Episode 6 – Fight or Flight
The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 6 – Fight or Flight by Jenn Brasler -- 03/26/2007 Airport navigation is a big part of The Amazing Race - a later flight can spell your doom if you can’t make up for lost time. Why are Eric & Danielle asked to leave a plane? Can a risky flight decision help Charm keep their lead? And will bad airport luck leave Guido in the dust? Previously on Hey, Eric, YOU Got Beaten By “Queens,” Too: Seven teams left Argentina for Mozambique. Eric & Danielle clashed with Guido. The teams dealt with rats at an awesome Roadblock. Charm wound up leaving it in last place, but thanks to navigational trouble and unfortunately Detour choices, Charm came in first. Uchenna & Joyce got lost during their Detour and got to the Pit Stop last, but they’re still in the race thanks to a non-elimination leg. They’re marked for elimination and need to come in first out of the remaining seven teams: Charla & Mirna (Charm) - Cousins/Seriously? First? Ug Kandice & Dustin - Friends/Sometimes being able to paint nails comes in handy Teri & Ian - Married/Stomping on the youngun’s Oswald & Danny (Cha3) - Friends/I’d love to see them chase Phil again Bill & Joe (Guido) - Partners/Should just smack Eric and be done with it Eric & Danielle - Dating/Need to get off of my TV already Uchenna & Joyce - Married/Haven’t Been Giving Much of a Good Show Lately Our current Pit Stop is Maputo, Mozambique. Will Uchenna & Joyce avoid their 30-minute penalty by coming in first? Charm leave first at 9:07 p.m. They’re sent to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. There, at a ferry terminal, they’ll need to pull a number for a sailing dhow that will take them to Zanzibar. Mirna interviews that they’re leaving in first place, which is nerve-wracking because it’s the first time for them. She wants to prove to the other teams that it’s not a quirk. She thinks they need to take risks, because how else will they win? She helpfully tells their driver not to hit people in the road. I think that’s the first step in the driving test – don’t hit people. Kandice & Dustin leave 40 minutes later. Dustin notes that they haven’t been first in a leg yet, so they’re hoping this will be their week. If they can learn to read, I think they have a good chance. They joke that they’re competing against “too hot to handle,” which is what Charm’s shirts say. Teri & Ian leave. Ian interviews that if he’s gruff, he’s gruff, and he makes no apologies. Interesting, since he’s been a lot less gruff this season than in his original season. He says he believes in character and honor. If he doesn’t get the job done, he redoubles his efforts. Oswald pretends to be a hand model before opening his envelope. He interviews that the stress is getting to people. And then I completely blank out on everything else he’s saying because he and Danny talk about their driver, Andre, and do a Project Runway Santino impersonation, asking, “Where’s Andre?” I love, love, love them. Guido leave. Bill says moods have shifted as the race gets smaller. They’ve learned they can’t trust anyone. Eric & Danielle leave and let us know the teams get $124 for this leg. Danielle interviews that they’re forming opinions about each other. She’s laidback and just lets Eric take charge. There’s some discussion in their cab about the Tasmanian devil. Apparently people in this season don’t have a lot of knowledge of geography. Uchenna & Joyce leave just an hour and a half after Charm. Joyce explains the marked for elimination thing. Uchenna knows that no one will lose sleep if they’re gone, so they have rely on themselves. Charm get to airport and only find one office open. The first flight to Tanzania leaves at 8:30 a.m., and the office for it doesn’t even open until 5:30. Both speak English with fake accents, so it’s definitely not just a Mirna thing. Mirna tries to use the phone and Charla asks a ticket agent, “Why not possible?” The agent just laughs at them. Finally, Charm decide to head back to the hotel until the counter opens. Dustin & Kandice arrive at the airport and talk to the same agent, who is probably happy that they’re speaking in full sentences. They head off to find a place to hang out for seven hours. Teri & Ian are told the same news about the flight out, and Ian decides that they should camp out in front of the ticket counter so they don’t have to worry about traffic getting back to the airport in the morning. Guido decide to do the same. Teri, however, doesn’t like the idea of spending the night in the airport, but Ian calmly presents their options, telling her he wants to stay so they’ll be first in line in the morning. Teri says they’ll still be first at 2 a.m. She can’t believe they’re staying. She interviews that Ian has a strong personality and is opinionated. Everything’s black and white with him. Ian wants to explain once again why he wants to stay. He reminds Teri of their race mantra, “stop, look, and listen.” Teri asks why they have to stop, look, and listen in an airport. In the morning, guess which team is first in line? Yep, Teri & Ian. Teri says she wants to go to Miami. Charla interviews that she keeps saying she wants to go home. Ian & Teri ask about tickets, but the flight to Tanzania is full. They ask about standby while Charm ask for other options. There’s a flight that connects in Johannesburg, but the connecting flight is full. Charm want to give it a try because the airport in Johannesburg is bigger and could provide them a connection in Johannesburg. Mirna says when they get there, they’ll figure out how to get to Dar es Salaam. Bill thinks it’s risky because the connection is sold out and Charm could get stuck in Johannesburg. The other six teams are still in Maputo, stuck without flights. They’re told to try South African Airlines, which doesn’t open for over an hour. Teri isn’t happy, and neither are Guido, but for a different reason - this makes Charm look smart for getting out of Maputo. In Johannesburg, Charm find a guy who waits with them to see if they can get on a flight. Mirna wants to hold hands and pray. Charla interviews that they’re religious, but that was awkward. Mirna thinks the guy enjoyed it. He got to be on TV, so yeah, probably. They get tickets. I hate when annoying people get good breaks. The other teams are still waiting in Maputo. Dustin & Kandice, Cha3, Eric & Danielle, and Uchenna & Joyce head upstairs to try another office, but Guido and Teri & Ian decide to stay in their line. Upstairs, someone says he’ll find someone to help the teams. Downstairs, T&I and Guido keep waiting in line. Upstairs, the teams hear about a flight to Johannesburg and get on a waiting list. In Johannesburg, Charm get on their connecting flight. Back in Maputo, Teri & Ian and Guido hear that the connecting flight to Tanzania is full, so they get on standby. All of the six teams get on a flight to Johannesburg without connections to Tanzania. In Johannesburg, the teams run through the airport to get to Air Tanzania. They’re told they’ll be checked in immediately. However, only four teams get tickets – Cha3, Uchenna & Joyce, Dustin & Kandice, and Eric & Danielle. Teri & Ian and Guido, AKA the downstairs folks, are stuck – the flight is full. As Danielle & Eric board their flight, Eric rouses the Foreshadowing Fairy by saying that he keeps waiting for someone to tell them not to board. The ticket agent helping Guido and Teri & Ian asks where Eric & Danielle are. He then heads onto the plane and tells Danielle & Eric that there was a mistake – they’ve been given someone else’s seats and will have to get off the plane. Danielle can’t believe this. Eric offers $50 for someone else to get off. No one takes him up on the offer, so he and Danielle leave. Once they’re off the plane, Danielle cries and complains. I have to say, I don’t blame her – they were that close to a lead over two teams, and they lost it. Eric tries to calm Danielle, who starts Flo-ing that she doesn’t want to do this anymore. After she shuts up, they learn that there’s a flight out at 9:55 in the morning. They’re on priority standby. Eric says that’s fine. Elsewhere, Guido and Teri & Ian are told about the same flight. Teri isn’t happy to have to sleep in the airport again. In Dar es Salaam, Charm head to the ferry terminal. At the Johannesburg Airport, Eric wants to look for other teams to make sure they’re still there. They run into Guido, who are happy Danielle & Eric didn’t get on the flight. Eric notes that they just went from the top four to the bottom three. Guido say it’s a threeway tie for last place. Charm get to the ferry terminal and pull a number for the first dhow. However, it won’t leave until 5:30 in the morning because there’s a storm a’coming. Charm wonder where everyone else is. That evening, Kandice & Dustin, Cha3, and Joyce & Uchenna land in Tanzania and head to the ferry terminal. Cha3 seem to chuckle over the term “ferry area.” At the terminal, they search for the numbers, and Cha3 get on the first dhow. Dustin & Kandice and a lagging Uchenna & Joyce won’t get to go until 8:30 a.m. At 4:30 a.m., Cha3 are awake and flirting. Charm catch up to them and Oswald says they work that corner, so Charm need to find their own bench. Mirna doesn’t seem to get the joke. At 5:30, the two teams head off in the dhow. “We’re going to trade you for food now,” says Oswald. “Can I have some of the food?” Mirna asks. Mirna needs a little more work in the humor department. Eric & Danielle and Teri & Ian hang out in the airport, wondering where to form a line. Eric says he and Danielle were in line first. Is this kindergarten? Second dhow leaves with Dustin & Kandice and Uchenna & Joyce leaves. Uchenna notes that this was a major travel route for slaves, and a lot of people saw home for the last time on this pathway. “Now it’s your turn,” he tells Dustin & Kandice. If they’re slaves to anything, it’s fashion. Eric & Danielle, Guido, and Teri & Ian are told there’s only room for two people on standby. The lucky team is Eric & Danielle. Teri can’t believe they’re stuck again. “Just get me out of here,” she says. Danielle & Eric head off and Guido and Ian & Teri are out of luck once again. Ian tries to find another flight and hears about one through Malawi. Cha3 sleep on the dhow as Charla pukes over the side. Mirna looks fine and is waving a little race flag. Oswald tends to Charla, cooling her off. Mirna says he knows a lot of beauty tips. Oswald points out that it’s more like first aid. Mirna interviews that she and Charla are together all the time and it’s nice to have other companions for once. Guido are happy to be leaving Johannesburg. They’re on the same flight as Ian & Teri. Meanwhile, Charm and Cha3 arrive in Zanzibar. Charla gives us some insight into their thinking - they always want to think they’re last because it makes them work harder. Makes sense to me. They find a kiosk and get a clue, which is a Detour. The choices are Solve It or Schlep It. In Solve It, teams go to a hotel and put together a 62-piece puzzle in the style of local artwork. In Schlep, teams go to a lumberyard and load two 50-pound logs used to make dhows onto a handcart. Then they have to deliver the logs to a shipyard to get their next clue. Charm and Cha3 both pick Solve It. Charm find the hotel easily but are intimidated by the puzzle. Cha3 arrive soon after and the two teams get to work. Cha3 take to the puzzle easily but Charm have more trouble getting the hang of it. Kandice & Dustin and Uchenna & Joyce ride on their dhow. Uchenna talks about pirates and Kandice asks Joyce where she found him. At the hotel, Cha3 and Charm are still puzzling. Mirna says she and Charla are both competitive and driven. They’re trying to come in first again. However, Cha3 are faster and finish first. Their next clue sends them to Kikungwi, where some Masai tribe members live. They grab a taxi, first making sure it’s air-conditioned. Charm finish and head off as well. On the way to Kikungwi, Cha3 decide to stop to buy some fruit. Danny suggests corn as well but Oswald vetoes it. Charm want their driver to go faster, but Cha3 are just making sure they’re not dehydrated. This allows Charm to get to the clue box first, and it’s a Roadblock. One person must learn how to hunt with a traditional wooden weapon. Phil gives his an eyebrow pop. They have to throw the weapon 65 feet and destroy a clay target. Mirna takes the Roadblock and gets someone to demonstrate for her. She says it’s harder than it looks. Charla throws her a water bottle and Mirna says maybe she should have done this Roadblock. Not long after, Cha3 arrive and Danny takes the Roadblock. Charla asks Oswald where they’ve been. Danny starts throwing and Oswald gives him some tips, like using a limp wrist. No comment. Mirna breaks her target and turns cartwheels. When she’s not being shrill and speaking with weird accents, she’s kind of cute. Charm scream and head off to the Pit Stop, the Old Fort. Their driver knows where it is. Mirna doesn’t want to celebrate too soon, though, because Cha3 could finish quickly. Oswald notes that Mirna must have been praying to “her grandmother, her grandfather, and her eternal lineage.” Danny quickly breaks his target and Cha3 head off, knowing Charm are good competitors. They know better than to stop for fruit this time. In their cab, Charla says they’re “looking for Philly.” Mirna tells her it’s “Mr. Phil to you.” They arrive at the fort but can’t find the right spot. Cha3 hope for divine intervention. They arrive and start looking as well. They have smartly dropped their bags, but even with their luggage, Charm reach the mat first for the second week in a row. What the heck? That’s not supposed to happen! They’ve also won catamarans. They don’t know what those are. Cha3 arrive shortly after them and are happy to be second. The second dhow docks and Kandice & Dustin and Uchenna & Joyce get their Detour clues. Joyce & Uchenna go for Solve It, but Dustin & Kandice think Schlep It will be faster because they only have to carry two logs. Who would suspect the beauty queens would want to lug logs? Eric & Danielle land and are happy to have a lead on Guido and Teri & Ian. Uchenna & Joyce start their puzzle and Joyce is happy they’re not doing something physical. Kandice & Dustin start loading logs and find someone to lead them to their delivery destination. Danielle & Eric get a ticket for the third dhow. Dustin & Kandice push their cart, saying they feel like they’re bobsledding in the desert. They think they made a good choice. Eric & Danielle hope their dhow leaves before Guido and Ian & Teri arrive. They’re still in the air, so there’s a good chance of that. Bill says they’re not out until Phil says so. Ian thinks they’re running a good race. Dustin & Kandice accidentally topple their cart. Meanwhile, Uchenna & Joyce finish their puzzle and head off. Kandice & Dustin right their cart and figure out how to push it without upsetting it. They arrive at the shipyard and coo over a cat sleeping in a dhow. They unload the logs and get their clue. In the cab, they still think they’ve made the right choice. Unlike last week, where Pamper was obviously the better choice than Porter, this week it looks like the two Detour options weren’t too different timewise. Who knows - they could have completely choked on the puzzle. Eric & Danielle ride their dhow. Eric says there are so many what-ifs on the race. You could think a team is out and they’ll show up, so you can’t get too comfy. Meanwhile, Teri & Ian and Guido land and grab cabs to the ferry terminal. Ian says that between the two lagging teams, the winner takes all and the loser goes home. Joe doesn’t want to be eliminated, but Ian notes this will be the end for one of the teams. Ian & Teri and Guido arrive at the ferry terminal and are told their dhow leaves around 8 p.m. Uchenna & Joyce get to the Roadblock, which Uchenna takes. He starts throwing and notes that this could take a while. Dustin & Kandice are wondering where Uchenna & Joyce are. Uchenna finishes and gets to jump up and down with the Masai before he and Joyce head to the Pit Stop. So the previews for this week that indicated that he would have trouble with the Roadblock were complete BS. Wonderful! Thanks, preview editors. Kandice & Dustin reach the Roadblock, which Dustin takes. Eric & Danielle get their Detour clue and decide to do Solve It. Joyce & Uchenna arrive at the mat in third place and their 30 minutes begins. I’m guessing they won’t have any trouble here. Indeed, though Dustin finishes the Roadblock and Eric & Danielle finish their puzzle, the 30 minutes elapse before anyone else arrives, so Uchenna & Joyce remain in third place. Nice turnaround for them. Guido and Teri & Ian get in their dhow as Dustin & Kandice reach the mat in fourth place. Eric & Danielle get to the Roadblock, which Danielle takes. Eric is not very encouraging. Danielle’s weapon hits the pole holding the target, making it fall and break, so she technically finishes. Teri & Ian and Guido ride their dhow. Teri says Guido are a great team, but they don’t want to leave. Eric & Danielle arrive at the mat in the dark and are happy to be in fifth place and not out of the race. Teri & Ian and Guido get their Detour clues. Ian & Teri announce that they’re doing Solve It, and Guido decide to stay close to them and do the same Detour. Plus, it’s probably not a good idea to try to load and deliver logs in the dark. The teams are obviously tired as they do the puzzles, and they’re fairly quiet. The main problem with the puzzle is that the pieces, fish, are painted on both sides, but only one side fits. Guido finish first and leave Teri & Ian behind. Bill says they feel like they’re doing well, but they’re not sure what will be next. Joe notes that they could easily lose. Teri & Ian finish up and try to play catch-up. It’s the next morning when Guido arrive at the Roadblock, which Bill takes. Teri hopes someone gets stuck there. Ian notes that the only team that could get stuck is Guido. Bill finishes and he and Joe leave for the Pit Stop before Ian & Teri even show up. Ian takes the Roadblock as Guido navigate traffic. Ian breaks his target and he and Teri hurry off. Guido get stuck in traffic and aren’t sure their driver knows where he’s going. The two teams race to the Pit Stop, and the first team to find the mat is Guido. They’re very relieved to be in sixth place. T&I do their “we’re coming, Phil” thing but hit the mat in last place. They’re out of the race. Ian says they figured. Teri says they had fun and are sorry to go. Ian notes that they’re going home to their family and will continue their great life. They talk about how much they love each other. I’m actually kind of sorry to see them go. (I know! I’m shocked, too!) They were much calmer this time around, and it’s easier to see this time that they do care about each other. I’m glad we got to see them again on the race and know that they don’t just fight all the time. Next week: a two-hour episode, so I’m guessing it’s either a non-elimination leg followed by an elimination or a two-part leg. Danielle gets impatient. Charla wears armor and faces off with a horse.
