Episode 13 MVP – Yau-Mania Survivor: Fiji, Episode 13 MVP – Yau-Mania
by Betsy Wasser -- 05/11/2007
Is there really any doubt in anyone’s mind about who deserves this week’s Most Valuable Player award? From start to finish, Yau-Man played a fantastic game. Read on to find out what makes him so deserving.
I’ll admit it: I am in the midst of some total Yau-Mania. That tough little man is quickly becoming one of my favorite players ever. He’s likeable, he’s canny, and he is willing to think outside the box to get what he wants. In this episode, he made one good decision after another, and I was cheering all the way. Let’s look at how this went down.
Yau-Man won the reward challenge, scoring himself a great big truck. I don’t think for a minute he really wanted that truck. Prizes are pretty minor compared to winning a million bucks, and besides, can you imagine little Yau-Man driving that thing? Boo was drooling over the truck, but the person who really wanted it was Dreamz. So, Yau-Man made him a deal: Dreamz could have the truck if, at the final four, if Dreamz won immunity, he’d give it to Yau-Man. Dreamz immediately agreed.
Final four is the part of the game that was worrying Yau-Man the most. His bond with Earl is solid, and he’s happy with the idea of facing Earl and Cassandra at three. But Dreamz makes him nervous. Dreamz is the most athletic of the four of them and thus the one most likely to win immunity. Yau-Man has been worried that he’ll get knocked out at that point in the game. But with this deal, he’d be safe and guaranteed a spot in the final three.
Frankly, Dreamz was an idiot for taking the deal. He should realize that Earl and Yau-Man are close, and that the three of them have been with Cassandra for quite a while. He and Cassandra are close, but there’s no guarantee that would take him to the final three. Honestly, it was like Yau-Man offered him the truck and all Dreamz could do was think, “Oooh, shiny” and agree to anything. And it was only after the reward and some time to think that the light bulb went off over Dreamz’s head and he realized, “Hey! Money can be exchanged for goods and services!” In other words, if he were to win the million dollars, he could buy his very own truck. Duh! He put himself in danger for absolutely no good reason.
Dreamz could, of course, go back on his word. Yau-Man isn’t worried about that, and I wouldn’t be either. Not because lying to Yau-Man would make Dreamz look bad in front of the jury (thought it might), but because Dreamz is a very simple person. If he says he’ll do something, he will.
Yau-Man’s next smart move was sending himself to Exile Island. He gave Earl a break from the snakes, got the third clue, and immediately shared it with Earl. He also helped Earl get some time away from camp so he could find it. In so doing, Yau-Man really cemented his bond with Earl. Earl helped Yau-Man get the first idol, and Yau-Man did the exact same thing for him. Because Earl and Yau-Man are now idol brothers, Earl might even give his idol to Yau-Man to save him if he needs to.
The Earliance’s plans for tribal council were messed up when Boo won immunity. Dreamz immediately planned a coup, teaming with Cassandra, Stacy, and Boo to blindside Yau-Man. Stacy gave an excellent performance, telling Earl that she basically understood that her time was up. Earl was confident that all was well in the Earlliance.
But Yau-Man was feeling bad vibes. Something told him that things weren’t quite right around camp. His spider sense started tingling then, and was positively screaming when, at tribal council, Stacy mentioned that the vote would be split. Yau-Man’s idol brother Earl wasn’t worried, but Yau-Man was. He played the idol when no one thought he would, saving himself and living to fight another day.
Every move that Yau-Man made this week was smart, so he is very much deserving of this week’s MVP award and the Yau-Mania that gives him (at the moment) a 42% popularity rating on CBS’s website.
Yau-Man and Earl will have some work to do in the next few days if they want to win that million dollars. They know for sure that Dreamz can’t be trusted, nor, as it turns out, can Cassandra. I’d like to see them offer to team up with Boo. Boo knows at this point that his head would have been on the chopping block had it not been protected by that immunity necklace. The three of them should take out Cassandra. Dreamz is a much better opponent in front of the jury, considering that Lisi hates him and that he screwed over his fellow horsemen Edgardo, Mookie, and Alex.
