Episode 19, July 27 So You Think You Can Dance 2, July 27: The Shocker Cometh
by Sting7 -- 07/28/2006
Last night, Stinger smelled a shocking dismissal in the air. And, he was right! It always happens at this stage of the competition. Donyelle and Travis, paired for the first time, did not have a great debut. Could these frontrunners leave us tonight? Tonight’s result is sending shockwaves!
Last night, the final eight dancers gave everything they had to stay in the competition. Some had rougher nights than others. The air is primed for something shocking. Is this a false alarm? Let’s find out.
Our dancers worked to “Cell Block Tango” from the original soundtrack recording of Chicago. Fun number, and no dancers hidden in the back. Hullo, Cat Deeley! Tight dress, hair straight and not coital.
Cat says another record was broken, 10 million votes cast last night! Intro the judges. Nigel, any surprises in who’s in the top eight? No, he says, its all subjective now – all of the dancers are great, its just personal preference anymore, and he’s more excited that dance is booming in America. So You Think You Can Dance is the most Tivo’d show in America, and he’s even happy about the success of Dancing With the Stars. Mary, who’s most improved? Mary does not hesitate to say Ivan. She didn’t even want him in the top twenty, now “look at him go – wow!” Is this a competition for dancers, Dan? Yep, says Dan. Dancers tend to specialize in a particular style, yet they are asking the dancers to learn styles they’ve never done in two days. They are “incredible.”
Recap of last night’s show. Yeah, we know, we know. On with the results, girls first.
Donyelle and Natalie, front and center. Chances are one of them is in the bottom two. Probably, Natalie. Yes, it is Natalie. Donyelle is… safe! Donyelle can’t believe it!
Now, my Allison and Heidi. This is tough, it should be Heidi, but it could be Allison. One of them is in the bottom two. It’s Allison! Whoa! NOOOO! After that great hip hop routine? I’m stunned.
Now for the men… first, Benji and Ryan. There is no way in hell Benji is in the bottom two. Ryan, get warmed up. You’ll be soloing. Right? Right. Benji is safe! Ryan is not.
Ivan and Travis. Should be Ivan, I refuse to believe Travis could be in the bottom two again. He is! What????? This sucks! My Allison, mah boy Travis in the bottom two?? America, what have you done!
Unless I miss my guess, all four dancers in the bottom are contemporary dancers! Natalie does an energetic contemporary routine. Nigel says if she leaves tonight, America got it wrong. Mary says Natalie is fantastic. Dan says she is a joy to watch.
Ryan has plenty of attitude and passion in his dance. Nigel says he thinks the problem with Ryan is that Ryan has a self-esteem problem, and he doesn’t need to. He’s a “lovely lad.” Mary says Ryan dances with power like a lion (I think she’s a poet and doesn’t know it). Dan says Ryan hung in the fringe in the beginning, but came on strong in the last few weeks, he’s a fantastic dancer.
Allison is full of energy and sex appeal in her number. Nigel is out of superlatives, he says, he hates that he’s losing any of the women tonight. But, Allison has so much to offer to the world of dance. Mary gives her a WOOOOO! Dan says Allison is “hands down” the most versatile dancer of the season.
Travis is fantastic in his solo as he always is. He is fun and awe-inspiring all that the same time. Nigel says Travis always makes him smile, and it’s a “travesty” that Travis is in the bottom two. Mary agrees loudly, there is no way Travis should be in the bottom two. Dan makes it unanimous and says Nick Lazzarini was a great dancer and had a great personality, and Travis has that as well.
Lo and behold, there is Nick, and he’s holding a Travis sign! That’s what’s called an endorsement!
Busta Rhymes, one of the fastest spitters in the world of hip hop, is here to tell us “I Love My Chick” as well as a medley of some of his other songs. He’s plugging his album, for sure, but Busta is a pro.
Nigel tells us that the top ten tour is on! Details on the Fox website.
Time for the cut. Ugh. I just hate this. Allison or Natalie. We say goodbye to… Allison! Natalie is crying like it was her name announced! Oh, final four week. How I’ve come to hate it. Yeah, there is a funeral video. I’m just destroyed. After the video, the audience and judges give her a standing ovation. Allison dances one last number to “Woman’s Work” by Kate Bush, using Travis as a prop at times. He’s looking as bummed as I am.
If Travis goes home tonight, I don’t think I can continue. Cat says its time to find out. Ryan and Travis on the bubble. Leaving tonight is… Ryan.
Whew. Much love and peace to Ryan, but I couldn’t handle it if Travis left. Ryan gets his funeral video. Ryan dances us to the credits.
Wow. I didn’t want to be right. Allison, I * heart * you forever. {Sniff!} Ryan, you are awesome, that technique will carry you a long way.
I’m going to have a good cry now. I will see you next week.

I was expecting Ryan to be the one to go. He just doesn't let his personality show while he's dancing the way the others do. As for the girls, I didn't know who it would be. I like Heidi the best so I really didn't want it to be her, and after the two superb dances she did with cousin Benji I really didn't think she'd be in the bottom two, and even if she was, the judges would keep her.
When Allison and Natalie were standing side by side, it looked like they could be sisters, they were so much alike. It was almost like flipping a coin. Nigel's comment made it clear that Natalie would not be the one cut, no matter how their solos turned out. It was the same with the guys. It was clear before their solos that Travis would stay and Ryan would go.
Allison's solo was good but poor Travis, used as the guy she was emoting for, looked like he was ready to cry. I half expected him to grab her and say, "Don't go!"

I personally think Natalie and Ryan should have been gone already. They've both been in the bottom two many times. Ryan just seems emotionless to me and Natalie does well in her solos but tends to disappear when she's with a partner. She needs to learn how to shine in a partnership or her whole career will be limited to dancing solo.
