Episode 3 First Class and Cargo Class Awards
The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 3 First Class and Cargo Class Awards – The First Rule of ‘The Amazing Race’ Is… by Sandy Lamparello -- 03/07/2007 Our All-Stars remained in Chile for this episode, traveling from the Valley of the Dead to Petrohué. Along the way, the teams wrangled fish, went whitewater rafting, and bickered. But what factored in to the First and Cargo Class awards? It was another fast-paced week on The Amazing Race. Many teams are showing their old ways, some good, some not so good. If you haven’t yet read Jenn’s recap, go read it now. I’ll wait. All done? Now you know that the first rule of The Amazing Race is… read the clues! Remember that as we move on to the awards! First Class this week is going to Uchenna & Joyce. Jenn noted in her article that this team—particularly Joyce—has had a problem with attention to detail during this season. During a leg where that was a problem for several teams, they did not fall victim to it. Instead, they raced very efficiently, paid attention to every detail, and it paid off big time. They started the leg solidly in the middle of the pack, and pulled themselves up to second by the end. And along the way they had fun. Joyce & Uchenna have stated that their marriage has been strained by their inability to start a family, but there has been no evidence of any strain during the race. There have been many many instances of couples falling apart due to the stress on the race. I don’t need to name them, do I? Didn’t think so. Uchenna & Joyce have always acted in a respectful and supportive manner towards each other, no matter what they’ve faced. That hasn’t changed one bit on this race. And they are respectful to other teams as well, which is always a good idea early in the race when the weaker teams are weeded out. One last thing that I love about Uchenna & Joyce is that they often pause to appreciate the locations in which they find themselves. On this leg they were one of the teams to do so again. The Amazing Race is an incredible opportunity and if a team can focus on the race while still taking notice of their surroundings, they are winners regardless of their final place in the standings. Joyce & Uchenna are enjoying the sites, and appreciating the people. Uchenna hugged one of the people who gave them directions, and apologized for smelling like fish. Did it help them finish in second, or make a real difference in the race? No, but it sure didn’t hinder them, and politeness is never a bad idea. So, Uchenna & Joyce, head on in and take your place in First Class. Snuggle up with a cozy blanket and relax with a cool glass of champagne. You’ve earned it! Oh, and as for what’s wrong with the picture at the top of this article, it appears to show Uchenna & Joyce geared up for the “Vertical Limit” Detour. But we saw them complete the “River Wild” Detour, right? I know, they probably switched and since it apparently didn’t affect the outcome their attempt at VL ended up on the cutting room floor. Cargo Class is going to be very crowded this week. Three teams showed very poor attention to detail, and on an All-Star season that just should not happen. Joe & Bill (aka Guido), Kandice & Dustin, and David & Mary all fell victim to this pitfall, and the episode ended with Mary & David being Philiminated. After completing the fish wrangling task, fish whisperer Joe failed to write down the entire clue. In fact, he failed to NOTICE the entire clue. The others who performed the Roadblock clearly took their time reading the bottom of the tank, and knew exactly where they were headed to find their next clue. Had Guido not run into Charm along the way, they very likely would not have found the clue at all and would have found themselves Philiminated. For their sake I hope they’ve learned their lesson! Dustin & Kandice did get the full clue from the fish tank, but failed to follow its directions. That clue specifically said to look for their next clue, not a task or just a flag, which is what they found. Seeing a flag before they had retrieved another clue should have raised a huge red flag (pun intended) for them. At that point they should have paused; reread the clue Dustin copied from the fish tank, and headed back to retrieve their next clue. They already knew where the River Wild task was, so once they had the clue in hand they would have had an easy return trip to complete the Detour. They are extremely lucky that they didn’t lose ground when Phil sent them back to pick up the clue they missed. Finally, Mary & David also got the full clue, but missed a road sign telling them which way to turn to get to Petrohué. David realized he may have missed something important on the sign, but Mary arbitrarily decided it wasn’t important. Even more unbelievable than that, however, is David’s failure to stop the car and go back to check. It was never more clear than on this leg that David & Mary wouldn’t have gotten even a fraction as far as they did on TAR 10 if it were not for their alliancemates. They went so far out of their way and wasted so much time and ended up Philiminated. Had they taken a few minutes to double-check the sign, it’s likely they could have moved ahead of the other lost teams and they’d still be racing. So, Guido, Kandice & Dustin, and David & Mary, you’ll have lots to talk about in Cargo Class this week. It could be a bumpy ride, so find something solid and hang on! Hopefully the two of these teams who remain in the race will pay closer attention from now on! Next week, Romber v. Charm, a battle for taxis, and an ending we’ll all apparently be talking about.
