Episode 3: Break It to Me Gently
The Bachelor 10, Episode 3: Break It to Me Gently by Ashley Lundy -- 04/19/2007 It’s the third episode of The Bachelor. There are eleven women and nine roses to give away. Who gets messy in a mud bath? Who gets injured? Who goes race car driving? Who doesn’t know how to drive a stick shift? Welcome back! To start off the show, we get a quick recap of the last two whole episodes and clips of what we will see tonight. Why do we need to see this? We are about to watch it. And, we’re off! We see the ladies sleeping in their comfy beds, and it looks like they are all in one room. Suddenly, we hear the drill sergeant we have been promised barking that it’s time to get up. Kate says they were rudely woken up and they are all hung-over and tired. As the ladies come down the stairs, some in pink robes and sheepish grins, we continue to hear the drill sergeant yelling, “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.” Erin says she thought she could drink by the pool and hang out. This is not her idea of romance. Ya know, after her horrible showing in the “challenge” date last week, I have to ask: When is she going to understand that Andy likes girls that can handle all of this physical work? If she can’t handle it, maybe she isn’t for Andy. Maybe she knows and doesn’t care. Opposites DO attract. Anyway, Chris asks the ladies if they are awake, which they are. He welcomes them to boot camp. Since Andy is a proud member of the U.S. Navy, they thought it would be important to show the girls what that life is like. The twist is that there is one rose on the line. At the end of boot camp, the drill sergeant will decide who has earned and deserves that rose. With that, the drill sergeant tells them “Life sucks and then you die, ladies.” So, he believes in positive reinforcement. He tells the ladies to go upstairs and put on their “PT” clothes, which means “physical training,” not “party time” clothes. The ladies all go upstairs and change. Peyton says Andy is a hardcore person, and she thinks going through boot camp will show him that they are there for the right reasons. See. Peyton’s being a good sport. Why couldn’t Erin? The drill sergeant (who I’m going to name Lenny since they didn’t tell us his name) is now in the ladies room and yelling at them to make up their beds. He says their room looks like a bordello. He starts handing out toothbrushes so they can scrub the bathroom floor. Amber did not like this whatsoever. Mostly, because she wasn’t done getting ready. The ladies are supposed to go downstairs, outside, and line up. And pronto. Lenny is yelling that he needs twelve ladies downstairs now and they don’t need to fix their hair. Then we see Nicole putting lotion on her legs. By the time she gets outside, she is obviously last and Lenny tells her that she might as well pack her bags. Nicole is so frightened, she agrees! She starts to head back to the house, but Lenny calls her back. The girls laugh at Nicole. Lenny chides them for laughing. Nicole tells us that Bachelor boot camp was miserable. Miserable. Yes, she said it twice. The girls are running in place and Lenny leads them in a round of “I don’t know what I’ve been told.” He says they sound like a bunch of nuns. Bevin is looking strong. Bevin tells us that she really wants the rose, so she is going to do whatever Lenny asks her to do. Erin is pissed because she just went on a date and had to exercise and here she is, exercising again. Waaaa. Now, Lenny shows them to an obstacle course. There are tires and crawling involved. Kate immediately yells out “what about grass stains?” Lenny asks her if she is more interested in having clean clothes or a rose. She quips back, “Can I have both?” Oh geez. Another girl who is not getting it. One at a time, the girls go through the course. Bevin is really in character. She is addressing Lenny with a “sir” after her responses. I think Lenny is impressed. I sure am. I like that Bevin. Remember that she is mountain-bike-scar-girl. We know she is Andy’s type. Then, out of nowhere, we see Bevin fall over on the tire section. Like on the second tire. She is crying and tells someone that she has broken her ankle before and she thinks that she just did it again. Oh, a revisited injury. That can’t be good. They call for a medic. Lenny comes to Bevin and asks her if she heard or felt anything break. She says that she felt a snap. They get some ice. Oh, poor Bevin. Voila! Here comes Andy to come and rescue the day. Lenny asks Andy if he is the medic. Andy replies that he is the doctor. I guess Lenny and Andy didn’t meet beforehand. Andy does a little exam and concludes that it’s a displaced fracture of her left ankle and she needs an ambulance. The ambulance comes in and Tessa tells us that she was shocked to see that Bevin’s injury was that bad. Bevin is crying to Andy at how embarrassed she is. Then, in a very chivalrous moment, Andy offers Bevin a rose. Just like that. Can he just do that? Anytime he wants? I guess so. Bevin, of course, accepts. Then, Andy helps get her on the stretcher. Andy tells us he was proud to give the rose not only to the “fallen soldier” but also to the woman who gave it her all that morning and did it for him. Ok, he’s cheesy, but adorably sweet. I’m still smitten. Thoroughly smitten. Andy tells the ladies still in boot camp that he is going to the hospital with Bevin. A little unscheduled private time, huh? Who knew that a broken ankle could be so advantageous? Now the ladies are coming back inside to talk to Chris. I guess boot camp is over. Or, maybe when Andy gave the rose to Bevin, he ended the challenge. Maybe they will clear this up for us. Tessa says they are all a little worried about Bevin. Chris tells them that the morning did not go as planned. The good news is that Bevin’s ankle is not broken and she is coming back. Then he tells them about the dates. There will be two group dates and a special two-on-one date. As usual, on the group dates, one girl will get special alone time with Andy. The first group date box suddenly appears. It’s for Stephanie W., Nicole, Amber, Tina, and Stephanie T. The note says, “Let’s spend the day relaxing together.” The date box is full of spa products. Amber tells us that she thinks it’s a good group, but she will have to watch out for Stephanie T. Stephanie might be used to the one-on-one time and not willing to share him with other girls. Cue the stretch limo for the group date. Andy tells us he’s so glad that Bevin is ok. Now, they are going to a spa to do a mud bath. The girls are going down in the muck. They start smearing mud all over each other. Stephanie T. says that she and Andy are very attracted to each other. They are both into taking care of their bodies. When they see each other in a bathing suit, it’s like “come here.” Andy is making some serious shenanigans in the mud pool. Stephanie W. complains to us about Stephanie T. hogging Andy. Stephanie W. says she is going to step it up and do something about this problem. She plays with Andy. I wish they could just use their last names or something. They call Stephanie W. “Stephanie Kansas” and Stephanie W. “Stephanie South Carolina.” I don’t like those much better either. Ok, take note, I am going to refer to Stephanie W. as “W” and Stephanie T. as “T” from now on. Tina tells us that she just sat in the corner of the mud bat because she was uncomfortable. She doesn’t like the ladies putting their hands all over the body of the man she is supposed to marry. Clean up time! They head to the showers and rinse off the mud. Andy tells them it’s the most relaxing group date ever. They are cleaning each other. “W” tells us that ever since their date, she has been thinking about Andy non-stop. She can’t get enough of him. We see her hugging up to him in the showers. Rather shamelessly. Andy doesn’t push her away. Nicole complains that “W” is always in there and doesn’t acknowledge that it’s a group date. Personally, I think that “W” just asserted herself more. I don’t see the problem. Get in there, Nicole! Back at the house, Bevin is back with rose and crutches and all. The girls greet her. She shows them how her ankle is all bruised up. Apparently, at some time during the broken ankle fiasco, Andy gave Bevin a watch. She takes it off and shows the other girls. They all like it and say it’s expensive. Bevin admits that she and Andy got to talk a lot at the hospital, even if there were doctors and nurses all around. Amanda confesses that they are all jealous of Bevin because she got extra time, a rose, and a watch. I call that a lucky break. Har Har. Well, or non-break. Back at the group date, everyone is clean and robed up. Champagne is opened and Andy tells us that the special alone time tonight will include a nice massage. He has to figure out who to ask. They all toast, yet again, and Nicole mumbles that she will never look at mud the same. “W” says she’s never had that much fun in mud before. She’s had fun in mud, but not that much fun. She played in the mud as a little girl. Amber says that “W” kept trying to get Andy’s attention, which was awkward. Again, I say, get in there! Stop letting her steamroll you! They ask Andy what was his longest relationship. He says two and a half years. Tina’s was a year and a half. “W” had a three year and a four year relationship. The longest of the group. For the special alone time, Andy chooses “T” and “W” looks absolutely stunned. I laugh out loud. You can’t win ‘em all, girl. “T” and Andy go off for their massage. “W” complains to the camera. She thought she and Andy had something special. She is not happy. Not happy at all. “T” tells us she was thrilled when Andy picked her. He makes her feel comfortable. Then we see Andy unknowingly return the compliment by saying she makes him feel comfortable. “W” is telling the group that she didn’t get to reconnect with Andy at the last rose ceremony. Oh, I think you are connected just fine. He has to consider his options though. All’s fair, as they say. Tina tells us that she feels “W” had her confidence go down a little. She realized that other girls have chemistry with him too. Now, “T” is personally massaging Andy. Lucky girl. She tells us that she really enjoyed massaging him. He has muscles in places she didn’t know existed. The next date box arrives. It’s for Kate, Danielle, Erin, and Amanda. “Ladies, start your engines.” They deduce that it’s about cars. Brilliant. Peyton and Tessa also deduce that they are the ones on the two-on-one date. Tessa says she is excited to have more time with Andy, but she is not excited about one of them not coming home. Amanda says the girls are all excited to drive race cars, so that better be what they are doing or they will be disappointed. Andy comes to get the ladies for the group date. He asks Bevin if she is taking care of her ankle. She says yes. He is bummed that she can’t come on the date. They get in an RV and head to the race track. They are indeed going to race cars. No disappointment then. Amanda tells them that she used to race home to make curfew when she was younger. There is a two mile stretch home and she would get up to 120mph. Andy says that the alone time with the ladies before the race is important because he still doesn’t know who he is going to keep and let go. Erin and Andy have a private talk. She tells us that she thinks Andy may have a misconception of her. He may think she is always prissy, but that isn’t her at all. Really? He has not seen her true personality and she is going to show him that. Erin tells him that this is her kind of date. The only thing that might have been as cool would be to go to a shooting range. Andy seems surprised to hear that she likes to shoot guns. She says it’s like stress relief. He makes a mental note to take her shooting. They goof off and flirt. He tells us that Erin likes to do manly things, like shoot guns and that is attractive. Danielle has Andy’s ear. She says she feels like she has an attraction to him. They believe in fate. She’s rambling a little, I think. She brings up her boyfriend in college passing away. She tells us that she was in bed with her boyfriend of three years and when she woke up, he had passed away. It changed the way she looks at her relationships. It was a defining moment in her life. She mentions that her mom was very supportive during that time. Danielle was so upset. She asked her mom how she can move on from this. Her mom told her that while he was there, they were probably supposed to be together. Andy gets a sweet sentimental look on his face and hugs her. Aww. She says she will find that again. Andy agrees. He tells us that he thinks Danielle is there for the right reasons. We see Amanda say that Andy is up for anything. Kate says that he is probably looking for a girl who is the same as him. Up for anything. Perhaps, like a triathlon, Erin. Andy tells us that women who race cars are so sexy. The ladies come out of the RV in racing jumpsuits. Kate shows some cleavage and holds rearview mirror dice. The race works like this. When they cross the start, time starts. They have to go around the cones as fast as possible. Hit the finish line, time stops. Every cone they hit is a two second penalty. He asks who’s going first. Amanda says “me!” She is indeed quite a good racer. Her time is fifty-three seconds. Andy says Amanda is a natural. She ripped up the course. Next is Danielle. Danielle isn’t bad either. Her time is fifty-four seconds. Andy liked that she was laughing and seemed giddy and happy. She showed him a different side of her. Now, Kate is behind the wheel. She is a little wild and she lost control of the car. Her time is fifty-three seconds. Erin is up and she doesn’t even get across the start line at first because she can’t drive a stick shift. Andy teaches her. Her time is fifty-seven seconds and now she can drive a manual transmission. Andy loved the date and didn’t know who to pick for the special alone time. He ends up picking Erin. She is super excited. It’s her time to shine. They get in the Lamborghini and drive into the sunset. He tries to impress her by driving fast. He tells her that he really likes her and he wants to know if she feels the same way. She definitely likes him, but she is a little shy. The whole setting is different. Awkward silence follows. She breaks it by saying that what you see is not what you get with her. He wants to get to that inner side of her. She says she just has to be herself. Andy looks annoyed. She goes on to say that she wants to stay, but she’s not competitive. Andy tells us that it’s a competition and he believes that Erin is more than meets the eye, but she needs to bring that out and show it to him. The two-on-one date box arrives. It’s a green duffle bag. Peyton and Tessa go fetch it. The note says, “For your special two-on-one date, there is only one rose. One stays. One goes.” It’s signed by Chris. Weird. The bag has sailor’s clothes in it. One shirt says, “Future sailor’s wife.” The girls try on the sailor’s hats. Peyton does not think the date will be a piece of cake. She will do what she has to do because she wants the rose. We see Peyton and Tessa in a limo. Tessa tells us that she really likes Peyton, but that’s not what tonight is about. Tonight is about getting to know Andy better and finding out if he is the one for her. They arrive at San Diego harbor, where Andy is waiting for them on the U.S.S. Midway. The girls get to the big aircraft carrier. Peyton says it makes sense to have a date there because Andy is in the Navy. Amazing how she figured that out. Andy greets them and tells them they look so pretty. They hug. He shows them around. He tells us that he is comfortable on naval ships. It is his home. He wants them to get a little taste of that. The tour of the carrier continues. There are 4,500 men on the carrier. We see their bunks and the cafeteria, specially equipped with fake mannequin line cook. Tessa says it’s great seeing Andy in his element. He is confident and comfortable. It made him a real person to her. We see the medical area, also equipped with mannequins doing surgery. Andy says that’s where he would be and exactly what he would be doing. He gives them a run through of his daily duties. He checks Peyton’s heartbeat and says it’s in need of some love. Peyton says that she knew Andy was an amazing person, but after tonight and seeing his passion, she is in this. She wants someone like that in her life. Someone to move her and drive her to be the best person she can be. Now, they walk on the top deck and chat with champagne in hand. He talks about how the Navy was originally a way to go to Duke and med school. He educates the ladies on what it would be like to be a Navy wife. Andy asks them if they have dated a doctor or a military guy. Neither has, so they toast to him being their first. Tessa also says it’s the first date she’s been on with two girls and one guy. What about eight girls to one guy? I think she’s done that. Andy escorts the ladies to a dinner table. Peyton says that she is having an amazing time with both Andy and Tessa. It’s hard to think that one of them is leaving tonight. Peyton sees the lone rose on the table and points it out. Andy says it’s the bane of his existence tonight. He asks them how they feel. Nerve wrecked. They toast to a good evening so far and decide not to think about it. Back at the house, the girls discuss who they think will come back and who will go home. Nicole says that Peyton will come back. Bevin hopes that it’s Tessa, because she bonded with her, but she feels Peyton is coming back. Kate has no idea. Back on the date, Peyton and Andy go off for a little alone time. They sit on a bench. It’s very windy. Peyton is really nervous because she feels a connection with him and she doesn’t want to leave without him knowing how she feels. She thinks they are perfect together. She tells him that, tonight it has all become very real to her. She loves how passionate he is about his work. It’s all hit her. He asks her what she thinks. She’s crazy about him. He’s wonderful. He is the person she is looking for. She is a little bit freaked out and excited. They have a lot in common. She tells us it’s real. Her heart is in this. She will be crushed if she goes home. Andy says that Peyton has been so open and honest with her affection and emotions tonight. She embodies what he is about and what he wants in his life. He feels like Tessa has a lot of potential, but she has been guarded up to this point. He would like to see her let him into her comfort zone. Tessa and Andy have their alone time. They talk about San Francisco and time share condos in Tahoe. She admits that when she is not with Andy, she isn’t sure the experience is right for her. As soon as she gets to him, she wants to be here. He just wants to make sure that she likes him. She admits that she only doubts it when she is in the house around a bunch of girls. He worries about that. Is it a big sorority party or are they interested in him? He tells her that he likes her. She likes him too. They hug. A helicopter shows up and lands on the carrier, presumably to take one of the ladies away. Andy goes to get the rose. The girls hug, to stay warm just as much as to comfort each other. Andy says the date has been so amazing. After a long pause, he asks Tessa to accept the rose. Peyton is very gracious and backs away to let them hug. He takes Tessa to the helicopter. I think he is crying a little. Or it’s allergy season. Peyton can’t believe this happened. It was a huge step for her to lay it out so early. She is crying and saying it sucks. He hugs her and tells her that she is so amazing. He appreciates her heart and soul and laying it on the line tonight. He knows there is the right man for her out there. He is broken up. He says she is an amazing person. She thanks him. He runs back to get on the helicopter with Tessa. Peyton tells us that she and Andy could have been great together. She felt it with him. She thinks she should be on the helicopter with him, but, apparently, he doesn’t think so. Andy tells us that he developed substantial chemistry with Tessa tonight. She seized the moment and opened up to him. He sees wife material in her. Peyton says she will find the love of her life. She is a great catch and will find that man who will lift her off of her feet. In the helicopter, Andy and Tessa kiss. You go, muffin girl. Time for the cocktail party with the women. He has to say goodbye to three more tonight, and Peyton was so hard. He doesn’t want to do it. He greets them. Like a good doctor, he asks Bevin how she is doing. Again, good. Andy reminds us that Bevin and Tessa already have roses. His goal is to evaluate the nine remaining women. He wants to find out their reasons for being here. The girls are all nervous. Amanda asks Andy how he is feeling tonight. His mental state is on the stressful side. She tells us she feels there is more pressure to make an impression on Andy tonight. He puts his jacket on her. I guess she was cold. He asks her to tell him what she has been dying to tell him. She says she likes to tell stories. He wants to hear an Amanda story about the most romantic evening she has ever had. She says the group date the other night. Andy tells us that he and Amanda have a great physical connection, but he consistently has to engage her on a deeper level. She says she has all these stories to tell him, but when he asks to hear one, she doesn’t tell him any. Now, Kate and Andy are chatting. He mentions that it’s chilly. We see her wearing his jacket too. She asks him if he thinks she is a wild party sorority girl. He says he sees in her a woman who is very outspoken, fun and a ring leader. She says that she is not the ring leader. At home, she is more about her business and is a homebody. She says she is cool, chill, and relaxed and he hasn’t gotten to see that side of him. He says that now is the time. Kate tells us that she felt really pressured when Andy asked to see her serious side. She wonders what she is supposed to do, rescue an orphan from a fire. She thinks she is going home. He talks with both of the Stephanies. “T” says they are alike, but also different. Andy asks how they are different. “T” is louder. “W” is shy. “T” is aggressive. “W” is old-fashioned. “T” is brunette. “W” is blonde. Andy tells us that his only one-on-one date was with “T” and they had some affection, but he wonders how sincere she is. Good concern. Bevin is feeling insecure about Andy because she didn’t get to spend any time with him. She goes out on the patio and he comes out to join her. He calls her his “favorite patient” and she calls him her “favorite doctor.” He checks her ankle. They cuddle a little and then kiss. She giggles a lot. They hug. It’s cute and sweet. I’m really liking Bevin. The girls inside notice Bevin and Andy getting “comfy cozy”. Nicole thinks she should have broken her foot. Erin is nervous. She thinks she and Andy have a connection, but the girls that are really aggressive and driving that connection harder are the ones who are ahead. Tina and Andy talk. She asks him about his flaws. He is really hard on himself. He can be too analytical. It’s the science in him. He has to learn to go with his gut feeling. Tessa tells us she is feeling good. Yesterday was like being on cloud nine. He’s not her boyfriend, but it’s weird to think he is talking and connecting to other girls. Andy tells all the women that he is feeling the pressure tonight. Chris comes in and says it’s time for Andy to make his decision. The ceremony begins. Chris reminds them that Peyton has already gone home and since Tessa and Bevin have roses, there are only seven roses left. Andy tells the ladies that he hates this part. The first rose goes to Amber. Danielle gets a rose. “W” gets a rose. Tina gets a rose. Kate gets a rose. Nicole gets a rose. The final rose goes to “T.” Darn. I have to write “W” and “T” for another week, at least. The unlucky ladies eliminated are Erin and Amanda. Erin says she hates to go home. She put herself out there, but it wasn’t enough. Amanda is shocked. It doesn’t make sense at all. She honestly felt like they had a chance if they got to know each other better. She didn’t get a chance to show who she really was. You should have told him a story. We close out the show with Kate trying to pop the top on some champagne. She tries a wine corkscrew, which doesn’t work. Erin clues her in that she just needs to pop it out, and she gets it. Next week, the ladies go on a private jet to Lake Tahoe. Some girls are losing it. Intense drama is promised.
