Episode 5 – Broadway Baby!
Grease: You're the One that I Want!, Episode 5 – Broadway Baby! by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 02/12/2007 You’re the One that I Want! is back, and so are our Danny and Sandy wannabes. Tonight, one Danny and one Sandy each get the boot, but not before there is a little twist. The rest sing songs from musicals, especially featuring guest judge Andrew Lloyd Webber. Can Derek keep the compliments coming, or will he slide backwards instead? Read on to find out! After a short hiatus for the Super Bowl, our Sandys and Dannys are back to fight for their Broadway lives! Billy Bush and Denise Van Outen greet us and Billy promises that a Danny and a Sandy will be eliminated... and it's going to be brutal! With that cheerful reminder of misery, we're off to the first group number. The Sandys and Dannys perform to “Summer Nights.” They grab the microphone from each other and take turns doing solos while they dance. They seem to have a lot of fun performing it. After the number, Denise tells us that in “an amazing twist,” the two least-favorite Dannys and Sandys will have to sing to avoid elimination. Apparently, one of the bottom two of each pair will be eliminated. Presumably, that means the judges will make the final call. Hmmm... After this little surprise, Billy introduces us to the panel. David Ian, the show's producer; director Kathleen Marshall; and author Jim Jacobs. Our special guest panelist is Oscar and Tony award winner Andrew Lloyd Webber. The cast and audience look thrilled to see this Broadway legend in person. Hopefully, he'll be a more insightful judge than Olivia Newton John was last time. We get a montage of Dannys and Sandys talking about how hard the show is and why they should win the respective role. No one says anything shocking here. It's now time to find out which of the Dannys and Sandys have gotten the lowest number of votes. After the last show, I ranked the Dannys and Sandys as follows: Dannys: Chad Derek Austin Max Kevin Jason Matt Sandys: Ashley S. Laura Kate Kathleen Allie Juliana Ashley A. Now, here's the result of the audience vote. Billy calls forward Kevin, Derek, Chad, and Austin and tells them they're all safe! Jason, Matt, and Max are left on stage. One of them is safe, the other two are not. I hope Max is the safe one... and he is! So, it looks like I got the bottom two Dannys right this week. Denise now turns to the Sandys. She calls forward Ashley A(!), Ashley S., Laura, and Kathleen. Ah! One of them is in the bottom two and it's Ashley A. (Phew!) The other three are safe. Allie, Juliana, and Kate remain. Allie joins Ashley A. in the bottom two. So I was slightly off there. The sing-off will happen later. First, Denise tells us the Dannys and Sandys will be singing songs from Broadway musicals this week – many written by our guest judge, Andrew Lloyd Webber. “Slacker Danny” Max is going first for the guys. This past week he has spruced up and cut his hair to change his image. While “Small Town Sandy” Laura will be the first woman singing. (WHAT is with the nicknames?!) “Slacker Danny” Max, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”: Max's new haircut looks good, and he generally performs well. However, he seems to strain on a few of the notes. I also don’t get much of a Danny vibe from the song, and since that's the main criticism against Max, I don't know if this was the right song to pick. “Small Town Sandy” Laura, “Jesus Christ Superstar”: Laura emotes through the song. It's another interesting song choice – not very Sandy and not traditionally sung by a woman. However, she sings the whole thing with passion and conviction and really sells it. Good job. Andrew Lloyd Webber says that Max got the wonder in the song, but he really liked Laura's performance. He notes it's a male song and he really loved what she did with it. Jim approves of Max's haircut and he loves his storytelling skills. He thinks Laura was fantastic. Kathleen continues the love parade for these two, noting Laura blew her away. She does say Max needs to show them the Danny swagger soon, though. David says that they asked Max to change, and he's doing it! He says Laura hadn't made much of an impression on him so far, but she blew his socks off tonight. “Wholesome Danny” Derek, “Footloose”: This is a great choice for a Danny. I can buy Danny singing “Footloose.” Derek actually gets four back-up dancers for this routine. His cut-off shirt also emphasizes his biceps, but I'm sure that was an accident. Derek sings the song well and he handles singing while dancing well too. I have to say I sure buy him as Danny more than I buy Max after seeing both numbers. “Ballerina Sandy” Ashley S., “Take That Look Off Your Face”: This is a relatively unknown number from a lesser Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Ashley shows good vocal range in the number and has no problem emoting while singing. Her vocal performance maintains her front-runner status. The ladies are stepping it up so far tonight! Kathleen says both of them were terrific and that she'd be happy to have them both in the show. Andrew Lloyd Webber notes that Derek sang and danced live brilliantly and that Ashley really played into the confrontation with another woman. Jim says that they've both been favorites of his since day one and neither one has disappointed him. David thinks Derek could definitely be a leading man, while Ashley also performed well, although David would have liked to see even more anger from her in the song. Wow! Quite the love-fest from the judges. Will they ever say anything negative? “Bellhop Danny” Kevin, “Burning Love”: Kevin also gets a couple of back-up dancers as he sings this Elvis tune. He rocks it out as he sings. Kevin has a nice voice and he's not a bad dancer. However, for some reason I still have some problem seeing him as Danny... even while singing Elvis. I don't think that can be a good thing. “Rock Chick Sandy” Juliana, “Don't Cry For Me Argentina”: As Andrew Lloyd Webber pointed out in rehearsal, this song is about a woman seducing a country. Juliana has a very pretty voice, but I don't think she had the proper emotional depth for the song. David says he has the same concerns as last week. He thinks Kevin didn't embrace the strong leader that Danny should be. Juliana looks fabulous, but is lacking an emotional connection to the material. Andrew Lloyd Webber says that Kevin didn't really get character into his performance and he needs to do that. He thinks Juliana sang it as he requested and that, even though she had a few off notes, he thinks she did it well. Kathleen notes that Danny has to love to be the center of attention and he has to find the “showoff” in himself. As for Juliana, she thought the song was pretty, but she wants to see Juliana's wild side. Jim says that both of the songs were difficult. He's seen Kevin be better other times and he thinks the same of Juliana. Andrew Lloyd Webber now tells us that he and David Ian did a show in England where they found the lead for a new production of The Sound of Music. He says it worked well there, and thinks it should work with this show too. He does ask David why they didn't call their show, “You're the Nun that I Want.” Snork. He does wish that there was more diversity in the performances thus far, though. We get to see Andrew Lloyd Webber rehearsing the Dannys and Sandys in a number from The Phantom of the Opera. Then we get to see their performance. Once again, they do a nice job with the group number. Austin and Kevin stand out for me in their solos, but even Ashley A. doesn't mess up in hers. “Ambitious Danny” Chad, “My Eyes Adored You”: Chad's a handsome guy and he has no problem playing to the camera. He does an admirable job singing about a childhood crush and making it seem sweet, yet still masculine. His energy seems a bit low, but he's apparently battling the flu. “Serious Sandy” Kate, “Buenos Aires”: Kate's got a great voice, but I didn't see the awe and excitement of the song really shining out of her in this number. I'm just not sure she comes across as Sandy. But she sure can sing. Andrew Lloyd Webber notes that Chad has the flu and that he has a wonderful quality to his singing – however he also knows he can sing the number even better than he did. He really liked Kate's version of “Buenos Aires.” Denise asks Jim if these two are still his favorites this week. Jim says that he thinks Chad was a bit better in rehearsals, but that Kate did well. Kathleen says that Chad looks fantastic in a close-up, but that he needs to make sure the emotion projects to the back of the house. She loved Kate. David says that Chad is their best romantic lead and that Kate's last four notes were fantastic. “Hot Danny” Austin, “Ease on Down the Road”: Austin really moves a lot during this performance. That can't be easy while singing! He also dances with several back-up dancers. And when I say dancing, they are moving! Wow! He manages to sound entirely professional through the whole thing and his song and dance looked much more difficult than what the other guys have done this week. Great job! “Spiritual Sandy” Kathleen, “Memory”: I wonder why only the Sandys are singing Andrew Lloyd Webber songs? Kathleen wears another oddly unflattering out fit this week. For some reason, every time she does her song for the week she wears something that makes me think she's pregnant! She sounds pretty good singing this Cats classic, but I don't feel the proper sense of melancholy or despair that this song needs. Andrew Lloyd Webber says that Kathleen did a good job with the money notes although she was tentative in a few places. Kathleen says that Austin pulled off an incredibly difficult performance really well and Kathleen believed the emotion of Kathleen's song. Jim says Austin pulled it off and that Kathleen did well too. David says Austin's performance was the best Danny of the night so far. He thinks Kathleen is special, but he wants to see the youthful Sandy next week. Now it's time for our surprise bottom two sing-off for the Dannys and the Sandys. We get to see the reactions of the Sandys and Dannys to being in the bottom. Allie clearly takes it the hardest, crying as she talks about how much she wants the part. Ashley A. clearly (and rightfully) expected it. All four singers will be performing “Tears on my Pillow” from Grease. They each take turns singing parts of the song. Of the two guys, I think Matt still comes across as the weakest. It seems a lot closer between Ashley and Allie than I expected, with Ashley holding her nerves in check and singing much, much better than last week. Of course, she could hardly do worse! Still, I think the panel won't want to risk their show on someone who has so many problems with her nerves, no matter how perfect her image is for Sandy. David says that Broadway is no place for beginners and the panel is saving Jason. They choose to save Allie since they have no idea why she was in the bottom two to begin with. Thus the “second-chancers” Matt and Ashley A. are going home again. Ashley and Matt seem to take it well. Matt says he thinks he did well for his first audition ever. I have to agree with that! But the judges made the right choice. Now, Jason and Allie get to perform their regular songs to try to win audience votes. “Boy Band Danny” Jason, “That'll Be the Day”: He moves very well in the performance, dancing through the song. He really seems to put his all into it. He definitely does a better job than last week, fighting to stay in the competition, however I think he's going to find himself in the bottom two once again. David says that Jason needs to get better to stay out of the bottom. Jim says that it was a courageous effort, but he thought it was “fine.” Kathleen says he's a very skilled performer, but it sometimes seems to slick and artificial. Andrew Lloyd Webber says that Jason was shaky in rehearsals and that he has improved a lot since then. “Baby Sandy” Allie, “I Don't Know How to Love Him”: This is a deeply passionate, frustrated, confused, vulnerable song in which Mary Magdeline struggles to understand her feelings for Jesus. Allie's voice sounds beautiful, but I just don't see those kind of emotions from her in this song. At all. I wonder if she just doesn't have the life experience to sing this? Kathleen picked Allie as her favorite last week. She thinks she did a lovely job, but she needs to open up and express the emotion they saw from her backstage. David agrees, as does Jim. Andrew Lloyd Webber says that she's young, but she has great acting potential. However, she needs to draw on all of the expert help she can in the competition. This week, David says that Austin and Laura were the best. Kathleen says she thought it was Kathleen and Derek. Jim voted for Max and Laura. Andrew Lloyd Webber picks Derek and Laura. The cast then does one more performance to “Sandy” and “Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee” the reprise with Matt and Ashley A. singing the lead parts. Matt looks sad as he ends his song. Ashley weeps as she sings. It's got to be hard for these kids! Aw! They both look crushed. Here's how I see the Dannys and Sandys this week. Dannys: Austin Derek Chad Kevin Max Jason Sandys: Laura Ashley S. Kathleen Kate Allie Juliana I think it's interesting that the show has added in a “cover-their-butts” judging clause, such that they can save a performer they like from elimination. I assume the final Danny and Sandy will be chosen by strict audience voting, but we'll have to wait and see.

Right off the bat, one Danny and one Sandy had to face the elimination round. For the Dannys, Jason and Matt were in the bottom two. As for the Sandys, Ashley A. and Allie were in the bottom two. The bottom four were not going to be told who was eliminated until after the show. All the performers had to choose songs from Broadway musicals and Max kicked off the singing. He started off with “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from the play, The Lion King. Laura followed Max’s performance with an Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Andrew was impressed with Laura’s performance of his song and told her she would go very far in the competition. Derek got the audience dancing on their feet to the song “Footloose”. His performance was also a way to show off his dancing moves for the judges. Andrew thought that Derek’s performance was brilliant. Ashley S. followed Derek’s performance with “Take that look off your face” from Andrew’s musical, Tell Me on a Sunday. Afterwards, Kathleen told Ashley S. that she was so proud of how emotional her performance was. Kevin sang “Burning Love” for the audience. He channeled his inner Elvis and the crowd loved it. David thought his performance was not believable and wanted him to act more like the leader of the pack. Juliana took on the song, “Don’t cry for me Argentina” from the play Evita. Kathleen wanted Juliana to rip away at her exterior and get more emotional with her song and the other judges seemed to agree. Chad sang “My eyes adored you” from the Broadway play, Jersey Boys. Chad was battling the flu and it was hindering his singing voice. Afterwards, Andrew told Chad he knew to expect better next time. Kate sang the fast paced song, “Buenos Aires” from the play, Evita. After her performance, Jim told her that she continued to knock him out with how wonderful her performances are. Austin sang the song, “Ease on down the road” from the musical, The Wiz. David called Austin’s performance the best Danny of the night. Kathleen was already nervous with her chosen song, “Memory” from the musical Cats. She had already heard it was one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s favorite songs. Kathleen thought the performance was beautiful and told her she felt the emotion. The bottom four had to sing “Tears on my pillow” for the judges in hopes of being able to come back to the competition. In the end, it was Ashley A. and Matt who were left packing their bags and going home. Since Jason made it back to the competition, he was allowed to perform for the audience. He sang the Buddy Holly classic, “That’ll be the day”. David thought the performance was ok, but warned Jason to step it up if he wanted to avoid being in the bottom four the next week. Allie sang “I don’t know how to love him” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Andrew was very impressed with her performance, but thought she should take advantage of all the expert help she could. If she did that, she could go a long way.
