities, not just the race, because, get this, everyone’s true colors come out on the race. Pardon me while I die laughing at the irony. Tyler & James inform everyone that they sat down with Lyn at breakfast one morning, and she just got up without saying a word and sat down with Kentucky. SHEESH. Rob adds that he doesn’t look at the women like they’re weak, they put that stereotype on themselves. They’re all here in the race at this point, so they must be doing something right. I have less respect for ALL the Back Pack after that conversation. And Peter? HAH HA HA HA! Sarah & Beauty Queens on Budgeting: In the airport, Sarah bubbles about some cheap, good food she got to one of the BQs. The other one wanders over, and gets her ear full from her partner. They discuss the merits of spending what little they have.
