Episode 307 (8/23) Recap
Eight designers remain. Heidi tells the designers they will be creating a look for an “everyday woman,” and they are shocked to discover that the models are their mothers and sisters. The twist: Designers will not be able to work with their own family member, but must choose someone else as their model. In the end, one designer is eliminated and seven remain.
Tim's Take
Eight designers remain. Heidi announces that they will be designing for the everyday woman. She adds, “Let's bring out your models.” Lo and behold, the designers are presented with their mother or sister and emotions run rampant. Then Heidi delivers the twist: The designers may not design for their own loved one. She produces the velvet bag containing each designer’s name to determine the order of selection.
Michael chooses Robert’s sister, Teresa.
Laura chooses Jeffrey’s mother, Pam.
Vincent chooses Uli’s mother, Heidi.
Angela chooses Laura’s mother, Lorraine.
Kayne chooses Michael’s mother, Pamela.
Uli chooses Kayne’s mother, Judy.
Robert chooses Vincent’s sister, Patricia.
Jeffrey is last to choose, so he must pick Angela’s mother Darlene, the last mother standing.
I meet the designers, mothers, and sisters in the workroom and announce that we’re all going to a special event that will be hosted by our guest judge for this challenge. This will give everyone a change to get to know one another and will allow our designers to catch up with their family member. Our destination is the incomparable Tavern on the Green in Central Park where we are greeted by Michael Kors and our special guest judge, Joan Kors -- Michael’s mother! She is warm and welcoming and full of joi de vivre. We have an al fresco brunch – omelets, fruit salad, gorgeous pastries, and flowing champagne. And the weather couldn’t have been better: sunny, a little cool in the shade, and zero humidity -- glorious.
Later, back in the workroom, the designers learn more parameters of the challenge: They are to design an everyday outfit for their everyday woman. Not evening, not active sport, not cocktail. They have 30 minutes to consult with their new model and they have one day (today) to complete the challenge. Then, the designers and I go shopping with a budget of $150.
Midway through the day, I bring in the models for a check-in and checkup. High drama unfolds between Jeffrey and Darlene. Darlene is unhappy with Jeffrey’s fabric choices, to which Jeffrey responds, “But I got what you wanted!” It unravels even more with crying and anger and interventions from Angela, who helped fuel the incendiary circumstances, and Pam, Jeffrey’s mom, who tried to extinguish the flames. Below are the final outcomes for everyone.
Vincent wins (note absence of exclamation point). Let’s begin with his model, Heidi (Uli’s mom). She could be a model; Heidi’s tall, gorgeous, and has a great figure. So Vincent was not even remotely challenged by the prospect of working with a new size, shape, or set of proportions. Therefore, his only challenge was design … and what was that? From my point of view, he made a simple sheath and adorned it with an oversized pilgrim-collar, and a collar that merely stood out on the front of the dress and didn’t even exist on the back. Huh? I didn’t get it and it certainly wasn’t my taste. But it suited the judges’ taste and that’s what matters. Congratulations Vincent, whatever you are.
Robert is OUT. Oh, dear. As sorry as I was to see Robert go, the judges had no other choice. His design for Patricia (Vincent’s sister) was a bomb, a big bomb. It left me speechless in the workroom, especially after Robert responded to my furrowed brow: “I know, I know, but it’s what Patricia wants.” He was resigned. How does one respond to a black jersey sleeveless muumuu with a coral red jersey voluminous kimono jacket? Not well. Either piece would ensure that Patricia would look larger than she is, but the two together added 50 pounds, easily. Although jersey was an excellent fabric choice, the key to designing for plus-size women is to cut the clothes slim in order to eliminate unflattering bagginess.
Angela’s design for Lorraine (Laura’s mom) was heavy on hippy-dippy and light on sophistication. The all-black ensemble consisted of a basic top and pant with a fringed shawl draped around the hip like a skirt, a hula skirt. Angela accessorized the look with one of her signature bags, which did nothing to advance the plot. In fact, it was an unnecessary distraction. Angela: Put your emotions on the shelf and observe your work with a good, critical eye.
Jeffrey’s design for Darlene (Angela’s mom) receives this week’s Jubilee Jumbles Award. It was a monastic, floor-length atrocity. (A holy mess, pun intended!) If he intended to seek revenge upon Darlene for the infractions he perceived she committed towards him, then he succeeded with this outfit. It’s one thing to declare that you don’t understand plus-size women (which he did declare), but it’s another to design a mortifying sack of a hideous dress. I applaud Darlene for being the good sport that she was and having the guts to wear it.
Laura’s design for Pam (Jeffrey’s mom) was a dull thud of an outfit. It was matronly in a British, Lady-of-the-Manor way. She paired a navy skirt with a celadon blouse and accented the collar with a scarf. Yawn. Pam had expressed a desire for an everyday outfit for a cruise, but I don’t believe she meant for staffing the cruise. Had Laura merely tied the scarf like an ascot, the look would have had a little more style and been less at risk.
Michael’s design for Teresa (Robert’s sister) was a contender for the win, in my opinion. His concept for a reversible shirt-dress was brilliant -- ambitious, but brilliant. He chose a solid black fabric for one side and backed it with a black and white paisley print. On the runway, Teresa worked the look like a pro and wore the black side out with the paisley print used for a belt and to accent the cuff of the sleeves. Beautiful.
Kayne’s design for Pamela (Michael’s mom) had wonderful potential, but was derailed by its unflattering proportions. Both the top and pant were too short and, consequently, bifurcated Pamela in the worst possible place. The cropped pant was a no-no (think long and fitted), the boat-neck of the top was too constricting, and the spangled mini-poncho/scarf looked arbitrary. Kayne, get back on your mark!
Uli’s design for Judy (Kayne’s mom) should have won, in my contrarian opinion. There, I said it. I am loath to disagree with the judges, but if Michael’s design was brilliant, then Uli’s was pure genius. Adorable Judy personifies the everyday woman in every way. She’s not a model size, has a limited shopping budget and resources, and would greatly benefit from some sage fashion advice. Uli delivered it all: silhouette, proportion, fit, fabrics, and style. It was a fabulous achievement. Bravo, Uli!

I really thought that Jeffrey should have been out, both for the ugly, uninspired and unbecoming outfit he created and because of his horrid treatment of Angela's mom. He was rude and condescending to her and didn't listen to her preferences at all. One of the most important responsibilities of a designer is giving the client what they want and he failed that miserably.
I would have chosen Uli as the winner. I really liked the sophisticated outfit she designed.
I didn't think Vincent's dress was as impressive as the judges did. To me, it was ill-fitting (too loose and wrinkled, not crisp) and kind of odd-looking.
When I watched the show, I liked Kayne's outfit but seeing pictures of it at the website, I didn't think it looked so good.
I'm glad the judges didn't give the win to Michael again. They sounded so impressed that his outfit was reversible but so what? Would they have kept Robert's awful outfit in if it was reversible? They even admitted that they weren't as impressed by the outfit until they found out it was reversible. His outfit this week makes me think of the girl on last season (was it Diana?) who did all the little gimmicky things. It catches the judges attention but the designers need to have more than just that.
BTW, I hadn't heard the contestants mention that Kayne had been fat before so that came as a total shock to me last night, seeing pictures of him as a little fat boy!! He sure is damn cute now. I bet he's gay, though. Pretty much all the male designers on the show have been.

I really like reading Tim's assessment of each episode...maybe because I completely agree with him. I'm so glad that we are also on the same page in regard to Vincent.

When I watched the show, I liked Kayne's outfit but seeing pictures of it at the website, I didn't think it looked so good. I can see the points that Tim (and the judges) made about this outfit. I still don't think it's that bad.

Yeah, I wouldn't have guessed that. He sure is damn cute now. Yes, he is. And I love the color of his hair. I bet he's gay, though. Probably. Pretty much all the male designers on the show have been.
