The Apprentice: Los Angeles, Episode 2 Extras – What’s in a Name? by Jenn Brasler -- 01/20/2007 We had to watch Kinetic at the Playboy Mansion this week, so that means there wasn’t a lot of time for other, arguably more important scenes. For instance, wonder how the teams got their names? And what celebrity joined Trump and Ivanka to find out what those names were? The bunnies were more important, but the extras fill us in. This week’s webisode begins with Trump telling us what the task of the week is. Heidi thinks that the task should be interesting. She says she’s especially motivated to win because it means she gets to continue being project manager. In their team’s van, Heidi, Marisa, and Jenn brainstorm about bathing suits. Marisa mentions that when she was in high school, she organized fashion shows every year. She’s glad to be on the design team because fashion is something she’s interested in. Not to be outdone, Heidi (who’s starting to bug me more) says that she used to be a swimsuit model. I’m starting to see why Marisa doesn’t appreciate her that much anymore. On the way to the fashion show, Marisa accidentally spills some coffee on the swimsuits (and Heidi). Heidi says she tried to stay calm, but they’re on their way to the show, so they can’t do anything right now. Surya tries to suggest some ways to clean up. He interviews that there are only six things they needed to worry about, and they’ve spilled coffee on them. He’s appropriately incredulous. Fortunately, someone has one of those Tide pens (which the editors blur out, despite the fact that they were a part of an Apprentice: Martha Stewart task) and Marisa uses it to clean up. She admits that she’s disappointed in herself. While the teams are getting ready for the show, Heidi tries to convince Surya to model one of the suits. He doesn’t want to walk the catwalk shirtless, and he says he’ll wear a towel, but only in a way he’s comfortable with. Heidi says that she’s not saying he has to do this, but Surya notes that she keeps pushing him when he says he’s not comfortable with it. Heidi passive-aggressively says she’s just making a suggestion, then backs down and says they just won’t show that piece. Of course, this would mean only showing five out of six suits, which would lose them money. Surya gives in and asks if that’s cool. Heidi says no, adding that she just wants Surya to be comfortable. Then stop bugging him! Surya says he’ll do it and adds that it’s not a big deal, but they’re making it one. Seriously. In a deleted scene, the teams get a call from Trump. Stefani and Muna answer for their respective scenes and Trump patches them into a three-way call. Stefani assures him that Arrow will be leaving the backyard after this task. Muna laughs and says that remains to be seen. Stefani tells Kinetic to pack their bags because Arrow is ready to move in. Muna tells her that there’s no space for them, so they should just make a U-turn and go right back out. That plus her comment this week about knowing more about Carey than she wanted to know make me really like Muna. In a segment that obviously takes place before the action of this week’s episode, Trump tells both teams that it’s time for them to brand themselves with team names and signs. He’ll be bringing a special guest to see them and comment on their branding. Kinetic starts brainstorming with names like Take Action, Movement, Vitality, Spirit, Energy, and, of course, Kinetic (which appears to be Muna’s suggestion). Derek suggests some sort of visual of energy working. They paint a sign and Derek spies on Arrow outside. Arrow has already decided on their name and is sketching out a team sign that consists of a bulls-eye. Their arrow is part of the A in their team name. Michelle doesn’t like that the arrow isn’t hitting the target. Frank interviews that Michelle looks into things too much. This is supposed to be something simple, and they don’t that much time to spend on this. Now Michelle wants “Arrow” written larger. Man, she’s a micromanager. Trump and Ivanka visits the mansion with special guest Regis Philbin in tow. You know how Regis is all loud and jokey on his show all the time? Apparently he’s like that in real life, too. Surya tells Trump about Kinetic’s name and motto, which is, “We keep it moving.” Trump likes their logo, which is pretty cool – it’s a pendulum swinging from the K in Kinetic. Regis thinks it’s funny when Derek calls him Reeg. Over at Arrow, Aaron wants Michelle, who’s giving the presentation, to mention that the sign was hand-painted. Well, of course it was. They didn’t have time to hire a professional. Michelle says that she’s not taking care of the whole conversation. Carey gives a hilarious look like, “Crazy woman says what?” Trump, Ivanka, and Regis arrive and Michelle, despite her earlier protestations, gives the whole presentation. She sounds very rehearsed. She says that Arrow wants to be globally recognized. Carey interviews that she makes a moment out of everything, as if this moment is to be remembered forever. I miss Carey already. Regis teases that Kinetic called him Mr. Regis. Frank likes his team’s logo – “it really gets to the point.” Har har. In another deleted scene, Heidi, Jenn, and Marisa head to a store to research Trina Turk’s suits. Smart! They notice that her shorts look pretty long. Jenn interviews that they wanted to make sure there was no chance they messed up Trina’s message. The three meet Trina (and Ivanka’s wandering around in the background). Trina says that she’s inspired by the surf/beach culture, as well as architecture. Jenn interviews that Trina and her suits are casual and laid back. She doesn’t want the teams to reinvent the wheel, just make something she can sell in her store. Arrow shops for fabric and Nicole explains that the women are focusing on the women’s suits while the men work on the men’s. Except Michelle didn’t seem to get that memo, as she’s criticizing the men’s fabric choices. Michelle also doesn’t think that short shorts are good for a Trina Turk design. She’s finally right about something! “I wouldn’t wear it,” she declares. Of course, they’re men’s shorts, so unless she has a special situation we don’t know about, I wouldn’t expect her to wear them. Carey interviews that when someone jumps on your creativity, you wish you could strangle that person. Michelle tells the team they have to think like the buyer. She’s right about something else! I still don’t like her, though. Michelle then talks to Aaron like he’s a child. That’s the way to endear yourself to a teammate. Lovely! We get to see the whole Playboy reward uncut! I’m so thrilled. Hef tells Kinetic that Trump was on one of his covers. He jokes that he tried to get him to do a pictorial, but Trump was too shy. At the pool party, Surya chats with a bunny, who obviously wants to just hang out with the other bunnies. He interviews that being on a team with seven women was good practice for coming here; he’s had some experience talking to lots of women now. He learns that the bunny he’s talking to wants to go to school to get her nursing degree. Wouldn’t it be funny if one of her patients recognized her, and then couldn’t say anything because then his wife would know what he’s doing in his spare time? (And I don’t mean watching The Apprentice.) Trump arrives and Hef asks him if he can pick his “girls” out of the crowd. One, ew. Two, they’re not “girls,” they’re “women.” Three, the thought of these businesswomen being “Trump’s” makes my skin crawl. And four, ew again. Trump jokes that they sort of all blend in. Ew some more. Trump tells everyone that he came to Hef’s birthday party (with Ivanka – EW!), and Hef says Trump was the only one in a tie. Trump says he was well behaved and is proud of himself for that. If I were Melania, I’d be suspicious. In part of the uncut Boardroom, Trump asks Arrow how they like living in the tents. He seriously will not stop talking about the tents to anyone who will listen. He told Hef and Regis, too. He thinks he’s so great for this twist. Anyway, Nicole says that her hair is pulled back because the water was too cold to take a shower. Ivanka jokingly asks if she just decided not to shower. She asks if the team thinks living in the tents is affecting their dynamic. She assumed they would rally in order to get out of there as soon as possible. Nicole says that they did, but they took it too far. In Carey’s exit interview (one of the best ever), he says that he thought he could win because he’s hot. Ha! He adds that it’s really because he works in marketing and does these tasks all the time. He laughs about Trump being in the audience while he was modeling. Carey says the Boardroom is unbelievably tense; you’re energetic and there’s a lot of pressure, and the room is hot. He says he was accused of ramming his design down his teammates’ throats, but in marketing, he does this sort of task all the time, and if he rammed ideas down people’s throats, he’d be out of a job. He knew he shouldn’t be going home and that Michelle wasn’t being truthful, but he wasn’t able to tell Trump that. The best part of the experience for Carey was getting to know so many different people. Frank was great, Martin was odd, and Carey and Michelle actually hung out a little, partly because they’re both cute and could maybe have cute babies together. But then she took a turn for the worst. Carey says that when he goes home, he’ll be designing swimsuits and underwear: “What an odd thing!” I think he’s actually serious, which is funny. He adds that if Trump is listening, he should come to Atlanta and they’ll talk. Dang, Carey was great. I guess I need a new Apprentice boyfriend now. I think I’ll go with Derek. (Which means I probably just doomed him. Sorry, Derek!)
