Episode 4 - It’s the End of the World The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 4 - It’s the End of the World
by Jenn Brasler -- 03/12/2006
…And I don’t feel fine, because Charla & Mirna are still in the race. Will they finally be eliminated at Isla Redonda, “the end of the world”? Or will another team be unfortunate enough to lose to them?
Previously on I Was Going to Make a Chile/Chilly Pun But I Couldn’t Think of One That Wasn’t Stupid: Nine teams raced around Chile. Teri & Ian faced off with Charm, with Charm coming out not looking so hot. Danielle hates fish. Charm helped Guido after they failed to read an entire clue, then were upset when Guido sped ahead of them. The teams whitewater rafted, and Romber were first to the mat for the third week in a row while David & Mary were put out of our… I mean their misery. Eight teams remain:
Rob & Amber (Romber) - Married/Three in a row, people! Three in a row!
Uchenna & Joyce - Married/Recovering nicely from the first two legs
Eric & Danielle - Dating/Afraid of fish? Huh?
Kandice & Dustin - Friends/Read, please! It will help you!
Oswald & Danny (Cha3) - Friends/Always lovely, no matter what
Teri & Ian - Married/Did you ever think you’d be on their side over Charm
Bill & Joe (Guido) - Partners/Should probably stay far away from Charm
Charla & Mirna (Charm) - Cousins/Sigh
We are still in Chile. It’s still pretty. Will Romber keep winning, or will another team overtake them? Romber are leaving first at 6:11 a.m. Their clue tells them to drive to Punta Arenas, Chile. Look, I’m sure Chile is nice, but are they going to stay there forever? Rob interviews that he’s not trying to be arrogant or cocky, he just believes in himself and Amber and thinks they’re the strongest team there. Amber says they’re communicating well but wonders if they’re peaking. Rob is sure he’s not even close to that.
Uchenna & Joyce leave. Joyce interviews that Romber beat her and Uchenna a lot in season 7, but not when it counted. Uchenna thinks they do have a little rivalry and Romber probably want to set the record straight. Uchenna welcomes a rematch because it’s healthy competition.
Eric & Danielle. Eric says it’s hard having a girlfriend on the race. He has to separate their relationship from the race. He’s been treating her like a guy but with nicer breasts. Shut up, Eric. And don’t laugh, Danielle - you’re just encouraging him.
Romber arrive at the airport. They get tickets on a 9:40 a.m. flight and are told there aren’t too many seats left. Amber wants to use the Internet to, as we soon learn, research the shipwreck they’ll need to look for in Punta Arenas.
Kandice & Dustin leave. Kandice says they’re inconsistent because they overthink a little. Or you don’t read. Whatever. She continues that they need to prepare beforehand, trust themselves, and let go. Or, you know, read. They hope to get on one of the earlier flights and, of course, beat Romber.
Romber, by the way, are on the Internet, looking for the shipwreck. They keep finding paintings of it and Amber wonders if that’s what they’re supposed to look for.
Cha3 leave. Oswald says people seem to think they’re just fun and not competitive, but that’s not right. Danny adds that they always have their sense of style. They talk about snoring and Oswald says Kandice snores a lot.
Teri & Ian are off next. Ian says they’re older and maybe not as physically fit as the other teams. Thanks for enlightening us, Ian.
Guido head off next. Joe says being at the bottom of the pack is eye-opening and makes them more competitive.
Uchenna & Joyce and Eric & Danielle get tickets to the same flight as Romber just an hour before it leaves. The next flight won’t leave until 11:15 a.m.
Charm leave last. Mirna says she works hard to do well; she does the navigating and booking. They head to a travel agency, I think, to get information, but their purse is in the car, so they don’t have their passports. Mirna blames Charla and says she has to overcompensate for Charla’s shortcomings. Shut up, Mirna.
Kandice & Dustin and Cha3 get on the first flight. Oswald talks to a ticket agent in Spanish and Dustin jokes to him that he told the guy not to let her and Kandice on the plane. Teri & Ian arrive and are told the first flight has closed. Cha3 and Joyce wonder where Romber are; they think they’re probably having breakfast and will creep up eventually. Romber are still on Internet, where they learn that the shipwreck isn’t just a painting.
Teri & Ian are trying to get on the first flight. Charm learn about the first flight but don’t think they’ll be able to get to the airport on time to get on it. As the flight boards, Teri & Ian wait to hear whether they can get on… and they can. They’re extremely relieved to be ahead of at least a couple of the teams.
Guido get to the airport as the flight is boarding and ask to get on. They’re told they can’t because it’s closed, and no amount of begging changes anyone’s mind. The first flight leaves as Charm arrive at the airport. Joe says they always get nervous that they’ll be in last place. They decide to ask around to see if anyone in the airport knows about the shipwreck.
As Charm get tickets for the 11:15 flight, Guido find someone who can help them find the shipwreck. Bill notes that Charm are good about talking to people, so he and Joe need to make it more difficult for them by preoccupying their helper and pretending they don’t know anything about the shipwreck. Charm join up with them and Guido just make chitchat. Mirna says Guido ditched them and so she and Charla can’t trust them. Guido and Charm’s flight departs.
In Punta Arenas, the first flight lands and Romber are the first to grab a taxi. Rob thinks Uchenna & Joyce have no idea where they’re going. Good thing they have a driver to take them, genius. Rob lets us know that on the plane, he intercepted directions a flight attendant was supposed to give Uchenna. Uchenna doesn’t look too mad, but I’m sure he’s not happy.
Romber are the first to the clue, a Detour. The two choices are Navigate It and Sign It. In Navigate It, teams use a map to get to the town plaza and get a compass from a sailor. They then head south to the Nautilus building and get their next clue from the proprietor. In Sign It, teams go to a building, use a map of Magellan’s voyages, and build a signpost listing his 14 ports of call. The signs don’t have to point in the right direction but the ports must be spelled correctly.
Amber suggests doing Navigate It, but Rob thinks Sign It will be better… because he knows how to build stuff. Maybe he needs to read the clue again. As other teams arrive, Eric & Danielle, Guido, and Teri & Ian pick Navigate It while Uchenna & Joyce and Dustin & Kandice go for Sign It. The Sign It teams get to work, but the other teams have to figure out where they’re going first.
Romber pick Seville as their starting point while Uchenna & Joyce pick Guam. Eric & Danielle, Guido, and Teri & Ian get to work with the compasses. Rob misspells “Philippines,” which I always misspell, too. Teri & Ian are going the wrong way. Eric & Danielle finish up their task quickly and are sent to the airport to get one of two charter flights to Playa Larga in Ushuaia, Argentina. Yay, a new country! Guido are right behind them. Danielle says they’re going to Australia. Not quite. Eric jokes about stopping and gassing the charter plane 8,000 times to get there.
Romber think they’re done, but they’ve screwed up. Rob hopes it’s not because of a misspelling. Yep, sorry. Uchenna & Joyce have the wrong starting point. Teri & Ian find the Nautilus building and head to the airport. Kandice & Dustin are still not adept at reading, since they think the arrows have to point in certain ways. Uchenna & Joyce still don’t have their sign right.
Cha3 get to the airport first and are on the first charter flight. They do a happy dance. Eric & Danielle are second and wonder where Romber are.
Amber suggests switching Detours because two teams still aren’t there, but Rob doesn’t want to switch. Amber says they need to know when to quit. A camera lets us know that “Philippines” is misspelled.
Teri & Ian are third on the first charter flight. One of the other teams drops a hat on Ian from a balcony above. Heh. He says they should party since they have a long layover.
Charm and Guido land and head to the Detour after being spotted by Teri & Ian, Cha3, and Eric & Danielle. At Sign It, Uchenna & Joyce finally figure out their mistake and speed ahead of Romber. “I don’t get it,” Rob says. In the cab, Uchenna is thrilled that Joyce figured out their mistake.
Guido and Charm race cabs. Uchenna & Joyce reach the airport but are disappointed to see that the first charter flight is full. Uchenna is upset that they obviously picked the longer Detour.
At Sign It, Kandice & Dustin suggest to Romber that they switch tasks. After Rob gives it another shot, he agrees a the teams both go to Navigate It. Charm see that no one is doing Sign It and decide to try it while Guido head off to Navigate It.
Kandice & Dustin and Romber get to Navigate It and decide to work together. Charm struggle with their Sign It supplies while Mirna yells. She really fell out of the unpleasant tree and hit all the branches on the way down, didn’t she? Dustin & Kandice and Romber spot Guido and realize the second flight has caught up. “What the heck are they doing here?” Bill wonders as Guido pass the other teams. Rob has the address for the Naval Museum and says he knows where they’re going.
Mirna keeps yelling, telling Charla not to carry so many pieces of wood; she’ll get them later. This is why she has a martyr complex - she puts it on herself. There’s more yelling and Mirna wondering why Charla can’t go faster. Yeah, why can’t your legs grow a few inches right this second, Charla? What’s your problem?
Guido find the Nautilus building and are happy they got a break. Meanwhile, Kandice & Dustin and Romber are at the wrong place, but they do get directions to the Nautilus building. Charm’s first attempt at Sign It is wrong and they decide to switch tasks.
Guido get to the airport and sign up for the second charter flight. Charm do Navigate It as Kandice & Dustin and Romber finally get to the right spot. In a cab, Kandice notes that teaming up with them wasn’t necessarily helpful. Really? Rob says that this is the first time he and Amber aren’t ahead. Charm do the Joey-from-Friends-get-inside-the-map thing. Heh. Romber get to the airport and get on the second charter flight.
Mirna resurrects the whistle from season 5 to get a cab. Kandice & Dustin are on the second flight. Amber tries to comfort Rob, who doesn’t appreciate it, so she says she won’t do that again for the rest of the race. She tells the camera she’s mad he’s lying and won’t admit he wants to be first. He finally admits it. Charm are last on the second flight.
The first flight leaves at 8 a.m. Teri & Ian are first to grab a cab when they land, and Cha3 are right behind them. Teri & Ian can’t find the clue box when they arrive at the next destination, which gives us our first Ian yelling moment. Cha3 and Eric & Danielle are on the right trail and get to the clue, which sends them to a dock where they’ll grab numbers to get on a boat that leaves every 20 minutes and can carry two teams at most to Isla Redonda, known as “the end of the world.” There, they’ll find a post office to get their next clue.
The second flight leaves and Rob is not happy. Elsewhere, Teri & Ian finally find the clue. Cha3 and Eric & Danielle get to the dock and get on the first boat. Ian & Teri are there next but have to wait 20 minutes. Cha3 and Danielle & Eric get to next clue box, which gives them a Roadblock. One team member must work as a postal worker, sorting mail. “Sorting” turns out to really mean “looking for one of two letters written to the team by a team from their original season.” Yay! The racer who does the task must read the letter out loud to his or her teammate to get the next clue. Hee, reading is part of the task. Eric and Oswald take the Roadblock.
Teri & Ian’s 20 minutes are over and they head to the post office alone. Kandice & Dustin are on their way, followed by Guido and Uchenna & Joyce. This leaves Romber and Charm waiting for cabs. Romber grab one first and Charm try to get it instead, Charla saying she called for one. Rob says they called, too, and Romber head off in cab. Another arrives and Charla complains that Romber took their cab.
Oswald finds a letter, and it’s from Blake & Paige. Cha3 say it’s sweet. Blake & Paige tell them to think of beach chairs and piña coladas waiting for them at home. Cha3 can now head to the Pit Stop at the end of the continent. Not long after, Eric finds a letter from Jeremy and Dani, who say they’re jealous that Eric & Danielle went on the race without them because Dani and Jeremy are cooler. “No babies on the race,” they add. Hee.
Teri & Ian arrive and Teri takes the Roadblock. Kandice & Dustin, Guido, and Uchenna & Joyce arrive at the docks in quick succession. Rob notes that he and Amber could either be last or second to last. Amber tells him they don’t always have to be first. I think she just blew his mind. Ian encourages Teri by telling her there’s no one else at the post office yet, so she can just take her time.
Cha3 and Eric & Danielle race to the mat, with Cha3 arriving first. Nice! Oswald says they came to the end of the world for Phil, so he should say something nice. Phil toys with them, pausing before telling them they’re first. They’ve won a trip to Maui. Also nice! They ask for Phil to come with them. “That’s a whole different reality show,” says Phil. Hee. As Teri keeps searching, Eric & Danielle hit the mat in second place.
Romber and Charm drive to the dock. When they arrive, Romber miss the flag and head off in the wrong direction. Charm decide to follow them. Smart. After all, they’ve been having a great day. Romber head back in the other direction, pretending that an old clue they’re holding is the new one. Charm catch on quickly and Mirna says that as a lawyer, she can tell when someone’s lying. Romber do manage to find the clue and head to the dock. Rob notes that they have their cut out for them and we shouldn’t count them out. Charm find the clue and Mirna complains about Amber.
Teri finds her and Ian’s letter, which is from Flo & Zach. They congratulate Ian & Teri for making it so far. Guido, Dustin & Kandice, and Uchenna & Joyce arrive at the dock, but Joyce & Uchenna take a little too long and wind up having to wait 20 minutes.
Ian & Teri get to the mat in third place and Phil says they should hug. They do, adding in a kiss. Romber are seventh to the boats and tell Guido, Dustin & Kandice, and Uchenna & Joyce about misleading Charm. Joyce thinks this is hilarious.
Dustin & Kandice and Guido take their boat to the post office. Rob notes that they’re going to be on a boat with Uchenna & Joyce. Charm arrive and Charla asks Amber why she lied. Amber plays innocent, saying that she wasn’t talking to Charm, she was talking to Rob. Rob asks if Charm thought they had the clue, pretending it was all just a misunderstanding. There’s a lot of fake laughter. Rob thinks he’s rubbing off on Amber. Run, Amber! Run! Charla says it doesn’t make sense. It was a lie, and now she and Mirna are in last place. Sucks to be you. Maybe you shouldn’t listen to people who are competing against you, huh?
As Charm are left all alone on the dock, Mirna complains that they’re at a big disadvantage. On their boat, Dustin & Kandice and Guido laugh about Charm. Bill and Kandice take the Roadblock and Joe warns Bill not to get a paper cut or ruin his manicure. Kandice says she wishes she had a manicure and Joe says she can borrow his nail buffer later.
Uchenna & Joyce and Romber take their boat over. Uchenna says this is a competition and he does want to beat Romber. At the Roadblock, Bill finds a letter from Frank (of Frank & Margarita); it’s like a rap, and Frank says he hopes it annoyed Guido as much as they annoyed him. Hee.
Kandice & Dustin hope their letter is from Dublyn. Ha! In fact, it turns out to be from Lyn and only Lyn. Dustin says that Karlyn was definitely not the warmer of the two. We get a clip of the two teams fighting in an airport. Lyn writes to Dustin & Kandice that they didn’t form a lifelong friendship, but they did make lifelong memories. Kandice & Dustin do seem to think it’s sweet.
Charm boat over as Romber and Uchenna & Joyce reach the Roadblock, which Rob and Joyce take. Amber tells Uchenna that since she did the first two Roadblocks, she thinks Rob has been itching to do one. In the meantime, Guido reach the mat in fourth. Phil wonders if they could be any more in love. Probably not. Dustin & Kandice check in fifth.
Charm arrive at the Roadblock, much to Amber and Uchenna’s dismay. Mirna takes the task, probably much to Joyce and Rob’s dismay. There’s a montage of searching and letters falling. Joyce finds her and Uchenna’s letter, which is from Susan & Patrick; apparently the two teams are friends. “Don’t trust you know who,” Susan & Patrick write. Nice.
Charla tries to help Mirna, who takes the opportunity to slam Rob for being a liar. Did she think he would be any different than how he was in his original season? Whatever. Uchenna & Joyce are sixth to the Pit Stop.
More searching. Charm find their letter first, it’s from Lance & Marshall. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! That’s great. For those who didn’t see season 5, Marshall & Lance HATED Mirna, and they were the first team, I believe, to call them “Mirna & Schmirna.” Actually, everyone hated Charm. I kind of wish Colin & Christie had written the letter. Anyway, Lance & Marshall write that Charm say they can speak five languages but can actually barely speak English. Ouch!
Rob apologizes to Amber since he can’t find their letter. Amber tells him it’s not his fault. She notes that if it comes down to a foot race, they can beat Charm. Charm, by the way, are running and calling Amber a lying bi&^#. Lovely. Rob gets the letter, which is also from Susan & Patrick, who hope they’re in last place. Nice ESP! But why couldn’t it be from Lynn & Alex? All it would have to say is, “Where are you? What are you doing right now? Are you on our flight? We need to know where you are!”
There is running through brush and yelling and falling and such as Charm and Romber race to the mat. Uchenna & Joyce are still at the Pit Stop, by the way, so it looks like the sequence of events here isn’t exactly as it was shown. Charm get to the mat before Romber, and Uchenna helps Charla over there. Grrrrr. Charla would love to get out of last place, and they are at least not out. Uchenna tells them to never quit.
So here we have quite a sight - Romber last to the mat, and eliminated. They share a kiss and Amber says at least they started off well. They just had a really bad leg. Amber says the end of the world is a great place to end the race, then says it’s not really the end. They liked having a second chance and enjoyed spending time together. Rob says he’ll miss not being able to compete - there’s a game going on and he’s not in it. But he does have a great wife, life, and family. He’s a lucky guy and is already a winner. I’m glad he can be a gracious loser.
Next week: Eric & Danielle and Guido aren’t too happy with each other. Teams have to deal with a rat, which Charm find gross and Joyce finds cute.
