Episode 6: Four Families, Three Roses
The Bachelor 10, Episode 6: Four Families, Three Roses by Ashley Lundy -- 05/09/2007 We are down to the final four in this sixth episode of The Bachelor, and it’s time for hometown visits. Is Danielle’s dad too overprotective? How does Andy handle the news of Bevin’s divorce? Does Tessa’s family approve of Andy? What in the world happens with Amber’s hometown visit? Find out here! Wow, the final four. I can’t believe it. Neither can our bachelor. Andy says he’s had enough of the group dating. He needs to get serious. Cue some videos of Andy with the ladies. Andy knew, from the beginning, that Tessa was a very dynamic woman. She’s mature, experienced, and sophisticated. When he’s with Tessa, he feels amazing emotions and like he’s really trying to woo her. Although, Tessa hasn’t put her heart on her sleeve yet and let him know how she feels about him. Andy says that he believes Danielle is the most invested. He knows she’s tough because she’s been through a lot. Since they’ve both had a tragic loss, he sees her as a source of strength. Still, is she a friend or a life-long partner? That’s the second time he’s asked that! I vote friend. He tells us that he’s really into Amber. She’s got a beautiful smile and she’s warm, but he can’t get over the fact that she’s 23. He doesn’t normally like younger women. He really enjoyed seeing her with the kids on the playground date. He’s knows she would make a good mother and that’s so attractive. The chemistry with Bevin is so natural. When Andy sees her, there’s an electric current. He’s continually impressed with Bevin. He loves her athletic side, how she played with the children at the playground, her sweetness, her beauty. She just keeps getting better and better. Andy thinks having to choose between all these great ladies is impossible, so he hopes meeting the families will help him decide. First we go to Seattle for Bevin’s hometown visit. She can’t wait to get this date started. A limo pulls up and out jolts Andy, straight to Bevin. She jumps right on him, wraps her legs around him and they kiss. And giggle. Andy says that the chemistry between him and Bevin is the most of any of the four women remaining. He tells her, “I’m in heaven with Bevin!” How dorky! Really, could they be any cuter? They are at Snoqualmie Falls, thirty minutes east of Seattle. Her parents took her there, so she wanted to experience it with Andy because it is so beautiful. They go stand on a pier and enjoy the powerful waterfall. I must say, it is lovely. Andy thinks it’s beautiful, but wants to know when Bevin used to come here. She came when she was in high school. She would hike down there with her friends and they would talk. Andy asks if she ever hiked down there with boys. She says no and giggles. He cutely teases her that he is the first boy she has brought there then. She says yes and this time she giggles and blushes. Bevin says it is very romantic to be at the waterfall with Andy. Although, she is freaking out because it’s time to tell Andy about the divorce. She’s afraid that he will change his mind about her after he finds out. So, they are picnicking. Andy’s chomping on some apples. Bevin tells him that before he meets her parents, she has something to tell him. She was once a teenager, who was stubborn, rebelled against her parents, and got married. It didn’t last long, because she wasn’t ready. She learned a lot about herself and it’s shaped who she is now. Andy appreciates the information. He says he has a very idealistic view, in which marriage is not taken lightly. How does she feel about it now? She says she would do anything to make sure she put 100% into a relationship before she considered marriage again. Andy seems glad to hear it. Bevin goes on to say that she never thought it would happen to her, that she would be divorced. It gave her perspective on what it really takes to make a relationship work. She hopes he can understand. Andy tells her that he could tell from day one that she is the most mature lady. She knows what she wants. He appreciates her honesty. Andy tells us that it hit him hard when Bevin told him about the divorce. Marriage means so much to him. He just can’t stomach the idea of divorce. I know it’s terrible and all, man, but it does happen. To loads of good people. I really hope he doesn’t let this bother him too much. Then again, I can only imagine finding out about thirty minutes before meeting the girl’s parents! They are in the limo, driving to Bevin’s parents house. Bevin says that after telling Andy about the divorce and getting the weight off her shoulders, she’s ready to introduce him to her family. Andy says the previous marriage information raised a red flag about Bevin. It’s concerning to him, but he wants to move on, because he’s there to meet her parents. They arrive and the family is waiting on the patio. Bevin and her dad, Ken, have an emotional hug that lasts so long, Andy has to introduce himself to Bevin’s mother, Anna, her step-mom, Vicky, and her sister, Ona. Bevin and Ona. I wonder what the story is on those names. Andy gives them flowers and some Hawaiian coffee. Andy tells us he is just going to be himself and let her family know who he is and how he feels about Bevin. We see Andy and Bevin telling the story of her ankle accident at bachelorette boot camp. Apparently, her ankle has healed a lot since then. Bevin thought that Andy got along with her family well. They all clicked. Andy was relaxed and everyone was comfortable around him. At the dinner table, Ona, Bevin’s sister, asks Andy about the three other ladies left in the competition. She is worried about where it goes from here. Andy tells Ona that he sees something very special in Bevin. He couldn’t wait to see her today! He would kiss her now if he weren’t at the dinner table. Step-mom Vicky gives him permission! He doesn’t take it. A real gentlemen, he is. Andy says it is very easy to get along with everyone in Bevin’s family. These are his kind of people. Mom Anna gives Andy a gift. It’s a painting she did, as a memento of the northwest, their family, and the beautiful evening they spent with him. He thinks this is so sweet. It really really is. Bevin is overwhelmed. Out of everyone in the family, her mom is the toughest critic on who she has dated. To see Andy and her mom hugging, it was golden. She starts really crying and excuses herself from the table. Later, Bevin and Ken talk privately. He asks his daughter if she loves Andy. She sighs and says she obviously feels something for him. He’s a great guy. She never meets guys that are like Andy and she cries again. Dad almost starts to cry. He asks her why she is holding back. She just doesn’t want to get her heart broken. She’s tired of that. The only thing that gives her hope is the feeling she has when she’s with Andy. Dad tells her to believe in that. What other proof does she need? She says, “That stupid final rose!” Ha! Dad says there’s no guarantee, but if you don’t risk it, you will always regret it. She knows she has to let go. Bevin says her dad’s advice was so helpful. For him to tell her to give her all makes her feel so much better about taking the risk. Andy tells the family that Bevin is a wonderful daughter and he knows now why she is that way. It’s time for him to go. They have goodbye hugs. Andy sees how warm and supportive Bevin’s family is and that’s what family is all about. He tells Bevin that her family is “amazing.” Bevin tells us that love is a strong word that she doesn’t use lightly. It’s a big deal for her to say, but she feels like she’s falling in love with Andy. Andy says it was a remarkable day. The divorce was something she went through in her life, but he wants to trust that, in the end, true love will prevail. Now, it’s time for Danielle’s hometown visit. She is excited to share one of the biggest parts of her life, which is her family. They meet on a bridge somewhere and have a nice big giant hug. Andy tells us that, because of Danielle’s past tragedy, he can feel her strength when he’s around her. He wants a wife that can handle hard times. He tells her that he’s nervous to meet her parents. The walk into a house where he is greeted by father, Jim, mother, Nancy, and little sister, Kaitlin. They have a toast. Everyone has wine, but dad has a beer. I notice this because, for whatever reason, I am craving a brewski. I’ll settle for my Mountain Dew. Mmm. Uh, anyway. Danielle says that she still lives at home and her family’s opinion means everything to her. In the kitchen, Danielle asks her mom and sister if she and Andy make a cute couple. They say yes. Danielle comments on how guys like Andy don’t even really exist. He’s so put together, he’s ambitious, he loves his family and he’s really looking for his life partner. Mother Nancy says it’s great to see Danielle happy because she had a rough road for a while, but she doesn’t want to see her get hurt. Andy and father Jim are chatting at the dinner table. Andy tells Jim he has an amazing daughter. Jim says Danielle’s been nothing but a joy and he wants her to be happy. As her father, he is the provider and the protector. She deserves the best. I love dads. Andy tells us that Jim is very serious and a strong father. They don’t get into the death of Danielle’s college boyfriend, though they talk around it. Jim is obviously concerned about what his daughter is getting into. Nancy tells Andy that her biggest concern is Andy taking Danielle away to Hawaii. Will Andy stay in Hawaii? He understands that Danielle’s family is important to her, but he hopes that she will be able to travel with him because long-distance relationships are very hard. Danielle chimes in that if you can find what makes you happy, that’s most important. Little sister Kaitlin tells us the only thing making her nervous about Andy is that he is dating three other girls right now. She thinks he’s a great guy, but she’s worried that he will break Danielle’s heart. Ya know, Danielle’s family are making her out to be so fragile. She took a huge leap even being on the show. They need to just let her have the experience. You never know how wonderful things could turn out. Andy tells the family that he didn’t think the experience would be so hard emotionally, but he is a big believer in fate. They agree that sounds like something Danielle would say too. It’s time for father Jim to bust loose and show off his mad drumming skills. They all head downstairs and he plays for them. He even gives Andy a lesson. The whole family cheers. Then they do some belly dancing, with little skirts on and all. Andy says it feels like coming home. Next, there’s pictures! There’s Danielle in braces and a special one of Jim and Nancy crossing the finish of the New York marathon in 1994. Andy says that’s what he thinks marriage is all about. Jim says he likes Andy because he is genuine and his daughter is happy. He imagines her as “Mrs. Lt. Andy Baldwin… it’s got a nice ring to it.” Whoa. He’s going to doodle it all over his notebook when they leave. Andy and Danielle kiss goodbye. They say they will miss each other. Danielle says she has real feelings for Andy. She is ready to find love and it might be right in front of her. Now, we go to Washington, D.C. to meet Tessa’s family. They meet on a snowy day by the Washington monument. Andy tells us that his romance with Tessa, thus far, has been a rollercoaster. He hopes that she is able to pour out her affection and open herself up to him. They are going to go to her mom’s house later. In the meantime, while Tessa was waiting, she made a giant snowball for Andy. They play around in the snow, being all cutesy. Ding dong! They arrive at Tessa’s mom’s house. Andy meets mom, Romana, dad, Tom, sister, Mercy, and best friend, Samantha. Romana’s first thought is that Andy’s really fit and handsome, but that’s just first appearances. Andy tells the family about Tessa trying on dresses for him for their fairytale date. Dad wants a little clarification on this. Andy assures him that she didn’t actually change in front of him. Whew. Close one. Tessa says she needs to go change her clothes and asks her family to keep Andy entertained. Off she goes and he’s left in the family clutches. Andy says they can grill him if he can have another beer. Ha! I think it’s best friend, Samantha, that comments on Andy being the perfect guy, so she asks what his faults are. He can’t sing or cook. Sister Mercy asks how it was dating multiple girls at one time. Andy said it was so hard, harder than he could ever imagine. Samantha wants to know: when he settles down, is he going to be a suburb guy or city person? He jokingly says that he’d like to have a number of homes. She points out that she and Tessa grew up in the city of D.C., but some people grew up in the suburbs thirty minutes away. That’s a big difference in her eyes. Samantha thinks that Andy is doing a good job of dodging a lot of questions, but Tessa’s her best friend, so she needs to see if he can hang. Samantha asks Andy if some of the other girls have qualities that Tessa is lacking. He says he’s sweating bullets. He then says the other women have been quick to show affection, but Tessa has made it clear that she takes baby steps. Often times, he feels like he’s courting her. Mercy asks him if he keeps the others around just because he has to? Andy looks so uncomfortable. Andy says it is a household full of skeptics. The stakes are huge here. If Tessa’s family does not approve of him, then it’s over. They get the seating arrangements worked out and sit down for dinner. Romana asks Andy about his career, his degree, his schooling, and his residency. Samantha asks if he sees a marriage proposal for the end of the show. He doesn’t know. Romana asks where the honeymoon would be. Andy says somewhere he could take them all with them. He says he loves to do dishes, and offers to do them all of the sudden. I think he’s overwhelmed. Tom offers to help Andy and says that the men are doing the dishes tonight. The girls stay behind and ask Tessa if she has been having fun. She has. It’s been fun and stressful. She’s glad she did it. If she hadn’t, she would regret it. Andy asks Tom if Tessa has brought many men home. Some, but she’s very careful. The girls ask Tessa if she is holding back. She says a little bit. She’s been cautious. Andy really does like the three other girls. Andy asks Tom if he knew Tessa was coming on the show. He says he saw her before she went on the show and her attitude was that it was going to be fun. She just wanted to have a little fun, no matter what happens. Andy says that when he heard that Tessa came on the show for fun, it threw up the red flag. He is ready to turn the tables on the questioning and ask the girls some things about Tessa. First, he wants to know if Tessa is truly looking for a mate or if this is just for fun. Samantha says that, initially, it was probably for fun. Mercy says Tessa marches to her own beat. Andy says that out of the four women, he knows how three of them feel about him. He’s not leaving D.C. until he knows how Tessa feels about him too. We shoot forward to him and Tessa alone on the couch and he point blank asks her how she feels. After a big sigh, she says she feels like she has a natural instinct to question how genuine this all is. He tells her that he feels so much potential with her. If she feels the love and wants that, then she will go for it. If she doesn’t, then she won’t. Tessa says that part of herself tells her that she is overthinking and the other part thinks she’s setting herself up to get really hurt. He tells her that he feels strongly about her. The more she opens up, the more he can too and the more wonderful this all can be. Tessa says that when she is with Andy, she feels like she wants to know where it’s all going. He asks her what she wants to come out of this situation. She wants to fall in love. He asks with who. She says, “I want to fall in love with you.” He says, “Alright, I want to fall in love with you too.” They have a big kiss. He feels that made a solid impact. He can’t wait to see Tessa again. Now, Andy visits Amber in Sugar Land, Texas. She is so excited to show Andy her classroom and her students. He pulls up in a Jeep to Amber’s school. He goes to her classroom. There are no students in there yet. He sits at a desk, raises his hand, and asks the teacher for a kiss. She obliges, but says she can’t really do that normally. Heh. Here come the kids! I guess it’s the first time for them to see Amber because she’s been on the show, so she cries a little bit. There is a hearing-impaired teacher who helps Andy teach the kids how to do the “aloha” sign. The kids ask him questions. One girl asks if Andy likes their teacher. He says he likes her very much and that they met on a “special mission.” He is so super sweet with the kids. So is Amber. Everyone is having a good time, but Andy and Amber have to leave. Amber takes Andy outside to talk to him. She knows it’s a hometown visit to meet her parents, but she wants him to meet her aunt and uncle instead. Although, there seems to be some trouble with that plan now and she doesn’t know if they are coming. Amber tells us that she has a rocky family relationship. Her parents aren’t very supportive of this. I guess “this” means the show. She is really hoping he can meet her aunt because she is a huge part of her life. Amber calls her aunt and gets the bummer news that the aunt can’t make it. She cries a little and says it’s embarrassing that Andy got to meet three other families that might be future in-laws, but he didn’t get to meet any of her family. He doesn’t get to see how she grew up. When her aunt says no, it crushes her. If she could have asked one favor, this would be it – for her to be there and meet Andy. This is terrible. Andy tells Amber that he understands. Meeting her aunt is just one piece of the puzzle. He still got to see Amber in her element, in her hometown, and in her classroom. He thinks he saw the real Amber, but the lack of visit was unfortunate. They are driving to Amber’s apartment to meet her roommate, Erin, and her dog, Pasha. Amber says it’s very important that Pasha approve of Andy. It seems to go okay. Next, we get the roommate, Erin, interviewing Andy. She is having a hard time understanding that there are divers in the Navy. And that Andy is both a diver and a doctor. Oh, geez. Amber sums it up for Erin by saying, “he’s basically really cool.” Then the girls have a laugh at Erin calling Amber, “Amby.” Andy says it is a different dynamic going to Amber’s apartment. It is total college sorority sisters hanging out. Amber is mature, but there is still that seven-year gap. Knock, knock! It’s Amber’s aunt at the door. Amber is so emotional, she breaks down. The aunt comes in and hugs Andy. He seems practically overjoyed that someone is there to save him from the sorority sisters. Indeed, he is glad to meet a member of Amber’s family. It is crucial to talk to her aunt one-on-one. The aunt, whose name I do not catch if it ias said, asks if he likes Amber. He says he does. He had an incredible mother growing up and he sees a lot of her qualities in Amber. Now Amber is telling Erin that she really likes Andy, like scary likes him. Erin likes him too and can see them together. Andy tells the aunt that he wants to settle down, but he doesn’t know where Amber stands. The aunt says that she thinks Amber is on her way to being a wife and a mother. She is very mature for her age. She’s ready. Amber cries some more, telling Erin about seeing Andy with her students. Erin thinks it will all work out, because Andy is super sweet. Aunt and Amber talk. The aunt thinks he’s a really nice guy. Amber thanks her for being there. The aunt can’t imagine if she had missed this today. Everything that Amber could want in a future husband is in Andy. Amber is really torn up about Andy not getting to meet her parents. The aunt just wants Amber to be happy and take a risk. She also wants Amber to remember that it’s hard for Andy too. Amber kisses Andy goodbye and says she will miss him. She tells us that she really likes him and she could see him being a part of her life and her future. Andy tells us that he feels so attracted to Amber. She’s so sexy. She’s so good with kids, but is she ready to make the commitment to marriage and a family. It’s rose ceremony time. The ladies are dressed in gowns back at the house. Chris welcomes them and reminds them that there are only three roses to give out, so one lady is going home. Out comes Andy. He says they are four of the most incredible women he has ever met. Now that he’s gone to their hometowns, he believes that even more. They are amazing. In the end, they are all searching for the same thing, true love. And, with that, he grabs the first rose and offers it to Tessa, who accepts. The next rose is offered to Bevin, and she runs to accept the rose. The third and final rose is offered to Danielle, who also accepts. Poor Amber is out of the competition. Amber hugs the other ladies goodbye first. Then she heads to Andy with a quizzical look on her face. He takes her to go talk. He sits her down and she says that she doesn’t understand at all. Yesterday was the most amazing day of her life. She needs to know why. Andy tells her that she’s been through a lot and she is very mature, but she is still quite a big younger. They are in different places in their lives. She felt a connection and she thought he felt the same way. He does. She is really crying now as she says that her age is just her age, not her maturity level. Besides, earlier he said that age didn’t matter, so please don’t say that to her now. He doesn’t say anything. He says he has a weight on his shoulders. She asks if it’s because he didn’t get to meet her family. He tells her no, no, that’s not it. He doesn’t want her to think that. That’s not it. They do have a connection, but he has to trust the stronger connections he has with the other three girls. He holds her while she has a good cry. Then he walks her to the limo. She is really sobbing and this is not enjoyable to watch. She gets in the limo and drives away. Amber says that Andy really lost something. In her head, she saw them living together and being together. She is always getting hurt by guys. Poor sweet little Amber. She really did have to do that last part of the competition practically alone and I feel for her, but if he didn’t feel it, then I don’t feel it. He toasts the final three with an “aloha” because it’s time to go to Hawaii! We close out the show with a clip of Andy finding out that Danielle is afraid of bananas. He makes her eat a bite and she washes it down with wine. I’ve never heard of hating bananas, but hey, it takes all kinds. Next week, we go to Andy’s home in Hawaii. There’s whales, Navy life, finally, we see Andy’s jeep, Andy and Bevin get frisky, there’s a psychic, and Tessa struggles with the fantasy suite cards. Oh, the drama.
